Measuring The Potential Impact Of Combination Hiv Prevention In Sub-Saharan Africa, Amin Khademi, Sunanth Anand, David Potts

Publications

A public health approach to combination HIV prevention is advocated to contain the epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. We explore the implications of universal access to treatment along with HIV education scale-up in the region. We develop an HIV transmission model to investigate the impacts of universal access to treatment, as well as an analytical framework to estimate the effects of HIV education scale-up on the epidemic. We calibrate the model with data from South Africa and simulate the impacts of universal access to treatment along with HIV education scale-up on prevalence, incidence, and HIV-related deaths over a course of 15 …

Publications

An engineering workforce of sufficient size and quality is essential for addressing significant global challenges such as climate change, world hunger, and energy demand. Future generations of engineers will need to identify challenging issues and design innovative solutions. To prepare young people to solve big and increasingly global problems, researchers and educators need to understand how we can best educate young people to use engineering design thinking. In this paper, we explore virtual internships, online simulations of 21st-century engineering design practice, as one method for teaching engineering design thinking. To assess the engineering design thinking, we use epistemic network analysis …

Lessons Learned: Collaborative Symbiosis And Responsive Disciplinary Literacy Teaching, Phillip Wilder, Danielle Herro Aug 2015

Lessons Learned: Collaborative Symbiosis And Responsive Disciplinary Literacy Teaching, Phillip Wilder, Danielle Herro

Publications

This paper describes a case study of how a middle school literacy coach and a science teacher attempted to improve disciplinary literacy teaching in a sixth-grade science class. The collaborative inquiry exposed the disciplinary knowledge gap of the literacy coach (a former language arts teacher) and the science teacher's limited knowledge of literacy instruction. These shared disciplinary knowledge gaps necessitated the co-construction of collaborative practices to ameliorate the tension and improve disciplinary literacy instruction. Through a recognition of individual knowledge and the use of responsive disciplinary teaching, the participants created collaborative symbiosis. To improve disciplinary literacy teaching, schools should recognize …

Accuracy, Efficiency, And Parallelism In Network Target Coordination Optimization, Meng Xu Aug 2015

Accuracy, Efficiency, And Parallelism In Network Target Coordination Optimization, Meng Xu

All Dissertations

The optimal design task of complex engineering systems requires knowledge in various domains. It is thus often split into smaller parts and assigned to different design teams with specialized backgrounds. Decomposition based optimization is a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) technique that models and improves this process by partitioning the whole design optimization task into many manageable sub-problems. These sub-problems can be treated separately and a coordination strategy is employed to coordinate their couplings and drive their individual solutions to a consistent overall optimum. Many methods have been proposed in the literature, applying mathematical theories in nonlinear programming to decomposition based …

A Study Model Predictive Control For Spark Ignition Engine Management And Testing, Qilun Zhu Aug 2015

A Study Model Predictive Control For Spark Ignition Engine Management And Testing, Qilun Zhu

All Dissertations

Pressure to improve spark-ignition (SI) engine fuel economy has driven thedevelopment and integration of many control actuators, creating complex controlsystems. Integration of a high number of control actuators into traditional map basedcontrollers creates tremendous challenges since each actuator exponentially increasescalibration time and investment. Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategies have thepotential to better manage this high complexity since they provide near-optimal controlactions based on system models. This research work focuses on investigating somepractical issues of applying MPC with SI engine control and testing.Starting from one dimensional combustion phasing control using spark timing(SPKT), this dissertation discusses challenges of computing the optimal control …

Disaster Management Cycle-Based Integrated Humanitarian Supply Network Management, Kasin Ransikarbum Aug 2015

Disaster Management Cycle-Based Integrated Humanitarian Supply Network Management, Kasin Ransikarbum

All Dissertations

While logistics research recently has placed increased focus on disruptionmanagement, few studies have examined the response and recovery phases in post-disaster operations. We present a multiple-objective, integrated network optimizationmodel for making strategic decisions in the supply distribution and network restorationphases of humanitarian logistics operations. Our model provides an equity- or fairness-based solution for constrained capacity, budget, and resource problems in post-disasterlogistics management. We then generate efficient Pareto frontiers to understand the trade-off between the objectives of interest.Next, we present a goal programming-based multiple-objective integratedresponse and recovery model. The model prescribes fairness-based compromise solutionsfor user-desired goals, given limited capacity, budget, and …

An Optimization Approach For Energy Efficient Coordination Control Of Vehicles In Merging Highways, Jackeline Rios-Torres Aug 2015

An Optimization Approach For Energy Efficient Coordination Control Of Vehicles In Merging Highways, Jackeline Rios-Torres

