'There Is A School We Love In Dixie Land': The History Of Greenville High, Boyd Johnson Aug 2014

'There Is A School We Love In Dixie Land': The History Of Greenville High, Boyd Johnson

All Theses

The history of Greenville High School began in the Progressive Era and was built largely upon the progressive education ideas of that period. The entire history reflects much of the same philosophical underpinnings that brought about the genesis of the school. The ideals of the progressives and especially those of John Dewey, one of the premier progressives, are evident in the community activities, the sports program, the academic curricula, outstanding alumni and faculty, and the struggle for desegregation at GHS. Through an examination of yearbooks, syllabi, newspapers, the Wall of Fame at Greenville High School, and textbooks used at the …

Developing A Predictive Model Of Heart Wall Motion In Fluoroscopic Images, Christopher Hawkins Aug 2014

Developing A Predictive Model Of Heart Wall Motion In Fluoroscopic Images, Christopher Hawkins

All Theses

Image guided surgery (IGS) is an integral part of minimally invasive surgery. IGS combines pre- and perioperative images acquired from different imaging modalities to give the surgeon a more complete view of the internal organs. These modalities include computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and fluoroscopy, to name a few. Fluoroscopy is also known as video x-ray and is becoming increasingly popular in procedures around the heart. Unfortunately, this increase in fluoroscopy use also brings an increase in exposure to ionizing radiation for the patient and the surgeon. This radiation can lead to increased cancer risk and a number of other …

Quantile Regression For Climate Data, Dilhani Marasinghe Aug 2014

Quantile Regression For Climate Data, Dilhani Marasinghe

All Theses

Quantile regression is a developing statistical tool which is used to explain the relationship between response and predictor variables. This thesis describes two examples of climatology using quantile regression. Our main goal is to estimate derivatives of a conditional mean and/or conditional quantile function. We introduce a method to handle autocorrelation in the framework of quantile regression and used it with the temperature data. Also we explain some properties of the tornado data which is non-normally distributed. Even though quantile regression provides a more comprehensive view, when talking about residuals with the normality and the constant variance assumption, we would prefer …

The Effect Of Gender And Status Difference On Saturated Fat Content Of Entree Items Chosen By Elementary School-Aged Students, Annie Anderson Aug 2014

The Effect Of Gender And Status Difference On Saturated Fat Content Of Entree Items Chosen By Elementary School-Aged Students, Annie Anderson

All Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine participants in a National School Lunch Program (NSLP), and the effect of gender and/or participation in the NSLP on selection of high saturated fat content entrée items by the students. Nutrition information provided to parents often does not include a profile of the fats offered in school lunch items. This was true of this study's schools. However, new NSLP guidelines focus upon saturated and trans fat content in school lunches. The total kcal limit is less than 30% total fat, and saturated fat is less than or equal to 10% total kcal, …

Finite Element Beam Model For Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Akhilesh Surabhi Aug 2014

Finite Element Beam Model For Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Akhilesh Surabhi

All Theses

Piezoelectric energy harvesting devices convert mechanical energy to usable electrical energy, which can be used to power other electronic devices and sensors. Typical piezoelectric harvesters are unimorph cantilever composite beams, which have a single active piezoceramic layer and a passive substrate or a bimorph that has a passive substrate sandwiched between two piezoceramic layers. Power is captured across a coupled load resistor circuit in either a series or parallel connection. The mathematical modeling approaches for piezoelectric beam harvesters present in literature range from analytical distributed parameter modeling, to approximate distributed parameter, Rayleigh- Ritz global discretization or finite element local discretization. …

Acoustic Scattering And Radiation Response Of Circular Hexagonal And Auxetic Honeycomb Shell Structures, Vaibhav Iyer Aug 2014

Acoustic Scattering And Radiation Response Of Circular Hexagonal And Auxetic Honeycomb Shell Structures, Vaibhav Iyer

