Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Suspended Materials In A Semi-Urbanized Tidal Creek After An Historic Flood Event And Implications For Water Quality Monitoring, Barbara A. Beckingham, Michael Shahin, Kathryn Ellis, Timothy J. Callahan
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
Tidal creeks transport both dissolved and particulate natural organic carbon materials and contaminants, connecting land-based activities with estuarine surface waters. It is important to characterize these materials in tidal creeks because it provides insights as to their origins and potential for ecosystem impacts. Surface water samples were collected from Bull Creek, Charleston, SC, a semi-urbanized tidal creek wetland, on five sampling dates from fall 2015 to spring 2016 to measure total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), SUVA254 (specific absorbance as an indicator of aromaticity of DOC), and total water concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a ubiquitous …

For the better part of 2017, South Carolina saw an improvement in drought status for many of the state’s 55 counties, with the SC Drought Response Committee reporting 28 of those in ‘incipient’ (first stage of drought) status and the remaining 17 in ‘normal’ status on November 27. With regard to major rain events, Tropical Storm Irma brought noteworthy levels of rainfall to much of the state in mid-September, as well as coastal flooding. Because of the ongoing significant weather events that continue to threaten water resources and related infrastructure, Clemson’s SC Water Resources Center held its first Summit Series …

Wearable and flexible electronics warrant the development of self-powered devices to circumvent the limitations imposed by traditional energy storage devices. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) that convert waste mechanical energy from human motion into electric power offer a solution. Highly electronegative and conducting TENG materials that support the generation of both large potential differences and high currents are imperative for effectively harvesting electric power from human muscle movements. Here, we demonstrate that two-dimensional MXenes (e.g., titanium carbide Ti3C2Tx, where Tx stands for surface functional groups such as -O, -OH, and -F) are a family of electrically conducting materials that are triboelectrically more …

A Mean-Risk Mixed Integer Nonlinear Program For Transportation Network Protection, Jie Lu, Akshay Gupte, Yongxi Huang

This paper focuses on transportation network protection to hedge against extreme events such as earthquakes. Traditional two-stage stochastic programming has been widely adopted to obtain solutions under a risk-neutral preference through the use of expectations in the recourse function. In reality, decision makers hold different risk preferences. We develop a mean-risk two-stage stochastic programming model that allows for greater flexibility in handling risk preferences when allocating limited resources. In particular, the first stage minimizes the retrofitting cost by making strategic retrofit decisions whereas the second stage minimizes the travel cost. The conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) is included as the risk measure …

This study describes how district science coordinators supported teachers and implemented professional development in their districts following participation in the Science Coordinator Academy. This qualitative descriptive case study comprised three district science coordinators from three districts in a mid‐Atlantic state, as well as principals and teachers from those districts. Data sources, including observations, surveys, artifacts, and interviews, were analyzed using the framework method (Gale, Heath, Cameron, Rashid, & Redwood, 2013). District context, science coordinator background, and collaboration were salient factors that influenced coordinator practices and coordinators’ abilities to impact teacher change. We hypothesize that the development of a coaching relationship, …

Humans are a vital element to automotive manufacturing; however, skilled production personnel have largely been designated as data receivers in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) of Industry 4.0. A renewed focus on the human worker who completes significant portions of manual value-added content in automotive assembly through Cyber-Human Systems (CHS) is allowing humans to perform their jobs more safely, efficiently, and supporting enhanced control and quality monitoring of manual manufacturing tasks. There is a need for a unified complementary framework of CHS and CPS to guide the implementation of future smart manufacturing systems.

The detection of significant γ-ray emission from radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1s) galaxies enables us to study jets in environments different than those in blazars. However, due to the small number of known γ-ray-emitting NLSy1 (γ-NLSy1) galaxies, a comprehensive study could not be performed. Here, we report the first detection of significant γ-ray emission from four active galactic nuclei (AGNs), recently classified as NLSy1 from their Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) optical spectrum. Three flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) present in the third Large Area Telescope AGN catalog (3LAC) are also found as γ-NLSy1 galaxies. …

Analyses of learning based on student discourse need to account not only for the content of the utterances but also for the ways in which students make connections across turns of talk. This requires segmentation of discourse data to define when connections are likely to be meaningful. In this paper, we present an approach to segmenting data for the purposes of modeling connections in discourse using epistemic network analysis. Specifically, we use epistemic network analysis to model connections in student discourse using a temporal segmentation method adapted from recent work in the learning sciences. We compare the results of this …

One-Shot Learning In Deep Sequential Generative Models, Hanyu Guo
One-Shot Learning In Deep Sequential Generative Models, Hanyu Guo
All Theses
Regardless of the Deep Learning community's continuous advancements, the challenging domain of one-shot learning still persists. While the human brain is capable of learning a new visual concept with ease, sometimes even at a glance, Deep Learning-based techniques show serious drawbacks in handling problems with small datasets. Much of the existing work on one-shot learning employs a variety of sophisticated network algorithms, prior domain knowledge, and data manipulation to address the generalization challenges presented in such problems. In this work, we demonstrate a one-shot learning method that contains three learning networks — a deep sequential generative model, a candidate network, …

