Design As Rhetoric In The Discourse Of Resonance, Veronika Kelly
Design As Rhetoric In The Discourse Of Resonance, Veronika Kelly
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design that is effective by way of having an influence and impact on a human subject’s belief, behaviour, or action is a key concern of designers in the field of visual communications. Because of these aspects, one discourse that has grown in scholarly circles over recent decades is that design is a form of rhetoric. Nonetheless, the way that rhetoric has been applied to design practice itself – as a means of analysing the communicative function of designed artefacts and to posit propositions for practice – has remained largely theoretical. The purpose of this paper is to extend an understanding …

Tools For Effective Communication About Technologies Of Domestic Ubiquitous Computing Systems In User-Centered Design, Wonjun Wonjun, Yeoreum Lee, Jong-Bum Woo, Jinmin Seok, Ingeon Shin, Youn-Kyung Lim
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In the early stages of designing domestic, ubiquitous computing applications, gaining users’ descriptions of how new technologies can shape their futures can be an effective way to collect credible design ideas and to understand users’ personal values and social settings. We present two kinds of tools for empowering users to verbalize their own needs with metaphoric expressions of technologies, 5Senses Cards and Technology Type cards. Those tools are suggested as aids for the user inquiries in the field aimed at needs identification. We tested those tools in 6 homes and found empirical evidences which suggest that 5Senses Cards could encourage …

The Use Of Grounded Theory In User Experience Based Design Research: A Study On "Automobile Modification" In Turkey, Selen Devrim Ülkebaş
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In today’s so called post-industrial societies, increasing influence of the symbolic use of object overwhelmingly dominates the relationship between human and object. As objects have become an important part of individual’s social and psychological world, qualitative research approaches aiming to gather a deep understanding of human behavior and experiences have gained importance not only in the disciplines of social sciences but also in design related disciplines. Grounded Theory is one of the qualitative research approaches aiming to discover and uncover the experiences and interactions of people "grounded" in everyday life practices and generate theories regarding social phenomena. Although Grounded theory …

Designed Research: Publishing Designs As Scholarship, Cheryl E. Ball
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Scholarly publications are a primary means for researchers in any field to foster and support a shared discourse. As design researchers debate what forms their scholarship might take, this author suggests looking to examples from other, transdisciplinary academic fields that have long traditions in publishing designed research, or scholarship that enacts its argument through design. The author offers cases of several online journals in the sciences, arts, and humanities that publish designed research of various types, including one example from digital writing studies, which shares design researchers’ interests in collaborative, processbased, rhetorical practices. By considering alternative modes of publishing design …
Servitization Of Products As An Approach For Design-Driven Innovation, Ehsan Baha, Aylin Groenewoud, Koert Van Mensvoort
Servitization Of Products As An Approach For Design-Driven Innovation, Ehsan Baha, Aylin Groenewoud, Koert Van Mensvoort
ServDes Conference Series
In this paper we present how the meaning of a product can radically be innovated through add-on services and related service support products to the existing product instead of significantly redesigning it. We explore and investigate this assertion with an action-oriented case study using a research through design approach. Our research was done within the Dutch fashion industry together with a fashion label specialized in handmade knitwear. As a result two services; ‘Meet Your Knitter’ and ‘Our Garment’; were designed and added to an exclusive garment line. Early probing indicated an innovation in the meaning of the garments through servitization. …

