Searching For H3+ In The Atmosphere Of The Exoplanet Hd 209458b, Matthew Troutman May 2007

Searching For H3+ In The Atmosphere Of The Exoplanet Hd 209458b, Matthew Troutman

All Theses

This thesis searches or the H3+ molecule in the atmosphere of HD 209458b. This exoplanet has been well studied since its initial discovery. H3+ is a diagnostic of the thermal regulation in the ionosphere of the exoplanet, and therefore is an advantageous molecule to test both atmospheric models and observational limits. Both models and observational limits need to be constrained as steps towards the ultimate goal of detecting biomarkers in the atmospheres of exoplanets. The exoplanet HD 209458b was observed during transit using PHOENIX on Gemini South in 2005.

Gamma Ray Burst Afterglow Observations, Adria Updike May 2007

Gamma Ray Burst Afterglow Observations, Adria Updike

All Theses

Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are among the most luminous explosions in the universe. We present an overview of the observational history of GRBs and the mechanisms involved, then focus on one burst in particular, GRB 070125 and our observational campaign. Finally, we present the results of a model of the global optical response to GRBs, and make recommendations as to how we could improve the global response in preparation for upcoming satellite missions.

A Linear-Time Algorithm For Broadcast Domination In A Tree, John Dabney May 2007

A Linear-Time Algorithm For Broadcast Domination In A Tree, John Dabney

All Theses

The broadcast domination problem is a variant of the classical minimum dominating set problem in which a transmitter of power p at vertex v is capable of dominating all vertices within distance p from v. Our goal is to assign a broadcast power f(v) to every vertex v in a graph such that the sum for all v over V of f(v) is minimized, and such that every vertex u with f(u) = 0 is within distance f(v) of some vertex v with f(v) > 0. The problem is solvable in polynomial time on a general graph, and Blair et al. …

The Role Of Fire In The Ecotone Between Upland Pine And Bottomland Hardwoods, Emily Duerr May 2007

The Role Of Fire In The Ecotone Between Upland Pine And Bottomland Hardwoods, Emily Duerr

All Theses

Southeastern coastal plain landscapes are recognized for sharp transitions between upland pine and bottomland hardwoods. The ecotone is characterized by distinct elevational and compositional changes and thought to be, in part, maintained by fire. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of fire in this ecotone by examining differences between burned and unburned ecotones as well as changes from pre- to post-burn conditions on the coastal plain of South Carolina.
Two locations were selected for this study, the Francis Marion National Forest (FMNF) and a nearby private plantation. Vegetation and environmental variables were collected in the summers …

Warm Gas In The Inner Disks Around Young Intermediate-Mass Stars, Sean D. Brittain, Theodore Simon, Joan R. Najita, Terrence W. Rettig Apr 2007

Warm Gas In The Inner Disks Around Young Intermediate-Mass Stars, Sean D. Brittain, Theodore Simon, Joan R. Najita, Terrence W. Rettig

Publications

The characterization of gas in the inner disks around young stars is of particular interest because of its connection to planet formation. In order to study the gas in inner disks, we have obtained high-resolution K- and M-band spectroscopy of 14 intermediate-mass young stars. In sources that have optically thick inner disks, i.e., E(K-L)>1, our detection rate of the rovibrational CO transitions is 100%, and the gas is thermally excited. Of the five sources that do not have optically thick inner disks, we only detect the rovibrational CO transitions from HD 141569. In this case, we show that the …

Infrared High-Resolution Spectroscopy Of Post-Agb Circumstellar Disks. I. Hr 4049: The Winnowing Flow Observed?, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Sean D. Brittain, David L. Lambert

Publications

High-resolution infrared spectroscopy in the 2.3-4.6 micron region is reported for the peculiar A supergiant, single-lined spectroscopic binary HR 4049. Lines from the CO fundamental and first overtone, OH fundamental, and several H2O vibration-rotation transitions have been observed in the near-infrared spectrum. The spectrum of HR 4049 appears principally in emission through the 3 and 4.6 micron region and in absorption in the 2 micron region. The 4.6 micron spectrum shows a rich 'forest' of emission lines. All the spectral lines observed in the 2.3-4.6 micron spectrum are shown to be circumbinary in origin. The presence of OH and H2O …

Possible Identification Of A Metal-Rich Old Moving Group: High-Resolution Spectroscopy Of Candidate Members, Abigail R. Daane, Jeremy R. King, Simon C. Schuler Apr 2007

Possible Identification Of A Metal-Rich Old Moving Group: High-Resolution Spectroscopy Of Candidate Members, Abigail R. Daane, Jeremy R. King, Simon C. Schuler

Publications

Using new high-resolution spectroscopic observations from both the McDonald Observatory 2.7 m and Kitt Peak National Observatory 4 m telescopes, we observed four candidate members of the Ursa Major moving group previously suggested to instead belong to a significantly older kinematic assemblage. The Fe abundances we measure strongly suggest that these stars are not UMa members but form a more metal-rich group of stars (+0.10 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ +0.18) with an age near 3 Gyr. Our [Ca/H] determinations corroborate this result. The apparent similarities in metallicity and previously discovered UVW space motions lend credence to prior suggestions that these stars …

