Web-Based Nutrition Education Intervention For African American Women Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Joyce Senior Angulo Dec 2015

Web-Based Nutrition Education Intervention For African American Women Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Joyce Senior Angulo

All Dissertations

African American women have been disproportionately impacted for decades by the obesity epidemic, which frequently leads to severe chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension. This increase in chronic diseases amongst African American women is the motivation for the design of a culturally tailored nutrition education (NE) program that combines a strong theoretical base with the use of technology such as the Internet, since its usage within the college aged African American community has rapidly increased. Little is known about the variables that motivate behavior change in regards to eating and physical activity habits among college aged African …

Electrochemical Enhancement Of Butanol Production And Xylose Consumption In Pure And Mixed Culture Fermentations, Jovan Popovic Dec 2015

Electrochemical Enhancement Of Butanol Production And Xylose Consumption In Pure And Mixed Culture Fermentations, Jovan Popovic

All Dissertations

The volatility of foreign and domestic petroleum markets has prompted initiatives for the development of alternative liquid energy carriers which have the capacity to accommodate our current transportation infrastructure. Butanol, which has an energy density similar to that of gasoline and can be produced through the fermentation of carbohydrates by solventogenic Clostridia, has been investigated as a supplement or direct replacement to gasoline. However, most butanol fermentations rely on glucose as a feedstock which is in direct competition with our food supply, and this requires the exploration of alternative fermentable substrates. This study investigates the use of electrochemical fermentation modifications …

Effects Of Growth Factor Supplementation And Environmental Conditions On Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Differentiation Towards Urothelial Lineage, James Turner Dec 2015

Effects Of Growth Factor Supplementation And Environmental Conditions On Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Differentiation Towards Urothelial Lineage, James Turner

All Dissertations

In recent years, tissue engineering of the bladder has undergone many technological advances. Autologous urothelial cells have been used in animal models and have shown increased performance for ureteral reconstruction compared to unseeded grafts. However, since patients may lack a reliable source of native urothelial cells due to the nature of their specific bladder disease, autologous cells are not an ideal source clinically, and an alternate cell source must be explored. Adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) are an attractive cell source for such regenerative medicine applications as they have been extensively studied for their multipotential differentiation, immunosuppressive properties, ease of …

Anisotropic Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Nanoparticles: Synthesis And Characterization, Chunliang Lu Dec 2015

Anisotropic Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Nanoparticles: Synthesis And Characterization, Chunliang Lu

All Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the design, synthesis and characterization of stimuli-responsive anisotropic nanoparticles with various morphologies. Size- and shape-tunable Janus nanoparticles consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate) (p(MMA/nBA)), poly(pentafluorostyrene/nBA) (p(PFS/nBA) and poly(2-(N,N′-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate/nBA) (p(DMAEMA/nBA)) phases were synthesized via consecutive seeded emulsion polymerization. These Janus nanoparticles are capable of changing size and morphology in response of temperature and/or pH changes, which may have potential applications as solid surfactants. Gibbous and inverse-gibbous nanoparticles were synthesized viacopolymerization of fluorinated monomers in the presence of pMMA or polystyrene (pSt) seed particles. The morphology of the gibbous nanoparticles can be controlled by polymerization conditions. Incorporation …

An Efficient Holistic Data Distribution And Storage Solution For Online Social Networks, Guoxin Liu

All Dissertations

In the past few years, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have dramatically spread over the world. Facebook [4], one of the largest worldwide OSNs, has 1.35 billion users, 82.2% of whom are outside the US [36]. The browsing and posting interactions (text content) between OSN users lead to user data reads (visits) and writes (updates) in OSN datacenters, and Facebook now serves a billion reads and tens of millions of writes per second [37]. Besides that, Facebook has become one of the top Internet traffic sources [36] by sharing tremendous number of large multimedia files including photos and videos. The servers …

Leisure, Obesity And Weight Loss: An Exploration Of Leisure, The Public Health Ecological Model Of Obesity And Identity Theory, Weber Player Dec 2015

Leisure, Obesity And Weight Loss: An Exploration Of Leisure, The Public Health Ecological Model Of Obesity And Identity Theory, Weber Player

All Dissertations

Obesity is a global health crisis with complex causal relationships. From the mid 1990s to 2010, obesity related research in the clinical and social sciences has exploded. This expansion has resulted in a proliferation of obesity-related articles published in top-tier journals and the creation of new journals solely devoted to obesity research. In contrast within leisure scholarship, a review of leisure journals reveals that published research on the relationship of leisure, obesity and weight loss is minimal. However, numerous leisure scholarship/theory principles are relevant to obesity prevention and treatment. Similarly, public health officials have developed numerous systems-oriented multilevel framework models …