What Does It Mean To Be A “Materially Attuned” Practitioner?, Maiko Tsutsumi
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper reports on research in progress that explores the potential role the materiality of things plays as a tool for the critical understanding of the human relationship with man-made objects. The paper argues that many designers habitually engage with production and consumption of meanings more through the materiality of things than words and symbols. It proposes a hypothesis that materiality is a key to understanding the context, knowledge and information the man-made objects may “embody”. Through the case study of an exhibition, the paper examines the ways in which this embodiment may be facilitated. Referring to Heidegger’s notion of …
The Scholarship Of Teaching: Threshold Concepts And Research Informed Design Education, Jane Osmond
The Scholarship Of Teaching: Threshold Concepts And Research Informed Design Education, Jane Osmond
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper considers the growing body of established scholarly research culture in the creative arts: which, it is argued, is in the process of ‘catching up’ with more established disciplines such as science, history and economics. This slow growth is linked to the need for practitioner-focused lecturers within the discipline, some of whom have little engagement with scholarly theory before entering the academy. The paper then goes onto consider the introduction of a particular theory - the threshold concept framework - to a cohort of industrial design staff at Coventry University and outlines some of the main impacts on both …
Design Learning For Tomorrow – Design Education From Kindergarten To Phd, Liv Merete Nielsen
Design Learning For Tomorrow – Design Education From Kindergarten To Phd, Liv Merete Nielsen
Learn X Design Conference Series
The 2nd international conference for design education researchers in Oslo May 14– 17, 2013 on the theme of ‘Design learning for tomorrow – Design education from Kindergarten to PhD’ received an overwhelming response. This is gratifying for us, the organisers, as we see design in a broad interdisciplinary perspective in support for a better tomorrow. For years we have promoted the idea that sustainable design solutions should include more than ‘professional’ designers; they should also include a general public as ‘conscious’ consumers and decision makers with responsibility for quality and longevity, as opposed to a “throw-away” society.

Simon Says Syndrome In Art And Design Education, Muhizam Mustafa, Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer, A. S. Hardy Shafii, Azila Zainal
Learn X Design Conference Series
Learning is an important ‘task-conscious process’ that help changes in behaviour (or potential for change). In other words, learning is seen as an outcome - the ‘end product’ of some process. The ‘Simon Says Syndrome’ term was coined based on observation where teachers provide little learning for students other than the experience of doing. This resulted in students being apt at following instructions rather than exploring the process of learning. This paper also argues that ‘Simon Says Syndrome’ may be defined or reflected from the set of conventional practices and systems for teaching (or learning) especially within the art and …

Design Knowledge From Practice(S), Helen Mcallister
Learn X Design Conference Series
The main premise of this paper is to centralize the experiential mode as a fundamental to Design Research whether by practice–based or by practice-led knowledge. This paper will map the process of different ‘knowings’ of practice, how they manifest themselves into critical knowledge for Design. Through this researcher’s engagement with the experiential, came an understanding that could not otherwise have surfaced without the practice–based inquiry and methodologies. ‘Practice’ is a central imperative of Design, yet the nature of these activities we call ‘practices’ is never the less complex in its critical edification and defining how it contributes and shapes ‘culture …

From Tutor-Led To Student-Led Design Education: The Global Studio, Aysar Ghassan, Erik Bohemia
Learn X Design Conference Series
“Tutor-led” design education has been argued to be a system where lecturers are at the centre of teaching & learning activities and where educators’ tastes strongly influence students’ outcomes. Design education has also been argued not to prepare graduates for working in highly complex professional capacities synonymous with the contemporary era. We argue the role of tutors in tutor-led design education to be a factor in this. The Global Studio runs Web 2.0 enabled industry sponsored international collaborations between students. One aim is to introduce learners to “complex project situations” and consequently to prepare them for contemporary working life. It …