We investigated changes in district science coordinators’ understandings and practices following their participation in a statewide professional development (PD). Participants included 13 male and 34 female science coordinators from 42 different school districts in Virginia. Data included presurvey, postsurvey, and delayed postsurvey responses; follow-up interviews; and observations of the PD and of science coordinators at work in their district. Results indicated that science coordinator understandings about pedagogy and job responsibilities changed following the PD and were aligned with the goals of PD. However, coordinators’ practices following PD did not fully reflect their understandings about pedagogy. Results suggest that PD aligned …
Design And Analysis Of A Mechanical Driveline With Generator For An Atmospheric Energy Harvester, Sneha Ganesh
Design And Analysis Of A Mechanical Driveline With Generator For An Atmospheric Energy Harvester, Sneha Ganesh
All Theses
The advent of renewable energy as a primary power source for microelectronic devices has motivated research within the energy harvesting community over the past decade. Compact, self-contained, portable energy harvesters can be applied to wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things (IoT) smart appliances, and a multitude of standalone equipment; replacing batteries and improving the operational life of such systems. Atmospheric changes influenced by cyclical temporal variations offer an abundance of harvestable thermal energy. However, the low conversion efficiency of a common thermoelectric device does not tend to be practical for microcircuit operations. One solution may lie in a novel electromechanical …
Estimating The Location Of A Nuclear Source In A Three-Dimensional Environment With Unknown Background Radiation, Hangjin Liu
Estimating The Location Of A Nuclear Source In A Three-Dimensional Environment With Unknown Background Radiation, Hangjin Liu
All Theses
Finding illicit nuclear sources in an urban environment plays an important role in reconnaissance research for domestic security. This work focuses on the problem of estimating the locations of radioactive sources that potentially exist in a three-dimensional search space using a network of sensors. The design of an estimation system to provide consistent surveillance is considered using drones equipped with sensors, Global Position System (GPS) devices and basic communication capabilities. In many environments, sensors cannot be placed in close proximity to the source, which makes estimating the location of a nuclear source especially difficult. In this work, we apply maximum-likelihood …

The recent surge of interest in tin selenide (SnSe) is due to the reported record-high thermoelectric figure of merit at elevated temperatures. While the researchers are exerting tremendous efforts to further improve the thermoelectric performance of SnSe via doping and nanostructuring, it is getting more and more apparent that SnSe is fascinating in many aspects of fundamental physics. SnSe is, in many aspects, an outlier of the current materials selection rules for high thermoelectric performance. Hence, answering why thermoelectric performance is high in SnSe should come before addressing how to further improve its thermoelectric performance. To this end, there are …

We observed that teneral adults (<1 h post-molt) of Cimex lectularius L. appeared more adept at climbing a smooth surface compared to sclerotized adults. Differences in climbing ability on a smooth surface based on sclerotization status were quantified by measuring the height to which bed bugs climbed when confined within a glass vial. The average maximum height climbed by teneral (T) bed bugs (n = 30, height climbed = 4.69 cm) differed significantly (P< 0.01) from recently sclerotized (RS) bed bugs (n = 30, height climbed = 1.73 cm at ~48 h post molt), sclerotized group 1 (S1) bed bugs (n = …1>

Evaluation Of A Semi-Analytical/Numerical Method For Modeling Matrix Diffusion Effects In Groundwater Chemical Transport, Noelia Susana Muskus Ruiz
Evaluation Of A Semi-Analytical/Numerical Method For Modeling Matrix Diffusion Effects In Groundwater Chemical Transport, Noelia Susana Muskus Ruiz
All Theses
Secondary sources of contamination, such as dissolved chemicals in low permeability zones result in plume persistence and limitations for plume remediation as a consequence of the process of matrix diffusion (Mackay and Cherry, 1989; Chapman and Parker, 2005). Existing numerical transport simulators are capable of modeling matrix diffusion; however, they require fine discretization, resulting in large computational effort. An alternative approach was developed combining numerical and analytical modeling to simulate matrix diffusion effects. The semi-analytical/numerical (referred to as semi-analytical for short) approach used here was adapted from geothermal reservoir modeling of transient heat conduction in low permeability cap rocks (Vinsome …

