Harnessing Irrationality, Jennifer E. Smith

All Theses

My thesis work considers the presence of objectifying gazes in representations of women in Western visual media and pop culture. I reference film, television, short form content shared on social media, and pornography to identify and repurpose tools of objectification in my large scale drawings and animated GIFs. I compare the objectifying tropes present in contemporary entertainment media and pop culture to those present in the Western art historical tradition of the reclining female nude, mythology and folklore, and pornography. Using these comparisons, I discuss objectification in terms of passive and active, consumption and appetite, and idealization and devaluation. I …

Macroevolution Of Bold Color Patterns Across Teleostean Fishes, Katerina Zapfe Aug 2021

Macroevolution Of Bold Color Patterns Across Teleostean Fishes, Katerina Zapfe

All Theses

Fishes include some of the most visually striking vertebrate radiations and have repeatedly evolved bold color patterns, including bars, stripes, and spots. Such strong color patterns are hypothesized to provide multiple functions, including avoiding predation by obscuring recognizable features and communicating with others to secure territories and mates. Despite increasing focus on the functions and proximate drivers of color pattern evolution, the relevance of such pressures across broad taxonomic and time scales remain much less resolved. Using over 5000 species within the largest vertebrate radiation, teleostean fishes, I employ phylogenetic comparative methods to explore the lability and potential coevolutionary relationships …

All Dissertations

This dissertation investigates rhetorical situatedness as a factor that culturally designates users’ motives in adopting a new technology. The application of Kenneth Burke’s dramatism extends the discussion about the situation where an interaction takes place to include acting and meaning-making in Non-Western settings as contextual and situated. This expansion is essential to reinforce the understanding of how cultural contexts impact users’ motives, specifically users from Non-Western settings, to adopt a technology. The traditional Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research stresses mechanical and technical aspects between a user (agent) and a technology device (agency) in order to reduce user errors. This approach isolates …

Cooperation As A Coping Mechanism When Interpreting Between Deaf Refugees And Hearing Professionals, Elisabet Trengereid Olsen

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This article describes interpreting between deaf refugees and hearing professionals in community settings, with a focus on cooperation. Extensive communication barriers characterize these situations, as deaf interlocutors and interpreters do not share languages. The situations require interpreters with the ability to communicate visually and use unconventional forms of communication, not depending solely on formalized signed languages when interpreting. Based on interviews with signed language interpreters in qualitative focus groups, this article shows how interpreters in these situations convey meaning between the interlocutors, and how establishing cooperation with the hearing interlocutor is a coping strategy in that regard. The article also …

Sunshine, Katherine Elizabeth Crossan Dec 2019

Sunshine, Katherine Elizabeth Crossan

All Theses

Sunshine is a story about growing up. It’s a story that I feel is important to tell, because it’s a hardship that everyone can relate to. By sharing a story that other people can understand, I can create a connection between myself and my audience; or a feeling of empathy. I chose to tell this story through film, so I could share my story primarily through images, or visual narrative. Sunshine is currently in its animatic state, which is the preliminary version of the film. The animatic, or story reel, consists of the film’s storyboards put together and timed out …

Shattering The Crystal Goblet: Seeking A Pedagogy Of Visuality In Post - Typographic Expository Texts, David Reinking

Publications

This article synthesizes diverse theoretical perspectives toward developing a pedagogy that addresses the visuality of digital texts. To frame those perspectives and their implications, I use a well - known analogy that Beatrice Warde introduced to typographers in the 1930s: drinking wine from a golden cup or a crystal goblet. I briefly review the theory and research related to visual aspects of texts, generating pedagogical perspectives from several prominent theories and perspectives. I then discuss, illustrated with a few examples, how these pedagogical perspectives might be instantiated in curriculum and instruction and the issues and challenges of doing so. I …
