Growing Collaborative Outreach Efforts To Support The Well-Being Of Communities, Jessica Kohout-Tailor, Lili Klar
Growing Collaborative Outreach Efforts To Support The Well-Being Of Communities, Jessica Kohout-Tailor, Lili Klar
Publications
Libraries of all types provide outreach efforts for their patrons to reduce stress and promote well-being. Public, school, and academic libraries often partner with external entities to provide yoga, therapy dogs, and other creative activities for their patrons. Although collaboration is expected in public, school, and academic libraries, how to collaborate and/or grow collaborative efforts is lacking in the library literature. A former public library employee and a former school librarian came together to pilot a de-stressing program for students at their academic library and each semester have continued to grow their collaborative efforts with partners on and off-campus. Strategies …
Understanding Youth Worker Job Stress, Anne White, Alexandra Demand, Gina Mcgovern, Thomas Akiva
Understanding Youth Worker Job Stress, Anne White, Alexandra Demand, Gina Mcgovern, Thomas Akiva
Journal of Youth Development
Work in out-of-school learning programs can be stressful, and job stress may have cascading effects for the children and youth that attend. Fortunately, workplace supports can help decrease this stress. In this study, we aimed to understand how youth workers’ personal and work-related demands as well as supports predict on-the-job stress. We used multilevel modeling to investigate the demands and supports of a sample of 111 youth workers nested in 25 programs. Results suggested that job stress systematically varies at the program level. We found that stress at home and a negative staffing climate is associated with higher stress and …
Positive Youth Development Through Leisure: Confronting The Covid-19 Pandemic, Andrea Vest Ettekal, Jennifer Agans
Positive Youth Development Through Leisure: Confronting The Covid-19 Pandemic, Andrea Vest Ettekal, Jennifer Agans
Journal of Youth Development
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption in the lives of millions of people, including children and adolescents. Youth out-of-school time (OST) programs are essential ecological assets and their disruption during the pandemic may have a major impact on youth developmental pathways. Youth programs are one of the primary ways to promote positive youth development (PYD) and, in turn, develop healthy and thriving young adults who contribute positively to society. The pandemic raises the question of how to sustain developmentally oriented forms of youth leisure in times of crisis and, especially, how to support youth with few resources. Although there …

Mindful Learning Experiences Through Structured Reflections During A Youth Travel-Abroad Program, Gary Ellis, Andrew Lacanienta, William Zanolini, Darlene Locke
Journal of Youth Development
Mindfulness is an actively engaged state of mind when an individual is attuned to their surrounding multi- sensory elements. Mindful learning experiences during youth programs may enhance learning and the overall quality of experiences. We developed, executed, and evaluated an end-of-day structured mindfulness experience during a 4-H travel camp. In this paper we summarize the program and its outcomes and share details we believe will assist other youth professionals who may want to build structured mindfulness experiences into their own programs. Through the 4-H Global Travelers program, 20 youth participated in a 7-day travel camp in Argentina. At the end …

A mixed-methods design used observations and interviews to assess program quality. Researchers observed 4-H STEM programming and conducted individual and focus group interviews with youth, parents, community volunteers, corporate volunteers, and professionals. Observations were conducted using a validated observational tool, the Out-of-School Time (OST) Observation Instrument with STEM Plug-In. This instrument measured youth relationship building, youth participation, staff relationship building, …
Preventing Bullying: Consequences, Prevention, And Intervention, Suzanne Menestrel
Preventing Bullying: Consequences, Prevention, And Intervention, Suzanne Menestrel
Journal of Youth Development
Bullying is considered to be a significant public health problem with both short- and long-term physical and social-emotional consequences for youth. A large body of research indicates that youth who have been bullied are at increased risk of subsequent mental, emotional, health, and behavioral problems, especially internalizing problems, such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Given the growing awareness of bullying as a public health problem and the increasing evidence of short- and long- term physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral health and academic consequences of bullying behavior, there have been significant efforts at the practice, program, and policy levels …
Volunteer Training Needs For Successful 4-H Stem Programs, Karen Franck, Joseph Donaldson
Volunteer Training Needs For Successful 4-H Stem Programs, Karen Franck, Joseph Donaldson
Journal of Youth Development
Informal STEM education programs through youth-serving organizations like 4-H have the potential to help youth prepare for future STEM careers. Volunteers continue to be an important way to mentor and provide programs for youth with support and guidance from professionals working for youth organizations. 4-H STEM programs present challenges for 4-H professionals and traditional 4-H volunteers who often have limited knowledge and confidence in their ability to teach STEM skills. Recruiting science experts as volunteers to lead 4-H STEM programs is one way to provide these programs, but some experts have limited knowledge about youth development and how to engage …

