(1) Background: Many schools and higher education settings have confronted the issue of reopening their facilities after the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, several airflow strategies spanning from adding portable air purifiers to major mechanical overhauls have been suggested to equip classrooms with what is necessary to provide a safe and reliable environment. Yet, there are many unknowns about specific contributions of the building system and its design and performance on indoor air quality (IAQ) improvements. (2) Methods: this study examined the combined effect of ventilation type, airflow rates, and filtration on IAQ in five different classrooms. Experiments were conducted by …

Discovery And Analysis Of Russian Misinformation Network, Creative Inquiry
Media Forensics Hub Creative Inquiry Reports
In this report, we identify a number of accounts that we conclude with a high degree of certainty are from an inauthentic network, and based on communication patterns and message content, conclude that they are operating in support of the Russian government to promote a pro-Putin narrative within the Russian Federation. In this network, we observe interconnectedness between accounts, similarities in narratives, and inauthenticity of the account identities.

The Development Of The Adaptable Self-Disclosure Scale (Asds): A Multidimensional Approach To Disclosure Assessment, Brandon Mcintyre
The Development Of The Adaptable Self-Disclosure Scale (Asds): A Multidimensional Approach To Disclosure Assessment, Brandon Mcintyre
All Dissertations
Understanding how individuals share or conceal parts of their identity has long been a topic of research with little consistency of measurement validation. The present study had three main goals: (1) define and conceptualize a multidimensional model of identity disclosure that can apply to any concealable identity, (2) generate a validated and adaptable scale for assessing any concealable identity, and (3) demonstrate the adaptability of this scale for a specific concealable identity. In Study 1, the proposed disclosure model was used to generate 72 items which were narrowed down using factor analysis to form the Adaptable Self-Disclosure Scale (ASDS). The …

Integrating Positive Youth Development: Insights From International Youth Development Programming, John Lindsay, Shannon Mcgarry, Assem Satmukhambetova, Katie Raymond
Journal of Youth Development
Effective international youth development programs go beyond single-issue interventions—they leverage the entire organization and project life cycle to advance positive youth outcomes. This paper illustrates how positive youth development (PYD) approaches can be adapted for and applied by organizations to promote positive outcomes for young people and communities globally. The article provides 6 insights from the International Youth Foundation’s (IYF) application of PYD principles across diverse youth development programs. Moreover, the authors present practical insights into what is required by practitioners, regardless of geographic boundaries, to effectively engage with, support, and meet the needs of youth and young adults whom …

Beyond The Trifold In Civics Presentations: The Measure Of Youth Policy Arguments, Carlos Hipolito-Delgado, Dane Stickney, Ben Kirshner, Andrew Maul
Journal of Youth Development
Youth are increasingly engaging in civic action to address social injustices. Many adult educators are also looking for instructional resources that support youth voice as a way to promote adolescent civic development and community change. Alas, assessment tools to support youth voice and policy argumentation are lacking. Existing tools overemphasize public speaking skills and rely on dated artifacts such as cardboard trifold posters. In this article we introduce the Measure of Youth Policy Arguments (MYPA), a tool designed to aid in the development and assessment of high-quality youth policy presentations. We also describe how to use the MYPA in formative …
Motivation (Constructs) Made Simpler: Adapting Self-Determination Theory For Community-Based Youth Development Programs, Denise Jones, Paul Feigenbaum
Motivation (Constructs) Made Simpler: Adapting Self-Determination Theory For Community-Based Youth Development Programs, Denise Jones, Paul Feigenbaum
Journal of Youth Development
Motivation is a key factor for enhancing psychological engagement among underserved youth. However, the abundance of motivational constructs complicates the translation of theory into practice by community-based youth development programs. This paper simplifies the translation process, presenting an actionable motivation model derived from Ryan and Deci’s (2000) self-determination theory (SDT) and its sub-construct, organismic integration theory (OIT). This model was developed by Youth Enrichment Services (YES), a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that cultivates long-term relationships, academic and professional success, and community engagement among low-income, adolescent students of color. Although intrinsic motivation to learn is more positively associated with psychological engagement than extrinsic …

