Advancements In Finite Element Methods For Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Flows, Keith Galvin Aug 2013

Advancements In Finite Element Methods For Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Flows, Keith Galvin

All Dissertations

This dissertation studies two important problems in the mathematics of computational fluid dynamics. The first problem concerns the accurate and efficient simulation of incompressible, viscous Newtonian flows, described by the Navier-Stokes equations. A direct numerical simulation of these types of flows is, in most cases, not computationally feasible. Hence, the first half of this work studies two separate types of models designed to more accurately and efficient simulate these flows. The second half focuses on the defective boundary problem for non-Newtonian flows. Non-Newtonian flows are generally governed by more complex modeling equations, and the lack of standard Dirichlet or Neumann …

All Dissertations

This dissertation is a two-part manuscript highlighting the utilities of the hydrothermal method for exploring phase space, then extending that to the targeted growth of potentially useful materials. Chapters 3 - 5 discuss the synthesis of Group 4 fluorides and oxyfluorides. The study of this class of compounds in regards to their single crystal structures is a rich, but neglected area. Among the Group 4 metals, compounds based on Zr and Ti have been extensively studied, while those based on Th and Hf are sparsely reported and those based on Ce(IV) are nearly completely neglected. Using the hydrothermal method, many …

Mathematical Optimization For Engineering Design Problems, Brian Dandurand Aug 2013

Mathematical Optimization For Engineering Design Problems, Brian Dandurand

All Dissertations

Applications in engineering design and the material sciences motivate the development of optimization theory in a manner that additionally draws from other branches of mathematics including the functional, complex, and numerical analyses.
The first contribution, motivated by an automotive design application, extends multiobjective optimization theory under the assumption that the problem information is not available in its entirety to a single decision maker as traditionally assumed in the multiobjective optimization literature. Rather, the problem information and the design control are distributed among different decision makers. This requirement appears in the design of an automotive system whose subsystem components themselves correspond …

Instrumentation (sensors and processing) which is capable of recognizing the actions …

Robust Design Optimization: Ensuring Robustness Against Uncertainty In Structural Design, Zhifeng Liu Aug 2013

Robust Design Optimization: Ensuring Robustness Against Uncertainty In Structural Design, Zhifeng Liu

All Dissertations

In structural design, if robustness is overlooked in design process, the acquired design is likely to have large variation in its performance due to uncertainties. In that there is no design specification that explicitly considers the robustness against such uncertainties, this dissertation elucidates design methodologies for use in selecting the optimal design parameters to minimize the effect of the hard to reduce or irreducible uncertainties on structural performance, i.e., maximizing the robustness. However, due to limited resources, structural designs are also constrained by available resources and budget. Consequently, in that a tradeoff relationship exists between the robustness and cost (i.e. …

Miniature Concrete Prism Test - A New Test Method For Evaluating The Asr Potential Of Aggregates, The Effectiveness Of Asr Mitigation And The Job Mixture, Enamur Latifee

All Dissertations

Existing test methods to characterize ASR potential of aggregates and mitigation ability of supplementary cementing materials such as the Accelerated Mortar Bar Test (AMBT) and the Concrete Prism Test (CPT) are widely accepted in the industry. Although, the AMBT is a rapid test, the results from this test can be unreliable, particularly with certain types of aggregates. The CPT is considered as a more reliable test; however, the duration of this test method renders it impractical for routine usage in the industry to screen deleterious materials or inefficient ASR mitigation measures. This research presents a new test method-Miniature Concrete Prism …

Extreme Value Theory In Periodic Time Series, Zhiyun Gong Aug 2013

Extreme Value Theory In Periodic Time Series, Zhiyun Gong

All Dissertations

Extreme data points are important in environmental, financial, and insurance settings. In this work, we consider two topics on extremes from environmental data. Many environmental time series have a seasonal structure. The first part presents an approach to identify the rare events of such series based on time series residuals. Here, periodic autoregressive moving-average models are applied to describe the series. The methods justify the application of classical peaks over threshold methods to estimated versions of the one-step-ahead prediction errors of the series. Such methods enable the seasonal means, variances, and autocorrelations of the series to be taken into account. …

Electrospun Nanofiber Yarns For Nanofluidic Applications, Chen-Chih Tsai Aug 2013

Electrospun Nanofiber Yarns For Nanofluidic Applications, Chen-Chih Tsai

All Dissertations

This dissertation is centered on the development and characterization of electrospun nanofiber probes. These probes are envisioned to act like sponges, drawing up fluids from microcapillaries, small organisms, and, ideally, from a single cell. Thus, the probe performance significantly depends on the materials ability to readily absorb liquids. Electrospun nanofibers gained much attention in recent decades, and have been applied in biomedical, textile, filtration, and military applications. However, most nanofibers are produced in the form of randomly deposited non-woven fiber mats. Recently, different electrospinning setups have been proposed to control alignment of electrospun nanofibers. However, reproducibility of the mechanical and …

