Teens In The Somali Diaspora: An Evaluative Program Study, Jennifer Skuza Dec 2019

Teens In The Somali Diaspora: An Evaluative Program Study, Jennifer Skuza

Journal of Youth Development

Program evaluation is a critical part of program sustainability because evaluation can inform improvements and document impact. Here, 2 Minnesota organizations came together in partnership with the Somali American community to work toward a shared vision, which was to develop a new sustainable program that prepared refugee and immigrant youth for their educational and workforce futures while supporting their cultural way of being. This article shares the evaluative study of this program, which reached teens in the Somali diaspora living in Minnesota. The program team had a long-term interest in developing an evidence-based model to suit this special population; this …

Guiding Principles For Reaching And Engaging Latinx Youth In Youth Development Programs, Fe Moncloa, Nancy Erbstein, Aarti Subramaniam, Claudia Diaz Carrasco

Journal of Youth Development

This qualitative study presents practices associated with sustained youth engagement at 13 Latinx-serving youth development programs located in 3 California counties: 1 rural, 1 suburban, and 1 urban. Empirical findings reflect 5 key dimensions of practice: (a) integrate extended understandings of positive youth development, (b) support positive ethnic identity development, (c) contend with physiological and social effects of discrimination, (d) respond to the ramifications of economic poverty, and (e) act upon the diversity of local and regional Latinx experience. Study findings translate into guiding principles that youth development programs are encouraged to operationalize based on local interests, needs, and resources.

Understanding Youths’ Educational Aspirations In The Somali Diaspora, Joanna Tzenis Dec 2019

Understanding Youths’ Educational Aspirations In The Somali Diaspora, Joanna Tzenis

Journal of Youth Development

This article shares findings from a 10-month qualitative longitudinal study that offer insight into the educational aspirations of American youth (grades 6-9) who belong to the Minnesota Somali diaspora and highlight the social and cultural influences that shape these aspirations. The findings show that while the majority of youth participants (at one point in the study) expressed that they wanted to become doctors in the future, these aspirations were informed by family values around helping others in Somalia—not an interest in medicine or science. The findings also demonstrate that through time, as the high school youth began to engage more …

Examining The Impact Of Trauma-Informed Care Training On Educators' Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behavior: A Qualitative Study, Emily Smith Schafer Aug 2019

Examining The Impact Of Trauma-Informed Care Training On Educators' Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behavior: A Qualitative Study, Emily Smith Schafer

All Dissertations

According to the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), nearly 35 million children in the United States have experienced one or more types of significant childhood trauma. In the average public school, this statistic translates to as many as half of the students in a given teacher's classroom. Children exposed to the toxic stress of trauma often experience negative consequences that affect their academic, psychological, social-emotional, and behavioral health. To aid educators in addressing this reality, trauma-informed care practices have increasingly begun to be translated into professional development opportunities for educators. One such training, Compassionate Schools, has been recently evaluated …

Community Bike Shops As Youth Development Programs: Influences On Mobility & Accessibility Of Youth Participants, Adrienne Warren May 2019

Community Bike Shops As Youth Development Programs: Influences On Mobility & Accessibility Of Youth Participants, Adrienne Warren

All Theses

Lack of mobility in low-moderate income neighborhoods can lead to mobility-based social exclusion and can contribute to a path of generational poverty, diminished quality of life, among other health and socio-economic disadvantages for residents. Community bike shops provide opportunities for youth residents in low-moderate income neighborhoods to learn new mechanical and riding skills through earn-a-bike programs in addition to providing access to a bicycle and facilitate group riding experiences. These new experiences can improve student’s mobility and accessibility and thus help alleviate mobility-based exclusion. A mixed methods case study of two community bike shops, Village Wrench in Greenville, South Carolina …

Realmente Tenemos La Capacidad: Engaging Youth To Explore Health In The Dominican Republic Through Photovoice, Catalina Tang Yan, Arelis Moore De Peralta, Edmond P. Bowers, Linda Sprague Martinez

Publications

Youth are often at risk for physical and psychosocial illnesses, and yet their input is rarely included in health assessments and interventions. Two U.S.-based universities partnered with community stakeholders and youth in Las Malvinas II, Dominican Republic to explore factors that promote and/or hinder the health of youth in Las Malvinas II. Youth (n=8) conducted a photovoice, and identified six key health priorities: (1) good nutrition, (2) depression and poverty, (3) violence, (4) sports and neighborhood association, (5) education, and (6) sanitation and community infrastructure. Findings revealed youth’s exploration of complex multi-level determinants of health. This study suggests youth have …

