A Carleman Type Estimate For The Mindlin-Timoshenko Plate Model, Jason A. Kurz May 2017

A Carleman Type Estimate For The Mindlin-Timoshenko Plate Model, Jason A. Kurz

All Theses

This thesis focuses on results concerning providing a Carleman type estimate for the Mindlin-Timoshenko plate equations. The main approach is to provide an estimate for each of the three equations in the model then present these estimates in totality as a singular Carleman estimate for the entire model. The initial equation in the model is a simple two dimensional hyperbolic partial differential equation known as the wave equation. Prior research has been done for this type of equation and will be applied to provide the Carleman estimate for the first equation in the model. The estimate for the second and …

A Well-Designed, Tree-Based, Generic Map Component To Challenge The Progress Towards Automated Verification, Nicodemus M.J. Mbwambo May 2017

A Well-Designed, Tree-Based, Generic Map Component To Challenge The Progress Towards Automated Verification, Nicodemus M.J. Mbwambo

All Theses

This thesis presents a non-trivial candidate software component assembly that presents an opportunity and a challenge to the progress towards automated verification. It presents an opportunity because the data abstraction implementation can serve as a proof of concept of the idea that well-designed and well-annotated software components with mathematical specifications and well-engineered implementation(s) lead to generated verification conditions (VCs) of correctness that are "obvious" to prove. It presents a challenge because verification of the implementation involves multiple theories and the use of a tree concept that is based on a general tree theory for which there are no special-purpose solvers. …

Improvements To A Two-Dimensional Model For Pneumatic And Non-Pneumatic Tires, Erin Leigh Mcpillan May 2017

Improvements To A Two-Dimensional Model For Pneumatic And Non-Pneumatic Tires, Erin Leigh Mcpillan

All Theses

This thesis is a continuation of the model development work by Amir Gasmi in 2011 and Tim Lewis in 2012. The model was originally developed by Gasmi in 2011 to represent non-pneumatic tires. It centers on a thin, circular beam in contact with a rigid surface, which represents the belt package of the non-pneumatic tire. The beam is connected to a wheel with spokes. Gasmi developed a method to approximate these discrete spokes with a continuous load on the belt package. The results of this non-pneumatic tire model agreed very well with non-linear finite element analysis of a non-pneumatic tire. …

An Analysis Of Variation Between Cores For Intel Xeon Phi Knights Corner And Xeon Phi Knights Landing, Jamar Robinson May 2017

An Analysis Of Variation Between Cores For Intel Xeon Phi Knights Corner And Xeon Phi Knights Landing, Jamar Robinson

All Theses

As we move towards exascale computing, the efficiency of application performance and energy utilization, must be optimized by redefining architectural features and application performance analysis. This research analyzes the performance per core of 8 applications on Intel Xeon Phi Knights Corner (KNC) and Knights Landing (KNL) to determine if performance variation within cores can lead to performance and energy improvements. Our results showed that KNC architecture's core vary in performance, leading to faster inner core performance as a result of memory characteristics and core utilization. It also shows that cores 17, 34, and 51 on the KNL architectures performs consistently …

Phase Desynchronization In Pulse-Coupled Oscillator Networks: A New Algorithm And Approach, Timothy Benjamin Anglea May 2017

Phase Desynchronization In Pulse-Coupled Oscillator Networks: A New Algorithm And Approach, Timothy Benjamin Anglea

All Theses

In this thesis, we present a novel approach for achieving phase desynchronization in a pulse-coupled oscillator network. Ensuring phase desynchronization is a difficult problem, and existing results are constrained to a completely interconnected network and a fixed number of oscillators. Our approach is more robust than previous approaches, removing the constraint of a fixed number of oscillators. The removal of this constraint is significant because it allows the network to receive and drop nodes freely without any change to the phase update strategy. Also, to our knowledge, our approach is the first to prove the convergence to the desynchronized state …

Developing Intuitive, Closed-Loop, Teleoperative Control Of Continuum Robotic Systems, Chase Gilbert Frazelle May 2017

Developing Intuitive, Closed-Loop, Teleoperative Control Of Continuum Robotic Systems, Chase Gilbert Frazelle

All Theses

This thesis presents a series of related new results in the area of continuum robot teleoperation and control. A new nonlinear control strategy for the teleoperation of extensible continuum robots is described. Previous attempts at controlling continuum robots have proven difficult due to the complexity of their system dynamics. Taking advantage of a previously developed dynamic model for a three-section, planar, continuum manipulator, we present an adaptation control-inspired law. Simulation and experimental results of a teleoperation scheme between a master device and an extensible continuum slave manipulator using the new controller are presented. Two novel user interface approaches to the …

