Documentation: A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies, Ctcr

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod instructed the Commission on Theology and Church Relations to "conduct a comprehensive study of Biblical hermeneutics" (1965 Proceedings, Res. 2-07, page 95), it did not thereby declare a moratorium on Biblical study and scholarship throughout the Synod. On the contrary, the church's scholars, wherever their calling finds them, as well as all other members of the church, are expected to continue their daily searching of the Scriptures as vigorously as ever. The special study assigned to the Commission on Theology and Church Relations is simply a part of and, hopefully, a useful contribution to the …

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann Jan 1967

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

This holds with special force for a confessional-conservative church which is, with good reason, appreciative of and jealous for its heritage; and such The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is, thank God. The question "have we changed?" is charged with emotion, and at least one component of that emotion is one that must be honored and taken seriously: the clement of holy fear lest that one talent which is death to hide be lodged with us useless.

Μὴ ΔιακρίΝων Τ̀Ο Σω̑Υα (Mē Diakrinōn To Sōma (Romanized Form), David Joesting Nov 1966

Μὴ ΔιακρίΝων Τ̀Ο Σω̑Υα (Mē Diakrinōn To Sōma (Romanized Form), David Joesting

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of Paul's expression μὴ διακρίνων τ̀ο σω̑υα in 1 Cor.11:29. The basic task is exegetical, but the concern which promted the research is the pragmatic concern of meaning in use. This paper will, therefore, begin with a careful study to determine, as best as is possible, what Paul meant when he wrote the words in question. It will conclude with an analysis and evaluation of past and present application of 1 Cor. 11:29 and its context.

Reading Programs In Theology: An Overview Of Pastoral Care, Harry G. Coiner, David S. Schuller Oct 1966

Reading Programs In Theology: An Overview Of Pastoral Care, Harry G. Coiner, David S. Schuller

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the midst of the intensifying "explosion of knowledge," the speed with which cultural changes are taking place, and an increased number of specialists, clergymen now are keenly aware of the need for continued professional growth. Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, is attempting to meet part of this need. The ideal answer, of course, lies in intensive retraining in terms of graduate programs, summer school study, and quarter-long sabbaticals from the parish for concentrated study. Regional institutes and workshops offer another level of educational experience.

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman Jun 1966

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper, then, is to compare and contrast the various interpretations in an attempt to discover their strengths and weaknesses. If possible, some guidelines will be suggested for the interpretation of this passage and probabilities will be noted where answers are unavailable. The complex question of historical background will be discussed as it relates to the various interpretations, but it cannot be treated in depth.

The Temptation Of Jesus In Matthew, Paul Bretscher May 1966

The Temptation Of Jesus In Matthew, Paul Bretscher

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Our purpose in this study is to understand the story of Jesus' temptation in Matthew 4:1-10. We are concerned in particular to find the meaning of the three episodes, each consisting in an attack of: the devil and a reply of Jesus, which form the body of the pericope.

The Use And Procedure Of Fraternal Admonition According To Matthew 16:15-17, Karl Schmidt May 1966

The Use And Procedure Of Fraternal Admonition According To Matthew 16:15-17, Karl Schmidt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The basic purpose of this study of Matthew 18:15-17, as is the case with the valid study of any portion of Holy Scripture, is to determine the message which the Lord here speaks to His people today. More specifically, this study seeks to determine two things: (l) whether or not our Lord here lays down an explicit procedure for dealing with the sinning brother, and (2) whether this particular section of Scripture speaks only of personal relationships among Christians, or also of formal ecclesiastical discipline and excommunication.

The Hopes Of Israel, Roddy Braun May 1966

The Hopes Of Israel, Roddy Braun

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis seeks to examine in detail Israel' s hopes for the future as they find expression in the Latter Prophets. More specifically, this thesis seeks to investigate the precise forms in which and by which Israel expressed her hopes. It attempts to isolate and to examine the many varying pictures which Israel used to portray her hopes and, to the degree that the material at hand permits, to bring these varying pictures together into something of an organized whole.

The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth May 1966

The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to investigate the new quest of the historical Jesus as it has been carried out by four pupils of Rudolf Bultmann. These four pupils are: Ernst Kasemann, Gunther Bornkamm, Gerhard Ebeling, and Ernst Fuchs. They are part of a group of former Bultmann pupils who have called themselves the "Alte Marburger," or "old Marburgers," from the fact that they all studied together under Bultmann at the University of Marburg.

The Doctrine Of Baptism As An Ecumenical Factor, Elvin Janetzki May 1966

The Doctrine Of Baptism As An Ecumenical Factor, Elvin Janetzki

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This ecumenical problem of apparent unity in disunity is the starting point for this study. All aspects of the problem, however, cannot be fully investigated here, so it has been narrowed down to show how a major ecumenical organization, The World Council of Churches, through its Assemblies and Commissions has become increasingly interested in the doctrine of Holy Baptism, to investigate why it has done so, and to trace the attempts it has made to formulate a doctrine of Baptism that it is hoped will resolve the problem of unity in disunity to the satisfaction of all concerned.

