The Synthesis, Characterization, And Electrochemical Study Of Tris(Pyrazolyl)-Type Iron(Ii) Complexes, Iron(Ii) Sulfur- And Selenium-Containing Complexes, And Tris(Pyrazolyl)-Type Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes, Christopher Underwood
The Synthesis, Characterization, And Electrochemical Study Of Tris(Pyrazolyl)-Type Iron(Ii) Complexes, Iron(Ii) Sulfur- And Selenium-Containing Complexes, And Tris(Pyrazolyl)-Type Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes, Christopher Underwood
All Theses
Highly reactive radical species such as hydroxyl radical cause oxidative stress, resulting in chronic or degenerative diseases. In the biological Fenton reaction, iron(II) generates hydroxyl radical, OH, but only within a specific electrochemical potential window (-324 mV to 640 mV). Selenium and sulfur compounds have been extensively studied for their antioxidant properties, and they may exert their effects by binding iron(II) and shifting its electrochemical potential out of this window. This work has investigated the synthesis and electrochemical characterization of iron(II) chalcogenate complexes and iron(II) chalcogenone complexes. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) of [Fe(EPh)4][(PPh4)2] (E = S, Se) complexes shows Fe2+/3+ redox …

Development Of A Carbohydrate Microarray System And A Microcantilever-Based Biosensor For Detection Of Target Bacteria, Yunyan Cheng
Development Of A Carbohydrate Microarray System And A Microcantilever-Based Biosensor For Detection Of Target Bacteria, Yunyan Cheng
All Theses
The increasing number of disease outbreaks results in a demand for novel pathogen detectors. Carbohydrates serving as receptors for pathogen lectins have become the focus of such research. Two primary sugars, ‡-D-mannose and ‡-L-fucose, as receptors for Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively, are of great interest to researchers due to their high affinity. These interactions can be studied using carbohydrate microarrays, which are also suitable platforms for detecting bacterial pathogens. In addition, carbohydrates have the potential to act as sensing molecules in microcantilever-based biosensors. The goal of this research was to design a carbohydrate microarray system to study the …
Isolation, Characterization And Application Of Bacteriophage To Treat Hydrogen Sulfide Producing Bacteria In Raw Animal Materials Destined For The Rendering Process, Chao Gong
All Theses
In the United States, billions of pounds of animal by-products are generated by the food processing industry every year. Hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria (SPB) can utilize the sulfur-containing proteins and amino acids in the raw animal materials destined for the rendering process to produce harmful hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas rapidly under the ambient conditions, resulting in hazardous working environments and inferior quality of finished products. In this study, the application of bacteriophage was explored as an effective solution for the elimination of H2S production in the rendering industry. The objectives of this study were to: 1) isolate and characterize strains …
Determining The Global Maximum Biofuel Production Potential Without Conflicting With Food And Feed Consumption, Watcharapol Pumkaew
Determining The Global Maximum Biofuel Production Potential Without Conflicting With Food And Feed Consumption, Watcharapol Pumkaew
All Theses
This study tries to resolve the competition between food and biofuel by balancing the allocation between food and feed areas and biofuel areas for the entire world. The maximum energy production is calculated by determining the theoretical amount of energy that can be grown, once food and feed consumption is taken into account, based on the assumption that unprotected grass and woody lands and forest lands can be converted into cultivated lands. The total optimum land area for biofuel energy, 4,926.49 Mha, consists of corn, rapeseed, sugar beet, sugar cane, and grasses. When considering energy conversion efficiency, the maximum energy …

