Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Silica Nanoparticles: Sandpack Flooding Experiments In A Low Salinity Environment, Brightin Blanton Dec 2019

Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Silica Nanoparticles: Sandpack Flooding Experiments In A Low Salinity Environment, Brightin Blanton

All Theses

Mobilizing and recovering crude oils from geological strata is crucial for the management and development of petroleum reservoirs. Unlike conventional oil production methods, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes can increase the recovery of most oil products from the reservoir above the secondary recovery baseline. Recent studies have demonstrated that nanoparticles (NPs) have the potential to improve EOR processes. Therefore, understanding how NPs impact the mechanisms that govern the interaction between the fluids interface, the fluid-solid interface, and the mobility of oil in porous media is critical to alter the properties of nanofluids for specific geofluid conditions and increase EOR efficiency. …

Application And Parameterization Of A Semi-Analytical/Numerical Method For Modeling Matrix Diffusion Effects In Groundwater Chemical Transport, Wesley Prater Dec 2019

Application And Parameterization Of A Semi-Analytical/Numerical Method For Modeling Matrix Diffusion Effects In Groundwater Chemical Transport, Wesley Prater

All Theses

The back diffusion of dissolved chemicals from low permeability zones to aquifers can cause contaminant plumes to persist long after remediation (Chapman and Parker, 2005). Because of the complicated nature of some field sites, the effect of back diffusion on plume persistence can sometimes be ambiguous. A novel approach for simulating matrix diffusion effects was previously adapted from geothermal reservoir modeling, which combines numerical and analytical methods by discretizing only the high permeability parts of the aquifer and treating the matrix diffusion flux into the high permeability gridblocks as a concentration dependent source/sink term (Falta and Wang, 2017; Muskus and …

Relationships And Blue Distractions, Denise Ayers Dec 2019

Relationships And Blue Distractions, Denise Ayers

All Theses

This body of work was created in response to observing moments when people in my life succumb to technological distractions during face to face exchanges. My series of drawn portraits meditate on these disconnections where a smart phone often lurks like an uninvited guest between me and another person. The individual’s face and hands are meticulously rendered whereas the atmosphere tends toward abstraction. Naturalistic representation conveys a sense of physical presence and abstraction emphasizes that their mind is elsewhere. Lapses in the connection are tied together through abstraction as a tool to convey this ambiguity. I include fragments of my …

Rheological Effects On Fluid Flow In A Contraction-Expansion And Cavity Microchannel, Purva Popat Jagdale Dec 2019

Rheological Effects On Fluid Flow In A Contraction-Expansion And Cavity Microchannel, Purva Popat Jagdale

All Theses

There are numerous fluids present in our surrounding, with each fluid possessing different properties than the other, for example blood and water. Study of these fluids and their properties is a part of science called fluid rheology. Study of fluid rheology has been conducted for many decades now for better understanding of the fluids, especially non-Newtonian, and the use of microfluidics in this study has increased day by day due to the simplicity of process. Another reason for use of microfluidics in fluid rheology is that the rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids are more noticeable on a micron scale as …

Abject Adaptations, Annamarie E. Williams Dec 2019

Abject Adaptations, Annamarie E. Williams

All Theses

Abject Adaptations is a body of work that contemplates harmful, external forces surrounding women’s bodies and how these bodies adapt in order to possess agency. The work examines these external forces, adaptations and agencies using a variety of conflicting visual cues that border on the grotesque, as well as the beauty and playfulness of highly rendered illustration. Processes include the application of mixed media techniques that layer watercolor, watercolor pencil, colored pencil, graphite pencil and acrylic paint. These techniques provide a colorful and playful dichotomy to the abject forms being rendered. The cartoonish way the forms are rendered make them …

Effects Of A Chronic 0.1 Μm Arsenic Exposure On P19 Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation And Pluripotency, Benjamin Mcmichael Dec 2019

Effects Of A Chronic 0.1 Μm Arsenic Exposure On P19 Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation And Pluripotency, Benjamin Mcmichael

All Theses

Globally, at least 140 million people are exposed to levels of arsenic greater than the World Health Organization recommended standard of 10 ug/L (10 ppb) through their drinking water and food. Epidemiological studies have correlated arsenic exposure during embryonic and fetal development with reduced birth weight, as well as muscular and neurodevelopmental deficits. The goal of the current study was to determine the mechanisms by which a chronic, low-level arsenic exposure impairs cellular development and differentiation. This was achieved by exposing P19 mouse embryonic stem cells (mESC’s) to 0.1 μM arsenic (7.5 ppb), a concentration lower than the current drinking …