Building Youth Infrastructure: Early Lessons From The Youth Systems Collaborative, Clare Ignatowski, Rachel Blum, Pia Saunders Campbell, Ricardo Perez-Pineda
Journal of Youth Development
In recent years the international youth development field has increasingly acknowledged that purposeful action at the systems level is critical for achieving positive outcomes for youth, sustainably, equitably, and at scale. In 2018 a group of international organizations formed the Youth Systems Collaborative, a community of practice whose aim is to promote international learning on youth systems change efforts. Building from the collective learning of this group, this paper offers a framework for understanding how widespread and sustained positive youth development outcomes can be achieved in low- and middle-income countries. Five enablers that advance systems change are presented: stakeholder collaboration; …

Impact Of An Empowerment And Employability Program For Adolescent Girls: Evidence From India, Prerna Kumar, Amenla Nuken, Nitin Datta, Aditi Vyas
Journal of Youth Development
Existing research indicates that self-efficacy, aspirations, skills, and an enabling environment are essential for the economic empowerment of adolescent girls. In India, due to deeply rooted patriarchal views and social norms, adolescent girls face a range of social restrictions on their ability to make any decisions about their education or life choices. Plan-It Girls, a multi-level, multi-stakeholder program seeks to build adolescent girls’ agency and promote gender equality to support their aspirations. It equips girls with a gender perspective, life skills, and employability skills to help them transition from school to work through a gender-integrated curriculum while also engaging with …

On The Right Path: Youth Development Amidst Colombia’S Sociocultural Transition, Holly Follmer-Reece, Paulina Velez-Gomez, Nadia Semenova Moratto-Vásquez, Sara Dodd
Journal of Youth Development
Colombia is amidst a sociocultural transition due to recent political movements towards ending the long-standing internal armed conflict. Development and implementation of youth programs that are responsive to the current societal context can contribute to this transition by investing in younger generations. This study features findings from the exploration phase of a community-based participatory research study to adapt a youth program from the United States for implementation in Colombia. Through focus group interviews, participants representing 4 different microsystems surrounding youth shared perceptions of youth who will be successful in this transitional context. Perceptions coalesced to reveal a process of positive …
Positive Youth Development: A Bridge To Connect Civic Education And Sustainable Development, Ashley Law, Virginia Atkinson
Positive Youth Development: A Bridge To Connect Civic Education And Sustainable Development, Ashley Law, Virginia Atkinson
Journal of Youth Development
Young people are not consistently or adequately valued by other global and community actors as contributing members and leaders. Given the current political context of democratic backsliding, school closures, and social distancing caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, young people are facing increased barriers to developing their democratic identities, learning how to be active citizens, and exercising their rights to participate in civic and political life. Now more than ever, development practitioners and the international community need to shift their approach to engaging young people in democracy and governance programs from one that views them as recipients to one that treats …

Longitudinal Research About, And Program Evaluations Of, Positive Youth Development In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: Methodological Issues And Options, Richard Lerner, Jonathan Tirrell, Patricia Gansert, Jacqueline Lerner
Journal of Youth Development
The study of positive youth development (PYD) requires theory-based methodological considerations pertinent to measurement, research and program design, and data analysis. We outline the appropriate steps that researchers and program evaluators must enact to address these methodological foci in their respective attempts to describe, explain, and optimize the course of positive development among diverse youth around the world. We focus on longitudinal (developmental) research designed to evaluate programs promoting PYD in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where life challenges are shaped by multiple adverse situations associated with racism, poverty, gender inequalities, political inequities, and the absence of adequate health and …

Journal of Youth Development
Youth participatory action research, child-led research, and child-led activism are being increasingly employed to counter adultism in social work and development contexts, in a way to break down barriers for young people to have their voices heard on issues and decisions about their lives. This commentary comprises 2 open letters from a young researcher and advocate for children’s well-being and rights in Romania. The first letter is addressed to fellow young people and shares the journey of learning about and subsequently researching the issue of sexual violence, as well as a call to young people to stand up and use …

Youth Perspectives On Virtual After-School Programming During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Candace Evans, Renita Moore, Scot Seitz, Isatou Jatta
Journal of Youth Development
After-school programs provide a range of support for students. During school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many after-school programs were also forced to close or to find new ways to provide services to youth, such as through virtual after-school programming. We surveyed 244 youth who participated in virtual after-school programs about their access to virtual programming as well as their experiences. We considered their pre-closure experiences as well. We also surveyed 8 program directors of after-school programs who were providing virtual programming. We found that Internet access hindered the ability of more than 1 in 4 students to access …

