8th Annual Focus On Creative Inquiry Poster Forum Program, Clemson University
Focus on Creative Inquiry
The poster forum today displays a few of the more than 400 projects initiated by Clemson University Creative Inquiry teams.
What is Creative Inquiry? It is small-group learning for all students. It is the imaginative combination of engaged learning and undergraduate research. Ultimately, it is the creation of an Ah-ha! Moment — and it is unique to Clemson University.
Creative Inquiry establishes small teams of undergraduate students that work with faculty mentors to take on problems that spring from their own curiosity, from a professor’s challenge, or from the pressing needs of the world around them. Students take ownership of …

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the Twitter's role in the formation of team allegiance through the revised Psychological Continuum Model (PCM) by creating James and Funk (2006). Although collegiate sports programs are using social media to communicate with their fans, little research about how social media impacts the formation of team allegiance has been done. The primary focus will be to analyze how individuals interact with a sports team via Twitter and how those interactions form allegiance. Twitter, a new communication technology platform, is, at present, one of the most popular sites and communication technologies among both …

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Previous research on electronic textbook has produced mixed results, partly because of incomplete methodologies. Too many studies relied solely on qualitative data or imprecise learning outcome measurements. This research study was interested in what type of textbook (print, electronic, or web) helped students perform better on procedural and conceptual tasks. Forty-one first-year composition students at Clemson University were recruited to participate in a hybrid of quasi-experiment and think-aloud protocol. A quasi-experiment was used to gather quantitative data about how the different textbooks influenced performance, and a think-aloud was used to gather qualitative data about the participants\' opinions and attitudes. The …

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Welcome to the 1st Annual Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)! This year’s GRADS event is a first for Clemson University. It is the first graduate student led, university wide research symposium in Clemson’s history. This year’s event will showcase the research of over 100 graduate students from each of the colleges in the University’s Graduate School. The event serves as an opportunity for Clemson’s graduate students to exhibit their work as well as an
opportunity for our graduate community to learn what their peers in other fields are researching, creating and producing. The GRADS Event Committee would like to …

In 2006, following a 30-year trend among the US states to remove the property tax from the revenue for public schools, the South Carolina General Assembly enacted Act 388 which replaced the property tax with a one-cent sales tax. The law decreased the budget capacity of school districts thus impacting educational equity and adequacy. This paper describes key policy makers’ and stakeholders’ interpretations of the pressure for property tax relief and highlight the importance of policy coherence in education finance, taxation, and accountability.

Journal of Youth Development
The manner that young people and adults are communicating with each other is rapidly changing in society that is, in part, driven by the latest technology. As a youth-driven program, we must engage in new strategies and methods by which we communicate with youth members, volunteers, families, and the community at large. Social and mobile media are a growing and popular venue for much of our target audience and youth development practitioners must learn how to leverage these networks to create positive youth development in online environments. If we ignore and don’t engage in the opportunity to be connected to …

This review outlines the recent progress made in developing more accurate and efficient solutions to model electrostatics in systems comprised of bio-macromolecules and nano-objects, the last one referring to objects that do not have biological function themselves but nowadays are frequently used in biophysical and medical approaches in conjunction with bio-macromolecules. The problem of modeling macromolecular electrostatics is reviewed from two different angles: as a mathematical task provided the specific definition of the system to be modeled and as a physical problem aiming to better capture the phenomena occurring in the real experiments. In addition, specific attention is paid to …

A Systematic Revision Of Operclipygus Marseul (Coleoptera, Histeridae, Exosternini), Michael S. Caterino, Alexey K. Tishechkin

We revise the large Neotropical genus Operclipygus Marseul, in the histerid tribe Exosternini (Histeridae: Histerinae). We synonymize 3 species, move 14 species from other genera, sink the genus Tribalister Horn into Operclipygus, and describe 138 species as new, bringing the total to 177 species of Operclipygus. Keys are provided for the identification of all species, and the majority of the species are illustrated by habitus and male genitalia illustrations. The species are diverse throughout tropical South and Central America, with only a few species extending into the temperate parts of North America. The majority of species can be recognized by …