Warm Hcn, C2h2, And Co In The Disk Of Gv Tau, E L. Gibb, K A. Vanbrunt, Sean D. Brittain, T W. Rettig

Publications

We present the first high-resolution, ground-based observations of HCN and C2H2 toward the T Tauri binary star system GV Tau. We detected strong absorption due to HCN nu3 and weak C2H2 [nu3 and nu2+(nu4+nu5)0+] absorption toward the primary (GV Tau S) but not the infrared companion. We also report CO column densities and rotational temperatures, and present abundances relative to CO of HCN/CO~0.6% and C2H/CO~1.2% and an upper limit for CH4/CO

Poisson-Boltzmann Calculations Of Nonspecific Salt Effects On Protein-Protein Binding Free Energies, Claudia Bertonati, Barry Honig, Emil Alexov Mar 2007

Poisson-Boltzmann Calculations Of Nonspecific Salt Effects On Protein-Protein Binding Free Energies, Claudia Bertonati, Barry Honig, Emil Alexov

Publications

The salt dependence of the binding free energy of five protein-protein hetero-dimers and two homo-dimers/tetramers was calculated from numerical solutions to the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. Overall, the agreement with experimental values is very good. In all cases except one involving the highly charged lactoglobulin homo-dimer, increasing the salt concentration is found both experimentally and theoretically to decrease the binding affinity. To clarify the source of salt effects, the salt-dependent free energy of binding is partitioned into screening terms and to self-energy terms that involve the interaction of the charge distribution of a monomer with its own ion atmosphere. In six of …

Study Of Structure Development During Melt Spinning Of Isotactic Polypropylene Fibers Using Raman Spectroscopy And Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction Simultaneously , Dushyanth Pandana Jan 2007

Study Of Structure Development During Melt Spinning Of Isotactic Polypropylene Fibers Using Raman Spectroscopy And Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction Simultaneously , Dushyanth Pandana

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) fibers have a wide variety of applications. Specific end-use applications require specific properties, which are dependent on the polymer morphology produced during processing. Therefore, the final properties of a material are dependent on the processing parameters. iPP fibers are produced mainly by melt spinning. The important processing parameters in the melt spinning process include, the extrusion temperatures, the throughput and shear rates, the rate of cooling, and the feed and draw roll take-up velocities. An understanding of how the morphology develops along the spinline, and the effect of processing parameters on the morphology is crucial in …

Comparative Study Of Haptic And Visual Feedback For Kinesthetic Training Tasks, Ravikiran Singapogu Jan 2007

Comparative Study Of Haptic And Visual Feedback For Kinesthetic Training Tasks, Ravikiran Singapogu

All Theses

Haptics is the sense of simulating and applying the sense of human touch. Application of touch sensations is done with haptic interface devices. The past few years has seen the development of several haptic interface devices with a wide variety of technologies used in their design. This thesis introduces haptic technologies and includes a survey of haptic interface devices and technologies. An improvement in simulating and applying touch sensation when using the Quanser Haptic Wand with proSense is suggested in this work using a novel five degree-of-freedom algorithm. This approach uses two additional torques to enhance the three degree-of-freedom of …

Application Of Classical Versus Bayesian Statistical Methods To On-Line Radiological Monitoring, Amy Attardo Jan 2007

Application Of Classical Versus Bayesian Statistical Methods To On-Line Radiological Monitoring, Amy Attardo

All Theses

The on-line monitoring for illicit radioactive material with a minimum number of false detections is a critical need for homeland security. The primary objectives of this work were to apply both Bayesian and classical statistical process control chart techniques to the on-line monitoring of radiological data and to then compare the Type I and Type II error incidence rates. Two versions of the cumulative sum (CUSUM) and Shiryayev-Roberts (S-R) procedures known as total reset and alarm reset methods were developed. The best method in terms of Type I errors was the S-R total reset method. In terms of Type II …

Wind Damage And Salinity Effects Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita On Coastal Baldcypress Forests Of Louisiana, William Conner, Thomas W. Doyle, Richard H. Day, Ken W. Krauss, Christopher M. Swarzenski Jan 2007

Wind Damage And Salinity Effects Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita On Coastal Baldcypress Forests Of Louisiana, William Conner, Thomas W. Doyle, Richard H. Day, Ken W. Krauss, Christopher M. Swarzenski

Publications

The frequency of hurricane landfall in a given coastal stretch may play a more important role in the ecology of coastal forests than previously thought because of direct and indirect impacts of fallen trees and the introduction of salt water that lingers long after the storm passes. Findings show that surge events can inundate interior freshwater forests many miles from the coast and elevate soil salinities twofold to threefold. These elevated salinities may contribute to delayed mortality of certain tree species and set the stage for eventual forest decline and dieback.