Lgbtq+ Inclusion And Support: An Analysis Of Challenges And Opportunities Within 4-H, Joseph Rand, Megan Paceley, Jessica Fish, Sloan Okrey Anderson
Journal of Youth Development
LGBTQ+ youth experience health disparities compared with heterosexual and cisgender youth. Community-based, positive youth development organizations are an important resource to support and affirm LGBTQ+ youth. This study aimed to identify the opportunities and challenges in supporting LGBTQ+ youth within 4-H. The study took place in one state in the United States within a 4-H program and employed qualitative, community-based methods using SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analyses and focus groups of 4-H staff, support staff, volunteers, and youth participants. The majority of participants were White and middle class with direct connections to the 4-H program. Thematic analyses were conducted …
Framing Indigenous Identity Inclusion In Positive Youth Development: Proclaimed Ignorance, Partial Vacuum, And The Peoplehood Model, Joshua Farella, Joshua Moore, Juan Arias, Jeremy Elliott-Engel
Framing Indigenous Identity Inclusion In Positive Youth Development: Proclaimed Ignorance, Partial Vacuum, And The Peoplehood Model, Joshua Farella, Joshua Moore, Juan Arias, Jeremy Elliott-Engel
Journal of Youth Development
Indigenous youth are systemically underserved by 4-H and other positive youth development (PYD) organizations. Many underserved First Nation communities in the United States could greatly benefit from programs that foster youth thriving; however, these programs tend to be ineffective in creating culturally reflective spaces for Indigenous participants. In this article, we argue that the Peoplehood Model should serve as a unifying model for the inclusion of Indigenous identity in programming, and that cultural humility should be firmly integrated into program design and assessment. We also propose that, to support Indigenous youth thriving, PYD practitioners must intentionally create a “partial vacuum” …

Exploring Camp Policies And Leadership Opinions On Digital Media Use In Camps, Ashley Dehudy, Jenny Radesky, Natalie Schellpfeffer, Michael Ambrose
Journal of Youth Development
While summer camps provide children a unique experience away from home, this environment may lead to increased and unsupervised use of digital media. Camps’ policies and leaderships’ views on digital media consumption in camps are currently unknown. To elucidate current trends, we partnered with CampDoc.com to survey a national sample of camp leadership about digital media policies and practices. A single response was selected from each camp and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Free text responses reflecting on positive and negative experiences with digital media were assessed using thematic analysis. We received 722 responses from 363 of the 950 camps within …
Sociopolitical Participation Among Marginalized Youth: Do Political Identification And Ideology Matter?, Aixa Marchand, Michael Frisby, Maura Kraemer, Channing Mathews
Sociopolitical Participation Among Marginalized Youth: Do Political Identification And Ideology Matter?, Aixa Marchand, Michael Frisby, Maura Kraemer, Channing Mathews
Journal of Youth Development
Engaging youth in the political system has promise for creating social change and ensuring the future of our democracy. Sociopolitical participation—individual and/or collective action to facilitate change—may be biased towards more liberal or Democratic views, which emphasize reform to create social equity. The aim of this study is to test if youth who vary in political ideology (i.e., conservative, liberal) and political identification (i.e., Republican, Democrat) participate at different levels and whether this measurement of sociopolitical participation is in fact biased. These issues were examined among 237 youth attending a large Midwestern high school who generally identified with historically marginalized …
Increasing Latinx Youth Engagement Across Different Types Of After-School Organizations, Fe Moncloa, Nancy Erbstein, Aarti Subramaniam
Increasing Latinx Youth Engagement Across Different Types Of After-School Organizations, Fe Moncloa, Nancy Erbstein, Aarti Subramaniam
Journal of Youth Development
This article explores how Latinx youth engagement practices vary across different types of out-of-school organizations that successfully sustain Latinx youth participation. Data are drawn from a qualitative study of 13 California organizations that each emphasize one of 3 missions: social justice youth development, “one-stop” wrap-around services, or academic enrichment. While all organizations are found to adhere to a core set of Latinx youth development guiding principles, there are nuanced differences in how they are operationalized in practice across varied organization types, reflecting variation in terms of discourse, scale, and scope. These findings highlight the need for youth development practitioners and …

