An Examination Of Food Insecurity And Its Impact On Violent Crime In American Communities, Jonathan Randel Caughron Dec 2016

An Examination Of Food Insecurity And Its Impact On Violent Crime In American Communities, Jonathan Randel Caughron

All Theses

Food insecurity has been shown to have a negative impact on the health andpsychological well-being of those who suffer from it. Brinkman and Cullen (2011) havealso conducted research that shows food insecurity leads to increased incidences ofviolence and civil conflict in developing nations. However, very little research has beenconducted to examine a potential link between food insecurity and violence in developednations. This paper examines a potential link between food insecurity and the violentcrime rate in the United States at a county level using a least squares regressiontechnique. It also examines how the relationship between food insecurity and violentcrime varies in …

Uptake Of Actinides And Nuclear Fission Products In Graminaceous And Nongraminaceous Plants, Stephanie Lynn Ely

All Theses

Radionuclides exist within the environment naturally and also from release during nuclear power and weapons production. The ability of plants to uptake radionuclides may prove beneficial for exploitation in the field of phytoremediation and as a biomonitor within the field of nuclear forensics. The fact that plants have the ability to take up radionuclides as an unintended metabolic process is well known, however, the mechanisms through which uptake occur present large gaps within the current research. Therefore, gaining further knowledge regarding overall plant radionuclide uptake and specific mechanisms may prove as an invaluable tool to enhance phytoremediation and nuclear forensic …

The Cellular And Molecular Characterization Of Essential Hypertension Using Innovative Pathology Models, Joshua T. Rodriguez Dec 2016

The Cellular And Molecular Characterization Of Essential Hypertension Using Innovative Pathology Models, Joshua T. Rodriguez

All Theses

Essential hypertension, characterized by elevated blood pressure levels, is a primary risk factor for other cardiovascular diseases. There has been a drastic rise in the amount of people who have essential hypertension; trends predict that 1.56 billion people worldwide will be living with essential hypertension by 2025. Anti-hypertensive drugs lower elevated blood pressure levels, but do not eliminate the disease itself or reverse the structural damage to arteries. This study aims to elucidate hypertension-induced endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction using a blood vessel tissue engineering approach as a pathology model. In order to characterize EC dysfunction, the FlexCell® system was used …

Effect Of Sourdough Fermentation Parameters On Bread Properties, Grace W. Couch Dec 2016

Effect Of Sourdough Fermentation Parameters On Bread Properties, Grace W. Couch

All Theses

Sourdough is the oldest form of leavening which many believe was invented by the Egyptians. Bread leavened with a sourdough culture relies on the metabolism of naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria and wild yeasts. Historically there were many ties between beer brewing and bread baking. In the fourteen and fifteen hundreds, it was discovered that brewers yeast could also be used to leaven bread. Up until the invention of commercial yeast in the nineteenth century, sourdough cultures and brewers yeast where the only bread leavening methods. By 1910, traditional sourdough was much less common because bread made with commercial yeast …

Malnutrition is a prevalent, serious, and often unrecognized health threat for older adults in the United States. The prevalence estimates of malnutrition in the elderly are highly variable as methods for detection are not standardized. It is dependent on the use of the different available tools, the population being studied, and the different settings (living at home, institutionalized, or hospitalized) The purpose of this study was to determine the spatial variation of the nutritional risk of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) service recipients in South Carolina (SC) using factors that influence the nutritional status of older adults included in the …

Evaluating Indirect Calorimetry Methodology, Postural Energy Expenditure, And The Effects Of Diet And Exercise Recommendations, Collin Jeffrey Popp Dec 2016

Evaluating Indirect Calorimetry Methodology, Postural Energy Expenditure, And The Effects Of Diet And Exercise Recommendations, Collin Jeffrey Popp

All Dissertations

Scientific research provides the evidence necessary to build an effective framework for health recommendations. In a population of young, healthy adults the recommended duration of an indirect calorimetry measurement period when measuring resting energy expenditure was a minimum of 10 minutes, with the first 5-minutes being discarded. A steady state period was achieved during the second 5-minute segment of a 30-minute period. Furthermore, in a population of young women, short-term standing energy expenditure was statically greater than lying and sitting energy expenditure. However, recommendations to stand instead of sit may be negligible as the magnitude of the effect of short-term …

Genetic Study Of Grain Yield And Quality Traits In Sorghum, Richard E. Boyles Iii Dec 2016

Genetic Study Of Grain Yield And Quality Traits In Sorghum, Richard E. Boyles Iii

All Dissertations

Farming begins with a seed, and having the proper genetics within that seed to match the environment and management practices is critical. Plant breeders can be more effective at tailoring crop cultivars and hybrids when the genetic mechanisms of key traits are understood. The scope of this study was to investigate the natural diversity, genetic regions, and individual genes that are associated with components of grain yield and quality in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench]. These traits were characterized in different environments, years, and populations to observe the variation and interactions that exist and allow for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) …