Identification And Characterization Of Micrornas In Porcine Gametes And Pre-Implantation Embryos, Erin Curry
All Dissertations
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short ribonucleic acids that ultimately affect the production of proteins. Although miRNAs are involved in nearly every biological process examined to date, little is known of the identity or function of miRNA in porcine reproductive tissues or their potential involvement in reproductive processes in pigs or other species. The objective of this dissertation research was to determine the presence of miRNAs in porcine gametes and both in vivo- and in vitro- produced pre-implantation embryos and to identify differences in miRNA expression between normal and aberrant samples. Using a heterologous RT-PCR approach, we demonstrated the presence of a …
The Genetics Of Metal Uptake In Caulobacter Crescentus: Characterization Of Regulators And Identification Of Receptors, Leah Howell
All Dissertations
Caulobacter crescentus is an oligotrophic, Gram negative bacterium with a dimorphic lifecycle. It is a model system for cell cycle regulation and cellular development. Since C. crescentus resides primarily in freshwater, this microorganism can also serve as a model system for nutrient uptake by oligotrophic freshwater species. This study focused on TonB-dependent receptors and metal-dependent regulators in C. crescentus.
To maintain appropriate levels of iron within the cell, bacteria have evolved mechanisms to control iron uptake, storage, and use. In microbes, there are two protein families possessing members that accomplish this: Fur and Rrf2. In the C. crescentus genome, there …

Addressing Criteria In The Development Of A New 4-H Foods Project, Susan Mcconnell, Jan Scholl
Journal of Youth Development
As youth and society changes, 4-H projects must change and adapt. Make it with Mixes, a 4-H curriculum, provides a new way of looking at food preparation. It may be one of the first state foods projects created without an emphasis on “from scratch” cooking or baking. Aimed at beginning 4-H members, ages 9 to 13, the project teaches cooking skills with the aid of commercial mixes. However, the main focus of the project is on making comparisons between food labels, costs per serving, and recognizing quality food products. Science and mathematics activities are also incorporated into the curriculum. This …
Training For Interpreting In Mental Healthcare In Ireland, Krisztina Zimány
Training For Interpreting In Mental Healthcare In Ireland, Krisztina Zimány
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Interpreting in mental healthcare is a very specialized activity, and given the comparatively low demand, few interpreters receive full-time, area-specific training. As part of a larger research project completed in Ireland, mental health professionals who have worked with interpreters as well as interpreters with experience in working in mental health care shared their views on the subject. The interviews reveal what is available as well as what is lacking in terms of training for this specialised sub-domain of community interpreting. The findings, in general, suggest that there is room for improvement. In addition, there appears to be a difference between …

Local Food: Does It Matter What You Eat?, Brian Raison
Local Food: Does It Matter What You Eat?, Brian Raison
Journal of Youth Development
Everybody eats. Period. Some of us prefer hamburgers. Some like veggies. But what we eat is only the beginning. Increasingly, interest in where our foods are grown and processed has emerged. As numerous grass roots organizations proffer information on local foods, it becomes critical for research-based youth programs to also encourage study on this topic. This article introduces a new curriculum that aims to help students learn about what we eat, where it comes from, and how it impacts the environment. The main goal is to help participants understand the concept of local food systems, how they operate, and how …

Willingness To Pay For Locally Grown And Organically Produced Fruits And Vegetables In Dominica, Seraphine George
All Theses
ABSTRACT
With the intent of improving agricultural revenues and solidifying her place as an eco-tourism destination, it has been proposed that the island nation of The Commonwealth of Dominica convert all agricultural activities to organic production. To meet this challenge from the supply perspective, training of farmers in organic production practices has already begun. It remains, however, to quantify the potential demand for organically produced products. With this information in hand, appropriate producer support and marketing programs could be developed that would help to promote the production and consumption of Dominica‟s organic outputs and would propel Dominica toward its desired …

Genome-Wide Screening For Functional Factors In Listeria Monocytogenes Biofilm Formation, Yong Ouyang
All Theses
ABSTRACT
Listeria monocytogenes is a ubiquitous gram positive food borne pathogen. Ingestion of L.monocytogenes contaminated food can cause serious infections in immune-compromised persons. In addition to planktonic growth, this pathogen can also grow as biofilms under adverse conditions, which has been proved to be more resistant than its planktonic counterpart to various eradications, such as antibiotic treatments. Compared with the extensively studied intracellular replication mechanisms, L.monocytogenes biofilm developmental process is not well understood.
Our research group initiated a systemic study on the molecular mechanisms of L.monocytogenes biofilm formation. A whole genome-scale screening for functional factors involved in L.monocytogenes biofilm development …