Microfabricated Substrate To Achieve In Vivo-Like Cardiomyocyte Morphology And Electrical Propagation In Neonatal Cell Culture, Tiffany Yu Dec 2019

Microfabricated Substrate To Achieve In Vivo-Like Cardiomyocyte Morphology And Electrical Propagation In Neonatal Cell Culture, Tiffany Yu

All Theses

Because of the complexity of the in vivo environment, much physiological and pathological understanding of the human body is obtained through cell culture. To gain clinically relevant knowledge, having a cell culture model that mimics the corresponding in vivo tissue would be advantageous. For example, when studying the mechanical and electrical coupling between cardiac cells, imitating in vivo cellular morphology correlates with improved electrical coupling. This has applications within drug screening; by being able to test for cardiotoxicity with a cell culture model, this reduces the resources needed to screen pharmaceuticals for negative side effects. In conventional cardiomyocyte culture, cells …

Theory Of Extreme Optical Concentration In All-Dielectric Waveguides, Nazmus Sakib Dec 2019

Theory Of Extreme Optical Concentration In All-Dielectric Waveguides, Nazmus Sakib

All Theses

Dielectric waveguides are the solution to the ultra-fast optical communication. In all-dielectric waveguide systems, the boundary condition of Maxwell’s electromagnetic equation can be exploited. Crucially dielectric materials have very low optical losses compared to metal hence the plasmonic structures. Due to very high losses, plasmonic structures are not suitable for practical usage. Achieving small mode dimensions has become an important factor in modern devices since smaller mode dimensions fosters high device density, efficiency, and or performance in a wide array of photonic systems. Keeping these criteria in focus, a transversely structured all-dielectric waveguide has been introduced in this thesis which …

Exploring Yoga As A Leisure-Stress Coping Strategy Among Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Molly Richardson Dec 2019

Exploring Yoga As A Leisure-Stress Coping Strategy Among Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Molly Richardson

All Theses

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at a greater risk for experiencing stress, particularly stress associated with negative interpersonal relations, than individuals without disabilities. Research has found that individuals with IDD often use maladaptive coping strategies to manage stress. The purpose of this study was to explore whether participation in a seven-and-a-half week yoga intervention served as a leisure-stress coping strategy for adults with IDD. Using a multi-method research design, six participants completed pre- and post-Lifestress Inventory assessments, and nine participants completed post-intervention semi-structured interviews focused on yoga and coping. Qualitative results indicated that yoga served as an …

Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio Dec 2019

Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio

All Theses

Tendon injury can occur from activity-induced overuse, complete laceration or aging-related degeneration and these injuries commonly fail to wound heal without clinical treatment. Moreover, activity-induced overuse accounts for approximately half of all sports injuries and has highest occurrence rates in athletes playing football, baseball and basketball. Current non invasive technique to rest and ice the damaged tissue in combination with either oral NSAIDS or corticosteroid injections has shown little promise with only ~60% of cases regaining functionality of the tendon (Paterno et al., 2013).

From the literature, this seems to be caused by a combination of poorly perfused tissue along …

On To Wisteria: Designing An Action-Adventure Role-Playing Game For The Empowerment Of The Preteen Female Audience, Kira Noelle Foglesong Dec 2019

On To Wisteria: Designing An Action-Adventure Role-Playing Game For The Empowerment Of The Preteen Female Audience, Kira Noelle Foglesong

All Theses

This thesis document details the design for an original action-adventure role-playing game (AARPG) specifically targeted towards the preteen female audience, ages 10-12, as well as the production of a promotional trailer to communicate the design. This thesis aims to bring this untapped market to an already established video game genre in order to communicate to this young female audience that these games are not “just for boys” by providing a clear example of an empowering and inclusive game that is designed to appeal to their demographic. Given that there are currently no AAA action-adventure RPGs targeted towards this group as …

An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Moral Foundations, Communications, And Behavioral Intent Regarding Global Tiger Conservation, Louise Flynn Orr Dec 2019

An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Moral Foundations, Communications, And Behavioral Intent Regarding Global Tiger Conservation, Louise Flynn Orr

All Theses

Human activity has dramatically increased the rate of biodiversity loss around the world (Diaz, Fargione, Chapin, Tilman, 2006). Tigers (Panthera tigris) are one of many species that have been significantly affected by human interference via habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trade, and human-wildlife conflicts. As a result, encouraging local community support for tiger conservation and the support of decision makers (governments, NGOs) is necessary, as is building international support through fund- and awareness-raising, even though many in the developed world have no firsthand relationship with tigers and would not be directly affected by its demise. Therefore, how should conservation organizations interested …

