Do The Ethics Of Authorship Matter?: Exploring The Implications Of The Office Of Research Integrity's Narrow Definition Of Research Misconduct, Caroline Linvill
Do The Ethics Of Authorship Matter?: Exploring The Implications Of The Office Of Research Integrity's Narrow Definition Of Research Misconduct, Caroline Linvill
All Theses
Over the past 25 years, federal government entities have become involved in defining and regulating misconduct in scientific research. Consistently, these definitions of research misconduct forbid three key actions--falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism--but do not take into account other professional communication issues, mainly authorship. This lack of acknowledgement and regulation of authorship--particularly from the Office of Research Integrity, the nation's highest research ethics body--seems to imply and communicate that the ethics of authorship are not important in science. However, this thesis demonstrates, through rhetorical, historical and interview research, that authorship ethics do matter to scientists; in fact, authorship is a leading …
Fault-Tree Model For Bridge Collapse Risk Analysis, Caitlyn Davis-Mcdaniel
Fault-Tree Model For Bridge Collapse Risk Analysis, Caitlyn Davis-Mcdaniel
All Theses
Bridges are vital components of the United States surface transportation infrastructure and, moreover, support the growth of our nation's economy. However, over the past few decades the design capacity and service condition of many bridges in the U.S. has been challenged. Numerous incidents of bridge collapse call for an urgent need to develop a systematic method of assessing the failure risks and identifying the initiating events that can lead to a bridge collapse. This thesis presents a process of bridge failure risk analysis through fault-tree modeling and identification of specific countermeasures, to minimize failure risk, related to structural health monitoring …
Laminar Flame Speed Estimation From Experimental Data Using A Quasi-Dimensional Turbulent Flame Entrainment Combustion Simulation For Spark Ignition Engines, Akash Desai
All Theses
The goal of this research is to develop a thermodynamic simulation of spark-ignition engine combustion that uses a predictive burn-rate model. Previously done thermodynamic engine simulations in MATLAB are based on a specified burn rate model. Also, the effect of turbulence parameters on the rate of mass burn up is not considered. A predictive burn rate model is necessary to study the effect of different fuels on spark ignition engine combustion. The effect of laminar flame speed and turbulent intensity on combustion is difficult to assess experimental due to the difficulty in the measurement of these two variables. Thus, the …

Posets From Admissible Coxeter Sequences, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit
Posets From Admissible Coxeter Sequences, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit
Publications
We study the equivalence relation on the set of acyclic orientations of an undirected graph Γ generated by source-to-sink conversions. These conversions arise in the contexts of admissible sequences in Coxeter theory, quiver representations, and asynchronous graph dynamical systems. To each equivalence class we associate a poset, characterize combinatorial properties of these posets, and in turn, the admissible sequences. This allows us to construct an explicit bijection from the equivalence classes over Γ to those over Γ′ and Γ′′, the graphs obtained from Γ by edge deletion and edge contraction of a fixed cycle-edge, respectively. This bijection yields quick and …

The Future Of Youth Development: Multiple Wisdoms, Alternate Pathways And Aligned Accountability, Dale Blyth
The Future Of Youth Development: Multiple Wisdoms, Alternate Pathways And Aligned Accountability, Dale Blyth
Journal of Youth Development
Based on trends and events observed or experienced by the author over the last 30 years in research, evaluation and practice, this article examines three challenges facing and shaping the future of the youth programs as contexts for development. The first challenge surrounds how the field comes to understand, value and integrate different forms of knowing -- particularly quantitative data. The second challenge represents how the field shifts from proving it makes a difference to improving the ways it makes a difference by expanding the pathways to impact. The third challenge regards how the field responds to and shapes accountability …

