Chitosan Derivatives For Tissue Engineering, Yongzhi Qiu Aug 2008

Chitosan Derivatives For Tissue Engineering, Yongzhi Qiu

All Dissertations

Chitosan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide, and its derivatives have been widely explored for biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. In our studies, we developed a series of chitosan derivatives through chemical modifications. These chitosan derivatives not only possess better processibility in scaffolds fabrication, but also show excellent potentials in tissue engineering applications, including blood vessel and bone tissue engineering.
The excellent antithrombogenic property is crucial for vascular engineering applications, especially in engineering small-diameter blood vessels. In our studies, chitosan was chemically modified by phthalization and the phthalized chitosan exhibited great antithrombogenic property. Through a wet- phase-inversion process, tubular …

A Comparison Of Sequential And Integrated Data Fusion For Estimating Hydrologic Properties During A Synthetic Gpr Monitored Infiltration Event, Guy Sicilia Jr Aug 2008

A Comparison Of Sequential And Integrated Data Fusion For Estimating Hydrologic Properties During A Synthetic Gpr Monitored Infiltration Event, Guy Sicilia Jr

All Theses

Constraining parameters that govern variably saturated flow is important for applications ranging from quantifying water availability for ecosystems to constraining recharge rates and contaminant fluxes to groundwater. In this study I explore the effectiveness of sequential versus integrated data fusion for estimating unsaturated flow parameters using ground penetrating radar (GPR) data. In Sequential Data Fusion (SDF), geophysical imaging is used to create a map of the geophysical properties of the subsurface. These properties are then transformed to hydrologic properties that can be used to constrain an independent hydrologic inverse problem. In contrast, Integrated Data Fusion (IDF) uses the geophysical data …

Online Travel Information Search Behaviors: An Information Foraging Perspective, Evan Jordan

All Theses

Information search has been a topic of research for a multitude of studies across
several fields, including travel and tourism. However, information search on the internet,
especially in travel and tourism, has rarely been examined. As a result, this research was
undertaken to explore travel information search behaviors on the Internet.
This thesis uses information foraging theory (Pirolli & Card, 1999) as a basis to
examine online travel information search behaviors. In addition, other established
measures of online information search (Hodkinson, Kiel, & McColl-Kennedy, 2000)
were used to supplement findings based upon information foraging theory. Groups of
students from two …

Scale-Up And Characterization Of An Enrichment Culture For Bioaugmentation Of The P-Area Chlorinated Ethene Plume At The Savannah River Site, Ashley Eaddy Jul 2008

Scale-Up And Characterization Of An Enrichment Culture For Bioaugmentation Of The P-Area Chlorinated Ethene Plume At The Savannah River Site, Ashley Eaddy

All Theses

Bioaugmentation has become an increasingly popular remediation strategy for groundwater sites contaminated with chlorinated solvents. When biostimulation is not an option due to the lack of necessary microorganisms required for dechlorination of the contaminants, bioaugmentation is an attractive option for remediation. The P-Area groundwater plumes at the Savannah River Site (SRS) are just such a case. The P-Area site is contaminated with tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), and cis-dichloroethene (cDCE), and no dechlorination past cDCE is occurring. A similar site, the C-Area site, is near one of the P-Area site's source zones but displays complete reduction of TCE to ethene. …

The Application Of Bacteriophage For The Elimination Of Pathogenic Bacteria In Compost, Spencer Heringa Jul 2008

The Application Of Bacteriophage For The Elimination Of Pathogenic Bacteria In Compost, Spencer Heringa

All Theses

The demand for organically grown produce is rapidly rising in the United States, resulting in a resurgence of natural fertilizers, such as animal waste, being used in agriculture. Currently, there are guidelines set by the USDA for the proper processing of fecal materials through composting; however food-borne illnesses associated with fresh-produce have become more and more common. Research is being conducted toward developing more effective treatments of fecal waste to reduce the survival of harmful bacteria. One possible form of treatment is through the use of bacteriophages that are able to 'seek and destroy' specific bacteria. The objectives of this …

