A Sustainable Approach For Tungsten Carbide Synthesis Using Renewable Biopolymers, Monsur Islam, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte
A Sustainable Approach For Tungsten Carbide Synthesis Using Renewable Biopolymers, Monsur Islam, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte
Publications
Here we present a sustainable, environment-friendly and energy-efficient approach for synthesis of porous tungsten carbide (WC). A biopolymer-metal oxide composite featuring iota-carrageenan, chitin and tungsten trioxide (WO3) was used as the precursor material. The reaction mechanism for the synthesis of WC was estimated using the results from X-ray diffraction characterization (XRD). A synthesis temperature of 1300 °C and dwell time of 3 h were found to be the optimum process parameters to obtain WC>98% pure. The grain size, porosity and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of the synthesized WC were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission …

Homologous recombination (HR) is a DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair pathway that utilizes a homologous template to fully repair the damaged DNA. HR is critical to maintain genome stability and to ensure genetic diversity during meiosis. A specialized class of enzymes known as recombinases facilitate the exchange of genetic information between sister chromatids or homologous chromosomes with the help of numerous protein accessory factors. The majority of the HR machinery is highly conserved among eukaryotes. In many protozoan parasites, HR is an essential DSB repair pathway that allows these organisms to adapt to environmental conditions and evade host immune systems …

We introduce the lattice-Boltzmann code LB3D, version 7.1. Building on a parallel program and supporting tools which have enabled research utilising high performance computing resources for nearly two decades, LB3D version 7 provides a subset of the research code functionality as an open source project. Here, we describe the theoretical basis of the algorithm as well as computational aspects of the implementation. The software package is validated against simulations of meso-phases resulting from self-assembly in ternary fluid mixtures comprising immiscible and amphiphilic components such as water–oil–surfactant systems. The impact of the surfactant species on the dynamics of spinodal decomposition are …

Ball-milling utilizes mechanical stress to modify properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) including size, capping, and functionalization. Ball-milling, however, may introduce structural defects resulting in altered CNT-biomolecule interactions. Nanomaterial-biomolecule interactions result in the formation of the biocorona (BC), which alters nanomaterial properties, function, and biological responses. The formation of the BC is governed by the nanomaterial physicochemical properties and the physiological environment. Underlying disease states such as cardiovascular disease can alter the biological milieu possibly leading to unique BC identities. In this ex vivo study, we evaluated variations in the formation of the BC on single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) due to physicochemical …

Muslim Work Ethics: Relationships With Religious Orientations And The “Perfect Man” (Ensan-E Kamel) In Managers And Staff In Iran, Nima Ghorbani, P. J. Watson, Maryam Karimpour, Zhuo Job Chen
Publications
Weber’s association of a work ethic with Protestantism has been extended to religions, including Islam, more generally. Managers and staff in a bank and department store in Tehran responded to Muslim religiousness measures along with the multidimensional work ethics profile (MWEP). The MWEP is a 7-factor instrument that records Weber’s interpretation of work ethics. Intrinsic, extrinsic personal, and extrinsic cultural religious orientations predicted a higher work ethic. Two extrinsic cultural religious orientation factors exhibited especially strong connections with MWEP factors. The morality/ethics MWEP factor most consistently predicted Muslim commitments. Integrative self-knowledge and self-control served as empirical markers of an Iranian …

We live in an increasingly mobile society on many levels. Mobile devices, including the smartphone, tablet, and wearables, allow for composing and communicating from anywhere and in new ways, a phenomenon that is especially deserving of attention by composition studies scholars and teachers. Mobile composition processes are impacted by the symmetry of humans and technology as each equally shapes one another. This interplay of mobile devices (including wearables) and humans impacts composition ecologies, processes, and definitions of writing. The role of analog mobile writers also informs our current practices and approaches to a mobile composition as many writers have sought …

Organic waste streams often include bioplastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and food waste. PLA is a plant-derived bioplastic intended to replace petroleum based plastics; it is often used to make utensils and food packaging. Recently, managing food waste and PLA are becoming more and more complex as the amounts disposed continue to increase. PLA and food waste are often comingled during disposal since PLA is touted as being compostable. However, PLA does not degrade at the same rate as food waste in compost facilities. As such, PLA builds up within compost facilities and has to be screened out and …

Aging civic infrastructures in the world has put tremendous pressure in their maintenances because potential failure of the large size civil structures will be catastrophic. Structure health monitoring (SHM) has been proven effective to prevent these failures, and distributed sensing technologies are preferred in SHM as they are effective to provide comprehensive evaluation of the structures. Fiber optic sensors are well developed in the past two decades for distributed sensing, but the lack of robustness and the limited deformability of silica make them not suitable for heavy duty and large deformation applications, which is very common in SHM. To address …

Online educational opportunities have provided students with the flexibility to advance their careers and complete certificate and degree programs. These have also provided educational institutions with increased capacity without the investment of costly brick-and-mortar expansions at campuses. Technology programs, however, have shied away from integrating these advances due to their program outcomes being heavily dependent on the use of tools and hands-on learning. This dissertation explores the use of digital learning lectures on linear measuring instruments accompanied with virtual reality tools in technology programs and its effects on both cognitive and psychomotor learning outcomes compared to current modality - face-to-face …
Multiscale Regional Liquefaction Hazard Assessment And Mapping, Chaofeng Wang
Multiscale Regional Liquefaction Hazard Assessment And Mapping, Chaofeng Wang
All Dissertations
Soil liquefaction is a major cause of damage during earthquakes that could trigger many kinds of ground failures such as ground settlement, lateral spreading, land slides, etc. These ground failures could cause damage to infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, and lifelines resulting in significant economic losses. Therefore it is of significant importance to assess liquefaction hazard. The triggering and consequencing ground failure of liquefaction have been well investigated in the past decades. Nowadays, the dominant approach that correlates the observed field behavior with various in-situ "œindex" tests is able to achieve considerably precise assessments for free field conditions at site-specific …

The track forecast cone developed by the U.S. National Hurricane Center is the one most universally adopted by the general public, the news media, and governmental officials to enhance viewers' understanding of the forecasts and their underlying uncertainties. However, current research has experimentally shown that it has limitations that result in misconceptions of the uncertainty included. Most importantly, the area covered by the cone tends to be misinterpreted as the region affected by the hurricane. In addition, the cone summarizes forecasts for the next three days into a single representation and, thus, makes it difficult for viewers to accurately determine …

Computational Insight Into Structured Ionic Co-Polymers From Molecule To Membrane, Dipak Aryal
All Dissertations
Impact of ionizable blocks on structure and dynamics of structured ionic co-polymers in solutions, melts, and thin films has been studied using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Much of the interest in ionic block co-polymers derives from their inherent tendency to phase segregate into hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains. Ionic domains in ionic block co-polymers serve as physical cross-linkers and form a long-range percolated cluster assembly, which is a crucial component to transport ions or solvents for varieties of applications from clean energy to biotechnology. One of such ionic co-polymers, where ionic blocks facilitate the transport and other non-ionic blocks provide chemical …