All Dissertations

Environmental concerns along with stronger governmental regulations regarding automotive fuel-economy and greenhouse-gas emissions are contributing to the push for development of more sustainable transportation technologies. Furthermore, the widespread use of the automobile gives rise to other issues such as traffic congestion and increasing traffic accidents. Consequently, two main goals of new technologies are the reduction of vehicle fuel consumption and emissions and the reduction of traffic congestion. While an extensive list of published work addresses the problem of fuel consumption reduction by optimizing the vehicle powertrain operations, particularly in the case of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), approaches like eco-driving and …

Re-Establishing The Theoretical Foundations Of A Truncated Normal Distribution: Standardization Statistical Inference, And Convolution, Jinho Cha Aug 2015

Re-Establishing The Theoretical Foundations Of A Truncated Normal Distribution: Standardization Statistical Inference, And Convolution, Jinho Cha

All Dissertations

There are special situations where specification limits on a process are implemented externally, and the product is typically reworked or scrapped if its performance does not fall in the range. As such, the actual distribution after inspection is truncated. Despite the practical importance of the role of a truncated distribution, there has been little work on the theoretical foundation of standardization, inference theory, and convolution. The objective of this research is three-fold. First, we derive a standard truncated normal distribution and develop its cumulative probability table by standardizing a truncated normal distribution as a set of guidelines for engineers and …

Design Of Cab Suspensions And Semi-Active Seat Damping Control Strategies For Tractor Semi-Trailers, Judhajit Roy Aug 2015

Design Of Cab Suspensions And Semi-Active Seat Damping Control Strategies For Tractor Semi-Trailers, Judhajit Roy

All Dissertations

This thesis uses a high fidelity vertical plane ride model of the tractor semi-trailer to study the effect of different cab design configurations and semi-active seat damper control strategies on the driver’s ride comfort.

The secondary suspensions of a tractor have been an area of particular interest because of the considerable ride comfort improvements they provide. A gap exists in the current engineering domain of an easily configurable high fidelity low computational cost simulation tool to analyze the ride of a tractor semi-trailer. A 15 degree of freedom model of the tractor semi-trailer was used to develop a simulation tool …

Manipulation Of The Electrical Double Layer For Control And Sensing In A Solid State Nanopore, Samuel L. Bearden Aug 2015

Manipulation Of The Electrical Double Layer For Control And Sensing In A Solid State Nanopore, Samuel L. Bearden

All Dissertations

Nanopores have been explored with the goal of achieving non-functionalized, sub-molecular sensors, primarily with the purpose of producing fast, low-cost DNA sequencers. Because of the nanoscale volume within the nanopore structure, it is possible to isolate individual molecular and sub-molecular analytes. Nanopore DNA sequencing has remained elusive due to high noise levels and the challenge of obtaining single-nucleotide resolution. However, the complete electrical double layer within the nanopore is a key feature of fluid-nanopore interaction and has been neglected in previous studies. By exploring interactions with the electrical double layer in various nanopore systems, we characterize the material, electrical, and …

Epistemic Cognition During Problem Solving, Courtney June Faber Aug 2015

Epistemic Cognition During Problem Solving, Courtney June Faber

All Dissertations

Students’ beliefs about knowledge and knowing (personal epistemologies) have been shown to in-fluence various aspects of learning including, self-regulated learning, metacognition, and problem solving achievement (Bromme, Pieschl, & Stahl, 2009; Muis & Franco, 2009b, 2009a). Additionally, these beliefs have been shown to be discipline and context specific (Hofer, 2006; Hofer & Pintrich, 1997; Liu, 2011; Chinn, Buckland, & Samarapungavan, 2011). Multiple studies have investigated students’ personal epis-temologies across disciplines and how these beliefs influence aspects of learning; however, little work has investigated the connections between students’ personal epistemologies and the processes they utilize during problem solving. Through a three phase …

Dynamic Pricing For Competing Sellers, Liu Zhu Aug 2015

Dynamic Pricing For Competing Sellers, Liu Zhu

All Theses

To optimize profit, pricing is of great importance for each company, especially when competitors exist. The optimal pricing strategy we are interested in is to achieve Nash equilibrium (NE) to prevent malignant competition. In this work, we study dynamic pricing for a duopoly with two competing sellers, each of which sells one product, using a simple linear model which incorporates the competition effect. Motivated from the modified pricing policy constructed in Liu and Cooper [12], we propose a policy, referred to as randomized certainty equivalent pricing (RCEP) policy, under which each seller applies certainty equivalent pricing (CEP) policy for most …

Acoustic Scattering Response Of Hierarchic Honeycomb Structures For Cylindrical And Spherical Structures, Arun Mor Aug 2015

Acoustic Scattering Response Of Hierarchic Honeycomb Structures For Cylindrical And Spherical Structures, Arun Mor

