Pastoral Care In Lutheran Rural America-Its Uniqueness And Challenge, Stephen Nickodemus

Master of Divinity Thesis

The subject of this research paper deals with the topic, Pastoral Care in Lutheran Rural America: Its Uniqueness and Challenge. The paper will be divided into four chapters as follows: (1) Pastoral Care in general, a Lutheran definition and what this entails for the Lutheran pastor; (2) Rural America, the unique American sub-culture: what it is and how it is changing; (3) Lutheran Rural America, a definition and how it is changing; and (4) Pastoral Care in Lutheran Rural America its uniqueness and its challenge to the Lutheran Pastor. Each of these chapters might involve an entire research paper, but …

The Validity Of Separating Altar From Pulpit Fellowship, Steven Bauer May 1981

The Validity Of Separating Altar From Pulpit Fellowship, Steven Bauer

Master of Divinity Thesis

This solution to the problem of church fellowship between the ALC and the LCMS deserves some attention. It offers a simple but practical compromise which seems to go a long way towards seeking out Christian fellowship among Lutheran church bodies which are very close while protecting their concern for the truth of God's Word. But, no matter how pratical it may be, the primary question we must ask of it is, "Is this in accordance with God's Word?” The purpose of this paper is to determine whether the separation of altar from pulpit fellowship is valid in the light of …

An Effort To Sample Scientifically The Attitudes Of Pastors Toward Alcholism In A Section Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James Hallerberg Aug 1979

An Effort To Sample Scientifically The Attitudes Of Pastors Toward Alcholism In A Section Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James Hallerberg

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

What attitudes do pastors have toward alcoholics? Specifically, do parish pastors of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod have positive or negative attitudes in their ministry to alcoholics? Are the attitudes of pastors a significant factor in an effective ministry to alcoholics? What attitudinal factors can be specified as having particular significance? These are the fundamental questions which this study addresses.

Guilt In The Parish Ministry-A Pastoral Perspective, Dale Kleimola Feb 1979

Guilt In The Parish Ministry-A Pastoral Perspective, Dale Kleimola

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper is divided into four major sections. The first presents the nature of the illness from a personal and mec7icalperspective. This will be helpful in revealing to an interested pastor the symptoms of, the- illness. The second section deals with the illness from a theological perspective, especially in terms of how depression is influenced by the tension that exists between Law and Gospel. The third section deals with depression as a psychological illness and discusses how some schools of psychiatric medicine deal with the relationship between personal religious faith and psychological disorder. The fourth section considers how a pastor …

The Doctrine Of Sanctification As Portrayed In Spener's Pia Desideria In Light Of The Lutheran Confessions, Francis Monseth May 1978

The Doctrine Of Sanctification As Portrayed In Spener's Pia Desideria In Light Of The Lutheran Confessions, Francis Monseth

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The writer believes there is a need for a fresh study of the doctrine of sanctification. In the area of Christian ethics, a variety of views have found earnest adherents. Though various approaches have been advocated, three main categories are seen by the writer to be able to encompass the present spectrum: antinomianism, legalism, and truly biblical Christian living. The latter is given expression in the Lutheran Confessions. It is marked by pronounced emphasis upon the inseparability of justification and sanctification. Indeed, as A. T. Mollegen has expressed it, the whole of Protestantism in its historic confessions has derived its …

Paul's Principals Of Counseling In First And Second Timothy: The Search For A Biblical View Of Counseling, Robert Gaiser Feb 1977

Paul's Principals Of Counseling In First And Second Timothy: The Search For A Biblical View Of Counseling, Robert Gaiser

Master of Divinity Thesis

Thus this paper seeks to define a balanced position between psychology and theology and between secular counseling and counseling by those with theological training. This is done in a general overview. But going beyond the definition of these terms and the relationship of theology to psychology, the author seeks to set forth some counseling methods or terms that Paul uses in his two letters to Timothy. The purpose of this paper is to set forth these principals to aid us in the area of pastoral counseling.

A Lutheran View Of Vactican Ii On Liturgy And Scripture, Raymond Mueller May 1976

A Lutheran View Of Vactican Ii On Liturgy And Scripture, Raymond Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The fact that the Second Vatican Council has brought vast change into the Roman Catholic Church is obvious. But was the sum of these changes beneficial for its own members and sufficient to remove the walls erected between Rome and historic Lutheranism back in the 16th Century? What, actually, is the direction in which the Roman Church is now headed after Vatican II? This study is an attempt to find answers to these questions.