Improving Youth Access To Mental Health Support Through A Youth–Adult Partnership, Laurie Ross, Lindsay Carpenter Connors Dec 2018

Improving Youth Access To Mental Health Support Through A Youth–Adult Partnership, Laurie Ross, Lindsay Carpenter Connors

Journal of Youth Development

Mental and behavioral health disorders are major issues facing young people in the United States; yet, the majority of youth who need support do not get help. Young people tend not to get help for 2 interacting reasons: system barriers that prevent youth from seeking help, and personal reasons that can influence them to forgo treatment. Youth–Adult Partnerships (Y-APs) have the potential to improve mental health programming and increase service utilization because they create space to blend youth and service provider knowledge and experience. This article provides a detailed case study of a youth–adult partnership’s 2-year community assessment and strategic …

Online Child’S Health Assessment Tool For Obesity Prevention Programming, Laura Palmer, Kimberly Mccarthy, Daniel Perkins, Lynne Borden Dec 2018

Online Child’S Health Assessment Tool For Obesity Prevention Programming, Laura Palmer, Kimberly Mccarthy, Daniel Perkins, Lynne Borden

Journal of Youth Development

To optimize public health in the next decade, prevention of childhood obesity will remain a central focus. To impact behavioral change, data must be linked to continuous quality improvements within existing nutrition and physical activity programming. The Children, Youth, and Families At-Risk Professional Development and Technical Assistance Center has developed a picture-based, online survey tool, the CYFAR Health Assessment Tool (CHAT), to assess health behaviors in youth ages 6 to18 years of age. Used for continuous program improvement, aggregate data results are coupled with tailored health recommendations in 4 domains (behavior and environmental modifications, education, and direct strategies) and evidence-informed …

Developing Youth Competencies: The Impact Of Program Quality, Tegan Smischney, Matthew Roberts, Kate Gliske, Lynne Borden Dec 2018

Developing Youth Competencies: The Impact Of Program Quality, Tegan Smischney, Matthew Roberts, Kate Gliske, Lynne Borden

Journal of Youth Development

As youth programs have continued to evolve over the last 100 years, the field of program evaluation has advanced significantly in an effort to differentiate which youth program components are necessary to promote positive youth development (e.g., Eccles & Gootman, 2002; Lerner et al., 2013). The Children, Youth, and Families at Risk (CYFAR) initiative funds a variety of sustainable community projects (SCPs) that aim to support at-risk youth and families and help them become healthy, positive, and contributing members of society (U.S. Department of Agriculture, n.d.). To ensure these programs are meeting CYFAR’s goals, a required collection of common measures …

Developing A Common Evaluation Tool For Camps, Kendra Lewis, Marianne Bird, Tamekia Wilkins, John Borba Dec 2018

Developing A Common Evaluation Tool For Camps, Kendra Lewis, Marianne Bird, Tamekia Wilkins, John Borba

Journal of Youth Development

Evaluation has become a standard for youth programming, to provide both evidence for improvement recommendations and an assessment of program outcomes. Having a common evaluation tool across programs (in this case, camps) is beneficial in aggregating measurements and understanding similarities and differences between programs. The purpose of this paper is to describe the process of working with the California 4-H Camping Advisory Committee to develop a common evaluation tool for all California 4-H camps, and to share initial findings from the instrument. We present results from two years of data collection, and the multiple uses of the findings

Camp And College Parallels: Crucibles For Transition-Linked Turning-Points, Lisa K.-P. Olsen, Gwynn Powell, Barry Garst, Robert Bixler Dec 2018

Camp And College Parallels: Crucibles For Transition-Linked Turning-Points, Lisa K.-P. Olsen, Gwynn Powell, Barry Garst, Robert Bixler

Journal of Youth Development

This conceptual paper explores how the system of experiences that children encounter in a traditional, residential summer camp setting parallel traditional, residential, college setting for first-year students. Camp is a complex system in the sphere of youth development programs (YDP) because of the expectation for rapid adjustment by the camper to a novel physical and social environment. Many YDPs have a moderate to high level of connection with the child’s normal life, defined as similar to school or home environments and the activities in which youth regularly participate. A traditional residential summer camp offers a different degree of novelty than …

Informing Youth Health And Well-Being Programs: A National 4-H Healthy Living Evaluation Study, Donna Peterson, Laura Downey, Joanne Leatherman Dec 2018

