Essays On The Organization And Impact Of Professional Sports, John Jasina

All Dissertations

This thesis contains a collection of essays related to economics and sports. The final essay looks at the growing controversy of publicly funded sports stadiums. Local governments are spending millions of dollars on sports stadiums as a means to spur economic development. Economic impact studies supporting public funding claim that the investment will bring thousands of jobs and additional revenue to the local community. Most of the academic literature on the subject has been less favorable. Much of the literature focused on broad measures of employment in metropolitan statistical areas. In this paper regression analysis is used to investigate the …

Suddenly Directing: An Interview With Florence Doksansky, Eric C. Shoaf

Publications

The article presents an interview with Florence Doksansky, interim university librarian at Brown University. Doksansky served as associate university librarian at Brown for twenty-one years until early 2004 when her supervisor resigned. Doksansky spoke about the challenges of being an interim director at a medium-size Association of Research Libraries library. The library was in the middle of a multi-year reorganization and into the second year of contract talks with unionized nonprofessional support employees who were working without a contract. In addition, budgets weren't keeping pace with inflation, the physical condition of the libraries was deteriorating and a new offsite storage …

Atmospheric Pressure, Glow Discharge, Optical Emission Source For The Direct Sampling Of Liquid Media, Kenneth R. Marcus, Clay W. Davis Feb 2005

Atmospheric Pressure, Glow Discharge, Optical Emission Source For The Direct Sampling Of Liquid Media, Kenneth R. Marcus, Clay W. Davis

Clemson Patents

A glow discharge spectroscopy (GDS) source operates at atmospheric pressure. One of the discharge electrodes of the device is formed by an electrolytic solution 27 containing the analyte specimen. The passage of electrical current (either electrons or positive ions) across the solution/gas phase interface causes local heating and the volatilization of the analyte species. Collisions in the discharge region immediately above the surface of the solution results in optical emission and ionization that are characteristic of the analyte elements. As such, these analyte elements can be identified and quantified by optical emission spectroscopy (OES) or mass spectrometry (MS). The device …