To Know And To Do: A Review Article On Training Children In The Work Of Worship, George W. Hoyer Apr 1966

To Know And To Do: A Review Article On Training Children In The Work Of Worship, George W. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Learning How Children Worship is the title of a recent book by Grace W. McGavran. So many things are left unsaid in this book about the God who is to be worshiped and about the tremendous things which that God has done and does to make worship by the children of men possible that the critical theological reader might miss the significance of the major thing which is being said. Miss McGavran poses the question: "Are the children aware of the times of worship and what it should be for them - a conscious effort to enter into the presence …

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer Mar 1966

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the first section, we dealt with the language of preaching. Can it be understood? Does God speak and act in it? In the second we dealt with the method of finding and conveying Biblical truth in preaching. Have current Biblical studies a contribution to make to the pastor as he sets about on his task of preparing and delivering sermons? The third article does not turn away from these questions and processes, but it locates them in their setting: the Christian church. Ours is a time of rediscovery of the meaning of the church.

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt Nov 1965

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt

Bachelor of Divinity

In the past few years theology has experienced a renewal in the area of hermeneutics. This renaissance includes more than a stimulating interest in the principles of interpretation, a periodic revival similar to those that have come and gone in other theological fields. Hermeneutics has broken the boundaries in which it has been confined since the age of orthodoxy and assumed totally new proportions, even to the extent of becoming the focal point of theology for some theologians. To trace some of the philosophical influences behind and in this movement is the proposed task of this paper.

The Figure Of Marriage In Ephesians 5:21-33, Fredrick Wiese Jun 1965

The Figure Of Marriage In Ephesians 5:21-33, Fredrick Wiese

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is an investigation of the figure of marriage in Ephesians 5:21-33. The specific problem is to determine whether or not in these verses the figure exists as it does throughout Scripture. Thus this discussion necessitates establishing what characteristics, if any, are common to the figure of marriage in the Old Testament and New Testament. The ultimate question that results is are Christ and the Church regarded as husband and wife in these verses?" The answer will be determined in these verses by specific statements to that effect or by the description of the relationship between Christ and the …

The Origin Of The Synodical Conferences, Walter Uhlig May 1965

The Origin Of The Synodical Conferences, Walter Uhlig

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The years in which events occurred that culminated in the establishment of the Synodical Conference were some of the most significant years in the history of Lutheranism in America. Mighty forces were at work in those days, forces that affected all Lutheran synods in this country, forces that led to warm synodical friendships and bitter synodical hostilities. In this study some of these forces are examined as they affected the six synods that formed the Synodical Conference and also certain synods that did not align themselves with the Conference. The background and general emphasis of each of these groups are …

Luther's Principles Of Teaching As Reflected In His Preached Sermons 1528-1532, Franklin Ritthamel May 1965

Luther's Principles Of Teaching As Reflected In His Preached Sermons 1528-1532, Franklin Ritthamel

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This thesis will explore the educational development and teaching activities of Martin Luther against the background of the Reformation. It will bring some understanding of the importance of education in the Lutheran Reformation, the scope of Luther’s educational activities, the necessity of education for the success of the Reformation, and the objectives which marked the educational activity in the Reformation. It will show the theological development of Martin Luther and how this brought about educational reforms. This study is especially directed toward relating these items to Luther’s preaching in the period of 1528-1532.

An Analysis Of Clericalim In Some Philippine Church Bodies As An Obstacle To Lay Activty In The Lutheran Church In The Philippines, Norbert Becker May 1965

An Analysis Of Clericalim In Some Philippine Church Bodies As An Obstacle To Lay Activty In The Lutheran Church In The Philippines, Norbert Becker

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present study is born out of the conviction that, humanly speaking, the future of the Lutheran Church in the Philippines, and that of any Christian body for that matter, lies in a vitally active laity. It is also born out of a bit of experience that has seen what laymen can do when properly stimulated and guided. The study is made also in the belief that the clergy themselves to a large extent hold the key to a genuinely active laity and that they can be a tremendous influence either positively or negatively.

New Thinking In Christian Education, Randolph Crump Miller Feb 1965

New Thinking In Christian Education, Randolph Crump Miller

Concordia Theological Monthly

From where I sit, I see many critical issues in Christian education. For as a professor at Yale, I see all the winds of the future that blow through our hallowed halls. As editor of Religious Education, I know what is going to be published in the next six months by Christians and Jews. As a director of Christian education in a local congregation, I am aware of what is actually going on among the faithful. This perspective governs much of what I shall say.

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer Feb 1965

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

During recent years the Christian church has been living with a collective sense of guilt which has been sapping its spiritual vitality. Voices are raised in the church which assume full responsibility for the plight of modern man and which castigate the church because it has not been "relevant." The racial crisis, the rising rate of alcoholism, declining standards of public and private morality, deterioration of family life-for these and a thousand other problems the church has been urged to accept at least partial responsibility. The church has frequently forgotten to offer the message of God's forgiveness to itself. The …

Its Graduates Speak; The Seminary Listens, Ronald L. Johnstone Dec 1964

Its Graduates Speak; The Seminary Listens, Ronald L. Johnstone

Concordia Theological Monthly

How well does Concordia Seminary train its students for subsequent service in the church? This is the central question being asked continually by Concordia Seminary of itself; this is also the question of a study just completed by the Concordia Seminary Research Center. The following pages report in part the results of this study of training effectiveness.

The Mission Of Concordia Seminary, Alfred O. Fuerbringer Dec 1964

The Mission Of Concordia Seminary, Alfred O. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Perhaps the title needs a word of explanation. We do not ordinarily think of "mission" in connection with long-established educational institutions unless, perhaps, they are located in foreign lands and are part of a "mission" related to a sending church. In fact, all too often "education," even ministerial and missionary training, has been viewed critically as a rival of "missions" for the church’s concern, interest, and dollar.
