On The Modeling Of Polar Component Of Solvation Energy Using Smooth Gaussian-Based Dielectric Function, Lin Li, Chuan Li, Emil Alexov May 2014

On The Modeling Of Polar Component Of Solvation Energy Using Smooth Gaussian-Based Dielectric Function, Lin Li, Chuan Li, Emil Alexov

Publications

Traditional implicit methods for modeling electrostatics in biomolecules use a two-dielectric approach: a biomolecule is assigned low dielectric constant while the water phase is considered as a high dielectric constant medium. However, such an approach treats the biomolecule-water interface as a sharp dielectric border between two homogeneous dielectric media and does not account for inhomogeneous dielectric properties of the macromolecule as well. Recently we reported a new development, a smooth Gaussian-based dielectric function which treats the entire system, the solute and the water phase, as inhomogeneous dielectric medium (J Chem Theory Comput. 2013 Apr 9; 9(4): 2126-2136.). Here we examine …

The Effects Of Applied Hydrostatic Pressure On Osteogenic Differentiation Of Mouse Mesenchymal Stem Cells In An In Vitro 3d Culture, Brittany Mcgowan May 2014

The Effects Of Applied Hydrostatic Pressure On Osteogenic Differentiation Of Mouse Mesenchymal Stem Cells In An In Vitro 3d Culture, Brittany Mcgowan

All Dissertations

Changes in the mechanical loading on the skeleton have been shown to influence bone density. In bone disorders, such as disuse osteoporosis, the reduction of loading on bone leads to reduced bone mineral density and thus increased risk of fracture. Previous studies have suggested this may be caused by a change in the mechanical environment, specifically hydrostatic pressures, of the bone cells, resulting in a change in cellular activity. However, the pressure parameters and mechanisms involved in the promotion/suppression of osteogenesis in 3D in vitro culture of bone cells are not well understood. This doctoral thesis sought to investigate the …

Characterizing The Effect Of Suspended Carbon Nanotubes On The Bioavailablility Of Adsorbed Fluoranthene To P. Promelas, Erica N. Linard

All Theses

The introduction of carbon nanomaterials into the environment has increased exponentially in the last decade, causing environmental as well as health concerns. One concern is the interaction that such nanomaterials have with the biota in the aquatic ecosystem and the direct and indirect toxic effects that may result. Previous research has documented a positive influence of natural organic matter (NOM) on the stability of carbon nanotube (CNTs) suspensions in surface waters. Further, research has quantified the ability of these carbon nanomaterials to adsorb aquatic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Though both CNTs and PAHs can co-occur in wastewater …

ABSTRACT High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), first used in the 1960's, is a rapidly evolving analytical technique, widely employed for identification, separation, and purification in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The development of the stationary phases has played an important role in improving this technique. Each stationary phase will have its own disadvantages. Polysaccharide-based stationary phases such as cross-linked dextran cannot tolerate high pressures and linear velocities; silica stationary phases are rigid enough but slow mass transfer in the pores on the surface causes another problem; with the introduction of non-porous and small bead packing materials, the low surface area and …

Design And Implementation Of A Real-Time Adaptive Oxygen Transfer Rate Estimator, Li Wang May 2014

Design And Implementation Of A Real-Time Adaptive Oxygen Transfer Rate Estimator, Li Wang

All Theses

Oxygen transfer rate (OTR) is the most signicant signal for aerobic bioprocess control, since most microbic metabolic activity relies on oxygen consumption. However, accurate estimation of OTR is challenging due to the difficulty of determining uncertain oxygen transfer parameters and system dynamics. This paper presents an adaptive estimator, which incorporates exhaust gas, stir speed and dissolved oxygen measurements, to predict the real-time OTR. The design of this estimator takes into account the headspace dilution effect, off-gas sensor dynamics and uncertain oxygen transfer parameters. Accurate and real-time OTR signal is derived by combining the low latency property of stir speed and …

Analysis Of Market Reactions To Tarp Loans Repayment Evidence From Banks, Le You

All Theses

This research presented here mainly focuses on analyzing investors' reactions toward banks' announcement of TARP repayment. Considering huge difference among sample banks, I split the result of abnormal return into subgroups based on banks size and financial performance. And then I conduct comparisons of each group to reveal the possible effects on market reactions casted by size and financial performance. To confirm my results on market reactions to TARP repayment, I perform two regression analyses on both full sample and subsample with cumulative abnormal return (CAR) as dependent variable and controlled variables as independent variables. Data over the period from …

White Noise And Newer Media: The Prophetic Impact Of Jack's Avatars, Caleb Milligan May 2014

White Noise And Newer Media: The Prophetic Impact Of Jack's Avatars, Caleb Milligan

All Theses

In this paper, I analyze Don DeLillo's White Noise through a contemporary techno-literate approach that utilizes Internet and game studies to better understand its protagonist, Jack Gladney, and to reevaluate the novel's critical legacy. Jack is not a modernist living in a postmodern world, as critics like Tom LeClair, John Duvall, and Leonard Wilcox have claimed for the many years since the publication of this novel. Lacking the authentic consistency for such a title, he is instead a postmodern human simulacrum sampling different character types to avoid his lack of discernable self. In each role he plays, however, he is …

The City of Charleston is known colloquially as 'The Holy City,' and many of its holy structures display stained glass windows. Long admired for their aesthetic qualities, these stained glass windows are under-examined examples of the city's material culture. A careful reading of these windows has uncovered information about the artifacts themselves and the cultural, religious, and geographic identities of the societies who created and commissioned these windows. This thesis examines how ethnography, religion, and geography influenced the artistic styles and iconography of the stained glass windows of Charleston's ecclesiastical structures and mausoleums. The stained glass windows of Peninsular Charleston …

Adsorption Of Synthetic Organic Chemicals: A Comparison Of Superfine Powdered Activated Carbon With Powdered Activated Carbon, Semra Bakkaloglu May 2014

Adsorption Of Synthetic Organic Chemicals: A Comparison Of Superfine Powdered Activated Carbon With Powdered Activated Carbon, Semra Bakkaloglu

All Theses

In literature, manufacturer-supplied powdered activated carbon has been ground to produce submicron particles with mean diameter lower than 1µm for use as an adsorbent during water treatment. Superfine powdered activated carbon (SPAC) can be used for removal of natural organic matter as well as synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) from water. It has been suggested that SPAC has higher adsorption capacity than powdered activated carbon (PAC) due to larger external surface area and mesopore volume. Another advantage of SPAC over PAC is the faster uptake rate for both NOM and SOC during adsorption owing to small particle size. Therefore, understanding SPAC …

The Leconte Lodge: A Lens For The Evolution And Development Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Lindsay D. Lanois

All Theses

Officially established in 1934, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park originated as part of a widespread cultural trend towards outdoor recreation, national tourism, and the federal government's assumption of responsibility for land conservation. However, the area of Tennessee and North Carolina selected by the federal government for the national park was not a purely unsettled landscape. Not only did the land serve as home to approximately ten permanent agricultural communities, but it also featured several hotels and lodges inspired by the burgeoning twentieth-century tourism industry. Beginning as a rudimentary hiking cabin constructed in 1925 and evolving throughout the 1930s, the …