Acquisition Of Knowledge And Skills In An Online Graduate Degree In Youth Development Leadership, William Quinn, Edmond Bowers, Parisa Hadiandehkordi, Barry Garst
Journal of Youth Development
As the youth development field has grown, there has been an increased focus on building academic preparation programs in youth development that prepare leaders and staff in youth-serving organizations. Very few degree programs exist in preparing youth leaders. Even fewer, if any, evaluations have been conducted on the potential outcomes and benefits of graduate degree programs on alumni who serve in leadership positions in youth organizations. This study presents findings from a survey of graduates of a master’s level youth development leadership (YDL) degree program. The findings focus on graduates’ perceptions of the outcomes linked to attaining a degree from …

Resilience-Informed Positive Youth Development Programs In International Development, Nalini Bajaj Chugani, Sabeen Faizullah, Cornelia Janke, Rebecca Jeudin
Journal of Youth Development
In countries affected by crisis and conflict, systems that support young people are often disrupted. Youth who are going through critical periods of physical, cognitive, and social–emotional development are especially affected by these disruptions. We examined positive youth development programming strategies that have been used in crisis and conflict-affected areas to build youth resilience, defined as a young person’s ability to manage risk (absorptive capacity), enhance assets and agency (adaptive capacity), and contribute to society (transformative capacity). We summarize key concepts of positive youth development and resilience and then examine how these have been interpreted and applied in youth development …
Agency And Empowerment For Adolescent Girls: An Intentional Approach To Policy And Programming, Prerna Banati, Lauren Rumble, Nicola Jones, Sarah Hendriks
Agency And Empowerment For Adolescent Girls: An Intentional Approach To Policy And Programming, Prerna Banati, Lauren Rumble, Nicola Jones, Sarah Hendriks
Journal of Youth Development
As national governments roll out COVID response plans, an opportunity arises to re-cast adolescent girls’ programs to centrally anchor them on girls’ voices, leadership, ambitions, and assets in development policies and programs. Drawing together the evidence on what we know works for adolescent girls, as well as the growing literature on positive strengths-based programming which are gradually and increasingly being applied, this commentary calls for a girl-intentional approach to policy and programming. A girl-intentional approach is described through 3 case studies, which illustrate the additionality of new or improved adolescent knowledge, skills, and competencies; improved opportunities for adolescent engagement, voice, …
How The Rubik’S Cube Helps Explain The Evolving Approach To Effective Youth Development, Michael Mccabe
How The Rubik’S Cube Helps Explain The Evolving Approach To Effective Youth Development, Michael Mccabe
Journal of Youth Development
here is increased recognition that effective youth programming requires a Positive Youth Development approach that is multi-dimensional and intentional in terms of utilizing interventions that take into account age-appropriateness; socio-ecological considerations for youth, their families, and the local system; and that address the integrated needs of young people, rather than single-sector solutions. Addressing the complexity of this 3-dimensional integrated approach is key to putting into practice the findings of the Systematic Review of Positive Youth Development in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and helping develop thriving, resilient youth. The manuscript draws from recent USAID youth activities and research on the impact …
Management And Governance Accountability To Children: Participation And Representation In Organisational Decision Making, Claire O’Kane, Annabel Trapp, Paul Stephenson, Julia Smith-Brake
Management And Governance Accountability To Children: Participation And Representation In Organisational Decision Making, Claire O’Kane, Annabel Trapp, Paul Stephenson, Julia Smith-Brake
Journal of Youth Development
Children’s participation and accountability to children are increasingly common aspirations of child-focused organisations; development agencies and research institutions frequently use young people’s advisory councils as one path to participation. A key challenge is to not only find meaningful ways to institutionalise children’s views as part of organisational decision making, but also to identify and address barriers to participation. This article presents the findings of a commissioned landscape assessment to identify good practices and lessons learned from child-focused agencies, in order to inform the operationalisation of children’s requests on programme improvements and accountability to children. The study was exploratory and qualitative. …
Leveling Up: Connected Mentor Learning In A Digital Media Production After-School Space, Nathan Phillips, Virginia Killian Lund
Leveling Up: Connected Mentor Learning In A Digital Media Production After-School Space, Nathan Phillips, Virginia Killian Lund
Journal of Youth Development
This article introduces mirrored practice of leveling up as a model for educator learning grounded in connected learning and the connected mentor framework. Our purpose is to introduce this model and share examples of how it can be enacted. We argue that the model is a rich and successful way for youth development professionals to expand their capacities as educators and to support expansive possibilities for young people’s learning. The model supports all educators’ learning and growth, but it is particularly applicable to mentors working in interest-driven, informal learning environments like makerspaces and YOUmedia learning labs. The model is drawn …
