In glowing language the apostle had pointed out to his troubled and sorrowing fellow-pilgrims through a dark and dreary world the bright and shining star of Christian hope, every word throbbing with intense longing for the realization of his glorious vision. He had spoken of a hope which is not content with the fleeting joys and pleasures of this world, with the passing honors and glories of this · time. No, Christian hope raises its eye to the world to come and expectantly looks forward to eternity for the realization of its desires. It looks forward to "an inheritance incorruptible …

This interesting and timely passage is part of an argument against strife and dissensions which threatened to disrupt the congregation at Corinth. Instead of laying the stress where it properly belonged, on the preaching of Christ Crucified, the Corinthians attached themselves to the personality of the various preachers and extolled the special gifts and characteristics of these men and at the some time despised the other teachers and their adherents to such an extent that they were in danger of losing sight of the unity of the Gospel of Christ, of creating schisms and disruptions. The apostle had called their …

Every preacher is under a debt of lasting gratitude to the patient plodders who have selected the various series of pericopes. The expository preacher especially is happy and contented in mind when he has a preselected portion of Holy Writ before him to be treated homiletically; for he is convinced that " the text, the text, is the thing wherein he'll find the message of his King." With this conviction, mingled perhaps with a slight misgiving that the present text is somewhat long, we begin our labor in the Word by reading the seventeen verses in the Authorized Version.

The writer has been very forcefully reminded of this word of St. Paul by two articles which have recently appeared in two prominent and widely read journals, one in the Atlantic Monthly for January, the other in the Literary Digest of January 25. The former of the two articles is entitled "The Antireligious Front,” by William L Sullivan, and its purpose is to ridicule the antireligious vagaries of ungodly men who are "wise in their own conceit.” Two sections of this article particularly appeal to me, and will, I think, appeal to others, as masterly presentations of the folly of …

Pentecost, 1930 A. D., which reminds us that the nineteen hundredth anniversary of the great day described Acts 2 is upon us. And the Lord, who sent His Holy Spirit in accordance with His promise, has not yet returned. "from thence" in His glory, as He has also promised. Faithful is He that promised, and He it is who calls to us even now: "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches."

Paul’s life and teachings form also the subject of this essay, insofar as they apply to the office and work of the pastor. Since his letters to the Corinthians are the most valuable in giving us information on just this phase, the essay will be limited to passages taken from these two books or the Bible. The essay is divided into two parts: I. The Pastor; and II. The Pastor's Problems.

V.14: "Seeing, then, that we have a great High Priest that is pleased into the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession." The author speaks of n great High Priest. The office of priest and high priest was instituted by God Himself in the Old Testament. Ex. 28, 1-3; Heb. 5, 4. Priests were to be mediators between God and men, Heb. 2, 17; G, 1; cf. Ex.18, 19; to maintain and, if necessary, to reestablish the covenant relations between God and His people. For this purpose they wero to offer up sacrifices, Heb. 5, …

A thorough study of this text, the Eisenach Epistle-lesson. for Septuageaima, will confirm the impression received by a casual reading of the words that their import is an exhortation of the Apostle Paul to the congregation at Philippi to remain steadfast in the faith of the Gospel and united in spirit, in spite of all hindrances that might come from without or within. It will be found quite convenient to group the various items found in the text under any, theme which express the above thought.