All Theses

Sandwich panels with honeycomb core are often employed in structures for improved mechanical properties with lightweight. Honeycombs are defined by non-overlapping and periodic unit cells. Most research conducted on these sandwich panels focuses on stiffness and strength properties. The acoustic aspect of these panels has been focused on sound transmission loss. For acoustics, previous studies used effective honeycomb orthotropic elastic moduli based on Cartesian unit cell geometry to model the core as a homogeneous structure. While efficient, this modeling approach loses accuracy at higher frequencies. Furthermore, when used for curved panels, the effective moduli are only approximate. In this work, …

Thresholding Of Statistical Maps In Functional Neuroimaging Via Independent Filtering, Jaqueline Kwiasowski Aug 2015

Thresholding Of Statistical Maps In Functional Neuroimaging Via Independent Filtering, Jaqueline Kwiasowski

All Theses

The high dimension of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data causes problems in finding effective thresholds for voxelwise test statistics. Due to the enormous number of voxels, adjustment for multiple testing is necessary. But such an adjustment can lead to low statistical power. It has been shown that filtering the test statistics to reduce the number of tests being performed potentially increases the number of discoveries. However, some filter-test combinations can result in loss of control over the false discovery rate. We present an independent filtering approach which avoids this issue. Independent filtering uses filter-test combinations such that the filter …

Analysis And An Application Of Rf Interferometer, Yongzhi Shao Aug 2015

Analysis And An Application Of Rf Interferometer, Yongzhi Shao

All Theses

The thesis investigates additive RF interferometer sensing technique, which is highly sensitive compared to other RF sensing methods. First, mathematical descriptions are given to illustrate how the RF interferometer works. Then an analysis of single particle passing over a coplanar waveguide in carrier liquid is presented, which poses as a difficulty to simulation software. The analysis is combined with interferometer mathematical equations and validated by a particle measurement in an interferometer. The interferometer sensitivity is enhanced by incorporating filters as sensing devices and functionally expanded by using the reflection coefficients. In the end, an application of gas measurement with the …

The Partially Rechargeable Electric Vehicle Routing Problem With Time Windows And Capacitated Charging Stations, Navid Matin Moghaddam Aug 2015

The Partially Rechargeable Electric Vehicle Routing Problem With Time Windows And Capacitated Charging Stations, Navid Matin Moghaddam

All Theses

Electric vehicles are potentially beneficial for both the environment and an organization's bottom line. These benefits include, but are not limited to, reduced fuel costs, government tax incentives, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and the ability to promote a company's "green" image. In order to decide whether or not to convert or purchase electric trucks and install charging facilities, decision makers need to consider many factors including onboard battery capacity, delivery or service assignments, scheduling and routes, as well as weather and traffic conditions in a well-defined modeling framework. We develop a model to solve the partially rechargeable electric vehicle routing …

Self-Adapting Parallel Framework For Long-Term Object Tracking, Salim Mohammed Ali Aug 2015

Self-Adapting Parallel Framework For Long-Term Object Tracking, Salim Mohammed Ali

All Theses

Object tracking is a crucial field in computer vision that has many uses in human-computer interaction, security and surveillance, video communication and compression, augmented reality, traffic control, etc. Many implementations are introduced in practice, and yet recent methods emphasize on tracking objects adaptively by learning the object’s perspectives and rediscovering it when it becomes untraceable, so that object’s absence problem (in case of occlusion, cluttering or blurring) is resolved. Most of these algorithms have high computational burden on the computational units and need powerful CPUs to attain real-time tracking and high bitrate video processing. These computational units may handle no …

Nonparametric Regression In Natural Exponential Families: A Simulation Study, Yijun Chen Aug 2015

Nonparametric Regression In Natural Exponential Families: A Simulation Study, Yijun Chen

All Theses

Nonparametric regression has been particularly well developed. Base on the asymptotic equivalence theory, there are some procedures that can turn more complicated nonparametric estimation problems into a standard nonparametric regression, especially in natural exponential families. This procedure is described in detail with a wavelet thresholding estimator for Gaussian nonparametric regression and simulation study shed light on the behavior of this method under different sample sizes and parameterizations of exponential distribution. The resulting estimators have a high degree of adaptivity in [2].