Electronic Charge And Spin Density Distribution In A Quantum Ring With Spin-Orbit And Coulomb Interactions, Csaba Daday, Andrei Manolescu, D C. Marinescu, Vidar Gudmundsson
Electronic Charge And Spin Density Distribution In A Quantum Ring With Spin-Orbit And Coulomb Interactions, Csaba Daday, Andrei Manolescu, D C. Marinescu, Vidar Gudmundsson
Publications
Charge and spin density distributions are studied within a nanoring structure endowed with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions (SOIs). For a small number of electrons, in the presence of an external magnetic field and of the Coulomb interaction, the energy spectrum of the system is calculated through an exact numerical diagonalization procedure. The eigenstates thus determined are used to estimate the charge and spin densities around the ring. We find that when more than two electrons are considered, the charge density deformations induced by SOIs are dramatically flattened by the Coulomb repulsion, while the spin density deformations are amplified.

Results of a detailed abundance analysis of the solar twins 16 Cyg A and 16 Cyg B based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio echelle spectroscopy are presented. 16 Cyg B is known to host a giant planet while no planets have yet been detected around 16 Cyg A. Stellar parameters are derived directly from our high-quality spectra, and the stars are found to be physically similar, with ΔTeff = +43 K, Δ log g =−0.02 dex, and Δξ = +0.10 km s−1 (in the sense of A − B), consistent with previous findings. Abundances of 15 elements are derived and …

A Missense Mutation In Clic2 Associated With Intellectual Disability Is Predicted By In Silico Modeling To Affect Protein Stability And Dynamics, Shawn Witham, Kyoko Takano, Charles Schwartz, Emil Alexov
Publications
Large-scale next generation resequencing of X chromosome genes identified a missense mutation in the CLIC2 gene on Xq28 in a male with X-linked intellectual disability (XLID) and not found in healthy individuals. At the same time, numerous nsSNPs (nonsynonomous SNP) have been reported in the CLIC2 gene in healthy individuals indicating that the CLIC2 protein can tolerate amino acid substitutions and be fully functional. To test the possibility that p.H101Q is a disease-causing mutation, we performed in silico simulations to calculate the effects of the p.H101Q mutation on CLIC2 stability, dynamics, and ionization states while comparing the effects obtained for …

Context. Classical novae (CNe) represent the major class of supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) in the central region of the galaxy M 31. Aims. We performed a dedicated monitoring of the M 31 central region with XMM-Newton and Chandra between Nov. 2007 and Feb. 2008 and between Nov. 2008 and Feb. 2009, respectively, to find SSS counterparts of CNe, determine the duration of their SSS phase, and derive physical outburst parameters. Methods. We systematically searched our data for X-ray counterparts of CNe, determined their X-ray light curves and characterised their spectra using blackbody fits and white dwarf (WD) atmosphere models. Additionally, …
Cushop: A Simulated Shopping Environment Fostering Consumer-Centric Packaging Design & Testing, Charles Tonkin
Cushop: A Simulated Shopping Environment Fostering Consumer-Centric Packaging Design & Testing, Charles Tonkin
All Dissertations
Consumer product packaging provides product damage protection, extends product shelf life, and communicates product usage instructions to the consumer. Its collective contribution to the waste stream is notorious, but its role in product salability is much less understood. Consumers now make the majority of product purchase decisions while present at the shelf, and since they do it very quickly (within 5-8 seconds), and do not appear to adhere to strong brand loyalty as was once more common, packaging (and more specifically, its aesthetics and contrast with its competitors) plays a dominant role in the decision-making process. It is difficult, however, …