A Multimodal Exploration Of Altered Mechanical And Histological Properties In Tendons With Degenerative Tendinopathy, Olivia Newkirk Dec 2019

A Multimodal Exploration Of Altered Mechanical And Histological Properties In Tendons With Degenerative Tendinopathy, Olivia Newkirk

All Theses

Tendons injuries occur in people of all ages and can range from soreness and inflammation to full rupture requiring surgical repair. Larger injuries are typically preceded by accumulated damage that can change the strength of the tendon, and the way it responds to stress. A multimodal analysis of the changing properties serves to elucidate some of the changes both histologically and chemically, and how they affect the global properties like strength. Literature cites a number of changes including increased glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content, disordered collagen fibers, increased cellularity, increased cross-sectional area, and decreased Young’s Modulus.

This paper analyzes these five altered …

Internet trolls don’t troll. Not the professionals at least. Professional trolls don’t go on social media to antagonize liberals or belittle conservatives. They are not narrow minded, drunk or angry. They don’t lack basic English language skills. They certainly aren’t “somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds,” as the president once put it. Your stereotypical trolls do exist on social media, but the amateurs aren’t a threat to Western democracy

Professional trolls, on the other hand, are the tip of the spear in the new digital, ideological battleground. To combat the threat they pose, we must first understand …

Factors Affecting Cardiovascular Physiology In Cardiothoracic Surgery: Implications For Lumped-Parameter Modeling, Joshua Kaufmann, Ethan Kung Nov 2019

Factors Affecting Cardiovascular Physiology In Cardiothoracic Surgery: Implications For Lumped-Parameter Modeling, Joshua Kaufmann, Ethan Kung

Publications

Cardiothoracic surgeries are complex procedures during which the patient cardiovascular physiology is constantly changing due to various factors. Physiological changes begin with the induction of anesthesia, whose effects remain active into the postoperative period. Depending on the surgery, patients may require the use of cardiopulmonary bypass and cardioplegia, both of which affect postoperative physiology such as cardiac index and vascular resistance. Complications may arise due to adverse reactions to the surgery, causing hemodynamic instability. In response, fluid resuscitation and/or vasoactive agents with varying effects may be used in the intraoperative or postoperative periods to improve patient hemodynamics. These factors have …

From Bones To Drones: The Challenge Of Checking Out Unicorns, Rodger Bishop, Fredda Owens, Suzanne Rook Schilf

Presentations

Modern academic library shelves are no longer limited to books and media—collections today include “unicorns,” which we define as unique items such as DSLR cameras, VR headsets, puppets, modeling kits—even skeletons and drones. Supporting students’ ever-changing curricular and research needs requires constant creativity, problem solving, and technology expertise.

Partnerships across campus ensure close attention to the nuances of university curriculum. For Access Services, curating robust physical reserve collections involves purchasing considerations, special shelving and packaging, customized loan periods, reservation systems, and careful maintenance of high-use, delicate items.

Modifying Carbon Supports For Improved Ion-Exchange Capacity In Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Bryan Bill Nov 2019

Modifying Carbon Supports For Improved Ion-Exchange Capacity In Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Bryan Bill

All Theses

Sulfonated perfluorocyclobutyl phosphonate (s-PFCB-PO3) polymers are studied extensively in proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel-cell applications for their favorable ionic-conducting properties. Inspired by their high chemical, mechanical and thermal stability, PFCB polymers have been used by several groups as grafting compounds onto zirconia-decorated carbon black (ZrC) catalyst supports. The trifluorovinyl ether (TFVE) moiety of the aryl bis-TFVE monomer provides a template for polymerization by step-growth [2+2] cycloaddition to afford PFCB polymers which upon subsequent sulfonation can have high ion-exchange capacity and high proton conductivity. Aryl phosphonic acid substitution onto the terminal TFVE groups provides a route to anchoring the ionic polymers onto …

Multilevel Combinatorial Optimization Across Quantum Architectures, Hayato Ushijima-Mwesigwa, Ruslan Shaydulin, Christian F.A. Negre, Susan M. Mniszewski, Yuri Alexeev, Ilya Safro

Publications

Emerging quantum processors provide an opportunity to explore new approaches for solving traditional problems in the Post Moore's law supercomputing era. However, the limited number of qubits makes it infeasible to tackle massive real-world datasets directly in the near future, leading to new challenges in utilizing these quantum processors for practical purposes. Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms that leverage both quantum and classical types of devices are considered as one of the main strategies to apply quantum computing to large-scale problems. In this paper, we advocate the use of multilevel frameworks for combinatorial optimization as a promising general paradigm for designing hybrid …