Informing Youth Health And Well-Being Programs: A National 4-H Healthy Living Evaluation Study, Donna Peterson, Laura Downey, Joanne Leatherman

Journal of Youth Development

4-H Healthy Living programs address healthy eating; physical activity; social-emotional health and well-being; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use prevention; and injury prevention. Using the Systematic Screening and Assessment Method, this paper identified 32 4-H Healthy Living programs across the nation ready for comprehensive outcome evaluation and/or national replication based on 6 criteria. Weaknesses in an additional 78 programs that did not meet the criteria were also identified. Programs that failed to meet the criteria did so primarily because they lacked a clearly delineated theory of change or appropriate evaluation. Implications for practice include ways to strengthen program planning and …

Campus Immersion: Supporting Youth Agency And Aspirations For Higher Education, Joanna Tzenis Dec 2018

Campus Immersion: Supporting Youth Agency And Aspirations For Higher Education, Joanna Tzenis

Journal of Youth Development

Encouraging aspirations for higher education among young people who are marginalized is a common youth program strategy for addressing educational and social disparities. However, data on educational attainment suggests that these aspirations often go unfulfilled and that there is a need for a different approach—one that more deeply considers the ways in which social context influences youth agency. Within this paper, I show that while marginalized youth have aspirations for higher education, they have fewer opportunities to take action to achieve them. Conceptually, this paper draws from Bourdieu’s concept of “habitus” and Sen’s capability approach in order to understand the …

Parents’ And Youths’ Solicitation And Disclosure Of Information In Today’S Digital Age, Jessie Rudi, Jodi Dworkin Dec 2018

Parents’ And Youths’ Solicitation And Disclosure Of Information In Today’S Digital Age, Jessie Rudi, Jodi Dworkin

Journal of Youth Development

Extensive research has identified parental monitoring to be a protective factor for youth. Parental monitoring includes parents’ solicitation of information from their child and the child’s voluntary disclosure of information. In today’s digital society, parental monitoring can occur using technology, such as text messaging, email, and social networking sites. The current study describes parents’ and youths’ communication technology use explicitly to solicit and share information with each other in a sample of 56 parent–youth dyads from the same family (youth were 13 to 25 years old). We also examined associations between in-person parental monitoring, parental monitoring using technology, parental knowledge, …

Heart And Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, Jill Baker-Tingey, Pamela Powell, Crystal Powell Dec 2018

Heart And Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, Jill Baker-Tingey, Pamela Powell, Crystal Powell

Journal of Youth Development

Children exposed to domestic violence (DV) inadvertently learn behaviors that make them more likely to become victims and/or perpetrators later in life unless they learn skills to address childhood trauma. This article discusses how two rural community needs assessments identified that DV prevention was a high-priority issue, the effects of DV on youth mental and physical health, and the resulting Heart and Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, a Cooperative Extension program designed to strengthen family relationships and break the cycle of violence. Implications for practice include helping youth build healthy relationships, incorporating DV awareness training in staff/volunteer professional development, collaborating …

Examining Predictors Of Implementation Quality In An Emerging International Extension Context, Ryan J. Gagnon, Jonathan Pettigrew Aug 2018

Examining Predictors Of Implementation Quality In An Emerging International Extension Context, Ryan J. Gagnon, Jonathan Pettigrew

Publications

In this article, we explore a component of evidence-based programming—implementation quality—within an emerging international Extension context. Specifically, we examine how the traits, characteristics, and perceptions of 46 program facilitators influenced their support of maintaining implementation quality in a Nicaraguan youth violence and substance abuse prevention program, Dale se REAL. The results indicated that of four potential variables, only facilitator buy-in to the Dale se REAL program was a meaningful predictor of implementation support. The implications of the study findings, relative to evidence-based Extension research in both the United States and an emerging international context, are discussed.

