The Historic South Carolina Rainfall And Major Floods Of October 1-5, 2015, Hope Mizzell, Mark Malsick, Wes Tyler

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

A record setting and historic rainfall event occurred October 1-5, 2015, producing widespread and significant flooding across much of South Carolina. The rainfall resulted from several atmospheric and hydrometeorological factors. The record rainfall triggered flash floods and riverine flooding that resulted in emergency evacuations, travel disruptions, personal property damage, business losses, bridge collapses, dam failures and tragic loss of life. Precipitation records were broken from the midlands to the coast, with totals ranging from 10 to over 26 inches of rain. Sixteen National Weather Service Cooperative Weather Stations set new 24-hour rainfall records for October. The amount of rainfall during …

Towards Deadline Guaranteed Cloud Storage Services, Guoxin Liu, Haiying Shen, Lei Yu

Publications

More and more organizations move their data and workload to commercial cloud storage systems. However, the multiplexing and sharing of the resources in a cloud storage system present unpredictable data access latency to tenants, which may make online data-intensive applications unable to satisfy their deadline requirements. Thus, it is important for cloud storage systems to provide deadline guaranteed services. In this paper, to meet a current form of service level objective (SLO) that constrains the percentage of each tenant's data access requests failing to meet its required deadline below a given threshold, we build a mathematical model to derive the …

Delphiforce, A Tool For Electrostatic Force Calculations: Applications To Macromolecular Binding, Lin Li, Arghya Chakravorty, Emil Alexov

Publications

Long-range electrostatic forces play an important role in molecular biology, particularly in macromolecular interactions. However, calculating the electrostatic forces for irregularly shaped molecules immersed in water is a difficult task. Here, we report a new tool, DelPhiForce, which is a tool in the DelPhi package that calculates and visualizes the electrostatic forces in biomolecular systems. In parallel, the DelPhi algorithm for modeling electrostatic potential at user-defined positions has been enhanced to include triquadratic and tricubic interpolation methods. The tricubic interpolation method has been tested against analytical solutions and it has been demonstrated that the corresponding errors are negligibly small at …

A Formative Experiment To Align Middle-School History Instruction With Literacy Goals, Jamie Colwell, David Reinking

Publications

Background/Context

Recent curricular trends based on new standards emphasize the centrality of reading and studying texts in history instruction. That trend suggests a closer alignment between middle-school history instruction and goals for developing literacy. Yet potential obstacles identified in the literature, particularly a teacher's stance toward teaching history, imply challenges to instantiating that alignment. Relatively little research has addressed how relevant conceptual positions such as disciplinary literacy might be realized in authentic practice.

Purpose/Objective

The objective was to investigate how middle-school history instruction could be transformed to align with the literacy goals addressed in new curricular standards and to better …

Studying The Use Of Hidden Markov Models In The Detection And Classification Of Eeg Epileptiform Transients Using Lpc Features, Kartikeya Shrikant Bagalore

All Theses

The process of identifying the presence of an AEP (Abnormal Epileptiform Paroxysmal) in a subject's EEG, normally done by neurologist experts, is a particularly long one and involves considerable financial expenses. This research aims to pave an automatic method of detecting and classifying streams of EEGs as to whether or not it has any AEPs present in it. This is a two step process, where step 1 is the classification problem and step 2 is the detection problem. There are many different activities on the EEGs, and the classification task helps to identify which of these activities are AEPs. So, …

Fabricating Suspended Carbon Structures Using Su-8 Photolithography, Emanuele Giogli Dec 2016

Fabricating Suspended Carbon Structures Using Su-8 Photolithography, Emanuele Giogli

All Theses

The phenomenon of T-topping has been deemed as an imperfection of the SU-8 photolithography process, due to light diffraction, overexposure of the SU-8, and other process parameters. The first objective of this work is to demonstrate that T-topping can be used as a microfabrication resource to produce suspended structures between photo-patterned high aspect ratio SU-8 posts, as precursors for carbon wires (width>1µm) and bridges (width>1µm). Such carbon structures could be used in a number of applications, such as the fabrication of nanowire based biosensors for the medical and food industry. The second objective is to develop a model …

A Performance Focused, Development Friendly And Model Aided Parallelization Strategy For Scientific Applications, Anagha S. Joshi

All Theses

The amelioration of high performance computing platforms has provided unprecedented computing power with the evolution of multi-core CPUs, massively parallel architectures such as General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) and Many Integrated Core (MIC) architectures such as Intel's Xeon phi coprocessor. However, it is a great challenge to leverage capabilities of such advanced supercomputing hardware, as it requires efficient and effective parallelization of scientific applications. This task is difficult mainly due to complexity of scientific algorithms coupled with the variety of available hardware and disparate programming models. To address the aforementioned challenges, this thesis presents a parallelization strategy to accelerate …

Boundary Controllability For One-Dimensional Wave And Heat Equations With Potential, Andrew Walton Green Dec 2016

Boundary Controllability For One-Dimensional Wave And Heat Equations With Potential, Andrew Walton Green

All Theses

In this thesis we investigate the boundary controllability of the wave and heat equa-tions with bounded potential in one dimension. This is done by way of the observability inequality. For the wave equation, we use the Hilbert Uniqueness Method of J. L. Lions to show the observability inequality is sufficient for exact controllability. Observability is shown by the multiplier method when there is no potential and a special Exchange of Vari-ables technique for when potential is present. Due to limitiations of this method we also use a Carleman Estimate which can be extended to higher dimensions. For the heat equation, …