Exploring Elementary Teachers’ Conceptions Of Global Citizenship Through Cross-Cultural Interaction, Sheliah Durham Dec 2015

Exploring Elementary Teachers’ Conceptions Of Global Citizenship Through Cross-Cultural Interaction, Sheliah Durham

All Dissertations

The challenge we face as educators is how to best prepare our students for an increasingly complex and interconnected world. A growing interest in global citizenship education is evidenced by its inclusion in academia related to curriculum development and teacher preparation (Banks, 2008; Merryfield, 2000; 2001; 2003; 2009; Myers, 2006; Nussbaum, 2002). I, following other scholars, argue that global citizenship education provides an opportunity to develop tolerances, appreciation for differences, and global awareness, as well as providing a format to address current and future global issues (Ikeda, D. 2005; Noddings, 2005a; Merryfield 2000; 2007; 2009). Yet, a review of the …

Multi-Factor Models To Resolve Growth Responses In Vitro And During Subsequent Greenhouse Growth For Turmeric (Curcuma Longa L.), Rabia El-Hawaz

All Dissertations

Plant media has been developed over the last six decades, yet, there has not been medium optimized for microplant greenhouse growth, which may be important for producing chemical compounds and preparing transplants for success in the field. A series of multi-factor optimization experiments were conducted on turmeric (Curcuma longa L., genotype L 35-1) to identify the effects of mineral nutrition and plant density in vitro on laboratory and greenhouse production. The first experiment optimized PO43-, Ca2+, Mg2+, and KNO3 for five-months growth in bioreactors with periodic supplementation of sucrose solution +/- nutrients. Phosphorus (6.25 mM) increased sucrose supplement and rhizome …

Creating Arguments Using A Multiliteracies Approach: A Formative Experiment, Emily Howell Dec 2015

Creating Arguments Using A Multiliteracies Approach: A Formative Experiment, Emily Howell

All Dissertations

This dissertation study addresses the New London Group’s (1996) concern that technology and globalization require an expanded concept of literacy that focuses upon the multimodal nature of communication. This study combined a formative experiment with multiple-case-study methods to understand the pedagogical implications of implementing an intervention based upon the multiliteracies perspective (New London Group, 1996), a perspective that remains theoretical in application. This study sought to implement this perspective in a ninth- and a tenth-grade English class in a rural school district and develop assertions that further the localized, pedagogical understanding and application of the present study’s intervention (Gravemeijer & …

Estimating The Effect Of Extended And Emergency Unemployment Benefits On The Long-Term Unemployed, James Jones Dec 2015

Estimating The Effect Of Extended And Emergency Unemployment Benefits On The Long-Term Unemployed, James Jones

All Dissertations

Unemployment insurance is designed to help workers smooth consumption in the event of a negative employment shock. These benefits are traditionally funded and administrated by the individual states and territories of the United States. The depth and severity of the “Great Recession” that started in December of 2007 and ended in June of 2009 was such that, Congress was compelled on multiple occasions to extend those benefits. Legislation during this period extended the duration of unemployment benefits to the longest period in history, as unemployed individuals in many states could receive up to 99 weeks of unemployment compensation. The policy …

Formalizing Community Interpreting Standards: A Cross-National Comparison Of Testing Systems, Certification Conventions And Recent Iso Guidelines, Jim Hlavac

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Community interpreting has become a global phenomenon, and the need for standard assurances of practice is being met by credentialing systems that certify a community interpreter through testing and/or training. This paper examines credentialing systems in Australia, Canada, Norway and the UK and poses the questions of whether the spread and development of testing systems has led to a widening of the skills now required for community interpreting, and whether testing alone is a means for the demonstration of all of these skills. Some attributes of credential candidates are pretest admission prerequisites. Testing alone is the common pathway for community …

I Was Just Thinking-, Amber Eckersley Nov 2015

I Was Just Thinking-, Amber Eckersley

Student Projects

One of the major challenges of college and budding adulthood is learning about yourself. It is a difficult task that is often made more confusing through the Internet and social media platforms that allow us to form multiple conceptions of self. This stack addresses that idea by suggesting that people can consciously decide who or what version of themselves they want to be at any time.

Location

On the stairwell landing between the 5th and 4th floor. The stack needs to be placed on a pedestal in the center of the landing.

This location catches people in an area of …