Factors Influencing Reproductive Success Of Near-Shore Seabirds In Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, South Carolina, Gillian Brooks
All Theses
Little is known about the reproductive success of Least Terns (Sternula antillarum) and Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) along the coast of South Carolina. It appears reproductive success of both species may be limited by a variety of ecological stressors. To provide baseline measurements of reproductive success of Least Terns and Black Skimmers in South Carolina, and to assess factors which may influence nest success of both species, 257 Least Tern and 347 Black Skimmer nests were monitored at four colony sites within Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, 2009-2010. Nest success was highly variable among colony sites and years for both …
Social And Spatial Relationships Driving Landowner Attitudes Towards Aquatic Conservation, Samuel Chambers
Social And Spatial Relationships Driving Landowner Attitudes Towards Aquatic Conservation, Samuel Chambers
All Theses
Because of a gap between the science and practice of conservation planning, it has been suggested that there is a need for better understanding of the social systems within which conservation projects are embedded. Given that more than half of the land in the United States is privately owned and that private land covers the majority of the mapped endangered species habitat, understanding attitudes of private landowners towards biodiversity conservation may help to bridge the science-practice gap. Aquatic biodiversity is particularly imperiled throughout the world; in the United States headwater streams and small, isolated wetlands receive little protection through regulations …

Stress Relaxation Of Glass Using A Parallel Plate Viscometer, Guy-Marie Vallet
Stress Relaxation Of Glass Using A Parallel Plate Viscometer, Guy-Marie Vallet
All Theses
Currently, grinding and polishing is the traditional method for manufacturing optical glass lenses. However, for a few years now, precision glass molding has gained importance for its flexibility in manufacturing aspheric lenses. With this new method, glass viscoelasticity and more specifically stress relaxation are important phenomena in the glass transition region to control the molding process and to predict the final lens shape.
The goal of this research is to extract stress relaxation parameters in shear of Pyrex¨ glass by using a Parallel Plate Viscometer (PPV). The PPV machine was originally created to measure the viscosity of glass solid cylinders …
An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Gestures To Enhance Concept Retention In Chemistry Instruction, Jeffrey Lamb
An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Gestures To Enhance Concept Retention In Chemistry Instruction, Jeffrey Lamb
All Theses
The emergence of embodied cognition as a theory of learning has placed new emphasis on the interdependent relationship between what the mind perceives and what the body experiences. Movement and objects in the physical environment take on significant roles in the process of learning within this view and the role of gesturing in cognition has become increasingly interesting. Significant research suggests that the physical process of gesturing is connected to how the mind processes information. Gesturing during the recall of information is a universally known phenomena and one that seems to aid in the process of recall. More recent findings …
Structural Health Monitoring Of Historic Masonry Monuments, Saurabh Prabhu
Structural Health Monitoring Of Historic Masonry Monuments, Saurabh Prabhu
All Theses
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a well-accepted diagnostic technique being used to evaluate modern structures. This method involves monitoring the vibration response of a structure to detect changes in its structural state. The primary intention of this thesis is to address two practical and technical difficulties encountered in deploying SHM on historic masonry monuments: (i) the selection of suitable low dimensional vibration response features that are highly sensitive to the presence and extent of damage, while having low sensitivity to extraneous noise and (ii) the selection of optimal sensor locations for efficient system identification applied to Gothic Cathedrals. Both of …
Modeling And Finite Element Alaysis Of Fluid Structure Interaction In A Wind Energy Harvester, Bargav Cheruku
Modeling And Finite Element Alaysis Of Fluid Structure Interaction In A Wind Energy Harvester, Bargav Cheruku
All Theses
An energy harvesting system inspired by musicplaying harmonicas was developed for microwind power generation. The energy harvester uses flow-induced self-sustained oscillations of a piezoelectric beam embedded within a chamber to generate electric power. While the power generation capability of the energy harvester has been demonstrated previously, there is a lack of understanding behind the basic physics of the driving mechanism responsible for the self-sustained oscillations. In addition, the performance of the nonlinear multi-physics system with strong fluid and structure coupling depends on many physical and design parameters. A systematic study on the effects of these parameters is necessary for the …