“The Right Tools At The Right Time”: Improving Volunteer Education And Support, Alison White, Rebecca Sero, Lauren Hrncirik Scanga, Melissa Cummins
Journal of Youth Development
Success of the 4-H Youth Development (4-H) program relies heavily on the recruitment and retention of volunteers who implement 4-H programs. 4-H volunteers—in turn—rely on program professionals to continually improve the education and support systems they need to succeed. In this study, the researchers used a mixed-methods survey based on the 4-H Volunteer Research and Knowledge Competency (VRKC) taxonomy across the Washington State 4-H program to uncover (a) what education volunteers want for themselves and their county program, (b) what challenges they face in their role, and (c) what they need to succeed. The results of this study indicate that …

Advancing Academic Pathways For Building Capacity In The Youth Development Profession, William Quinn, Barry Garst, Edmond Bowers, Kayla Weston
Journal of Youth Development
The growing literature on the theory and practice of youth development provides a framework for youth- serving practitioners to design, implement, and grow youth programs in their communities. Yet such a framework is not widely known in many youth-serving organizations where professional development is variable. The youth development field would benefit from academically trained professionals who could apply the youth development literature to serve youth more effectively in organizations or communities. The purpose of this article is to describe a graduate level academic degree program in youth development in order to increase awareness of the importance of intentional leadership in …

Critical Positive Youth Development: A Frameworkfor Centering Critical Consciousness, Maru Gonzalez, Michael Kokozos, Christy Byrd, Katherine Mckee
Critical Positive Youth Development: A Frameworkfor Centering Critical Consciousness, Maru Gonzalez, Michael Kokozos, Christy Byrd, Katherine Mckee
Journal of Youth Development
While positive youth development (PYD) has proven beneficial in developing youth’s strengths, fomenting youth–adult partnerships, and cultivating leadership, missing from the framework is a critical understanding of the role and impact of power, privilege, and oppression on young people’s development and lived experiences. To address this absence, we developed a critical positive youth development (CPYD) framework. Bridging positive youth development (PYD) with critical theory, CPYD positions critical consciousness—consisting of critical reflection, political efficacy, and critical action—as the 7th C of PYD and as integral to both the learning process and healthy socioemotional development. This paper introduces the CPYD framework and …

This article examines the emergence of conspiracy theories linking COVID-19 with 5G, with a focus on Australia, the United States and United Kingdom. The article is in two parts. The first details long-standing concerns around mobile technologies and infrastructures before showing how they translate to specific worries about 5G technology. The second shows how these fears have fuelled specific conspiracies connecting 5G with COVID-19, how they have animated protests and acts of vandalism that have occurred during the pandemic, and the ongoing engagement of conspiracists with official inquiries into 5G. Finally, we argue that a productive way to understand what …

Enable Reliable And Secure Data Transmission In Resource-Constrained Emerging Networks, Xiaonan Zhang
All Dissertations
The increasing deployment of wireless devices has connected humans and objects all around the world, benefiting our daily life and the entire society in many aspects. Achieving those connectivity motivates the emergence of different types of paradigms, such as cellular networks, large-scale Internet of Things (IoT), cognitive networks, etc. Among these networks, enabling reliable and secure data transmission requires various resources including spectrum, energy, and computational capability. However, these resources are usually limited in many scenarios, especially when the number of devices is considerably large, bringing catastrophic consequences to data transmission. For example, given the fact that most of IoT …

ABSTRACT I
Little literature exists on measuring agricultural buildings with data collected from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) mounted aerial cameras. Survey grade tools produce highly accurate results, but with high financial and temporal costs. Satellite imagery is readily available and relatively low-cost but has low spatial and temporal resolution. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are emerging as a balance between these traditional methods for measuring and monitoring natural and constructed environments. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of building measurements in the orthophotos generated from satellite and UAV imagery based on control measurements without Ground Control Points …
