Tighter Bounds On Johnson Lindenstrauss Transforms, Fiona Knoll
Tighter Bounds On Johnson Lindenstrauss Transforms, Fiona Knoll
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Johnson and Lindenstrauss (1984) proved that any finite set of data in a high dimensional space can be projected into a low dimensional space with the Euclidean metric information of the set being preserved within any desired accuracy. Such dimension reduction plays a critical role in many applications with massive data. There has been extensive effort in the literature on how to find explicit constructions of Johnson-Lindenstrauss projections. In this poster, we show how algebraic codes over finite fields can be used for fast Johnson-Lindenstrauss projections of data in high dimensional Euclidean spaces.

Inquiry In Motion: Increasing The Science Achievement Of All Students By Improving Teacher Inquiry-Based Instruction, Jeff C. Marshall, Daniel M. Alston
Health, Education and Human Development Awards
Student performance in science classrooms has continued to falter throughout the United States. Even though proficiency rates on national tests such as National Assessment of Educational Progress are higher for Caucasian students than African Americans and Hispanics, all groups lack achieving desired proficiency rates. Therefore, much work is needed in our classrooms to achieve the new more rigorous performance expectations found in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This five year professional development study sought to link the involvement of teachers in a sustained intervention, designed to improve the quantity and quality of guided inquiry-based instruction in middle school science …
Stratification And Enumeration Of Boolean Functions By Canalizing Depth, Qijun He, Matthew Macauley
Stratification And Enumeration Of Boolean Functions By Canalizing Depth, Qijun He, Matthew Macauley
Publications
Boolean network models have gained popularity in computational systems biology over the last dozen years. Many of these networks use canalizing Boolean functions, which has led to increased interest in the study of these functions. The canalizing depth of a function describes how many canalizing variables can be recursively “picked off”, until a non-canalizing function remains. In this paper, we show how every Boolean function has a unique algebraic form involving extended monomial layers and a well-defined core polynomial. This generalizes recent work on the algebraic structure of nested canalizing functions, and it yields a stratification of all Boolean functions …

All Dissertations
In the last two decades nanotechnology market has undergone remarkable growth. Breakthroughs in nanomaterial synthesis increased diverse nanomaterials production and subsequently their application. Owing to its large surface to volume ratio and remarkable physical properties not seen in the bulk materials, nanoparticles are finding emerging use in industry and medicine. Hence, it is expectable that at some point these nanomaterials will end up released into the environment and interact with bio systems. The purpose of this dissertation is to elicit implications of nanomaterial transformation once it gets inside biological milieu.

Characterizing Equipment Cost, Fuel Use, And Emissions For Earthwork Activities, Phil Lewis, Yongwei Shan, Apif Hajji, Elizabeth Hazzard
The Professional Constructor
The objective of this paper is to examine the relationships between construction equipment costs, fuel use, and air pollutant emissions to make more informed decisions in construction planning and achieve more sustainable construction activity. This paper presents an estimating approach that combines both construction and environmental data to assess the relationships between equipment costs, fuel use, and emissions. To characterize these relationships, a case study is presented for a dozer performing a bulk excavation activity. Sensitivity analyses based on soil type, dozing distance, and engine horsepower rating are presented. Results indicate that there is little difference in the equipment total …

The purpose of this paper is to describe the relevance of a qualitative methodology called portraiture for science education. Portraiture is a method of inquiry that blends art and science by combining the empirical aspects of inquiry with the beauty and aesthetic properties. This method encompasses all aspects of a research study, including protocol, data collection and analysis, and presentation of findings. To examine the viability of portraiture as methodology for science education researchers, we provided two portraits of science teachers and their classrooms to illustrate how context played a significant role in teachers’ experiences and how it influenced their …

It is undeniable that religion provides a sense of purpose, ethical direction, and social belonging that most human beings for most of recorded history have found to be profoundly important. But it is equally undeniable that its supernatural metaphysics and dogmatic conservatism have retarded society’s progress in many ways and caused untold human suffering. An obvious question is thus: Is it possible to preserve the beneficial aspects of religion but excise the problematic ones?
Immanuel Kant fathered the postmodern age with his devastating critique of the possibility of human knowledge of the Ultimate. However, Kant himself was far from skeptical …

Operating Principles, Common Questions, And Performance Data For An Atmospheric Driven Atmos Clock, David Moline, John Wagner
Publications
The elegance of the Atmos clock and the curiosity of mankind in self-operational mechanical systems have propelled this time device into our collective desire for more knowledge. The search for a self-winding time piece, based on normal atmospheric fluctuations, was pursued for centuries by horologists with the well-known clock proposed by J. L. Reutter and commercialized by Jaeger LeCoultre. This clock has generated numerous discussions throughout the years as noted in past Bulletin articles and other correspondences within the time keeping community. In this paper, the operating principles of the Atmos clock will be reviewed using fundamental science and engineering …

Professional Development And Teacher Change: The Missing Leadership Link, Brooke A. Whitworth, Jennifer L. Chiu
Publications
Professional development in science education aims to support teacher learning with the ultimate goal of improving student achievement. A multitude of factors influence teacher change and the effectiveness of professional development. This review of the literature explores these factors and identifies school and district science leaders as a critical factor missing from current professional development models. School and district leaders play a significant role in the planning and implementation of professional development, as well as providing ongoing leadership to support teacher change. Considering this role, school district leaders are not just a contextual factor, but rather an integral part of …

Bromide Removal From Surface Waters By Silver Impregnated Activated Carbon, Chen Chen
Bromide Removal From Surface Waters By Silver Impregnated Activated Carbon, Chen Chen
All Theses
Bromide is a precursor of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during potable water treatment, because it causes the formation of brominated DBPs that are more cyto- and geno-toxic than their chlorinated analogues. Due to the potential health risks of DBPs, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has been imposing increasingly stringent regulations for controlling the DBPs. Therefore, removal of bromide ions from source waters becomes critical for controlling the DBPs formation. In my study, it was hypothesized that silver impregnated activated carbon (SIAC) can be a promising adsorbent for bromide removal from water. The main research objectives of this study were …