Incorporation Of Capillary-Channeled Polymer (C-Cp) Fibers Into Micropipette Tips For Solid Phase Extraction With Applications In Bioanalysis, Donald Fornea Dec 2006

Incorporation Of Capillary-Channeled Polymer (C-Cp) Fibers Into Micropipette Tips For Solid Phase Extraction With Applications In Bioanalysis, Donald Fornea

All Theses

Solid phase extraction (SPE), is a widely used sample preparation method that is currently experiencing a surge in research interest, clever architecture/format development, and stationary phase characterization.1-3 SPE devices commonly exist in syringe, cartridge, disk, and micropipette tip formats.4 Micropipette tip SPE has enhanced the determination of proteins by electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) by handling micro-liter volumes of sample and buffer removal/solvent exchange.5-7 Buffers have deleterious effects on ionization taking place in MS sources due to preferential ionization, ion suppression effects, and the formation of adduct species competing for ionization in …

Change-Point Tests For Precipitation Data, Michael Robbins Dec 2006

Change-Point Tests For Precipitation Data, Michael Robbins

All Theses

A new method is required for change-point testing of precipitation data that is capable of applying valid precipitation models. First, stochastic precipation models are researched and classified. Typically, the occurrence of rain is modeled using a two-state, first-order Markov chain, and the intensity of rain is modeled using a two-parameter gamma distribution. Using the likelihood ratio test statistic, methods are devoloped for testing for fixed and unknown change-points. These methods are developed for various models, including the MC/gamma model and simplified versions. The distribution of the LRT is unknown, however its asymptotic distribution is known for both the fixed and …

Onset And Persistence Of Biogenic Meromixis In A Filling Pit Lake-A Limnological Perspective , Oscar Flite Dec 2006

Onset And Persistence Of Biogenic Meromixis In A Filling Pit Lake-A Limnological Perspective , Oscar Flite

All Dissertations

Open pit mining usually results in a void that, over time, fills with water and becomes a pit lake. The goal for pit lakes is to create sustainable systems that positively contribute to local and regional watersheds. One long-standing hypothesis for attaining the goal of sustainability has been to create and maintain meromictic lakes (lakes that do not completely mix on a yearly cycle). It is believed that meromixis minimizes atmospheric oxygen exposure to pit walls and concomitant acid generation and minimizes reentrainment of metals to the upper waters during seasonal mixes. This seems to be a reasonable goal but …

Harmonic Detection Of Resonance In Micro- And Nano- Cantilevers, Jay Gaillard Dec 2006

Harmonic Detection Of Resonance In Micro- And Nano- Cantilevers, Jay Gaillard

All Dissertations

Over the past decade there has been an explosion in the study of cantilevered beams on the micron and submicron dimension. The applications and research that involve these structures include state-of-the-art electronic components, sensors, and more recently, studies aimed at elucidating the mechanical properties of cantilevered carbon nanotubes and semiconducting nanowires. In nanoelectro-mechanical systems (NEMS), it is desirable to develop a capacitive readout method involving only two electrodes that are fully compliant with standard CMOS technology. However, the main drawback with this method is the ability to detect resonance in the presence of parasitic capacitance, which is due to the …

A Multidimensional Scaling And Participatory Design Approach To Classify Open Ended Aircraft Maintenance Data, Kunal Kapoor Dec 2006

A Multidimensional Scaling And Participatory Design Approach To Classify Open Ended Aircraft Maintenance Data, Kunal Kapoor

All Dissertations

The quality assurance data to be analyzed by the web-based surveillance and auditing tool (WebSAT) is both qualitative and quantitative. The forced responses to checklist questions provide a definitive outcome identifying the effectiveness of the four quality assurance work functions. On the other hand, open-ended responses, the second type of response for capturing maintenance errors, are qualitative in nature since they reflect what the auditors and quality assurance representatives observe during their interactions at vendor locations. This research proposes to apply the statistical technique of multidimensional scaling (MDS) and the User centered Design (UCD) method of Participatory Design (PD) to …

Development Of Fatigue Predictive Models Of Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (Rac) Containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Mixtures, Feipeng Xiao Dec 2006

Development Of Fatigue Predictive Models Of Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (Rac) Containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Mixtures, Feipeng Xiao

All Dissertations

In recent years, some by-products such as crumb rubber has been used to save money, protect the environment, and extend the life of asphalt pavements. In addition, the utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is an acceptable practice in many states around the United States and many countries all over the world. However, the use of RAP containing crumb rubber has not been investigated in great detail, so it is essential to explore whether these materials have a positive effect on the fatigue life of asphalt pavement. In general, previous experience shows that the use of RAP has proven to …

The Effect Of Water Droplet Oscillations On The Scavenging Efficiency Of Micron Sized Particles, Raymond Mcdonnell Dec 2006

The Effect Of Water Droplet Oscillations On The Scavenging Efficiency Of Micron Sized Particles, Raymond Mcdonnell

All Theses

It has been hypothesized that drop oscillations and vortex shedding within the droplet wake affect the scavenging efficiency, E, of particles. However, no conclusive results have been presented on the effect these phenomena might have on particle scavenging. To address this need, experiments were conducted using oscillating water drops and water drops damped by the addition of glycerol. The scavenging efficiencies were measured for millimeter-sized droplets scavenging micron-sized particles. These results show that E is increased by drop oscillations where the particle diameter is large, but E is decreased by these oscillations when the particle diameter is small.