Cross Flow Filtration Modeling Using Analytical And Numerical Solutions Along With Implementation As A Web-Based Calculator, Lauren Paige Mcintyre
All Theses
In this thesis, we present a 1D model for the complex phenomenon of cross-flow filtration. We begin by developing the governing equations and providing analytical solutions that can be found using Laplace transforms for both the simple clean filter case, and the more complex filter with fouling in the form of cake, and depth plugging of the filter media. A walk through of the set up and implementation of a simple web-based application is given, and the code to produce the web application for this model is included in an appendix. The web application acts as a calculator, accepting model …
Influence Of Beam Rotation On The Response Of Cantilevered Flow Energy Harvesters Exploiting The Galloping Instability, James H. Noel
Influence Of Beam Rotation On The Response Of Cantilevered Flow Energy Harvesters Exploiting The Galloping Instability, James H. Noel
All Theses
Energy harvesters are scalable devices that generate microwatt to milliwatt power levels by scavenging energy from their ambient natural environment. Applications of such devices are numerous, ranging from wireless sensing to biomedical implants. A particular type of energy harvester is a device which converts the momentum of an incident fluid flow into electrical output by using flow-induced instabilities such as galloping, flutter, vortex shedding and wake galloping. Galloping flow energy harvesters (GFEHs), which represent the core of this thesis, consist of a prismatic tip body mounted on a long, thin cantilever beam fixed on a rigid base. When the bluff …

Geometric Path-Planning Algorithm In Cluttered 2d Environments Using Convex Hulls, Nafiseh Masoudi
All Theses
Routing or path planning is the problem of finding a collision-free path in an environment usually scattered with multiple objects. Finding the shortest route in a planar (2D) or spatial (3D) environment has a variety of applications such as robot motion planning, navigating autonomous vehicles, routing of cables, wires, and harnesses in vehicles, routing of pipes in chemical process plants, etc. The problem often times is decomposed into two main sub-problems: modeling and representation of the workspace geometrically and optimization of the path. Geometric modeling and representation of the workspace are paramount in any path planning problem since it builds …
Determination Of Safe Ballasts For Anchoring Event Tents By Finite Element Analysis, Sandeep Manoharan
Determination Of Safe Ballasts For Anchoring Event Tents By Finite Element Analysis, Sandeep Manoharan
All Theses
Event tents are large structures made of fabric covers attached to a structural frame and poles. Every year, many temporarily installed tents are subjected to large wind conditions that lead to sliding or lift of the frame due to improper anchoring to the ground. When ballasted, as opposed to anchored using stakes that penetrate the ground, non-certified tents are generally installed without proper analysis of sufficient ballast weights, which results into tent movements and lack of safety. The objective of this thesis is to determine load factors for non-certified tents affected by high wind loads. The load requirements (load factors) …

Suppose H is a separable and complex Hilbert space with a generalized frame (also known as continuous frame) indexed over a metric measure space X. We study the main properties of generalized frames and the operators defined by them, such as concentration operators and Toeplitz operators. Imposing certain localization conditions to the generalized frame, we describe the asymptotic behavior of concentration and Toeplitz operators, and derive important results about the distribution of their eigenvalues. Furthermore, working with multiple generalized frames in H intertwined by a localization conditions, we obtain very general density results. Many examples and applications are shown, among …

Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are the most common forms of congenital malformation in newborns. Among all types of CHDs, a large portion is contributed by malformation of endocardial cushion malformation during early heart development. Although the etiology of endocardial cushion malformation is unclear, it is a result of interactions between genetic and environmental factors has been confirmed. There is hypothesis indicating that malformation of endocardial cushion is caused by altered shear stress conditions where in cushion forming area the shear stress is supposed to be high compare with other area in congenital heart. However it is difficult to justify due …

Using App Inventor To Explore Low-Achieving Students' Understanding Of Fractions, Lorraine Ann Jacques
All Dissertations
A student's understanding of fraction magnitude impacts his/her understanding of algebra (e.g., Booth & Newton, 2012; Siegler et al., 2012), which then influences his/her likelihood of graduating high school (Orihuela, 2006) or succeeding in higher education (Adelman & United States., 2006; Trusty & Niles, 2004). Literature suggests that students gain this understanding when they create and work with various representations of fractions (e.g., Ainsworth, Bibby, & Wood, 2002; Panaoura et al., 2009; Siegler, Fazio, Bailey, & Zhou, 2013), which can occur when students engage in constructivist activities such as developing games (Kafai, 1996, Apr). This study examines an intervention where …
Microwave Photonics For Distributed Sensing, Liwei Hua
Microwave Photonics For Distributed Sensing, Liwei Hua
All Dissertations
In the past few years, microwave-photonics technologies have been investigated for optical fiber sensing. By introducing microwave modulation into the optical system, the optical detection is synchronized with the microwave modulation frequency. As a result, the system has a high SNR and thus an improved detection limit. In addition, the phase of the microwave-modulated light can be obtained and Fourier transformed to find the time-of-arrival information for distributed sensing. Recently, an incoherent optical-carrier-based microwave interferometry (OCMI) technique has been demonstrated for fully distributed sensing with high spatial resolution and large measurement range. Since the modal interference has little influence on …
