The Theology Of Acts, Robert H. Smith Sep 1971

The Theology Of Acts, Robert H. Smith

Concordia Theological Monthly

The author argues that Luke-Acts must be read as a single work in two volumes, whose author is a brilliant theologian. Acts 28:17-31 provides a window through which the reader can begin to penetrate and to ponder the theological message of Luke-Acts.

The Role Of The Old Testament In High School Level Curricula Of The American Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Church In America, And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1964-1970, Harold W. Rast Jun 1971

The Role Of The Old Testament In High School Level Curricula Of The American Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Church In America, And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1964-1970, Harold W. Rast

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The aim of this study is to determine how the various curriculum materials present Word of God in the Old Testament. Accordingly, topics or categories to be dealt with include revelation, Bible, the unity of the testaments, salvation, morality, and historical-critical exegesis.

In a general way, then, this study proposes to engage in what educators would call descriptive research. One type of descriptive research is content analysis, the use of a set of techniques to determine certain specified characteristics of verbal communication. According to Gephart and Ingle, education professors at Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the purpose of …

A Study Of The Hermeneutical Principles Involved In The Interpretation And Use Of Psalm 22 In Biblical And Extra-Biblical Sources, Harvey Donald Lange Jun 1971

A Study Of The Hermeneutical Principles Involved In The Interpretation And Use Of Psalm 22 In Biblical And Extra-Biblical Sources, Harvey Donald Lange

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This study seeks to answer the specific question: what principle or principles of interpretation--philological, historical, theological--guide ancient interpreters as they used Psalm 22? The writer does not propose to discuss in depth the theology of any particular writing except to indicate its significance for the question of hermeneutics. There will be no extensive exegesis of every passage which either quotes or alludes to Psalm 22. A complete exegesis of Psalm 22 will not even be undertaken except on those points which seem most pertinent to the objective of this dissertation. This study will consider the nature of midrash and its …

Ministry Without Fear, Krister Stendahl Jun 1971

Ministry Without Fear, Krister Stendahl

Concordia Theological Monthly

I worry a lot about speaking to you senior seminarians. I feel honored and moved by the occasion. I sense much of the feelings and the fears and the joys and hopes, sometimes together and sometimes in clash, that are present in this room and in your branch of the church. It is the kind of situation in which it is difficult for anyone to speak who doesn't have to pay the price of staying and sweating it out. I will not give a very delightful and happy dinner speech, although, I guess, real humor is not to tell stories …

The Implications For Christology Of The Idenity Of The Poor Man In The Teaching Of Jesus, Adrian Max Leske Jun 1971

The Implications For Christology Of The Idenity Of The Poor Man In The Teaching Of Jesus, Adrian Max Leske

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Studies have been carried out in times past on the poor man motif in the Old Testament. The results of these have varied and few have deemed it necessary to suggest any implications their conclusions might have for the Gospels. Consequently, investigations of the motif in the New Testament area have been negligible and generally disappointing. For this reason, I have undertaken this study of the poor man motif, particularly as it appertains to the Messianic role as Jesus himself understood it.

Λοτική Λατρειά The Dedication Of The Body To The Will Of God, Aaron L. Uitti Jun 1971

Λοτική Λατρειά The Dedication Of The Body To The Will Of God, Aaron L. Uitti

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to ascertain what Paul, means by the phrase λοδικὴ λατρεία and what its implications are for the worshiping Christian community. This phrase occurs only once in Paul, but at an important transitional point in the epistle to the Romans (12:1). Nowhere else in the New Testament or the Greek translation of the Old Testament does this phrase appear. In fact the combination logikȇ latreia did not appear in any of the literature or material investigated.

A Study In The Origin Of The Pauline Use Of Mysterion, Gilbert John Holstein Jun 1971

A Study In The Origin Of The Pauline Use Of Mysterion, Gilbert John Holstein

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of our investigation is to try to determine the origin of Paul’s use of the term Muσˉcmˈecov with a view toward clarification of the concept of “mystery" in Pauline theology.

The Pauline Understanding Of "The Law Of Christ", Keith Arnold Gerberding May 1971

The Pauline Understanding Of "The Law Of Christ", Keith Arnold Gerberding

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

It is puzzling, then, to hear Paul affirming the validity of the law, as he does in his letter to the Romans (3:21,31; 7:12,16) and in the first letter to the Corinthians (14:34). It seems to be a contradiction in terms when Paul combines "law" and "Christ" in the expression "the law of Christ" (Gal. 6:2). The purpose of this study is to find out what Paul means by this phrase and those phrases which are similar (1 Cor. 9:21; Rom. 3:27; 8:2), in view of his teaching on law and the revelation given in Christ.

