Augmented Solvability Of Nth Degree Polynomials, Joseph Swanson
Augmented Solvability Of Nth Degree Polynomials, Joseph Swanson
All Theses
A group is called solvable if its derived series descends to the identity element. Galois discovered that a polynomial is solvable by radicals if and only if its Galois group is solvable. In 1824, Niels Abel published a paper proving the insolvability of a general quintic polynomial. In this paper, we provide two augmented strategies to solve all quintics, and discuss methods for how to make all nth degree polynomials solvable.
The Danger Within: Implications Of Firewood Transport In Invasive Forest Insect And Disease Spread, Angelica Solano
The Danger Within: Implications Of Firewood Transport In Invasive Forest Insect And Disease Spread, Angelica Solano
All Theses
Invasive forest insects and diseases are a problem affecting North American forests, and their intracontinental spread can be aggravated through the movement of contaminated firewood. We conducted a scoping review to assess trends and gaps in the existing literature, as well as patterns in behavior related to forest pest dispersal through firewood movement in North America. Of the 76 documents identified through our search, 24 met the inclusion criteria and were categorized based on five identified themes: 1) insect incidence in firewood, 2) insect dispersal via firewood, 3) recreational firewood movement, 4) firewood treatments, and 5) behavior and rule compliance. …
Evaluation Of Physical Parameters And Building Adaptation And Demolition Outcomes, Delaney Mcfarland
Evaluation Of Physical Parameters And Building Adaptation And Demolition Outcomes, Delaney Mcfarland
All Theses
The relationships between the physical features of buildings and the adaptability of those buildings have become an intriguing topic for many researchers in recent years. Although much research has been published about the theme of building adaptability, evaluating these relationships quantitatively is a relatively new subject. The current thesis aims to create a quantitative model of adaptability by identifying physical features of buildings that have strong, positive relationships with building adaptability. Chapter Two of the current thesis presents a design-based adaptability scoring system that evaluates college campus buildings. Eight physical features of buildings were scored and these scores were calculated …

Re-Creating Judith Beheading Holofernes, Originally Painted By Artemisia Gentileschi, In A Real-Time Rendering System, Elizabeth A. Schlesener
All Theses
Artemisia Gentileschi is one of the most renowned female artists of her time, best known for her Baroque style paintings of religious narratives.Judith Beheading Holofernes, originally painted by Gentileschi in 1620-21, now hangs permanently in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence, Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance. Many Renaissance artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, were dedicated to the arts and sciences. For the first time, artists used scientific techniques to replicate real life accurately, including knowledge of linear perspective and human anatomy. As pointed out in the Hockney-Falco thesis, artists used new inventions like the camera-obscura …
Methods For The Electrical Impedance Tomography Inverse Problem: Deep Learning And Regularization With Wavelets, Shyla Rae Kupis
Methods For The Electrical Impedance Tomography Inverse Problem: Deep Learning And Regularization With Wavelets, Shyla Rae Kupis
All Theses
Electrical impedance tomography, also known as EIT, is a type of diffusive imaging modality that is non-invasive, radiation-free, and cost-effective for recovering electrical properties within a closed domain from surface measurements. The process involves injecting electrical current into a set of electrodes to measure the voltage on the smooth surface of the domain. The recovered EIT images show how well different materials or tissues within the domain conduct or impede electrical flow, which is helpful in detecting and locating anomalies. For the EIT inverse problem, it is challenging to recover reliable and resolvable electrical conductivity images since it is highly …
Generating Training Data For Machine Learning Applications In Manufacturing Through Purposeful Failure, Ethan Wescoat
Generating Training Data For Machine Learning Applications In Manufacturing Through Purposeful Failure, Ethan Wescoat
All Theses
Manufacturing unexpected downtime contributes a significant cost drain to manufacturers. To reduce unexpected downtime, manufacturers invest in diagnostic and prognostic systems for determining equipment health. These systems help maintenance staff by providing predictions of equipment degradation over time. Based on these predictions, maintenance staff schedule repairs to prevent equipment failure from occurring during production. However, challenges still exist preventing the widespread implementation of these systems in the production environment. The amount and quality of data for training machine learning algorithms to predict these failures are two of these challenges. Existing methods of run-to-failure testing take too long to acquire the …
Rigid Body Dynamics Of Ship Hulls Via Hydrostatic Forces Calculated From Fft Ocean Height Fields, Reagan Samuel Burke
Rigid Body Dynamics Of Ship Hulls Via Hydrostatic Forces Calculated From Fft Ocean Height Fields, Reagan Samuel Burke
All Theses
An art tool is presented that utilizes a method for simulating the motion of ships in response to hydrostatic forces on the hull from a height-field representation of an ocean surface. Other forces modeled as a PID controller aid to steer the ship and stabilize the motion. The algorithms described can be applied to 3D models of arbitrary shapes composed of polygons "floating" on height fields generated from a myriad of additional spectra. The performance of the method is demonstrated in simple and complex ships, and ocean surfaces of at, medium, and large waveheights.
Privacy-Preserving Image Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks, David Karl Langbehn
Privacy-Preserving Image Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks, David Karl Langbehn
All Theses
The process of image classification using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) often relies on access to large, annotated datasets and the use of cluster or cloud-based computing resources. However, many classification applications such as those in healthcare or defense introduce privacy concerns that prevent the collection of such data and the use of pre-existing large scale computing systems. Although many solutions to privacy preserving machine learning have previously been explored, the added computational complexity incurred with training on encrypted values inhibits these systems from executing in real-time. One of the most promising solutions that facilitates secure machine learning is secure multi-party …
Efficient Automated Driving Strategies Leveraging Anticipation And Optimal Control, Robert Austin Dollar
Efficient Automated Driving Strategies Leveraging Anticipation And Optimal Control, Robert Austin Dollar
All Dissertations
Automated vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems bring computation, sensing, and communication technologies that exceed human abilities in some ways. For example, automated vehicles may sense a panorama all at once, do not suffer from human impairments and distractions, and could wirelessly communicate precise data with neighboring vehicles. Prototype and commercial deployments have demonstrated the capability to relieve human operators of some driving tasks up to and including fully autonomous taxi rides in some areas. The ultimate impact of this technology’s large-scale market penetration on energy efficiency remains unclear, with potential negative factors like road use by empty vehicles competing …