Design And Testing Of A Biomimetic Pneumatic Actuated Seahorse Tail Inspired Robot, Justin Dakota Holt May 2017

Design And Testing Of A Biomimetic Pneumatic Actuated Seahorse Tail Inspired Robot, Justin Dakota Holt

All Theses

The purpose of this study is to build and test a pneumatically actuated robot based on the biomimetic design of a seahorse tail. McKibben muscles, a form of pneumatic actuator, have been previously used to create highly flexible robots. It has also been discovered that the seahorse tail serves as a highly flexible and prehensile, yet armored appendage. Combining these topics, this research aims to create a robot with the mechanical flexibility of a pneumatic actuator and the protection of a seahorse tail. First, the performance of a miniature McKibben muscle design is examined. Then, the artificial muscles are implemented …

Comparison Of As-Built Fea Simulations And Experimental Results For Additively Manufactured Dogbone Geometries., Prathamesh Baikerikar May 2017

Comparison Of As-Built Fea Simulations And Experimental Results For Additively Manufactured Dogbone Geometries., Prathamesh Baikerikar

All Theses

Additive manufacturing (AM) is increasingly used in new product development: from prototyping to functional part testing, tooling and manufacturing. The flexibility of AM results in the ability to develop a geometrically complex part with reduced effort by moderating some manufacturing constraints while imposing other constraints. However, additively manufactured parts entail a certain amount of ambiguity in terms of material properties, microstructures effects and defects. Due to the intensive energy, rapid cooling and phase changes, parts made by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM "“ a branch of AM) and other layer-manufacturing processes may deviate from the designed geometry resulting in inaccuracies such …

A Targeted Drug Delivery Strategy For Trypanosomiasis Towards A Diastereoselective Boronate Ester Mediated Intramolecular Diels-Alder Cycloaddition, Heeren Manoj Gordhan May 2017

A Targeted Drug Delivery Strategy For Trypanosomiasis Towards A Diastereoselective Boronate Ester Mediated Intramolecular Diels-Alder Cycloaddition, Heeren Manoj Gordhan

All Dissertations

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), commonly called African sleeping sickness, is caused by bloodstream form Trypanosoma brucei and has the potential to affect millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Treatments have existed for the past fifty years, but are characterized by severe adverse side-effects and poor efficacy. Trypanosomes generate ATP through glycolysis, or the metabolism of glucose, which is catalyzed by enzymes called hexokinases (TbHK1 and TbHK2) in trypanosomes. Through high-throughput screenings (HTS) and structure-activity relationships (SAR), both hexokinases could be targeted with small molecules to inhibit the first step in the glycolytic pathway of trypanosomes. Of the two hexokinases, TbHK1 …

Effects Of Protein Corona On Iapp Amyloid Aggregation, Fibril Remodelling, And Cytotoxicity, Emily H. Pilkington, Yanting Xing, Bo Wang, Aleksandr Kakinen, Miaoyi Wang, Thomas P. Davis, Feng Ding, Pu Chen Ke

Publications

Aggregation of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), a peptide hormone co-synthesized and co-stored with insulin in pancreatic cells and also co-secreted to the circulation, is associated with beta-cell death in type-2 diabetes (T2D). In T2D patients IAPP is found aggregating in the extracellular space of the islets of Langerhans. Although the physiological environments of these intra- and extra-cellular compartments and vascular systems significantly differ, the presence of proteins is ubiquitous but the effects of protein binding on IAPP aggregation are largely unknown. Here we examined the binding of freshly-dissolved IAPP as well as pre-formed fibrils with two homologous proteins, namely cationic …

On-Line Estimation Of Oxygen Transfer Rate With Oxygen Enriched Air Using Off-Gas Sensor For Escherichia Coli, Mohammad Mayyan May 2017

On-Line Estimation Of Oxygen Transfer Rate With Oxygen Enriched Air Using Off-Gas Sensor For Escherichia Coli, Mohammad Mayyan

All Theses

An online estimator for the Oxygen Transfer Rate OTR for Escherichia coli cultured in bioreactors was developed, which allowed for improved culture outcomes. E. coli are used to manufacture recombinant proteins used as therapeutics, such as insulin and human growth hormone. E. coli cultures require high levels of oxygen in order to produce the therapeutics efficiently. Previous methods to estimate OTR used values for the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa, which had been determined from separate experiments and thus set to a constant value or by stopping oxygen flow periodically to the bioreactor to update the kLa value. In this …

Computational Modeling Of Organic Fluor Molecules, Nathaniel Jacob Nichols May 2017

