Snyder-Robinson Syndrome (SRS) is a rare mental retardation disorder which is caused by the malfunctioning of an enzyme, the spermine synthase (SMS), which functions as a homo-dimer. The malfunctioning of SMS in SRS patients is associated with several identified missense mutations that occur away from the active site. This investigation deals with a particular SRS-causing mutation, the G56S mutation, which was shown computationally and experimentally to destabilize the SMS homo-dimer and thus to abolish SMS enzymatic activity. As a proof-of-concept, we explore the possibility to restore the enzymatic activity of the malfunctioning SMS mutant G56S by stabilizing the dimer through …

Publications

Automobile manufacturers have introduced plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to reduce fossil fuel consumption. This paper details three optimization strategies that can be utilized to further minimize energy consumption of PHEVs through an information exchange between PHEVs and infrastructure agents supported by the connected vehicle technology (CVT). While an earlier research by the authors focused on a freeway scenario, this study developed strategies for an urban scenario in which frequent ‘stop-and-go’ conditions exist. Three strategies were considered in this study based on different types of information availability using CVT; only signal timing information was available in Strategy One, only headway …

Effect Of Patellar Component Thickness On Patellar Kinematics And Patellofemoral Joint Function Following Total Knee Replacement, Xin Xie

All Dissertations

Nowadays, instances of anterior knee pain and patellar fracture are more and more widely considered as significant complications following total knee replacement (TKR). The inability to freely flex/extend the knee after surgery has a critical influence on patients’ daily activities, which is one of the most common mechanical indications for TKR revisions. An overtly thick or thin patellar component selected intraoperatively in TKR surgery may cause postoperative complications, including excessive quadriceps tendon force, patellofemoral joint reaction force, and joint pain in TKR patients during knee joint motion.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of varying …

Coastline habitats along the eastern seaboard of North America serve as prime locations for beachfront development and consumptive and non-consumptive recreational opportunities. Many of these areas are also globally important nesting and wintering areas for threatened and endangered shorebirds (primarily species belonging to the order Charadriiformes). Across the span of their hemispheric ranges, shorebirds face significant threats due to increases habitat loss, human disturbance, and illegal hunting practices. With coastline use increasing human-wildlife interactions, positive public input and interaction is needed to mitigate negative consequences to wildlife. Although many techniques have been employed to discourage beach users from practicing recreational …

Fourth Moment Approximation Of Instrinsic Mode Lifetimes In Solids, Yang Gao Aug 2014

Fourth Moment Approximation Of Instrinsic Mode Lifetimes In Solids, Yang Gao

All Dissertations

A new method (second moment approximation method) of calculating mode lifetimes of materials has been proposed by Dickel and Daw [14, 15]. The method was tested on an anharmonic lattice model, and it shows consistency with results from using traditional method (molecular dy-namics with Green-Kubo [2]) at high temperatures, but deviates at low temperatures. Based on this method, we developed the fourth moment approximation method, and tested it on various models from 1D anharmonic chain to the FCC cube with Lennard-Jones potential. Calculations showed that the fourth moment approximation method provides a fast and reliable scheme to calculate mode lifetimes …