Exploring The Intersection Of Adolescents And Adults On The Autism Spectrum Enrolled In An Outdoor Behavioral Health Program, Denise K. Savidge

All Dissertations

This exploratory study examined an existing data set containing outcome scores of adolescents and adults on the autism spectrum who were enrolled in 18 different outdoor behavioral health programs in the United States, all of whom are members or cooperating programs of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) Practice Research Network. The dataset contained demographic characteristics and self-reported psychosocial functioning of the participants at intake and again at discharge. Data suggest that the self-reported outcome scores for both adolescents and adults demonstrated statistically significant change after the intervention, but when examined for clinical significance, adolescent paired scores …

Youth-Adult Partnerships In Work With Youth: An Overview, Heather Ramey, Heather Lawford, Wolfgang Vachon Dec 2017

Youth-Adult Partnerships In Work With Youth: An Overview, Heather Ramey, Heather Lawford, Wolfgang Vachon

Journal of Youth Development

Youth-adult partnerships in child and youth services engage the participants in collaborative, shared decision making, in areas such as governance, program planning and implementation, and advocacy. However, these partnerships often occur in isolation, and fail to engage in potentially useful, larger conversations about theory and research. Therefore, in an effort to provide common grounds for understanding and engaging in such partnerships, we offer an overview of current literature. We discuss definitions and discourses, describe models of youth-adult partnerships, and briefly consider current research on potential benefits for youth, adults, organizations, and communities. We also present challenges and promising practices for …

Colleges And Universities: Prime Habitat For Hunter Recruitment And Retention, Brett Jonathon Stayton Aug 2017

Colleges And Universities: Prime Habitat For Hunter Recruitment And Retention, Brett Jonathon Stayton

All Theses

Hunting has played a prominent role throughout American history and continues to serve many important social, economic, and ecological functions in our society today. However, hunting participation in the United States is in a gradual state of decline. Today, less than 5% of the population hunts. In hopes of reversing these trends, many state fish and wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, and hunting and shooting sports industries have increasingly invested in new programs designed to enhance the recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of new hunters from non-traditional hunting backgrounds. For example, many R3 initiatives have been designed to focus on women, …

Practice What We Preach: Supervisory Practice For Youth Worker Professional Development, Angel Peluso Jan 2017

Practice What We Preach: Supervisory Practice For Youth Worker Professional Development, Angel Peluso

Journal of Youth Development

As a practitioner-researcher in the NorthStar Youth Worker Fellowship and a youth program supervisor, I have seen that adults who work directly with youth need to be partners in their own development just as they partner with young people to encourage their development. A workplace that partners in developing its youth workers actively encourages three things: authentic relationships, emotional safety, and reflective learning. In this article I share how I began exploring this topic and its implications for organizations. Bringing authentic relationships, safety, and reflective learning into the workplace provides a model of effective professional development of front-line youth workers.

Where’D You Hear That? Examining The Importance Of Individuals And Institutions In Providing Knowledge To At-Risk Adolescents About Their Local Community, Rosemary Barnett, Paige Combee, Caroline Payne-Purvis

Journal of Youth Development

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between individuals and institutions when providing information to at-risk youth. This research examined how community issues are translated to 302 at-risk youth participants in two community-based after school programs. It specifically sought to identify the individuals and institutions where adolescents self-reported that they receive information from about community issues and whether there were relationships between these two entities. At-risk youth self-reported learning about community issues from key individuals and institutional connections. Positive correlations were found between all of the individuals and institutions, which indicate youth receive information about their communities …

Indoor Competition Climbing As A Context For Positive Youth Development, Barry Garst, Garrett Stone, Ryan Gagnon Oct 2016

Indoor Competition Climbing As A Context For Positive Youth Development, Barry Garst, Garrett Stone, Ryan Gagnon

Journal of Youth Development

Climbing as a competitive youth sport is rapidly expanding in both participation and popularity as it has transitioned from an unorganized recreational activity to a formalized sport with a national governing body, organized competitions, formal coaching, and team structure. In spite of this growth, little to no research has been conducted regarding indoor competition climbing as a developmental experience for youth. This study examined the contributions of indoor competition climbing to youth development outcomes based on qualitative responses collected from 623 parents and climbers (youth and adults) in late Fall 2014. Themes were constructed related to climbing as a youth …

“Yet” ~ A Brief School-Based Program For Fourth Graders, Sandra Rogelberg, Benjamin Uhrich, Leann Caudill, Shahar Gur

Journal of Youth Development

“Yet” is a school-based youth development program intended to introduce elementary grade students to concepts of growth mindset, self-leadership, resilience and self-talk to promote healthy coping strategies to persist in tasks toward more positive educational outcomes. Drawing from psychology, education, and management literature focusing on self-leadership, the “Yet” program encourages interaction and internalization of concepts such as “growing the brain,” and “stinkin’ thinking,” while modeling how to reframe set-backs to things students have not mastered…”yet,” and practicing adaptive self-talk to promote coping and persistence. This unique program holds promise because it is approximately 30 minutes long, occurs within the context …