Computational Modeling Of Organic Fluor Molecules, Nathaniel Jacob Nichols

All Theses

The goal of this research is to benchmark the computational parameters necessary to accurately model the fluorescence process of seven organic scintillating molecules, including 2-(1-naphthyl)-5-phenyloxazole (αNPO), 2-(1-naphthyl)-4-vinyl-5- phenyloxazole (vNPO), 5-(4-Bromophenyl)-3-(4-ethylphenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole (PZ1), 3-(4-Ethylphenyl)- 5-(4-vinylphenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole (vPZ1), 3-(4-Ethylphenyl)-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H- pyrazole (PZ2), 2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-5-(4-biphenylyl)-1,3,4 oxadiazole (PBD), and 2-[4-(4'- vinylbiphenylyl)]-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole monomer (vPBD). Organic fluorophores are utilized for scintillation detection, as the fluorophores emit detectable photons in response to energy deposition from ionizing radiation into the scintillator. Optimal detection efficiency occurs with emitted photons at the maximum response wavelength of the photodetector, which, for a conventional photomultiplier tube, is 420 nm. Identifying an optimal organic fluorophore structure through …

Volumetric Seam Carving, Dachao Sun May 2017

Volumetric Seam Carving, Dachao Sun

All Theses

In volumetric image analysis and visualization, challenges have be induced by the increasing size of volume over recent years. Rendering and interacting with a volume with reduced size is preferable and highly needed. The primary concern in producing such downsized volumetric images is to preserve the important structures and those of the user's interest, such as boundaries between materials. Typical volume reduction approaches usually perform uniform subsampling without the awareness of user-specified parameters such as the opacity and color transfer functions. However, it is also handy for the algorithm to have "global'' encoding and control over the entire volume, meanwhile …

Reduced Order Model Design For Three Way Catalytic Converters, Romit Ravishankar Godi May 2017

Reduced Order Model Design For Three Way Catalytic Converters, Romit Ravishankar Godi

All Theses

This research topic aims to design and simulate a reduced order model of a physics based three way catalyst (TWC) in automotive systems. A catalytic converter carries out a chemical redox reactions of pollutant gases in order to convert them to less harmful gases before emission through the vehicle exhaust. The thermal and oxygen storage dynamics of a TWC are described using a set of partial differential equations (PDE) which are coupled and non-linear in nature along the spatial axis of the catalyst. Computing the solution for a PDE based system of equations is arduous since the state of the …

Income Inequality, Rapidly Rising Housing Prices And Overdevelopment Of Houses In China, Tao Guan

All Dissertations

Four phenomena can be observed in China's housing in the past 16 years: First, the vacancy rate of new condominium properties has increased significantly. Second, housing prices have been increasing very rapidly. In fact, the prices have rarely decreased even when strict housing policies are mandated. Third, housing transactions are active, as indicated by the new condominiums that are sold very quickly. Four, new construction activities are also very active. Phenomena 2, 3, and 4 are inherently consistent, but the coexistence of phenomena 2, 3, and 4 with phenomenon 1 is very perplexing. Thus, the following research questions can be …

Normal Domains Arising From Graph Theory, Drew J. Lipman May 2017

Normal Domains Arising From Graph Theory, Drew J. Lipman

All Dissertations

Determining whether an arbitrary subring R of k[x1±1,...,xn±1] is a normal domain is, in general, a nontrivial problem, even in the special case of a monomial generated domain. First, we determine normality in the case where R is a monomial generated domain where the generators have the form (xixj)±1. Using results for this special case we generalize to the case when R is a monomial generated domain where the generators have the form xi±1xj±1. In both cases, for …

Battery Aging Studies Based On Real-World Driving, Zifan Liu

All Dissertations

While being a competitive candidate for energy storage systems in automotive applications, lithium-ion battery still needs to overcome fundamental compromises regarding energy density, power density, lifetime, costs and safety concerns. A significant breakthrough can be expected by understanding the real-world customer usage patterns and leveraging this knowledge to develop an optimized battery design and control. However, the challenges of filtering through massive real-world driving data and identifying the features relevant to the real-world battery operations still remain. This dissertation aims to bridge this gap by linking vehicle drive cycles to battery cell duty cycles, which enables quantifying the impacts of …

Evaluating Effects Of Construction-Related Land Use Change On Streamflow And Water Quality, Vijay Phanidhar Santikari May 2017

Evaluating Effects Of Construction-Related Land Use Change On Streamflow And Water Quality, Vijay Phanidhar Santikari

All Dissertations

Sediment runoff from construction sites is a major cause of impairment of surface water bodies, and the restoration efforts cost billions of dollars annually in the USA. This may be because Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed to control water quantity and quality are improperly implemented, or the safety limits imposed by regulations are inadequate. To assess the collective effectiveness of BMPs, three small watersheds that underwent various degrees of urban development, and a fourth undeveloped reference watershed were monitored in South Carolina, USA. The primary objective of the study was to characterize changes in flow and sediment output with development, …