Investigation Of A Photosynthetically Aerated Cathode In A Mfc, Derek Little Jul 2008

Investigation Of A Photosynthetically Aerated Cathode In A Mfc, Derek Little

All Theses

A microbial fuel cell (MFC) creates an environment that facilitates the conversion of electron donor compounds into electrical current through the oxidizing powers of microbial growth. Within the anode of a MFC bacteria grow oxidizing organic compounds while in the cathode oxygen is reduced. The goal of a MFC is to achieve respiration under anaerobic conditions having electrodes serve as intermediate electron acceptor for bacteria in the anode and shuttle electrons through a circuit to the cathode reducing a terminal electron acceptor.
Waste from the biological production of hydrogen from agricultural peach was explored for use within the anode of …

Perceiving Aperture Widths During Teleoperation, Suzanne Butler Jul 2008

Perceiving Aperture Widths During Teleoperation, Suzanne Butler

All Theses

When teleoperating robots it is often difficult for operators to perceive aspects of remote environments within which they are working (Tittle, Roesler, & Woods, 2002). It is difficult to perceive the sizes of objects in remote environments and to determine if the robot can pass through apertures of various sizes (Casper & Murphy, 2003; Murphy 2004). The present experiment investigated whether remote perception could be improved by providing optic flow during robot movement or by positioning an on-board camera so that the forward portion the robot is in the camera's view. Participants judges the sizes of remote apertures viewed through …

Sequencing, Sub-Cloning, Expression And Purification Of 2-Hydroxychromene-2-Carboxylate Isomerase From Sphingomonas Paucimobilis Epa505, Aaron Brown Jul 2008

Sequencing, Sub-Cloning, Expression And Purification Of 2-Hydroxychromene-2-Carboxylate Isomerase From Sphingomonas Paucimobilis Epa505, Aaron Brown

All Theses

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous toxic pollutants that are slow to degrade naturally and costly to remediate artificially. Several species of bacteria have been shown to degrade PAHs, including Sphingomonas paucimobilis EPA505. The aerobic bacterial catabolism of the PAH naphthalene has been studied in several PAH metabolizing bacteria but never in EPA505. This study addresses this deficiency by identifying and characterizing one of the genes for naphthalene metabolism--nahD. NahD codes for the enzyme 2-hydroxychromene-2-carboxylate (HCCA) isomerase, which is the fourth of six enzymes in the upper catabolic pathway of naphthalene.
In this study, the gene nahD is identified …

Dendrimer Supramolecular Assembly For Gene Delivery, Karthikeyan Pasupathy Jul 2008

Dendrimer Supramolecular Assembly For Gene Delivery, Karthikeyan Pasupathy

All Theses

Dendrimers have found many applications in the fields of polymer science, biophysics, nanomedicine and the petroleum industry. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) was studied as a model dendrimer and squalane as a model hydrocarbon. The interaction between PAMAM and squalane is pH dependent. Specifically, at low or neutral pH the squalane is found on the periphery of the PAMAM while at high pH the hydrocarbon is entrapped inside the PAMAM molecules.

Single-molecule fluorescence revealed that the interaction between PAMAM and squalane is reversible. At a pH value of 8, the time constants for the approaching, binding and dissociation of single PAMAM to squalane …

Remchlor Model Of Tritium Transport At The Made Site, Shelly Tyre Jul 2008

Remchlor Model Of Tritium Transport At The Made Site, Shelly Tyre

All Theses

Groundwater transport models are commonly used at sites with groundwater contamination. Models are used to study the extent of the contamination and the possible risks it poses. Contaminant transport models use properties of the aquifer and the solute to simulate how the solute moves through the aquifer. Screening level models are often used as a first modeling approach at sites to get an idea of the general trends of contaminant transport. They offer an efficient approach to modeling, usually requiring fewer input parameters than other models.
This study uses a screening level model to describe tritium transport for the second …