The DNS employs a real gas state equation, detailed chemistry, accurate property models, multicomponent, differential, and cross diffusion. The parallel simulations were conducted using eighth order central finite differencing in conjunction with a fourth order accurate Runge-Kutta time integration, on resolutions up to 135 million grid points, and used up to 2,016 processing cores. All simulations are for an ambient pressure of 100 atm and are …
Biomarkers In The Lower Huron Shale (Upper Devonain) As Indicators Of Organic Matter Source, Depositional Environment, And Thermal Maturity, John Kroon
All Theses
The Lower Huron Shale (Upper Devonian) is considered the largest shale gas reservoir in the Big Sandy Field in Kentucky and West Virginia. The potential for gas shales, such as the Lower Huron, to produce natural gas is a function of type, amount, and thermal maturation of their organic matter. Twenty-one Lower Huron Shale samples from eight wells located in eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia were analyzed for biomarker content to interpret biological source of organic matter, depositional environment conditions, and thermal maturity. The following biomarkers were identified: n-alkanes (C15 to C31), pristane (Pr), phytane (Ph), steranes (αααR, (αααS, …

Model-Based System Fault Diagnosis Utilizing Adaptive Threshold With Application To Automotive Electrical Systems, Ali Hashemi
All Theses
Recent advancement in the field of automotive industry is largely due to the addition of electrical and electronic equipment; some of the safety features in the vehicle and advanced driver assistance systems are examples of such equipment. Furthermore, safe operation of the vehicle is highly dependent on the electrical power generation and storage system (EPGS). Therefore, to ensure optimal operation of this system, a reliable diagnosis of the system is essential. However, as the complexity of the electrical systems has increased, the identification of a malfunction has become an increasingly difficult task to handle.
In the current work, a model-based …

Risks Posed To Drinking Water Aquifers Due To Leakage Of Dissolved Co2 In Improperly Abandoned Wellbores, Kirk Ellison
Risks Posed To Drinking Water Aquifers Due To Leakage Of Dissolved Co2 In Improperly Abandoned Wellbores, Kirk Ellison
All Theses
In order to ensure safe long-term storage of carbon dioxide in geologic formations, the risks posed by improperly abandoned wells must be understood and minimalized. In addition to supercritical and gaseous CO2, brine containing dissolved CO2 poses a leakage risk. CO2 dissolution in brine leads to denser brine and better long-term storage security, but its leakage risk is not zero. Under specific circumstances with formation overpressure or overlying aquifer drawdown, dissolved brine can flow up improperly abandoned wells where it can potentially enter and contaminate drinking water aquifers. The possibility that depressurization in the wellbore may cause CO2 exsolution from …
A Technique For Art Direction Of Physically Based Fire Simulation, Ashwin Bangalore
A Technique For Art Direction Of Physically Based Fire Simulation, Ashwin Bangalore
All Theses
This thesis presents an innovative way to art direct individual flames in a physically based fire simulation. Fire, due to its warm colors and constant movement, often becomes the main attraction to the viewer's eye in a scene. This technique provides control over this chaotic natural phenomenon at a microscopic level, enabling the artist to add character to flames and create highly stylized visuals. The fire system itself is a fully physics based two gas system with fuel gas and heat, with flames advected along convection currents generated by combustion. The technique is applied to examples of highly stylized flame …
A History-Dependent Nonwetting Phase Trapping Model For Multiphase Flow Characteristic Curves, Christopher Patterson
A History-Dependent Nonwetting Phase Trapping Model For Multiphase Flow Characteristic Curves, Christopher Patterson
All Theses
Characteristic curves used in numerical multiphase flow simulators describe relative permeability-saturation and capillary pressure-saturation relationships for flow simulations. Characteristic curves are typically non-hysteretic; meaning they are monotonic functions of saturation and are limited to a single value for residual saturation. Implications of residual saturation are important for environmental, petroleum, and geologic carbon sequestration modeling. However, hysteretic characteristic curves predict that trapped residual saturation depends on the local saturation history. The use of hysteretic characteristic curves is critical to predicting the residual saturation and ultimately the mobility of a nonwetting phase such as supercritical CO2 or a nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL). …