We have investigated the generation of magnetic fields associated with velocity shear between an unmagne-tized relativistic jet and an unmagnetized sheath plasma. We have examined the strong magnetic fields generated by ki-netic shear (Kelvin–Helmholtz) instabilities. Compared to the previous studies using counter-streaming performed by Alves et al. (2012), the structure of the kinetic Kelvin– Helmholtz instability (KKHI) of our jet-sheath configura-tion is slightly different, even for the global evolution of the strong transverse magnetic field. In our simulations the major components of growing modes are the electric field Ez, perpendicular to the flow boundary, and the magnetic field By, transverse …

A Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Eclipsing Short-Period Binary V505 Persei And The Origin Of The Lithium Dip, Patrick Baugh, Jeremy R. King, Constantine P. Deliyannis, Ann Merchant Boesgaard

Publications

As a test of rotationally-induced mixing causing the well-known Li dip in older mid-F dwarfs in the local Galactic disk, we utilize high-resolution and -S/N Keck/HIRES spectroscopy to measure the Li abundance in the components of the ∼1 Gyr, [Fe/H]= −0.15 eclipsing short-period binary V505 Per. We find A(Li) ∼ 2.7 ± 0.1 and 2.4 ± 0.2 in the Teff∼6500 and 6450K primary and sec-ondary components, respectively. Previous Teff determinations and uncertainties suggest that each component is located in the midst of the Li dip. If so, their A(Li) are ≥2–5 times larger than A(Li) detections and upper limits observed …

Continuous Development Of Schemes For Parallel Computing Of The Electrostatics In Biological Systems: Implementation In Delphi, Chuan Li, Marharyta Petukh, Lin Li, Emil Alexov

Publications

Due to the enormous importance of electrostatics in molecular biology, calculating the electrostatic potential and corresponding energies has become a standard computational approach for the study of biomolecules and nano-objects immersed in water and salt phase or other media. However, the electrostatics of large macromolecules and macromolecular complexes, including nano-objects, may not be obtainable via explicit methods and even the standard continuum electrostatics methods may not be applicable due to high computational time and memory requirements. Here, we report further development of the parallelization scheme reported in our previous work (J Comput Chem. 2012 Sep 15; 33(24):1960–6.) to include parallelization …

Cancer Missense Mutations Alter Binding Properties Of Proteins And Their Interaction Networks, Hafumi Nisha, Manoj Tyagi, Shaolei Teng, Benjamin A. Shoemaker, Kosuke Hashimoto, Emil Alexov, Stefan Wuchty, Anna R. Panchenko Jun 2013

Cancer Missense Mutations Alter Binding Properties Of Proteins And Their Interaction Networks, Hafumi Nisha, Manoj Tyagi, Shaolei Teng, Benjamin A. Shoemaker, Kosuke Hashimoto, Emil Alexov, Stefan Wuchty, Anna R. Panchenko

Publications

Many studies have shown that missense mutations might play an important role in carcinogenesis. However, the extent to which cancer mutations might affect biomolecular interactions remains unclear. Here, we map glioblastoma missense mutations on the human protein interactome, model the structures of affected protein complexes and decipher the effect of mutations on protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid and protein-ion binding interfaces. Although some missense mutations over-stabilize protein complexes, we found that the overall effect of mutations is destabilizing, mostly affecting the electrostatic component of binding energy. We also showed that mutations on interfaces resulted in more drastic changes of amino acid physico-chemical …

The Role Of Protonation States In Ligand-Receptor Recognition And Binding, Marharyta Petukh, Shannon Stefl, Emil Alexov May 2013

The Role Of Protonation States In Ligand-Receptor Recognition And Binding, Marharyta Petukh, Shannon Stefl, Emil Alexov

Publications

In this review we discuss the role of protonation states in receptor-ligand interactions, providing experimental evidences and computational predictions that complex formation may involve titratable groups with unusual pKa’s and that protonation states frequently change from unbound to bound states. These protonation changes result in proton uptake/release, which in turn causes the pHdependence of the binding. Indeed, experimental data strongly suggest that almost any binding is pH-dependent and to be correctly modeled, the protonation states must be properly assigned prior to and after the binding. One may accurately predict the protonation states when provided with the structures of the unbound …

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis Of Sound Transmission Performance Of Honeycomb Sandwich Structures, Xin Wang May 2013

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis Of Sound Transmission Performance Of Honeycomb Sandwich Structures, Xin Wang

All Theses

Due to the lighter weight of honeycomb structures compared with a cuboid of similar material, honeycomb is widely used in applications requiring a high stiffness to weight ratio. One important honeycomb meta-structure is sandwich composites designed with a honeycomb core between two thin panel layers. The geometry of the honeycomb is formed from periodically spaced, non-overlapping unit cells. An important advantage of cellular materials such as honeycomb is that vibration and acoustic properties can be changed simply by changing the unit cell geometry variables such as included angle, cell wall thickness and length, while keeping the overall dimensions of the …