All Theses

Sandwich panels with honeycomb cores are used in many engineering applications because of their high strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation and sound transmission loss characteristics. Previous studies indicate that such sandwich structures with auxetic honeycomb cores (negative in-plane Poisson's ratio) can have a higher sound transmission loss compared to a regular hexagonal honeycomb core structure. In this study, sound scattering and acoustic radiation characteristics of sandwich structures with hexagonal and auxetic cores arranged in a circular pattern interacting with exterior acoustic domains of both air and water have been investigated using finite element analysis. A novel in-plane honeycomb geometry …

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Land Cover Change, Sedimentation And Water Quality In The Lake Issaqueena Watershed, South Carolina, Cassie Pilgrim Aug 2014

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Land Cover Change, Sedimentation And Water Quality In The Lake Issaqueena Watershed, South Carolina, Cassie Pilgrim

All Theses

Soil erosion and increased sediment yields within a watershed lead to impaired water quality, decreased availability of wildlife habitat and reduced recreational opportunities. While some sedimentation occurs naturally within a water system, most erosion processes are the result of anthropogenic activities across a landscape, namely changes in land use and land cover (LULC). This study was conducted to determine temporal and spatial sedimentation trends in the Lake Issaquena watershed using sonar logging equipment, geographic information systems (GIS) and limited hydrologic data from the Soil Conservation Service (1941 and 1949). Sediment deposition was analyzed in relation to several key factors that …

Potential Effects Of Geologic Storage Of Co2 On Surface Water And Shallow Groundwater, Shuangshuang Xie Aug 2014

Potential Effects Of Geologic Storage Of Co2 On Surface Water And Shallow Groundwater, Shuangshuang Xie

All Theses

ABSTRACT Storage of supercritical phase CO2 in deep saline aquifers is being considered to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and this process is expected to increase the pressure in these deep aquifers. One potential consequence of pressurization is an increase in the upward flux of saline water. Saline groundwater occurs naturally at shallow depths in many sedimentary basins, so an upward flux of solutes could degrade the quality of aquifers, and threaten aquatic ecosystems where groundwater discharge is important. The objective of this research is to evaluate the impacts associated with increasing the upward flux of saline water as …

Using The Bite Counter To Overcome The Effect Of Plate Size On Food Intake, Phillip Jasper Aug 2014

Using The Bite Counter To Overcome The Effect Of Plate Size On Food Intake, Phillip Jasper

All Theses

According to a recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, overweight and obesity have reached epidemic levels in the United States (Flegal et at., 2010, NHANES, 2010) There are many treatments for overweight and obesity, the most popular being behavioral interventions (Berkel et al., 2005). Self-monitoring is one of the most important factors of successful behavioral interventions (Baker & Kirschenbaum, 1993). The Bite Counter is a newly developed tool for weight loss that aids in the self-monitoring process (Dong et al., 2011). The purpose of the current study was to determine if bite count feedback and an instruction on the …

Comparison Of Bacterial Inactivation Efficiency And Disinfection Byproduct Formation From Different Disinfection Processes, Binbin Li Aug 2014

Comparison Of Bacterial Inactivation Efficiency And Disinfection Byproduct Formation From Different Disinfection Processes, Binbin Li

All Theses

Formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during Escherichia coli K12 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 inactivation under four disinfection processes, including chlorination, chloramination, photo-Fenton reaction, and TiO2/UV photocatalytic inactivation were examined. Factors of pH (5 or 8) and different disinfectant dosages were also investigated in order to balance the risks of DBP formation and bacterial cell viability in the four treatment processes. Chlorination had the fastest bacterial inactivation whereas chloramination, photo-Fenton, and TiO2/UV requiring longer contact times to achieve the same inactivation efficiency. In spite of the lag phase in the treatment processes, both photo-Fenton and TiO2/UV achieved 100% bacteria reduction after …

Air-Regulated Siphon Spillways: Performance, Modeling, Design, And Construction, Joshua Boatwright Aug 2014

Air-Regulated Siphon Spillways: Performance, Modeling, Design, And Construction, Joshua Boatwright

All Theses

1:Little data exists in the literature for quantification of siphon spillway performance. Proper design of an air regulated siphon spillway requires knowledge of required flow rates and minimum vent size. A set of small siphon spillways were constructed to measure flow rate and required vent size relative to physical characteristics including pipe diameter, length of pipe, and elevation head. Vent sizing was shown to be logarithmically proportional to flow rate. Results were used to develop predictive models for flow rate and vent sizing. Models were validated and refined through testing on a siphon spillway installed on a pond at LaMaster …