Development And Validation Of An Optically-Based Strain Measuring Orthopaedic Screw For Fracture Fixation Implants, Nakul Ravikumar Aug 2015

Development And Validation Of An Optically-Based Strain Measuring Orthopaedic Screw For Fracture Fixation Implants, Nakul Ravikumar

All Theses

In the USA over 28 million musculoskeletal injuries are treated annually, including 2 million fracture fixation surgeries (about 0.5% of the population).[1] Treatment of large osseous defects use allografts which have failure rates of up to 25%, and complication rates as high as 30-60%.[2] Fracture fixation usually involves mechanical fixation with rods, plates and/or screws which repair slowly and are susceptible to infection. Implant infection and loosening are serious concerns, but can currently only be measured through expensive instrumented implants, biopsy culture, or radiographs. However, none of these directly quantify implant loading and stability. There is therefore a need for …

Quantum-Mechanical Calculations Of Actinyl And Europium Sorption To Graphene Oxide, Edward Helvenston Aug 2015

Quantum-Mechanical Calculations Of Actinyl And Europium Sorption To Graphene Oxide, Edward Helvenston

All Theses

Quantum-mechanical calculations were performed to model the interactions of U(VI), Np(V), Pu(VI), and Eu(III) with carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups of graphene oxide (GO). Models were created for sorption to a single sheet of GO. For U(VI) and Eu(III), models were also created for sorption to two sheets to evaluate the possibility of cation-induced GO aggregation via cation cross-linking of GO sheets. The quantum-mechanical calculations were used to characterize the sorption reactions in terms of energetics and vibrational peak shifts. The calculations performed used Gaussian09 with the B3LYP hybrid functional. Sorption was seen as favorable for all cations considered; the …

Sensitivity And Precision Analysis Of The Graph Complexity Connectivity Method, Sudarshan Sridhar Aug 2015

Sensitivity And Precision Analysis Of The Graph Complexity Connectivity Method, Sudarshan Sridhar

All Theses

In the Graph Complexity Connectivity Method (GCCM), twenty nine complexity metrics applied against engineering design graphs are used to create surrogate prediction models of engineering design representations (assembly models and function structures) for given product performance values (assembly time and market value). The performance of these prediction models has been previously assessed solely based on accuracy. In this thesis, the predictive precision of the surrogate models is evaluated in order to assess the GCCM's ability to generate consistent results under the same conditions. The Assembly Model - Assembly Time (AM-AT) prediction model performed the best in terms of both accuracy …

Biogeochemical Processes In Hydrosoil Of Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland Treatment Systems Designed For Treatment Of Selenium, Christina Blaszkiewicz Aug 2015

Biogeochemical Processes In Hydrosoil Of Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland Treatment Systems Designed For Treatment Of Selenium, Christina Blaszkiewicz

All Theses

Two pilot-scale wetland treatment system cells (nutrient amended and unamended) were designed and constructed to reduce aqueous Se concentrations in simulated energy-derived water. Specific objectives of this study were: (i) measure and correlate hydrosoil conditions with Se concentrations vertically through the hydrosoil; (ii) investigate Se-accumulating biogeochemical processes (dissimilatory Se reduction and sorption) operating in the hydrosoil; and (iii) evaluate the effect of a nutrient amendment on hydrosoil conditions, Se accumulation, and Se-sequestering biogeochemical processes in the hydrosoil. Se accumulation (i.e. total Se concentration) and hydrosoil conditions were measured with depth in the hydrosoil. Se-sequestering biogeochemical processes were investigated by counting …

Preference Of Consumers Toward Non-Distorted Graphics On Full-Body Shrink Sleeve Labels, Nathan Bailey Aug 2015

Preference Of Consumers Toward Non-Distorted Graphics On Full-Body Shrink Sleeve Labels, Nathan Bailey

All Theses

Past research has indicated that shrink sleeves can lead to higher product trial rates, better long-term sales, and greater likelihood of brand loyalty. A pilot study and a primary experiment were conducted to investigate the significance of distortion and the ability of the Human Visual System (HVS) to recognize it in packaging design. Distortion works primarily in shrink film on which an image is printed, so these studies dealt only with reductive distortion. The pilot study aimed to identify the absolute threshold, or Just-Noticeable-Difference (JND) for a change from no stimulus, for simple polygons. The primary experiment focused on graphic …

Characterization Of Printed Planar Electromagnetic Coils Using Digital Extrusion And Roll-To-Roll Flexographic Processes, Scott Rickard Aug 2015

Characterization Of Printed Planar Electromagnetic Coils Using Digital Extrusion And Roll-To-Roll Flexographic Processes, Scott Rickard

All Theses

Electromagnets are a crucial component in a wide range of more complex electrical devices due to their ability to turn electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. The trend for electronics becoming smaller and lighter has led to increased interest in using flat, planar electromagnetic coils, which have been shown to perform better at scaled down sizes. The two-dimensional geometry of a planar electromagnetic coil yields itself to be produced by a roll-to-roll additive manufacturing process. The emergence of the printed electronics field, which uses traditional printing processes to pattern functional inks, has led to new methods of mass-producing …
