Adsorption Of Synthetic Organic Chemicals: A Comparison Of Superfine Powdered Activated Carbon With Powdered Activated Carbon, Semra Bakkaloglu
Adsorption Of Synthetic Organic Chemicals: A Comparison Of Superfine Powdered Activated Carbon With Powdered Activated Carbon, Semra Bakkaloglu
All Theses
In literature, manufacturer-supplied powdered activated carbon has been ground to produce submicron particles with mean diameter lower than 1µm for use as an adsorbent during water treatment. Superfine powdered activated carbon (SPAC) can be used for removal of natural organic matter as well as synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) from water. It has been suggested that SPAC has higher adsorption capacity than powdered activated carbon (PAC) due to larger external surface area and mesopore volume. Another advantage of SPAC over PAC is the faster uptake rate for both NOM and SOC during adsorption owing to small particle size. Therefore, understanding SPAC …

Over the past few years, there have been an increase in the development and improvement of circumvention tools like Tor and Psiphon. These tools provide an environment for citizens of oppressive regimes to access websites freely without fear of identification, these tools aid democracy activists and journalists in West Africa in using the Internet securely. A similar circumvention tool was developed by us. This tool circumvents DNS and IP address blocking/filtering, by leveraging technologies developed by criminal botnet enterprises. To improve and maintain the circumvention tool we developed, it is important to quantify the number and country of origin of …
Corl8: A System For Analyzing Diagnostic Measures In Wireless Sensor Networks, Loren Klingman
Corl8: A System For Analyzing Diagnostic Measures In Wireless Sensor Networks, Loren Klingman
All Theses
Due to an increasing demand to monitor the physical world, researchers are deploying wireless sensor networks more than ever before. These networks comprise a large number of sensors integrated with small, low-power wireless transceivers used to transmit data to a central processing and storage location. These devices are often deployed in harsh, volatile locations, which increases their failure rate and decreases the rate at which packets can be successfully transmitted. Existing sensor debugging tools, such as Sympathy and EmStar, rely on add-in network protocols to report status information, and to collectively diagnose network problems. Some protocols rely on a central …
Ear Contour Detection And Modeling Using Statistical Shape Models, Satish Ravindran
Ear Contour Detection And Modeling Using Statistical Shape Models, Satish Ravindran
All Theses
Ear detection is an actively growing area of research because of its applications in human head tracking and biometric recognition. In head tracking, it is used to augment face detectors and to perform pose estimation. In biometric systems, it is used both as an independent modality and in multi-modal biometric recognition. The ear shape is the preferred feature used to perform detection because of its unique structure in both 2D color images and 3D range images. Ear shape models have also been used in literature to perform ear detection, but at a cost of a loss in information about the …
Preliminary Evaluation Of Kenaf As A Structural Material, Andrew Sheldon
Preliminary Evaluation Of Kenaf As A Structural Material, Andrew Sheldon
All Theses
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is an annual fiber plant that is kin to cotton and okra and native to east-central Africa, though it is currently grown in numerous locations around the globe. The plant's apparent high strength and light weight along with its environmental and sustainability advantages makes it a good candidate for use in structural materials. The goal of this study was to design a kenaf product that resembled parallel strand lumber and required minimal processing of the kenaf. The mechanical properties of the two main components of kenaf, the bast fibers and the core, were evaluated using experimental …
A Fluidic Fiber Platform Modified For The Selective Extraction And On Fiber Fluorescence Detection Of Proteins And Nucleic Acids, Natasha Khan
All Theses
Solid phase extraction has become a popular tool for analytical method development as a sample preparation technique. Solid phase sorbents can generally extract analytes based on polarity or selectively based on highly specific interactions between the analyte and an immobilized surface molecule. Biomolecular recognition based solid phases utilize antibodies, nucleic acids, and proteins as a secondary affinity layer on a solid phase support for selective analyte extractions and have been used for sample preparation, purification, separations, bioassays, and molecular diagnostics. Polymer supports for solid phase extraction are desirable for their low cost, abundance, chemical inertness, and pH stability. This thesis …
Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Organically-Linked Polyoxometalates, Riyadh Alshammari
Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Organically-Linked Polyoxometalates, Riyadh Alshammari
All Theses
One of the thrust areas of our research deals with exploratory synthesis of new inorganic-organic hybrid materials for energy storage. It is well-known that relevant to the research described later in this thesis, inorganic-organic hybrid solids studied thus far are largely made of coordination complexes where the organic molecules are acting like a ligand to coordinate around metal cations. In this research, we will employ polyoxometalate (POM) anions as an inorganic building block to replace otherwise oppositely charged metal cations in hopes to synthesize extended hybrid frameworks with rich redox chemistry. POM clusters are made of aggregates of transition-metal (TM) …