Generation And Manipulation Of Higher Order Fractional And Integer Bessel Gaussian Beams, Wenzhe Li
Generation And Manipulation Of Higher Order Fractional And Integer Bessel Gaussian Beams, Wenzhe Li
All Dissertations
Optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) describes orbiting photons, swirling local wave vectors, or spiraling phase distribution depending on what theory we use to explain light. If we consider light as a propagating electromagnetic wave, then light has the freedoms of frequency, magnitude, phase, and polarization. For a monochromatic light, expanding the later three freedoms spatiotemporally, numerous optical modes are solved from Maxwell’s equations and boundary conditions. OAM mode study starts from integer charge because it is in the integer form of the fundamental phase singularity structure.
Fractional OAM mode is the Fourier series of integer OAM modes. The average OAM …
Developing A Novel Neutron Spectrometer Using The Inverse Bonner Sphere Concept For International Safeguards, Mara Watson
Developing A Novel Neutron Spectrometer Using The Inverse Bonner Sphere Concept For International Safeguards, Mara Watson
All Dissertations
Accurate neutron measurements in international safeguards are dependent on the knowledge of significant sources of neutrons emitted in an item, which can include neutrons from induced or spontaneous fission and (alpha, n) reactions. In particular, the neutron energy spectrum is needed to accurately characterize the detector response to neutrons of a range of energies. Neutron energy spectra for neutron emitters in international safeguards are typically not well-established, particularly for (alpha, n) reactions. A novel neutron spectrometer using the inverse Bonner sphere concept was developed in this work to experimentally establish neutron energy spectra for international safeguards purposes. Well-characterized neutron sources, …
Negotiating Disciplinary Literacy Instruction In Secondary Science: A Multi-Case Study, Arsenio Silva
Negotiating Disciplinary Literacy Instruction In Secondary Science: A Multi-Case Study, Arsenio Silva
All Dissertations
National science proficiency scores in America have failed to show significant improvement for years (www.nationsreportcard.gov, 2019). Although policy reforms have come and gone in attempt to influence these trends, Disciplinary Literacy (DL) theory currently stands center-stage as one of the most recently espoused approaches to improving students’ scientific illiteracy. However, the field of DL theory is ideologically fragmented and offers little in terms of applicable strategies for practitioners (Fang, 2012a). Consequently, enacting DL instruction requires teachers to draw on highly specialized disciplinary knowledge and experience to inform their application of an incomplete DL theoretical framework (Saraceno, 2019). Yet, research shows …

Innovative Thermal Management Systems For Autonomous Vehicles — Design, Model, And Test, Shervin Shoai Naini
All Dissertations
Emphasis on reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, besides the demand for autonomy in vehicles, made governments and automotive industries move towards electrification. The integration of an electric motor with battery packs and on-board electronics has created new thermal challenges due to the heat loads' operating conditions, design configurations, and heat generation rates. This paradigm shift necessitates an innovative thermal management system that can accommodate low, moderate, and high heat dissipations with minimal electrical or mechanical power requirements.
This dissertation proposes an advanced hybrid cooling system featuring passive and active cooling solutions in a thermal bus configuration. The …