Developing Expertise And Connoisseurship Through Handling Objects Of ‘Good Design’: The Example Of The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection, Maria Georgaki
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
The paper develops from the study case of the I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection. The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection comprises about 20,000 design and craft objects chosen by the London County Council and the Inner London Education Authority as examples of “good design”. It circulated in London schools between 1951 and 1976. The paper uses the Collection in order to discuss “handling” as a research methodology with particular relevance to expertise and connoisseurship in design history. It provides an overview of how expertise and connoisseurship diverge in their meaning and scope in the discipline of design history as compared to art history and adjacent disciplines, …
Design History, Connoisseurship And Sustainability: Object Lessons And Collecting As Learning Tools For Designers, Paul Denison
Design History, Connoisseurship And Sustainability: Object Lessons And Collecting As Learning Tools For Designers, Paul Denison
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
The academic discipline of Design History is sometimes accused of having a connoisseurial approach, something which arguably fosters the creation of false hierarchies and subsequently leads design students and the design community to create products which are environmentally, socially and economically unsustainable. The first part of this paper takes the work of sustainable design theorist Tony Fry (2009) as a starting point by which to evaluate this proposition. Fry has been critical of design history, claiming that a focus on style and the icons of design to has resulted in a lack of student interest in the real issues of …
Global Creativity: Intercultural ‘Hands-On’ Workshops For Pre-Service Primary Art Teachers, Bronwen Wade-Leeuwen
Global Creativity: Intercultural ‘Hands-On’ Workshops For Pre-Service Primary Art Teachers, Bronwen Wade-Leeuwen
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This seminal paper is presented against the background of a “hands-off” approach to teaching visual arts in most of the Western world where visual arts education is often considered by the school community as peripheral to the real “mission” of education. Most scholars agree that the role of pre-service teachers in the twenty-first century is to develop creative thinking and action in children. However limited research has been conducted into this area of study. The basic aim of this study is to use arts-based research inquiry to investigate Australian primary pre-service teachers' situated knowledge, experiences, and implicit theories using empirical …
Exploring 'Reflective' Design: An Approach To Digital Archives, Reuben Stanton, Laurene Vaughan, Jeremy Yuille
Exploring 'Reflective' Design: An Approach To Digital Archives, Reuben Stanton, Laurene Vaughan, Jeremy Yuille
Nordes Conference Series
In this short paper we discuss our explorations with adopting reflective design as an approach to designing a digital archive for the performing arts. The stakeholders in this project are diverse, comprised of members of the partner organisation, the public, the design team and government funding agencies. Each stakeholder has different expectations and skills to bring to the project. It is proposed that reflective design with its mix of critical reflection with a human centred design and prototyping approach provides a methodological framework that enables the complexities of the project to be integrated into an action orientated design exploration.
Why Hypothetical? Grounding “The Guess” In Experimentation, Mary Anne Beecher
Why Hypothetical? Grounding “The Guess” In Experimentation, Mary Anne Beecher
Nordes Conference Series
This exploratory paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the use of design experimentation to augment students’ approaches to speculative projects within the context of professional interior design education. By analysing student-based research as integrated into final comprehensive graduate-level design projects at a major North American university, the potential for experimentation to inform design process is articulated. Although the results of such acts are not always easily assessed within the constraints of real-life criteria, it is optimum for generating innovations in design process and hybrid theoretical frameworks that ultimately challenge the profession to define its boundaries in new ways.
Towards A Manifesto For Methodological Experimentation In Design Research, Henry Mainsah, Andrew Morrison
Towards A Manifesto For Methodological Experimentation In Design Research, Henry Mainsah, Andrew Morrison
Nordes Conference Series
This paper argues that design research may benefit from investigations, explorations and innovations in the means of conducting and of conveying design research from qualitative methods in the social sciences. The paper examines how inter-disciplinary and intermethodological experimentation as a mode of knowledge building. At the end of the paper we draw out a manifesto that proposes potential actions concerning design research methods which ought to be applicable for designers and design researchers, but also for social scientists engaging with the changing nature of production-related inquiry and critique in which design increasingly features.
Pedagogy For Teaching Design – With An Emphasis On Sustainable Design, Stephanie Carleklev, Marie Sterte
Pedagogy For Teaching Design – With An Emphasis On Sustainable Design, Stephanie Carleklev, Marie Sterte
Learn X Design Conference Series
Teaching sustainability is not solely a question of providing relevant information; it is foremost about training students to meet the challenges of tomorrow. In design this can mean to shift the focus from material, form and function towards systems, correlation and time – a process supported both by how we teach as well as what we teach. But pedagogy still seems to be treated like a poor cousin to the more important design knowledge. This made us curious about the correlation between pedagogy and teaching design for sustainable change. By applying a study of Eilam and Trop (2011) onto the …