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider May 1974

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the material recorded in Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthian congregation, the reader comes into contact with what Paul refers to as charismata, or spiritual gifts. Chapter 14 of this Epistle concentrates on two of these charismata, namely speaking in tongues and prophecy. Both are "utterance gifts", and from Paul's treatment of them, it seems that there is a definite link between them. Since we are currently experiencing an increasing element of "charismatic renewal" within our own denomination, and do not seem able to deal pastorally with it, it will be my purpose in this brief section to delve …

Pastoral Counseling With The Dying Child And His Family, Kenneth Doka May 1973

Pastoral Counseling With The Dying Child And His Family, Kenneth Doka

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper hopes to explore the area of pastoral counseling to the dying child and his family. The paper views such a ministry as having three major facets. First is the ministry to the dying child himself. While this seems elementary, it is often neglected, often because of the minister’s own difficulty with the death of a child. It must be realized that childhood is not a homogeneous unit but that there are sharply differentiated stages within childhood. The five-year-old reacts to death in ways considerably different from the adolescent. Thus research along these lines, along with its pastoral implications …

Psychology And Theology: A Return To Dialog, Alan C. Reuter May 1973

Psychology And Theology: A Return To Dialog, Alan C. Reuter

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is a close relationship between Christian theology and contemporary psychology. The Lutheran theological tradition is especially founded in an experiential matrix which gives it a common ground with psychological thought. However, this relationship between theology and psychology has not always been a clear or comfortable one.

Justification And Anthropology, Wenzel Lohff Jan 1973

Justification And Anthropology, Wenzel Lohff

Concordia Theological Monthly

The author suggests that contemporary difficulties with respect to understanding the article of justification arise in large measure from the fact that justification has been separated from its anthropological rootage. At the same time, Dr. Lohff argues that the doctrine of justification offers great help to modern man, who often feels trapped in his very humanness. Furthermore, justification, when proclaimed properly, makes Christian unity possible. He describes justification briefly as the right and unequivocal determination of a human practice: to always live anew the life of faith in the Gospel.

The Pastor's Role And Suicide Bereaved, Michael Haar Nov 1972

The Pastor's Role And Suicide Bereaved, Michael Haar

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study will limit itself to the aftermath of suicide. Many aspects of suicide will not be dealt with. For example, it will not deal with the reasons why people kill themselves. These reasons would be included in studies of suicidology, the rational suicide, religion and suicide, philosophy and suicide, and the prevention of suicide. Nor is this paper a definitive study of the aftermath of suicide. Research in this part of the suicide event has only begun in the last few years. The newness of data on this subject is seen in the fact that until 1972 there was …

The Changing Objectives And Philosophy Of Campus Ministry In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Marcus D. Pera May 1972

The Changing Objectives And Philosophy Of Campus Ministry In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Marcus D. Pera

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the intention of this paper to be part of the process of reevaluation and rearticulation. Chapter II will provide a brief history of campus ministry in the LCMS in order to place in perspective and offer a setting within which to consider the development of the objectives and philosophy of campus ministry in the LCMS. Chapter III will then detail that development. It is to be noted that all information relating specifically to campus ministry in the LCMS is limited to the information contained in official documents of the LCMS such as the minutes from the annual University …

Significant Interpretations Of Developing Structures Of The Ministry-1880-1970, Roland A. Frantz May 1972

Significant Interpretations Of Developing Structures Of The Ministry-1880-1970, Roland A. Frantz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A historical study of the Church's ministry soon discloses a great deal of variety in the ministerial office. As Niebuhr and Williams remind us in their historical survey of the Protestant ministry, while there are a number of aspects of ministry that are agreed upon and shared in the various historic churches, there are also divergent interpretations regarding the nature and essence of the ministerial office.

The Use Of The Word In The Counseling Process, Leonard E. Stahlke May 1972

The Use Of The Word In The Counseling Process, Leonard E. Stahlke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study was to investigate the problem of what is meant by pastoral care and pastoral counseling, and by the counseling process, the techniques used in that process, and the place of the pastoral counseling process in the practical ministry of the pastor; then, to relate these findings to a sound scriptural approach of the use of the Word in the counseling process.

Possible Courses Of Action Involving A Disaffected Or Dissident Individual Or Group Of Individuals In The Church,, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

This study was not designed for publication. The staff of CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY requested the author to prepare it as the basis for a discussion out of which an in-house position paper might come. After receiving and discussing the draft, the staff adopted it as its own with minor modifications and secured the author's permission to publish it.

