Floodplain Geomorphology And Response To Hurricanes: Lower Pee Dee Basin, South Carolina, Thomas M. Williams, Bo Song, Daniel Hitchcock, Thomas O'Halloran Aug 2021

Floodplain Geomorphology And Response To Hurricanes: Lower Pee Dee Basin, South Carolina, Thomas M. Williams, Bo Song, Daniel Hitchcock, Thomas O'Halloran

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Undeveloped forested wetlands in the valleys of coastal plain rivers can play a large role in storing floodwater and attenuating river flooding. In the lower Pee Dee, Little Pee Dee, and Lynches Rivers, these wetlands played a large role in mitigating downstream flooding following Hurricane Florence. Wetland forest flood mitigation was most effective for large flows in the Great Pee Dee River, where flooding on former river terraces determined the course of overbank flow and the potential storage of floodwaters. Floodwater storage and attenuation of water level were less effective if larger flows were limited to the Little Pee Dee …

Streamflow And Tidal Dynamics In The Lower Pee Dee Basin: Hurricane Impacts, Thomas M. Williams, Bo Song, Daniel Hitchcock, Thomas O'Halloran

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Over past years, extreme tropical storm events along the North and South Carolina coasts—and subsequent river flooding—have warranted the need for a better understanding of the hydrologic response to these events to protect life, property, businesses, and natural and cultural resources. Our focus in this study is the Pee Dee and Waccamaw River systems, which ultimately flow into Winyah Bay near Georgetown, South Carolina. River flows, coupled with the tidal nature of these freshwater systems, are complex and difficult to predict. The objective of the work is to analyze publicly available data from gauging stations along those river system as …

Understanding Stakeholders’ Knowledge, Awareness, And Perception Of Conservation Programs In South Carolina, J. Carl Ureta, Marzieh Motallebi, Lori Dickes, Lucas Clay, Joan Ureta, Robert Baldwin Aug 2021

Understanding Stakeholders’ Knowledge, Awareness, And Perception Of Conservation Programs In South Carolina, J. Carl Ureta, Marzieh Motallebi, Lori Dickes, Lucas Clay, Joan Ureta, Robert Baldwin

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

The increasing population and economic growth of South Carolina make it attractive for landowners to convert their land to commercial and urbanized zones. However, since ecosystems are directly affected by land use, changes in these land uses directly impact the ecosystem services (ES). Therefore, efforts to conserve ecosystems are paramount and are often supported through conservation-incentive programs. One approach for conservation programs is to provide economic incentives for landowners to retain their land as forest or agricultural land. The success of these programs eventually affects the ES recipients or “end-users,” particularly the residents. Therefore, it is important to understand the …

A Multi-Reservoir Study Of The Impact Of Uncertainty In Pool Evaporation Estimates On Water-Availability Models, R. C. Phillips, Nigel Kaye, John Saylor Aug 2021

A Multi-Reservoir Study Of The Impact Of Uncertainty In Pool Evaporation Estimates On Water-Availability Models, R. C. Phillips, Nigel Kaye, John Saylor

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Quantifying evaporative loss from reservoirs plays a critical role in sound water-availability management plans and in reservoir management. Various methods are used to quantify reservoir evaporation; however, each method carries a degree of uncertainty that propagates to model predictions of available water within a reservoir or a reservoir network. Herein, we explore the impact of uncertainty in reservoir evaporation on model outputs of historical and future water availability throughout the five major reservoirs in the Savannah River Basin in South Carolina, USA, using four different evaporation methods. Variability in the total available water is evaluated using the United States Army …

Mapping Center Pivot Irrigation Fields In South Carolina With Google Earth Engine And The National Agricultural Imagery Program, C. Alex Pellett

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Aerial images taken during the growing seasons of 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017 were visually inspected for evidence of irrigation. Center pivot irrigation was identified by the characteristic shape of the spans and the curved tracks left by the wheels. The author manually delineated a polygon over each agricultural area where signs of irrigation infrastructure were observed. The result is a map of 2,689 polygons covering 146,662 acres in South Carolina. Compared with the United States Department of Agriculture 2017 Census of Agriculture, the sampling results account for over 69% of total irrigated area and over 98% of area …

Modeling Tidal Characteristics In A Creek-Marsh Drainage System: Implications For Stormwater Management, C. E. Brown, T. J. Callahan Aug 2021

Modeling Tidal Characteristics In A Creek-Marsh Drainage System: Implications For Stormwater Management, C. E. Brown, T. J. Callahan

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

The traditional goal of stormwater management is to reduce the threat of flooding to life and property, and so most landscapes are engineered to maximize the speed at which the unwanted water leaves the watershed. This has been effective in landscapes with some topographic gradient. This often involves the installation of drainage ditches that disperse runoff from urban areas to receiving water bodies; in coastal areas this means a tidal creek, estuary, bay, sounds, or the coastal ocean. This practice reduces flood hazards in some cases but results in unintended effects on the natural hydrology in the watershed and downstream …