A Case Study In Exegetical Methodology George Stoeckhardt And Johann Philip Koehler On Ephesians, William John Hassold May 1971

A Case Study In Exegetical Methodology George Stoeckhardt And Johann Philip Koehler On Ephesians, William John Hassold

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

In every church body there have been certain individuals who have exercised decisive leadership and whose influence has continued through the years. In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod a listing of such men might include Dr. C. F. w. Walther, Dr. Franz Pieper, Dr. Georg Stoeckhardt, and others. In the Wisconsin Synod the list would certainly include Dr. Adolf Hoenecke, Professors August Pieper, Johann Philip Koehler, and John P. Meyer. Some of these men distinguished themselves as organizational leaders, some as theologians, and some in both areas of church life.

The two individuals whose labors have been of the greatest significance …

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The purpose of this thesis is to examine in detail three chapters of the work of the Chronicler--1 Chronicles 22, 28, 29--and to demonstrate their importance for better understanding the structure, theology, and purpose of the work of the Chronicler. The following background will explain the reason for the choice of these chapters and outline the methodology and contents of the study.

Hermeneutics And The Teacher Of Theology, Edgar Krentz May 1971

Hermeneutics And The Teacher Of Theology, Edgar Krentz

Concordia Theological Monthly

After discussing the use and meaning of the term “Hermeneutics," the author explores both the historical and the critical dimensions necessary in contemporary Biblical study and shows how teachers of theology, their students, and pastors can derive great benefits from such historical-critical studies of the sacred Scriptures.

The Anointing At Bethany In The Fourth Gospel, James Russell Pierce May 1971

The Anointing At Bethany In The Fourth Gospel, James Russell Pierce

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In addition to the introductions at 11:1 and 12:1, there are five others which include references to other parts of the Fourth Gospel. Our purpose in reviewing them is to find a pattern which may suggest why John felt these reminders necessary, hoping thereby to find a basis for interpreting his intention as he related the anointing at Bethany. This study will be limited to references in introductions, excluding phrases which John includes here and there to add information in the midst of a pericope (for example, that Philip was from Bethsaida, 12:21).

The Relationship Of Amos To The Cult, Alfred John Johnson May 1971

The Relationship Of Amos To The Cult, Alfred John Johnson

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis will examine the prophecy of Amos and attempt to show that Amos was not inimical toward the cult. Through an investigation of the background and vocation of Amos it will be shown that he did not live a life of isolation, but that he had frequent intercourse with his countrymen. Through an examination of the speech forms used by Amos, it will be shown that he had a broad acquaintance with the literary arts and skills of his culture and an intimate knowledge of the cultic system of the religion of Israel.

Irony, And Other Literary Techniques, In The Fourth Gospel, Robert O. Neff Jr May 1971

Irony, And Other Literary Techniques, In The Fourth Gospel, Robert O. Neff Jr

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper deals with Johannine-Synoptic differences. Since the problem is multifarious, this paper will be limited to basic dissimilarities and how they might be resolved. Toward this end an understanding of John’s use of irony, and other literary techniques, might help.

The Resurrection Faith Of The Maccabean Martyrs, Harold N. Wendt May 1971

The Resurrection Faith Of The Maccabean Martyrs, Harold N. Wendt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is to undertake a study of the resurrection faith of the Maccabean martyrs. In so doing, it will study two particu1ar works, the canonical book of Daniel and the apocryphal book of Second Maccabees.

By "resurrection" is meant that act of God by which He calls forth the bodies of the dead and restores them to life again. This term implies something different from what is usually understood by such concepts as the immortality of the soul, translation and assumption.

The thesis will consider the nature of the faith embraced by these martyrs with regard to the following; …

History And Dogma In Christology, Walter R. Bouman Apr 1971

History And Dogma In Christology, Walter R. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

Careful examination of a recent convention resolution of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (Resolution 2-16, “To Affirm Historicity of New Testament," Denver 1969) provides a basis for the author's discussion of the way in which church bodies can best prepare doctrinal statements and of the proper role of historical investigation and dogmatic formulations in the process of framing the church's Christological confession.

