Colleges’ And Universities’ Use Of Twitter: A Content Analysis, Darren Linvill, Sara E. Mcgee, Laura K. Hicks
Colleges’ And Universities’ Use Of Twitter: A Content Analysis, Darren Linvill, Sara E. Mcgee, Laura K. Hicks
Publications
This study explored how colleges and universities are employing Twitter, a popular micro-blogging tool. Using Kent and Taylor's principles of dialogic communication, a content analysis was performed on individual tweets (n = 1130) from 113 colleges and universities. Tweets were coded for whether or not they met each principle of dialogical communication and why. It was found that institutions are not employing Twitter in a dialogic way and they are, instead, employing it primarily as an institutional news feed to a general audience. The implications of this finding are discussed.

A Study Of Interpreting Accreditation Testing Formatsin Australia, Sedat Mulayim
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Advanced and affordable video conferencing technology has led to an increase in remote interpreting services via video, which has become a significant alternative to telephone and face-to-face interpreting. In keeping with this development, training providers are now incorporating video conference interpreting in their training. Video and audio resources are also increasingly being used as e-learning resources in online learning tools such as Blackboard and other university student learning portals. This has implications for the testing of interpreting skills, and the RMIT University Translating and Interpreting Program in Melbourne, Australia has started phasing in video assessment in examination and accreditation tests. …
Besocratic: An Intelligent Tutoring System For The Recognition, Evaluation, And Analysis Of Free-Form Student Input, Samuel Bryfczynski
Besocratic: An Intelligent Tutoring System For The Recognition, Evaluation, And Analysis Of Free-Form Student Input, Samuel Bryfczynski
All Dissertations
This dissertation describes a novel intelligent tutoring system, BeSocratic, which aims to help fill the gap between simple multiple-choice systems and free-response systems. BeSocratic focuses on targeting questions that are free-form in nature yet defined to the point which allows for automatic evaluation and analysis. The system includes a set of modules which provide instructors with tools to assess student performance. Beyond text boxes and multiple-choice questions, BeSocratic contains several modules that recognize, evaluate, provide feedback, and analyze student-drawn structures, including Euclidean graphs, chemistry molecules, computer science graphs, and simple drawings. Our system uses a visual, rule-based authoring system which …

The Effect Of Increasing Salinity And Forest Mortality On Soil Nitrogen And Phosphorus Mineralization In Tidal Freshwater Forested Wetlands, William Conner, Gregory Noe, B Graeme Lockaby, Ken Krauss
The Effect Of Increasing Salinity And Forest Mortality On Soil Nitrogen And Phosphorus Mineralization In Tidal Freshwater Forested Wetlands, William Conner, Gregory Noe, B Graeme Lockaby, Ken Krauss

Tidal freshwater wetlands are sensitive to sea level rise and increased salinity, although little information is known about the impact of salinification on nutrient biogeochemistry in tidal freshwater forested wetlands. We quantified soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) mineralization using seasonal in situincubations of modified resin cores along spatial gradients of chronic salinification (from continuously freshwater tidal forest to salt impacted tidal forest to oligohaline marsh) and in hummocks and hollows of the continuously freshwater tidal forest along the blackwater Waccamaw River and alluvial Savannah River. Salinification increased rates of net N and P mineralization fluxes and turnover in tidal …

The recent challenges for higher education call for research that can offer a comprehensive understanding about the performance and efficiency of higher education institutions in their three primary missions: research, education, and service. In other for this to happen, it is necessary for researchers to have access to a multitude of data sources. However, due to the nature of their academic training, many higher education practitioners do not have access to expertise in working with different data sources. In this work, we describe a design and implementation for an infrastructure that will bring together the tools and the data to provide …

Enhancing College And Career Readiness Programs For Underserved Adolescents, Kevin Gee, Carolynne Beno, Lauren Lindstrom, John Lind
Enhancing College And Career Readiness Programs For Underserved Adolescents, Kevin Gee, Carolynne Beno, Lauren Lindstrom, John Lind
Journal of Youth Development
Supporting college and career readiness among youth who encounter significant academic and life challenges requires innovative strategies to help them envision their futures, leverage their strengths and develop dispositions that promote positive trajectories. For youth development professionals who develop and implement novel programmatic approaches to support the college and career readiness of underserved youth, it is critical to acquire a deeper evidence-based understanding of factors shaping positive career and college pathways as well as to incorporate stakeholder viewpoints in their program design and delivery. In this article, we share key insights from our program development process that can inform the …

Programming Ideas For Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Leslie Forstadt, Sarah Yuan, Kerri Ashurst, Melissa Scheer
Journal of Youth Development
This article provides an overview of some of the demographics of youth experiencing homelessness and examples of how Cooperative Extension is working with this population around the country. A discussion of the needs of this population is provided, along with strategies for how Extension can connect with current efforts to reach youth experiencing homelessness to build resilience. Data are summarized from a webinar for Extension professionals. Education in this area is worthwhile to youth development professionals who may be interested in designing new programs, expanding current programs, finding new program partnerships, and using programs to support youth experiencing homelessness. Integrated Traffic And Communication Performance Evaluation Of An Intelligent Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (Vii) System For Online Travel Time Prediction, Yongchang Ma, Mashrur Chowdhury, Adel Sadek, Mansoureh Jeihani

This paper presents a framework for online highway travel time prediction using traffic measurements that are likely to be available from Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) systems, in which vehicle and infrastructure devices communicate to improve mobility and safety. In the proposed intelligent VII system, two artificial intelligence (AI) paradigms, namely Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Support Vector Regression (SVR), are used to determine future travel time based on such information as current travel time, VII-enabled vehicles’ flow and density. The development and performance evaluation of the VII-ANN and VII-SVR frameworks, in both of the traffic and communications domains, were conducted, …