Water Levels Effects On Overall Customer Satisfaction:, Crayton Pruitt Jul 2008

Water Levels Effects On Overall Customer Satisfaction:, Crayton Pruitt

All Theses

Abstract The combination of hydroelectric power generation and the amount of precipitation results in fluctuating water levels on the United States Army Corps of Engineers: Lake Hartwell. Beginning in 2002 and continuing to the end of survey year 2004, water levels ranged from approximately ten feet below full pool to within half a foot under full pool. These fluctuations created difficulty for adjacent landowners to access sufficient water depths for recreational needs. The problems were magnified by a common perception that neighboring lakes', Lake Keowee and Lake Thurmond, water levels had not dropped as dramatically. This study examined the effects …

The Electrical Characterization Of Tantalum Capacitors As Mis Devices, Brian Holman Jun 2008

The Electrical Characterization Of Tantalum Capacitors As Mis Devices, Brian Holman

All Theses

Electrical characteristics of a new class of tantalum capacitor are presented. Specifically, this type of tantalum capacitor is manufactured by KEMET Electronics Corporation and utilizes Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiolphene) (PEDOT) as the cathode material. There are two capacitor varieties based on the polymerization method used for the PEDOT. One uses In-Situ polymerization, and the other uses Pre-Polymerization. Existing polymer Ta capacitors use In-Situ polymerization while Pre-Polymerization is a new technique of cathode application. We investigated both types of devices to determine what, if any, performance benefits were gained by using Pre-Poly.
In a basic form Ta capacitors consist of a Ta anode, Ta2O5 …

Protein Interactions With Mixed Poly(Ethylene Glycol)/Polyacrylic Acid Brushes, Zhenqing Li Jun 2008

Protein Interactions With Mixed Poly(Ethylene Glycol)/Polyacrylic Acid Brushes, Zhenqing Li

All Theses

Tethered polymer chains that are grafted to a solid substrate by one chain end (polymer brushes) may be distinguished from other anchored polymer layers by the relatively high grafting densities gained. Potential uses of polymer brushes for interfacial modification to regulate interactions between proteins and substrates, such as drug delivery and protein separation, are widely recognized. Therefore, it is important to investigate interactions between proteins and surfaces modified with a polymer brush.
In this study, the 'grafting-to' method has been used to graft mixed poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) brushes onto poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA)-modified silicon wafers/glass slides to …

Racial Motivations For French Collaboration During The Second World War: Uncovering The Memory Through Film And Memoirs, Daniela Greene May 2008

Racial Motivations For French Collaboration During The Second World War: Uncovering The Memory Through Film And Memoirs, Daniela Greene

All Theses

Abstract
After France was defeated by the Germans in June 1940, several politicians of the Third Republic formed a new government under Marshal Philippe PŽtain in Vichy. The men in the new regime immediately began to make social and political changes which, in their mind, were long overdue. They believed that they could negotiate with the occupation officials in the North and maintain France's sovereignty, at least in the 'free' Southern zone. They also believed, as did a large part of the French people, that the inadequacies of the republican system had lost France the war. It had certainly been …

Channeled Polymer Fibers As Stationary/Support Phases For Chemical Separation By Liquid Chromatography And For Waste Stream Clean-Up, Kenneth R. Marcus May 2008

Channeled Polymer Fibers As Stationary/Support Phases For Chemical Separation By Liquid Chromatography And For Waste Stream Clean-Up, Kenneth R. Marcus

Clemson Patents

Polymer fibers having a novel cross-sectional geometry are used as stationary phase materials for liquid chromatography separations. Fibers of 20 to 50 micrometer diameters have surface-channel structures extending their entire lengths. Bundles of fibers having this novel cross-sectional geometry are packed in columns. Different polymer compositions permit the "chemical tuning" of the separation process. Channeled fibers composed of polystyrene and polypropylene have been used to separate mixtures of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Pb-containing compounds and fatty acids. Use of channeled fibers allows a wide range of liquid flow rates with very low backing pressures. Applications in HPLC, cap-LC, prep-scale separations, analytical …