The Implications Of The Cross For The Invisible Powers And The State Against The Background Of 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 And Colossians 1:15-20, Dean Zweck Feb 1971

The Implications Of The Cross For The Invisible Powers And The State Against The Background Of 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 And Colossians 1:15-20, Dean Zweck

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Our aim in this study is to discover the implications of the cross for the invisible powers and the State against the background of two Pauline passages which in our opinion are very relevant to the topic. In the first part of this study we shall trace the history of the discussion on invisible powers and the State in this century. Then we shall turn back the clock many centuries am examine the background relevant to our topic. With this general introduction and background material in mind, our task shall be to examine what each of the two passages that …

[Mythoi (Romanized Form)] And [Genealogiai (Romanized Form)] In The Pastoral Epistles : A Reappraisal, Dale Banke Nov 1970

[Mythoi (Romanized Form)] And [Genealogiai (Romanized Form)] In The Pastoral Epistles : A Reappraisal, Dale Banke

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is a tentative reappraisal of the nature of the μυ̑θοι and δενεαλοδίαι as these reflect a portion of the heresy combatted in the Pastorals. It is not intended to be an investigation of the entire heresy, much less the complete gamut of exhortation which the Epistles contain. This might appear to pose a false separation, since the wider contexts of the passages that include mention of the μυ̑θοι and δενεαλοδίαι seem to draw in much of the polemic and even some of the advice concerning early church order contained in these letters. Nonetheless, only those aspects of the …

Christian Humanism And The Reformation: Erasmus And Melanchthon, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

A closer examination of the relationship between Erasmus and Melanchthon - contemporaries who were both Christian humanists and ecclesiastical reformers, though they never met each other face to face - illuminates several significant aspects of the complex interrelationship between Christian humanism and the Reformation.

A Look At The Neb-Ot, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer, Frederick W. Danker Sep 1970

A Look At The Neb-Ot, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

A reviewer of the New English Bible (NEB) is inclined to compare this text with that of the 18-year-old Revised Version (RSV) and the new Jerusalem Bible. Before he compares these three versions, he needs to note the difference in backgrounds in each case. The RSV is, of course, not a new translation, but as the name indicates, it is a revision of the old King James Version. Its purpose is to bring the Authorized Version up-to-date, modernizing words and phrases that might not be intelligible to the reader of the 20th century.

Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong Aug 1970

Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The eschatology of 2 Thess. 2:1-12 has been a perennial problem for biblical interpreters. The language of the chapter is very different from that which Paul uses in his other epistles. He exhorts the Thessalonians not to be excited about the coming of the day of the Lord, "for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed …" (verse 3). When the appears, he will exalt himself "against every so-called god or object of worship, so that be takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God" …

Israel And The Nations: The Mission Motif In The Old Testament With Reference To The Yahwistic Passages Of The Pentateuch, To Deutero-Isaiah And To The Book Of Jonah, Arockiam Rajaian Aug 1970

Israel And The Nations: The Mission Motif In The Old Testament With Reference To The Yahwistic Passages Of The Pentateuch, To Deutero-Isaiah And To The Book Of Jonah, Arockiam Rajaian

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The object of this study is to investigate the mission motif in the life and thought of the people of Israel in three different periods in the nation's history, namely, the early monarchical period, the exilic period, and the post-exilic period. The inquiry seeks to determine whether or not Israel had a mission to the gentile nations during the Old Testament period, the nature of that mission, and the ways in which that mission was to be carried out. An attempt will also be made to discern the difference in emphasis in the three different periods and how the situations …

The Secret Of God's Plan: Studies In Ephesians Part Four, Martin H. Scharlemann Jul 1970

The Secret Of God's Plan: Studies In Ephesians Part Four, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

This fourth and final study in the Letter to the Ephesians depicts the scope of God's secret plan for the universe. It follows the previous expositions of the content and implementation of the divine mystery as well as the opposition to God's purpose of restoring the universe by gathering up all things under the lordship of Christ.

The Secret Of God's Plan: Studies In Ephesians Part Three, Martin H. Scharlemann Jun 1970

The Secret Of God's Plan: Studies In Ephesians Part Three, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our first study in Ephesians in the present series dealt with the content of God's eternal plan of redemption. The second study was devoted to the implementation of the mystery of God's will. In this third part we must turn to a consideration of the opposition to what Luther called the "good and gracious will of God."