Design Education And Non-Eu Students: Shifts In Teaching Practice, Karen Bull, Jane Osmond
Learn X Design Conference Series
The number of UK international HE students has gradually increased over the last decade, in particular the number of non-EU Chinese and Indian students. This influx has resulted in the recognition that exposure to an unfamiliar pedagogical cultural habitus can cause problems, often compounded by language problems. This paper outlines the response of an MA teaching team at Coventry University to misconceptions that a cohort of Chinese and Indian students expressed during a research methods module. This was evidenced by uncertainty as to what they were expected to produce in terms of a research proposal, as the extension of the …

Designers Coping With Culture In An Educational Setting, Annemiek Van Boeijen, Pieter Jan Stappers
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents the results of a qualitative study about how design students cope with culture in the i-do (international design opportunity) series of international design workshops in Hong Kong. We wanted to learn three things. (1) To what extent do the design students from different nations share common cultural values? (2) what difficulties do design students encounter in this type of workshops, and what techniques and strategies do they use to cope with (cultural) barriers? and (3) what opportunities (personal benefits) do they identify to attend this type of workshop? The results and conclusions are based on experiences of …
How Can Feminism Contribute To Design? A Framework For A Feminist Design Research And Practice, Sandra Buchmüller
How Can Feminism Contribute To Design? A Framework For A Feminist Design Research And Practice, Sandra Buchmüller
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In this paper, I present a framework for a feminist design research and practice. It aims to guide design decisions from information, ideation to evaluation from a feminist point of view. It tries to facilitate the selection of appropriate approaches and methods in each phase with regard to feminist demands and requirements to support a feminist design on a methodological, practical and evaluative level. The framework integrates different gender theories whose perspectives correspond to main phases and focuses that can be regarded as mandatory for human centered design. The framework integrates the feminist standpoint theory, the theory of gender performativity …

This study aims to develop a method of retrieving indigenous knowledge, cultural identity, and artistic quality in local craft through design activities. Taking bamboo basketry product as the case study, this research selected Bangchaocha, a sub-district in Ang Thong province, as a representative of Thailand’s rich culture and established crafts village. The community has recently encountered a problem seen in many craft communities throughout Asia – one that sees the loss of their traditional craft identity due to foreign traders placing large orders for generic products that showcase neither indigenous craft knowledge nor traditional craftsmanship. This study aims to show …

While industrial designers have traditionally advocated aesthetics in their work, with evocative forms and materials, recent advances in design philosophy about “user experience” suggest a deeper analysis. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to explore beauty as an experiential aesthetic value, dependent upon user-product interactions. The goal is to offer designers a valuable tool: a systematic, extensible model for describing beauty for design, with powerful insights drawn from other disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, computer science, and architecture. This paper strives to understand the concept of beauty as a value of human-product grounded in daily experience. Beauty is typically associated …
Designing For The Other, Jane Osmond, Elaine Mackie
Designing For The Other, Jane Osmond, Elaine Mackie
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses a pilot study into whether the introduction of the concept of the ‘Other’ (after Said 1991) is useful in broadening the conceptual understanding and empathy of first year industrial design students and thus move them away from a position of an ‘I methodology’ of design. The concept was introduced via a lecture delivered to Coventry University students and impact was measured by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Davis 1980). A research group (who received the lecture) and a control group (who did not) completed the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) over a three-week period. Students were also tasked with …

Ethics And Social Responsibility: Integration Within Industrial Design Education In Oceania, Mariano Ramirez
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Industrial design schools have typically functioned as training grounds in which future designers are skilled into becoming proficient creators of more ‘stuff’, many of which prove to be unnecessary and unsustainable. Several research publications examine the integration of sustainability in industrial design education, but most of these focus on ecological aspects, especially because environmental improvement has been the focus of government policymaking and product innovation in the last two decades or so. The social pillar of sustainability has received less attention; in fact there is no accepted definition in the design industry about what constitutes this area. This research investigates …