Development And Evaluation Of An Enrichment Culture For Reductive Dechlorination Of Tetrachloroethene Under Low Ph Conditions, Rui Xiao Aug 2014

Development And Evaluation Of An Enrichment Culture For Reductive Dechlorination Of Tetrachloroethene Under Low Ph Conditions, Rui Xiao

All Theses

Perchloroethene (PCE) is a pollutant of major environmental concern at hazardous waste sites worldwide. PCE and trichloroethene (TCE) are suspected carcinogens and are ranked 16th and 31st, respectively, on the Environmental Protection Agency's priority list for hazardous substances, developed under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. As a consequence of the widespread use of chlorinated solvents (including PCE and TCE) for dry cleaning, chemical feedstocks, metal degreasing and other purposes, chloroethenes are widely distributed in the environment. Many soils and groundwater throughout the world are contaminated by chloroethenes. Therefore, further improvements are needed in clean-up methods. Bioaugmentation has …

An Examination Of Radionuclide Transport In The Vadose Zone Using Field Lysimeters, Michael Witmer Aug 2014

An Examination Of Radionuclide Transport In The Vadose Zone Using Field Lysimeters, Michael Witmer

All Theses

Understanding how radionuclides interact in the subsurface is important for the remediation of contaminated sites, assessment of risk due to radioactive waste disposal, and designing new radioactive waste management strategies. The current understanding of the geochemical behavior of radionuclides in the subsurface and more specifically the vadose zone has been developed through reactive transport modeling supplemented by laboratory experiments. Interactions between radionuclides with the mineral particles and organic matter in the vadose zone can be very complex and while laboratory experiments produce valuable data, few controlled, intermediate scale transport studies have been performed. In order to accurately predict vadose zone …

The Design And Implementation Of An Over-The-Top Cloud-Based Vertical Handover Decision Service For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Adam Hodges Aug 2014

The Design And Implementation Of An Over-The-Top Cloud-Based Vertical Handover Decision Service For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Adam Hodges

All Theses

The widespread availability of heterogeneous wireless networks (hetnets) presents a resource allocation challenge to network operators and administrators. Overlapping network coverage should be utilized to its fullest extent, providing users with a fair share of bandwidth while maximizing the efficient use of the operator's resources. Currently, network selection occurs locally at the mobile device and does not take into account factors such as the state of other networks that might be available in the device's location. The local decision made by the device can often result in underutilization of network resources and a degraded user experience. This type of selfish …

Responses Of Target And Non-Target Species To Algaecide Exposures, Alyssa Calomeni Aug 2014

Responses Of Target And Non-Target Species To Algaecide Exposures, Alyssa Calomeni

All Theses

Laboratory experiments are often used to predict the responses of target and non-target species to chemical exposures in the field. In the first two experiments of this thesis, a rigorous evaluation of six algal viability measures was conducted. A definitive evaluation of the algal response measures was conducted using heat treatment to create known live: dead cell suspensions. Results from the response measures were compared to the known viability of the cell suspensions to determine their variance and accuracy. Copper-based algaecides were then used as a more realistic exposure to test the algal viability measures. When algal viability measures had …

Fatigue-Induced Failure In Horizontal-Axis Wind-Turbine (Hawt) Blades And Hawt Drivetrain Gears, Varun Chenna Aug 2014

Fatigue-Induced Failure In Horizontal-Axis Wind-Turbine (Hawt) Blades And Hawt Drivetrain Gears, Varun Chenna

All Theses

Wind energy is one of the most promising and the fastest growing installed alternative-energy production technologies. In fact, it is anticipated that by 2030, at least 20% of the U.S. energy needs will be met by various onshore and offshore wind-farms [a collection of wind-turbines (converters of wind energy into electrical energy) at the same location]. A majority of wind turbines nowadays fall into the class of the so-called Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs). Turbine blades and the gearbox are perhaps the most critical components/subsystems in the present designs of HAWTs. The combination of high failure rates (particularly those associated …