Exploring Student Perspectives On Informal And Formal Learning In University Makerspaces, Abigail Holcombe Baker Aug 2021

Exploring Student Perspectives On Informal And Formal Learning In University Makerspaces, Abigail Holcombe Baker

All Dissertations

Informal Learning Spaces (ILSs) are increasing in popularity in many educational and community settings (Berman, 2020). One such ILS is a makerspace, where people participate in general activities of creating, building, designing, and tinkering (Oxman Ryan, Clapp, Ross, & Tishman, 2016). Makerspaces have been touted as spaces that provide students with opportunities to build fundamental knowledge, hone communication and social networking skills, offer intergenerational learning opportunities, fabricate artifacts for personal interests, and take an active and situated role when learning design skills (see: Barniskis, 2016; Blikstein, 2013; Cohen et al., 2017; Curry, 2016; Kajamaa & Kumpulainen, 2019; Lakind et al., …

The Scarf Complex Of Weighted Edge Ideals, James Mckay Visser Aug 2021

The Scarf Complex Of Weighted Edge Ideals, James Mckay Visser

All Theses

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. A free resolution is a sequence of $R$-module homomorphisms of the form \begin{center} \begin{tikzcd} X = \cdots \arrow[r,"\partial^{\beta_{i+1}}"] & R^{\beta_i} \arrow[r, "\partial_i"] & \cdots \arrow[r,"\partial_2"] & R^{\beta_1} \arrow[r, "\partial_1"] & R^{\beta_0} \arrow[r,"\partial_0"] & 0. \end{tikzcd} \end{center} where $R^{\beta_i}$ is a free $R$-module and $\ker(\partial^X_i) = \im( \partial^X_{i+1})$ for all $i > 0$. When we only have the containment $\im \partial^X_{i+1} \subseteq \ker(\partial^X_i)$ we call $X$ a chain complex. Computing these resolutions in a traditional fashion tends to be rather expensive, though some classes of resolutions can be constructed explicitly.

A Domain Decomposition Method With Local Time Discretization For A Fluid-Structure Interaction Problem, Jacob Britton Aug 2021

A Domain Decomposition Method With Local Time Discretization For A Fluid-Structure Interaction Problem, Jacob Britton

All Theses

In this work, we investigate the accuracy and efficiency of a space-time domain decomposition algorithm applied to a fluid structure interaction problem. This two properties were investigated by comparing the results against the more standard approach whereby the problem is discretized uniformly in time. This was achieved by comparing various measures of the error and the running time between the two methods when applied to an exact solution. It was found that this approach results in comparable errors and a greater stability at the expense of longer running times.

Bayesian Poisson Mortality Projections With Incomplete Data, Rui Gong Aug 2021

Bayesian Poisson Mortality Projections With Incomplete Data, Rui Gong

All Dissertations

The missing data problem pervasively exists in statistical applications. Even as simple as the count data in mortality projections, it may not be available for certain age-and-year groups due to the budget limitations or difficulties in tracing research units, resulting in the follow-up estimation and prediction inaccuracies. To circumvent this data-driven challenge, we extend the Poisson log-normal Lee-Carter model to accommodate a more flexible time structure, and develop the new sampling algorithm that improves the MCMC convergence when dealing with incomplete mortality data. Via the overdispersion term and Gibbs sampler, the extended model can be re-written as the dynamic linear …

Minimal Differential Graded Resolutions Of Fiber Products, Hugh Roberts Geller Aug 2021

Minimal Differential Graded Resolutions Of Fiber Products, Hugh Roberts Geller

All Dissertations

This dissertation is the culmination of my work in [16-18]. These papers add to a body of work focused on rings known as fiber products. A ring $F$ is said to be a fiber product if there exist ring homomorphisms $S \xrightarrow{\pi_S} W \xleftarrow{\pi_T} T$ and we have $F \cong S \times_W T := \{(s,t) \in S \times T: \pi_S(s) = \pi_T(t)\}$. In this set-up, we say that $F$ is the fiber product of $S$ and $T$ over $W$.