Real-Time Particle Simulation And Motion Capture Interaction, Amanda Morland
All Theses
This thesis presents the design and development of a program that allows artists to explore and create visual effects from the interaction between a particle system and motion captured data. A spatial subdivision scheme was developed to ensure fast and efficient particle-mesh collisions, allowing the user to interact with the system as it runs. Motion captured data was applied to create different animation routines which include a tango electronica dance and a tribal magician choreography. The particle system was created to work in conjunction with these animations and developed to be as versatile as possible, allowing for a multitude of …
Gis-Based Suitability Modeling And Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis For Utility Scale Solar Plants In Four States In The Southeast Us, Kata Tisza
All Theses
Photovoltaic (PV) development shows significantly smaller growth in the Southeast U.S., than in the Southwest; which is mainly due to the low cost of fossil-fuel based energy production in the region and the lack of solar incentives. However, the Southeast has appropriate insolation conditions (4.0-6.0 KWh/m2/day) for photovoltaic deployment and in the past decade the region has experienced the highest population growth for the entire country. These factors, combined with new renewable energy portfolio policies, could create an opportunity for PV to provide some of the energy that will be required to sustain this growth. The goal of the study …
Inverse Problems Using Reduced Basis Method, Phil Gralla
Inverse Problems Using Reduced Basis Method, Phil Gralla
All Theses
Inverse Problems is a field of great interest for many applications, such as parameter identification and image reconstruction. The underlying models of inverse problems in many applications often involve Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). A Reduced Basis (RB) method for solving PDE based inverse problems is introduced in this thesis. The RB has been rigorously established as an efficient approach for solving PDEs in recent years. In this work, we investigate whether the RB method can be used as a regularization for solving ill-posed and nonlinear inverse problems using iterative methods. We rigorously analyze the RB method and prove convergence of …
An Examination Of Students’ Technology Apprehension, Communication Competence, And Achievement Emotions In Community College Developmental Education Courses, Sara Crocker
All Theses
Despite the infusion of information and communication technology into higher education, the effects of incorporating this technology in community college classrooms, particularly developmental courses, remains to be thoroughly studied. The demographic differences found in community colleges versus four-year institutions are stark and warrant their own focused investigation. The college experience is an emotion-laden one, especially from the position of an academically at-risk student. Experiencing high levels of technology apprehension could negatively affect a student’s achievement emotions. In exploring technology apprehension, self-perceived communication competence should be taken into account because of the communicative nature of the technology used in higher education. …
Design Of A High Temperature Subsurface Thermal Energy Storage System, Qi Zheng
Design Of A High Temperature Subsurface Thermal Energy Storage System, Qi Zheng
All Theses
Solar thermal energy is taking up increasing proportions of future power generation worldwide. Thermal energy storage technology is a key method for compensating for the inherent intermittency of solar resources and solving the time mismatch between solar energy supply and electricity demand. However, there is currently no cost-effective high-capacity compact storage technology available (Bakker et al., 2008). The goal of this work is to propose a high temperature subsurface thermal energy storage (HSTES) technology and demonstrate its potential energy storage capability by developing a solar-HSTES-electricity generation system. In this work, main elements of the proposed system and their related state-of-art …

Characterizing The Effect Of Suspended Carbon Nanotubes On The Bioavailablility Of Adsorbed Fluoranthene To P. Promelas, Erica N. Linard
All Theses
The introduction of carbon nanomaterials into the environment has increased exponentially in the last decade, causing environmental as well as health concerns. One concern is the interaction that such nanomaterials have with the biota in the aquatic ecosystem and the direct and indirect toxic effects that may result. Previous research has documented a positive influence of natural organic matter (NOM) on the stability of carbon nanotube (CNTs) suspensions in surface waters. Further, research has quantified the ability of these carbon nanomaterials to adsorb aquatic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Though both CNTs and PAHs can co-occur in wastewater …

This paper uses nonparametric methods and some new results on hypothesis testing with nonparametric efficiency estimators and applies these to analyze the effect of locally-available high performance computing (HPC) resources on universities efficiency in producing research and other outputs. We find that locally-available HPC resources enhance the technical efficiency of research output in Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Physics, and History, but not in Computer Science, Economics, nor English; we find mixed results for Biology. Out research results provide a critical first step in a quantitative economic model for investments in HPC.

Publications
Production of vanillin from natural green vanilla pods was carried out by enzyme-assisted extraction combined with pre-freezing and thawing. In the first step the green vanilla pods were pre-frozen and then thawed to destroy cellular compartmentation. In the second step pectinase from Aspergillus niger was used to hydrolyze the pectin between the glucovanillin substrate and β-glucosidase. Four main variables, including enzyme amount, reaction temperature, time and pH, which were of significance for the vanillin content were studied and a central composite design (CCD) based on the results of a single-factor tests was used. Response surface methodology based on CCD was …

Inquiry can be defined practically as “an active learning process in which students answer research questions through data analysis.”2 This simple definition of inquiry is based on the National Science Educational Standards and is easy for teachers to understand. The National Research Council (NRC) identifies the scientific practices that support inquiry and that students should be engaged in, including: question generation, experimental design, data analysis, creating explanations, argumentation, and communicating results.3 The investigations created encourage inquiry and require students to develop their scientific practices skills.

Owning And Using Scholarship: An Ip Handbook For Teachers And Researchers, Kevin L. Smith
Owning And Using Scholarship: An Ip Handbook For Teachers And Researchers, Kevin L. Smith
A repository of copyright educational resources for higher education
Copyright and other types of laws regulating intellectual property create an increasing concern for contemporary scholarship. The digital environment has created exciting new opportunities and possibilities for scholars to work and distribute their work. But these new opportunities also create issues that did not arise in the analog world. Owning and Using Scholarship: An IP Handbook for Teachers and Researchers attempts to demystify intellectual property, and especially copyright law, for academic authors and independent scholars who face these dilemmas. It also can serve as a comprehensive resource for librarians who are asked to assist with these new and challenging decisions.