Design And Simulation Of A Nerve Tracer System For Vagotomy Surgery, Guneet Bedi Aug 2014

Design And Simulation Of A Nerve Tracer System For Vagotomy Surgery, Guneet Bedi

All Theses

The vagus nerve is one of the most important nerves in the human body. It is associated with a plethora of functions one of them being acid secretion inside the stomach to aid in digestion. The cerebrum part of the brain initiates an action potential that is propagated along the vagus nerve to the parietal cells that secrete acid. In some cases, the cerebrum over stimulates the parietal cells leading to excess acid secretion, more than is needed for the digestion process. This excess acid leads to the formation of open sores along the stomach lining called gastric/peptic ulcers. In …

Computational Bases For Hdiv, Alistair Bentley Aug 2014

Computational Bases For Hdiv, Alistair Bentley

All Theses

The \(H_{div}\) vector space arises in a number of mixed method formulations, particularly in fluid flow through a porous medium. First we present a Lagrangian computational basis for the Raviert-Thomas (\(RT\)) and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini (\(BDM\)) approximation subspaces of \(H_{div}\) in \(\mathbb{R}^{3}\). Second, we offer three solutions to a numerical problem that arises from the Piola mapping when \(RT\) and \(BDM\) elements are used in practice.

Problm Web Server: Protein And Membrane Placement And Orientation Package, Taylor Kimmett, Nicholas Smith, Shawn Witham, Marharyta Petukh, Subhra Sarkar, Emil Alexov

Publications

The 3D structures of membrane proteins are typically determined without the presence of a lipid bilayer. For the purpose of studying the role of membranes on the wild type characteristics of the corresponding protein, determining the position and orientation of transmembrane proteins within a membrane environment is highly desirable. Here we report a geometry-based approach to automatically insert a membrane protein with a known 3D structure into pregenerated lipid bilayer membranes with various dimensions and lipid compositions or into a pseudomembrane. The pseudomembrane is built using the Protein Nano-Object Integrator which generates a parallelepiped of user-specified dimensions made up of …

Should Expectations About The Rate Of New Antiretroviral Drug Development Impact The Timing Of Hiv Treatment Initiation And Expectations About Treatment Benefits?, Amin Khademi, R. Scott Braithwaite, Denis Saure, Andrew J. Schaefer, Kimberly Nucifora, Mark S. Roberts

Publications

Background: Many analyses of HIV treatment decisions assume a fixed formulary of HIV drugs. However, new drugs are approved nearly twice a year, and the rate of availability of new drugs may affect treatment decisions, particularly when to initiate antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Objectives: To determine the impact of considering the availability of new drugs on the optimal initiation criteria for ART and outcomes in patients with HIV/AIDS.

Methods: We enhanced a previously described simulation model of the optimal time to initiate ART to incorporate the rate of availability of new antiviral drugs. We assumed that the future rate of availability …

Publications

Background: Reduced exercise capacity is nearly universal among Fontan patients, though its etiology is not yet fully understood. While previous computational studies have attempted to model Fontan exercise, they did not fully account for global physiologic mechanisms nor directly compare results against clinical and physiologic data. Methods: In this study, we developed a protocol to simulate Fontan lower-body exercise using a closed-loop lumped-parameter model describing the entire circulation. We analyzed clinical exercise data from a cohort of Fontan patients, incorporated previous clinical findings from literature, quantified a comprehensive list of physiological changes during exercise, translated them into a computational model …

Whole exome sequencing in a family with suspected dominant Kufs disease identified a novel Presenilin 1 mutation p.Leu(381)Phe in three brothers who, along with their father, developed progressive dementia and motor deficits in their early 30s. All affected relatives had unusually rapid disease progression (on average 3.6 years from disease onset to death). In silico analysis of mutation p.Leu(381)Phe predicted more detrimental effects when compared to the common Presenilin 1 mutation p.Glu(280)Ala. Electron microscopy study of peripheral fibroblast cells of the proband showed lysosomal inclusions typical for Kufs disease. However his brain autopsy demonstrated typical changes of Alzheimer disease.
