All Dissertations

Biofilm growth on engineered surfaces poses a risk to public health and presents a challenge in several industries, such as the food industry, as biofilms harbor a wide range of microorganisms, including opportunistic respiratory pathogens. In the context of drinking water, conventional secondary disinfectants such as free chlorine and chloramines are not known to fully prevent biofilm formation at relevant concentrations necessitating the development of scalable, effective interventions. The issue of biofilms and their role as a host to a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms can be more effectively addressed at the point-of-dispensing. Unlike building-point-of-entry or point-of-use devices interventions, there …

Mixed Conducting Composite Materials For Intermediate-Temperature Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells, Zeyu Zhao Aug 2021

Mixed Conducting Composite Materials For Intermediate-Temperature Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells, Zeyu Zhao

All Dissertations

Ionic conducting ceramics attracted much attention in their applications as electrolytes in many energy conversion, storage, and harvesting devices based on their high singular ionic conductivity (H+ or O2-). Within these applications, protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) show promising performance on electricity generation with high efficiency and low emission at intermediate temperatures. However, the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode side and the potential coking issue at the anode side are still the crucial stumbling stones to the further development of PCFCs. Utilizing materials with mixed conductivity, including co-ionic conductivity (H+ and O2-) and triple conductivity (H+, O2-, …

Monsters & Machines: An Assessment Of Dehumanization In High School Football Broadcasts, Adam P. Middleton May 2021

Monsters & Machines: An Assessment Of Dehumanization In High School Football Broadcasts, Adam P. Middleton

All Theses

Prior to this study, dehumanizing language, that which denies full humanness to others (Haslam, 2006), had been found to be present within collegiate and professional American Football broadcasts (Haslerig et al., 2019; Oates, 2007). In addition, high school games are also broadcasted, yet had remained unexplored. With dehumanization having links to negative effects for those exposed, and the presence of youth participants adding an extra complexity to this process, a need for assessment was presented. The objective of this research was to determine if dehumanizing language was present within high school broadcasts in hopes of creating a preliminary understanding of …