An Integrative Approach To Elucidating The Governing Mechanisms Of Particles Movement Under Dielectrophoretic And Other Electrokinetic Phenomena, Yu Zhao May 2017

An Integrative Approach To Elucidating The Governing Mechanisms Of Particles Movement Under Dielectrophoretic And Other Electrokinetic Phenomena, Yu Zhao

All Dissertations

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) has been a subject of active research in the past decades and has shown promising applications in Lab-on-Chip devices. Currently researchers use the point dipole method to predict the movement of particles under DEP and guide their experimental designs. For studying the interaction between particles, the Maxwell Stress Tensor (MST) method has been widely used and treated as providing the most robust and accurate solution. By examining the derivation processes, it became clear that both methods have inherent limitations and will yield incorrect results in certain occasions. To overcome these limitations and advance the theory of DEP, a …

Chaos To Permanence - Through Control Theory, Sherli Koshy Chenthittayil May 2017

Chaos To Permanence - Through Control Theory, Sherli Koshy Chenthittayil

All Dissertations

Work by Cushing et al. [18] and Kot et al. [60] demonstrate that chaotic behavior does occur in biological systems. We demonstrate that chaotic behavior can enable the survival/thriving of the species involved in a system. We adopt the concepts of persistence/permanence as measures of survival/thriving of the species [35]. We utilize present chaotic behavior and a control algorithm based on [66, 72] to push a non-permanent system into permanence. The algorithm uses the chaotic orbits present in the system to obtain the desired state. We apply the algorithm to a Lotka-Volterra type two-prey, one-predator model from [30], a ratio-dependent …

All Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to develop a resilient control approach to secure Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) against cyber-attacks, network failures and potential physical faults. Despite being potentially beneficial in several aspects, the connectivity in CPSs poses a set of specific challenges from safety and reliability standpoint. The first challenge arises from unreliable communication network which affects the control/management of overall system. Second, faulty sensors and actuators can degrade the performance of CPS and send wrong information to the controller or other subsystems of the CPS. Finally, CPSs are vulnerable to cyber-attacks which can potentially lead to dangerous scenarios …

Suicidal Behaviors Among College Students: Are Transfer Students At Greater Risk?, Laura S. Bogardus May 2017

Suicidal Behaviors Among College Students: Are Transfer Students At Greater Risk?, Laura S. Bogardus

All Dissertations

Suicide is a major health concern on U.S. college campuses. Research on risk and protective factors related to suicidal behaviors among college students has revealed that certain student populations such as veterans, international students, and LGBTQ students may be at greater risk for suicide. However, no known research on undergraduate transfer student status in relation to suicide ideation and attempts exists. Using the Triadic Theory of Influence (TTI) (Flay & Petraitis, 1994) as a framework, this study seeks to shed light on the relationship between transfer student status and suicide ideation and attempts, as well as the hypothesized mediating effects …

Network Coding For Packet Radio Networks, Siddhartha S. Borkotoky May 2017

Network Coding For Packet Radio Networks, Siddhartha S. Borkotoky

All Dissertations

We present methods for network-coded broadcast and multicast distribution of files in ad hoc networks of half-duplex packet radios. Two forms of network coding are investigated: fountain coding and random linear network coding. Our techniques exploit the broadcast nature of the wireless medium by permitting nodes to receive packets from senders other than their designated relays. File transfer is expedited by having multiple relays cooperate to forward the file to a destination. When relay nodes apply fountain coding to the file, they employ a simple mechanism to completely eliminate the possibility of sending duplicate packets to the recipients. It is …

Let E be a rational elliptic curve, and let p be a rational prime of good reduction. Let a_p denote the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism of $E$ at the prime $p$, and let N_p be the number of rational points on the reduced curve E modulo p. In this dissertation we investigate two different questions regarding the statistical distribution of these two quantities. We say p is a champion prime of E if when N_p is as large as possible in accordance with the Hasse bound. In a similar vein, we say p is a trailing prime of E …

Assessing Non-Atomicity In Groups Of Divisibility, Brandon G. Goodell May 2017

Assessing Non-Atomicity In Groups Of Divisibility, Brandon G. Goodell

All Dissertations

An integral domain D is atomic if every non-zero non-unit is a product of irreducibles. More generally, D is quasi-atomic if every non-zero non-unit divides some product of atoms. Arbitrary integral domains, however, cannot be assumed to be quasi-atomic in general; factorization in a non-atomic D can be subtle. We outline a novel method of qualifying the quasi-atomicity of D by studying ascending filtrations of localizations of D and the associated groups of divisibility. This approach yields structure theorems, cochain complexes, and cohomological results. We take care to present examples of integral domains exhibiting the spectrum of factorization behavior and …