For our purpose we only consider rings that are commutative, noetherian rings with identity. We further consider the case where $R$ …

Risk Management In Translation: How Much Does It Really Explain?, Daniel Gile Aug 2021

Risk Management In Translation: How Much Does It Really Explain?, Daniel Gile

International Journal of Interpreter Education

While risk has always been part of translation, it was taken up as a distinct topic recently, with some confusion as to what the term actually covers and some problematic claims about its central role as a determinant of translation behavior and the links between risk and translation effort. It is argued that risk is more often a constraint than a driver of decisions, that the correlation between the magnitude of risk-associated loss and the number of problem-solving efforts can be weak, and that achievement-oriented decision making explains translatorial behavior better than risk management and is more compatible with professional …

Delivering Highly-Characterized Low-Dose X-Ray Radiation To Biological Samples, Jaclyn D'Avanzo Aug 2021

Delivering Highly-Characterized Low-Dose X-Ray Radiation To Biological Samples, Jaclyn D'Avanzo

All Theses

Since the advent and swift adoption of x-ray imaging in 1986, the understanding of radiation among the general populace has markedly increased as has the average annual radiation exposure. The biological effects of high doses and high dose-rates, particularly related to x-ray radiation, became a concern of the scientific and medical communities within the same year due to the unregulated use of such imaging. The dangers of these high doses sparked extensive studies, health recommendations, and regulations. However, after it became common practice to use the lowest dose necessary to facilitate medical treatment, the research on the biological effects of …

Thermal Modeling Of Fused Deposition Modeling Process Using Discrete Elements, Chelsea Charles Menezes Aug 2021

Thermal Modeling Of Fused Deposition Modeling Process Using Discrete Elements, Chelsea Charles Menezes

All Theses

Over the years various models have been proposed to predict the material behavior during fused deposition modeling (FDM) process. FDM produced components show anisotropic material properties as compared to the virgin materials produced via injection molding. The thermal phenomena subjected to the filament during the FDM process leads to temperature gradient between filaments within a layer and across layers. This affects the adhesion and bond formation between the filaments and leads to directional differences in bonding strengths throughout the component. In this study, discrete elements have been used to study the thermal cooling behavior of FDM deposited filaments. This approach …

Image Segmentation Applied To Electrical Impedance Tomography, Scott Randall Scruggs Aug 2021

Image Segmentation Applied To Electrical Impedance Tomography, Scott Randall Scruggs

All Theses

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has many significant applications and has gained popularity due to its ease of use and its non-invasiveness. While it has notable applications, EIT is severely ill-posed. Since EIT is ill-posed, various techniques have been considered to solve the inverse problem. While the inverse problem has been well-studied, a common question is to ask how we can improve in solving the inverse problem of the electrical impedance tomography?

In this thesis, we consider using image segmentation alongside with iteratively-regularized Gauss-Newton Method (IRGN) to solve the inverse problem of EIT in various geometries. A comparison between the reconstruction …

The Second-Person Narrative Mode Used As A Proposed Engagement Form In Virtual Reality Storytelling, Rodney Florencio Da Costa Aug 2021

The Second-Person Narrative Mode Used As A Proposed Engagement Form In Virtual Reality Storytelling, Rodney Florencio Da Costa

All Theses

Methods of storytelling in cinema, theater, and literature have well-established conventions that have been built throughout narrative history and the development of these more traditional formats. In virtual reality, though, many of the techniques that have formed part of this cinematic language or visual narrative are not easily applied. In general, when the virtual reality narrative term is used, it is associated with filmed or rendered 360º videos that use head-mounted displays for presentation and most often uses first and third-person narratives, which may compromise a director's intent for story flow.

This thesis aims to put a new light on …

Applications Of Set-Theoretic Topology In The Construction And Analysis Of Engineering Design Spaces, Joshua Bronson Ortiz Aug 2021

Applications Of Set-Theoretic Topology In The Construction And Analysis Of Engineering Design Spaces, Joshua Bronson Ortiz

All Theses

The idea of design spaces in engineering has appeared in many forms and served a variety of purposes in practice, research, and literature. Yet very few of the definitions put forth have a concrete mathematical structure that can be practically applied by the designer in real-time. This research seeks to address this gap by taking advantage of tools and techniques in point-set topology, a field that has been used successfully in a number of different areas. The primary objective of this undertaking is to formalize definitions for design spaces as topological structures that will encapsulate many of the relevant characteristics …

Demystifying Structure-Property Correlations For Perovskite Oxides Using Machine Learning To Discover Lead-Free Alternatives Solar Cells, Afrid Mazhar Shirsekar Aug 2021

Demystifying Structure-Property Correlations For Perovskite Oxides Using Machine Learning To Discover Lead-Free Alternatives Solar Cells, Afrid Mazhar Shirsekar

All Theses

Discovering optimal materials for a given application has become extremely difficult due to the vast scope of structure possibilities and requires substantial computational expense to evaluate even one of all possible structures. An increase in the structural complexity can offset combinatorial explosion and could take months, if not years, even with the advanced computational architecture, to screen every candidate. Here in this study, we propose a computational approach based on statistical learning combined with DFT based computations that can effectively screen over the entire range of possible candidates and predict the material’s electronic properties with high fidelity. Specifically, we use advanced …