What Sort Of Personality Should The Pastor-Counselor Have, Walter Geist Nov 1971

What Sort Of Personality Should The Pastor-Counselor Have, Walter Geist

Master of Divinity Thesis

Young men going into the service of the church only have a vague idea about the role of pastor as counselor. They realize that there is a certain amount of counseling they will be required to do as pastors and yet their seminary education provides them with few structured courses in this area of ministry. The student may suddenly realize that he is not prepared to function as counselor for personal problems and interpersonal relationships. In an effort to help the student prepare for counseling relationships this study will examine and present the most basic resource a pastor-counselor should have; …

A Case Study In Exegetical Methodology George Stoeckhardt And Johann Philip Koehler On Ephesians, William John Hassold May 1971

A Case Study In Exegetical Methodology George Stoeckhardt And Johann Philip Koehler On Ephesians, William John Hassold

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

In every church body there have been certain individuals who have exercised decisive leadership and whose influence has continued through the years. In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod a listing of such men might include Dr. C. F. w. Walther, Dr. Franz Pieper, Dr. Georg Stoeckhardt, and others. In the Wisconsin Synod the list would certainly include Dr. Adolf Hoenecke, Professors August Pieper, Johann Philip Koehler, and John P. Meyer. Some of these men distinguished themselves as organizational leaders, some as theologians, and some in both areas of church life.

The two individuals whose labors have been of the greatest significance …

The Understandings Of Pornography In The Behavioral Sciences And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Paul Metzler May 1970

The Understandings Of Pornography In The Behavioral Sciences And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Paul Metzler

Master of Divinity Thesis

Some further comments about the intent of this study should help clarify what I am attempting to do. I do not plan to develop a universally valid definition of pornography. My research has led me to see definition itself as one of the issues: In Chapter II where I have presented my findings from the behavorial sciences, I have indicated the attempts of various studies to develop just such a definition. Their variety and differing emphases show that one of the difficulties of dealing adequately with the phenomenon of pornography is determining what qualifies or does not qualify for that …

The Correlation Of Selected Malady Concepts Of Psychotherapy With Their Theological Counterparts, As Evidenced In The Pastoral Counseling Literature Of 1945-1957, Robert E. Rediehs May 1970

The Correlation Of Selected Malady Concepts Of Psychotherapy With Their Theological Counterparts, As Evidenced In The Pastoral Counseling Literature Of 1945-1957, Robert E. Rediehs

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The basic concern of this paper is whether or not psychotherapy and theology have anything to do with each other. There is much feeling in Christian tradition about the extent to which extra-theological studies relate to theology. The present paper will not deal with the efforts which have been made to point out a dissimilarity between these fields. Rather it hypothesizes that psychotherapy and theology are, in some sense, related, and that this can be demonstrated in the terminology and meanings of pastoral counseling.

A Conversation Between Pasquil And German: Theological Mood And Method, 1537, Robert Kolb Mar 1970

A Conversation Between Pasquil And German: Theological Mood And Method, 1537, Robert Kolb

Concordia Theological Monthly

Like the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles were forged for use in confessional confrontation and were the product of a complex political-ecclesiastical situation. Luther composed this confession of faith not for himself but at the request of his prince. Elector John Frederick of Saxony ordered the summary of the chief articles of faith as a position paper to be used in possible negotiations with representatives of the Roman party after Pope Paul III promulgated a bull of convocation for a general council in June 1536. The Smalcald Articles were but one literary reaction to the papal bull of convocation. Other …

Different Ministries, Different Means, One God! -A Theological Opinion On The Racial Issue, Kenneth F. Korby Feb 1970

Different Ministries, Different Means, One God! -A Theological Opinion On The Racial Issue, Kenneth F. Korby

Concordia Theological Monthly

Consideration of the racial issue in the context of social reform has often been marked by a profound confusion of the Law and the Gospel. As a result, rather ill-defined issues have been confounded by a darkening of the light itself. The Law has not been used lawfully, and the Gospel has not been employed evangelically. The church in relation to culture has been seen as a "Statue of Liberty" that bears the torch of social reform, holding it high in the air as she leads mankind to a better society. She has been viewed as the "conscience of society," …

The Ministry Of Absolution, Friedrich-Wilhelm Kuenneth Feb 1970

The Ministry Of Absolution, Friedrich-Wilhelm Kuenneth

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Commission on Worship and Spiritual Life of the Lutheran World Federation at its meeting in Hanover (March-April 1967) decided to summarize its general discussion on absolution and to use it as a basis for further research. At the same time the commission wanted to develop a questionnaire on the basis of its discussion and send it to several experts. Those experts were expected to be particularly well-trained theologians as well as people experienced in hearing private confessions and in pastoral counseling. The commission sought reactions to four specific questions.