Using Soil Conditioners To Improve Soil Physiochemical Properties And Agricultural Productivity In Libya, Gandura Abagandura Dec 2016

Using Soil Conditioners To Improve Soil Physiochemical Properties And Agricultural Productivity In Libya, Gandura Abagandura

All Dissertations

The results of Libyan agricultural review confirmed that soil degradation and limited freshwater resources are the primary causes of the country’s dependence on food imports. The intrusion of the seawater into the groundwater is causing soils to become salt-affected. In addition, many crops in the country are susceptible to pests. The spatial distribution of soil degradation occurrence and type were predicted using regression models, estimating that 666 882 km2 (53.5 %) of Libyan soils are degraded with 46.4 % due to salinization, 6.4 % water erosion and 0.66 % wind erosion.

The majority of the soils in Libya are sandy …

Release And Degradation Of Microcystin-Lr Following Exposures Of Microcystis To Copper-Based Algaecides, Kyla Iwinski Dec 2016

Release And Degradation Of Microcystin-Lr Following Exposures Of Microcystis To Copper-Based Algaecides, Kyla Iwinski

All Dissertations

Microcystins (MCs) are hepatotoxic endotoxins produced by cyanobacteria such as Microcystis that can cause both ecological and human health risks, as well as economic losses in freshwater resources. The use of copper-based algaecides to manage MC-producing cyanobacteria is sometimes limited due to perceived risks of MC release from cyanobacterial cells and persistence of toxins in water resources. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of copper concentration and form on MC release and persistence, as well as potential consequences of “no-action” management decisions (i.e. no treatment). To achieve these objectives, a tiered approach was employed utilizing both …

Synchrony In A Boolean Network Of The L-Arabinose Operon In Escherichia Coli, Andy Jenkins, Matthew Macauley Nov 2016

Synchrony In A Boolean Network Of The L-Arabinose Operon In Escherichia Coli, Andy Jenkins, Matthew Macauley

Publications

The lactose operon in Escherichia coli was the first known gene regulatory network, and it is frequently used as a prototype for new modeling paradigms. Historically, many of these modeling frameworks use differential equations. More recently, Stigler and Veliz-Cuba proposed a Boolean network model that captures the bistability of the system and all of the biological steady states. In this paper, we model the well-known arabinose operon in E. coli with a Boolean network. This has several complex features not found in the lac operon, such as a protein that is both an activator and repressor, a DNA looping mechanism …

Publications

Flavodoxin (Fld) plays a pivotal role in photosynthetic microorganisms as an alternative electron carrier flavoprotein under adverse environmental conditions. Cyanobacterial Fld has been demonstrated to be able to substitute ferredoxin (Fd) of higher plants in most electron transfer processes under stressful conditions. We have explored the potential of Fld for use in improving plant stress response in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.). Overexpression of Fld altered plant growth and development. Most significantly, transgenic (TG) plants exhibited drastically enhanced performance under oxidative, drought and heat stress as well as nitrogen (N) starvation, which was associated with higher water retention and …

The Role Of Developmental Plasticity In Response To Salinity On The Evolution Of Alternative Reproductive Tactics In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Poeciliidae: Poecilia: Mollienesia), Kelly Elise Hogan Aug 2016

The Role Of Developmental Plasticity In Response To Salinity On The Evolution Of Alternative Reproductive Tactics In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Poeciliidae: Poecilia: Mollienesia), Kelly Elise Hogan

All Theses

Variability in life history and morphology across conspecific populations is a widespread phenomenon and may be attributed to life history trade-offs in response to environmental variation. Such trade-offs between growth, maintenance, and reproduction often occur via developmental plasticity, which allows organisms to shift their developmental trajectories to maximize fitness in a given environment. Sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna) exhibit interpopulation variation in life history and morphological traits, and inhabit springs, tidal creeks, and estuaries that range from freshwater to seawater. Male size at maturity is smaller on average in freshwater springs than in brackish water marshes where these fish are most …

Mixotrophic Cultivation Of Microalgae For Biomass Production Optimization Using Statistical Methods, Ning Zhang Aug 2016

Mixotrophic Cultivation Of Microalgae For Biomass Production Optimization Using Statistical Methods, Ning Zhang

All Theses

Microalgae have received considerable attention as a potential source for the thirdgeneration biofuel. Various products including biodiesel could be obtained from the algalbiomass. In this study, the green algae Chlorella protothecoides was cultured inmixotrophic mode – under the light from a LED lamp and supplemented with organiccarbon and nitrogen sources. The carbon and nitrogen sources were selected for theircapabilities to sustain algae growth, and their low cost as industrial by-products. Crudeglycerol was derived from the biodiesel production process and the spent brewer’s yeastwas the remaining yeast after beer fermentation. Both were subject to certainpretreatment steps before being mixed with the …