Theory Of Ion Transport And Ion Current Rectification In Nanofluidic Diodes, Julia Ellen Proctor

All Theses

In this thesis, nanofluidic diodes were studied theoretically using fundamental physics as a basis. A comprehensive theory was constructed for ion current rectification (ICR) in nanofluidic systems, written from an engineering and physics perspective. The primary goal of this work was to clarify the fundamental theory of ICR through the interpretation and consideration of various literature sources on the topic, which often use contradictory definitions and simplifications. New figures were created for this research to more effectively convey and clarify vital concepts such as electric double layers (EDL), and included multiple definitions to compare different theoretical approaches. Lastly, a simulation …

Teachers' Conceptualizations And Experiences With Steam Instruction In The Early Childhood Classroom In Connection With Children's Social Emotional Competencies, Amanda Elizabeth Bennett

All Dissertations

The early childhood years are a unique and distinctive time where teachers can provide children with opportunities to cultivate not only academic skills, but also foster their social emotional competencies (SEC) to prepare them for their future endeavors. For children to be successful in an early childhood education (ECE) program, teachers must be equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills to foster students’ academic and social emotional development. One method of improving teacher effectiveness is through the use of professional development (PD) opportunities. Providing teachers with effective and meaningful PD opportunities is especially important when introducing novel instructional approaches, such …

Bayesian Framework For Causal Inference In Complex Data Structure, Li He Aug 2021

Bayesian Framework For Causal Inference In Complex Data Structure, Li He

All Dissertations

Causal inference analysis is one of the most significant and well researched topics in the analysis of observational studies. It addresses the challenge of estimating the relationship between the treatment of interest and the outcome variable (i.e., the treatment effect) in the presence of background covariates. This study aims to determine how causal inference in observational studies can be extended to cover data sets where post treatment variables exist, cluster level covariates exist, or the number of observations in the treatment groups is very unbalanced. More specifically, this study can be summarized into the following two sub-topics.1. The first part …

Comparison Of Missing Data Imputation Techniques And Analysis With Multilevel Data, Tiantian Yang Aug 2021

Comparison Of Missing Data Imputation Techniques And Analysis With Multilevel Data, Tiantian Yang

All Dissertations

Missing data is common in real-world studies and can create issues in statistical inference. Discarding cases with missing values or replacing the missing values with inappropriate imputation techniques can result in biased estimates. However, many imputation techniques have assumptions that can be hard to assess in practice. Therefore the actual appropriate imputation technique is often unclear. This dissertation consists of two major projects on missing data imputation. One of the projects focuses on comparing different missing data techniques for data sets with different missing data set characteristics. To address this issue, we develop a factorial simulation design to measure the …

Affordance Judgment For Collision Or Bypass Of Objects By Rotating Panels, Balagopal Raveendranath Aug 2021

Affordance Judgment For Collision Or Bypass Of Objects By Rotating Panels, Balagopal Raveendranath

All Theses

We interact with rotating panels like doors in our day-to-day life. Doors afford the action of entry and exit from an enclosed space. Since a rotating door can pose a risk of collision to a person standing within the swept volume of the door, the ability to judge a safe distance from the door is imperative. The current study investigated the optical information available to judge whether a rotating panel would collide with or bypass a stationary object nearby. On a desktop computer, participants saw the top-down view of a door-like panel, which rotated about one of three different axes …

Dynamical And Spectral Inverse Problem For The Wave Equation, Antonio Marcello Pierrottet Aug 2021

Dynamical And Spectral Inverse Problem For The Wave Equation, Antonio Marcello Pierrottet

All Theses

In this thesis we derive and give methods to solve the Dynamical Inverse Problem and the Spectral Inverse Problem for the one dimensional wave equation. In these problems, we have a semi-infinite spatial axis with constant wave speed and an unknown potential for the system. Given information about the system may only pertain to the boundary of the spatial axis. In the Dynamical Inverse Problem, we recover the potential from the Response Operator which represents the boundary measurement. In the Spectral Inverse Problem, we recover the potential from the Spectral Data of the Schrödinger Operator. The solution methods to both …

Development Of Guidelines For Support Structure Design And Placement In Metal Additive Manufacturing, Lucas M. Morand Aug 2021

Development Of Guidelines For Support Structure Design And Placement In Metal Additive Manufacturing, Lucas M. Morand

All Theses

Support structures used in metal additive manufacturing (AM) have traditionally been used to overcome process limitations. A new approach explored in this study used novel design and placement of support structures to reduce part deformation. First, a case study was conducted with a simple production part at a major OEM. Changing the support structures used in the print reduced the average deformation by up to 21% and the maximum deformation by up to 24%. Once this opportunity for customized support structure design was established, interviews with AM engineers were used to identify the most common challenge features that would benefit …