"It Comes With The Job": A Mixed Methods Study On Teacher Mental Health, The School Environment, And School Leader Practices, Jacquelyn N. Williams
All Dissertations
Teacher mental health is situated between multiple factors in the education system. At one end, teacher mental health is influenced by the school environment and the practices of their school leaders. Meaning, the quality of a school’s environment and how a school leader develops that environment as either positive or negative can affect teacher experiences of well-being or distress. On the other end, teacher mental health can influence instruction, learning environments, and their intentions to move. Given that the mental health of teachers can be advantageously or adversely influenced by their surrounding school environment and leader, it is necessary to …
Mapping Middle School Mathematics Teachers' Curriculum Assemblages: A Post-Qualitative Inquiry, Hilary Rene Tanck
Mapping Middle School Mathematics Teachers' Curriculum Assemblages: A Post-Qualitative Inquiry, Hilary Rene Tanck
All Dissertations
In my post-qualitative inquiry, I investigated four middle school mathematics teachers’ curriculum work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Curriculum has been undergoing a transformation as teachers have greater access to online resources and digital tools (Pepin et al., 2017; Webel et al., 2015). The transformation was further exacerbated by the changes forced by COVID-19 as teachers scrambled to reimagine their curriculum systems in a different context—virtual, hybrid, and concurrent. This study used a post-qualitative approach branching away from traditional linear notions of curriculum to one that is complex, dynamic, and creative. The goal was to create a space to consider curriculum …
Short-Term Variability Of Atmospheric Tides In Earth’S Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere Region, Komal Kumari
Short-Term Variability Of Atmospheric Tides In Earth’S Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere Region, Komal Kumari
All Dissertations
In the early 2000’s, advances in satellite observations and the development of whole atmosphere models led to a paradigm shift in our understanding of what drives space climate/weather in near-Earth space. In addition to solar and magnetospheric driving influences from above, it was realized that meteorological events (such as changes in convection, tropical cyclones, sudden stratospheric warmings, El Niño, to name just a few) are important drivers of space climate/weather due to the generation and upward propagation of atmospheric waves (tides, planetary waves (PW), and gravity waves (GW)) from lower atmospheric sources. Atmospheric tides are key to understanding the global-scale …

The rates of participation in out-of-school time (OST) programs have risen substantially for all youth. High quality OST programs offer youth opportunities for developmental growth through participation in a variety of ways, including building life skills, providing leadership experiences, and offering opportunities to build relationships with their peers and important non-parental adults. Research in OST programming has found that youth may gain differential benefits from participating in different types of OST activities, with many youth reporting that they participate in more than one OST activity or program. OST programs have also been noted for their ability to promote aspects of …
Exact Controllability And Inverse Problem For The Mindlin-Timoshenko System, Jason Alexander Kurz
Exact Controllability And Inverse Problem For The Mindlin-Timoshenko System, Jason Alexander Kurz
All Dissertations
In this dissertation we primarily focus on the Mindlin-Timoshenko (MT) plate system, which is a strongly coupled two dimensional system consisting of a wave equation and a system of isotropic elasticity, that arises in modeling plate vibrations especially at high frequencies and thicker plates. We prove two results regarding the MT system. Namely, the exact controllability of the system and an inverse problem result. We demonstrate the exact controllability of the system via an indirect control technique that proves a two-level indirect inverse observability estimate for the diagonalized system. For the inverse problem, we prove the global uniqueness of recovering …
The Fundamentals Of Fretting Crevice Corrosion Of Metallic Biomaterials For Orthopedic Implants, Dongkai Zhu
The Fundamentals Of Fretting Crevice Corrosion Of Metallic Biomaterials For Orthopedic Implants, Dongkai Zhu
All Dissertations
Metallic medical devices have been widely used in clinical applications, especially for joint arthroplasty or joint replacement surgery. Fretting corrosion, one of the most common forms of mechanically-assisted corrosion (MAC), has become a major concern associated with orthopedic medical devices. Crevice corrosion, a second mechanism of corrosion related to metallic medical devices, is a second factor of corrosion for many circumstances in medical devices that is an additional factor in the overall corrosion performance of these implants. It is a form of localized corrosion of metal surfaces present within the gap or crevice between two adjoining interfaces. The relationship and …
The Community Of Inquiry Effect On Learning For An Online Course, Robert Dawson Coffey
The Community Of Inquiry Effect On Learning For An Online Course, Robert Dawson Coffey
All Dissertations
Technology is transforming higher education by removing geographic constraints for both students and instructors and increasing learning and cooperation with internet-based applications. Bloom’s taxonomy continues to play a significant role in instructional design for both the classroom and online, but other theories that address the challenges of designing and teaching effective online courses have emerged. Also, classroom techniques, many learned as a teaching assistant in graduate school, may not transfer to an online environment. The Community of Inquiry framework (CoI), which originated in 1999 in response to online education, emphasizes the importance of teaching, social, and cognitive presences as necessary …

Black, Confident, And Capable: The Science Student Beliefs Of Four Black Male Science Students In A Rural Middle School Science Classroom, Adeyanju Okungbowa
All Dissertations
Lacking in educational research are the positive narratives of Black male students and their science classroom learning experiences, as told through the voices of Black male science students. This study highlighted the normative scientific practices found in A Framework for K-12 Science Education that four Black male science students experienced during a cells unit in their rural middle school science classrooms. Their shared science-student beliefs centered around the themes of confidence and capabilities, behaviors matter, the perceptions and expectations held by self and others and the utility of the normative scientific practice. These study findings provided a counter-narrative to the …