Uniform Micro-Patterning Of An Arbitrary Surface, Viraj Rajendra Kulkarni Dec 2016

Uniform Micro-Patterning Of An Arbitrary Surface, Viraj Rajendra Kulkarni

All Theses

According to the literature, creating specific micro-level patterns on some surfaces can significantly reduce friction. To this effect, a method is presented to create a regular pattern of micro-level indentations on any irregular surface. Creating a uniform pattern on a regular surface is possible using commercial CAD software, where regular surface is the surface obtained by extrusion or revolution of a 2D sketch along any curve. But, it is complicated and often incorrect for irregular surfaces. The thesis presents the approach followed to create parameterized regular patterns on arbitrary surfaces. Three different algorithms are presented, each achieving a progressively increased …

Investigating Materials That Promote New Organic Methodology And Remediation Of Volatile Organic Compounds, Mckenzie Louise Campbell Dec 2016

Investigating Materials That Promote New Organic Methodology And Remediation Of Volatile Organic Compounds, Mckenzie Louise Campbell

All Dissertations

The need for environmentally safe reagents for the promotion of organic transformations is critical in order to reduce hazardous waste and byproducts associated with industrial-scale chemical processes. We have developed two practical methods that obviate the need for harsh oxidative and toxic brominating reagents in electrophilic halogenation reactions.

In our hands, a catalytic loading of the inexpensive, commercially available V2O5 (~$0.25/g) promotes the bromolactonization of a series of substituted alkenoic acids in isolated yields up to 97% by means of the in situ generation of bromenium (Br+) from bromide (Br−) at room temperature. This process obviates the need for molecular …

Simulation Of Reverse Osmosis And Osmotically Driven Membrane Processes, Peng Xie Dec 2016

Simulation Of Reverse Osmosis And Osmotically Driven Membrane Processes, Peng Xie

All Dissertations

To address the increasingly severe global water shortage and pollution problem, reverse osmosis (RO) has been widely used because of its ability to produce high quality water. Meanwhile, related technologies have been developed, called osmotically driven membrane processes (ODMPs). These include forward osmosis (FO), which has potential for wastewater purification and desalination, and pressure retarded osmosis (PRO), which has the capacity to produce energy. The main problems associated with RO and ODMPs are concentration polarization and membrane fouling which deteriorate the quality and quantity of the permeate flux and increase the operating cost of the system. The task of this …

The Coronary Circulation In An In Vitro Multi-Scale Model Of The Stage 1 Norwood Procedure, Lauren Elizabeth Carter

All Theses

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart disease where the left ventricle and ascending aorta are underdeveloped. The first of three palliative surgeries for this malformation is the Norwood procedure. In this surgery, an opening is made between the left and right atrium so that all blood can flow into the right ventricle (RV). A reconstructed aorta is anastomosed (connected) to the RV so that the RV can pump oxygenated blood to the body (the systemic circulation). To divert part of the systemic blood flow to the pulmonary circulation, the modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt (mBTS) is connected from the …

Estimation Of Annual Average Daily Traffic (Aadt) And Missing Hourly Volume Using Artificial Intelligence, Sababa Islam Dec 2016

Estimation Of Annual Average Daily Traffic (Aadt) And Missing Hourly Volume Using Artificial Intelligence, Sababa Islam

All Theses

Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) is one of the most important traffic parameters used in transportation engineering analysis. Moreover, each state Department of Transportation (DOT) must report the AADT data to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) annually as part of the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) requirements. For this reason, state DOTs continually collect AADT data via permanent count stations and short-term counts. In South Carolina, only interstates and primary routes are equipped with permanent count stations. For the majority of the secondary routes, AADT data are estimated based on short-term counts or are simply guesstimated based on their functional classifications. …

A Semi-Analytical Unit Cell Synthesis Method For Design Of Meta-Materials With Targeted Nonlinear Deformation Response, Shanyun Gao Dec 2016

A Semi-Analytical Unit Cell Synthesis Method For Design Of Meta-Materials With Targeted Nonlinear Deformation Response, Shanyun Gao

All Theses

A Unit Cell Synthesis Method was developed recently for designing meta-materials from unit cell level to achieve prescribed nonlinear deformation response. The method starts with a process of selecting and combining a set of elemental functional geometries (EFG) and elemental structural geometries (ESG) to form the unit cell structure. A subsequent size optimization is performed to obtain an optimal design which provides the targeted nonlinear deformation behavior. While the method is proven effective in producing feasible meta-material designs, the design and optimization of the unit cells relies heavily on nonlinear finite element analysis, which makes the overall process computationally intensive …

Consistent Asymptotic Homogenization Method For Lattice Structures Based On The Virtual Power Principle, David Bracho Dec 2016

Consistent Asymptotic Homogenization Method For Lattice Structures Based On The Virtual Power Principle, David Bracho

All Theses

The properties of mechanical meta-materials in the form of a periodic lattice have drawnthe attention of researchers in the area of material design. Computational methods for solvingelasticity problems that involve a large number of repeating structures, such as the ones presentin lattice materials, is often impractical since it needs a considerable amount of computationalresources. Homogenization methods aim to facilitate the modeling of lattice materials by definingequivalent effective properties. Various approaches can be found in the literature, but few followa consistent methodology applicable to any lattice geometry. In the present work, the asymptotichomogenization method developed by Caillerie and lated by Dos …
