Interrupting The Narrative: Reader Emapthy And Authorial Resistance In Gayl Jones’S Corregidora And Brit Bennett’S The Vanishing Half, Allison Daniel May 2021

Interrupting The Narrative: Reader Emapthy And Authorial Resistance In Gayl Jones’S Corregidora And Brit Bennett’S The Vanishing Half, Allison Daniel

All Theses

In recent years, there has been a conversation about whether or not narrative theory, and particularly narratology, are fields that are worth pursuing in the modern academy. With narrative theory’s intense focus on categories and binaries, it has fallen out of fashion as fields such as feminism and queer studies have begun to grow rapidly and expose the fluidity of these categories. Theorists such as Robyn Warhol and Susan Lanser have strived to find ways that narrative theory can co-exist and even enrich these newer fields of study while simultaneously learning from them. In this essay, I suggest that one …

"They Don't Need Men And They Don't Need God": The Liberatory Possibilities Of Waywardness In Toni Morrison's Paradise, Mary Frankovich May 2021

"They Don't Need Men And They Don't Need God": The Liberatory Possibilities Of Waywardness In Toni Morrison's Paradise, Mary Frankovich

All Theses

While Toni Morrison’s work is often a topic of critical conversations regarding race and gender in the United States, less attention is paid to her 1997 novel Paradise. Morrison’s many-layered, multi-voiced work explores the tensions between the rigidly patriarchal, all-black town of Ruby, Oklahoma, and the wayward women who live in a nearby mansion known as the Convent. The women create an unlikely community at the Convent, and Ruby’s patriarchs are so threatened by them that they murder the women. In this paper, I argue that the women in the Convent community enact alternative ways of being by claiming waywardness …

"I / Believe In Ruin": Trance, Affect, And Disorientation, Zachary Melton Kinsella May 2021

"I / Believe In Ruin": Trance, Affect, And Disorientation, Zachary Melton Kinsella

All Theses

In thirty-four numbered entries, The Pink Trance Notebooks (2015) assemble Wayne Koestenbaum’s daily observations, musings, and obsessive attachments that explore the possibilities and dangers of inhabiting a disoriented trace-state. To uncover the politics of trance at the heart of Koestenbaum’s Notebooks, I turn to theories of affect that work well with Koestenbaum’s experimental and innovative poetics. I argue that Koestenbaum’s mode of writing illustrates a drive toward an all-encompassing, inclusionary, and empowering exploration of how to make and how to obscure meaning and knowledge. The three main chapters that comprise this project approach trance poetics from a different conceptual angle. …

On-Farm Environmental Assessment Of Very Small To Small-Sized Strawberry Farms In The Southeastern United States, Dilhani Nisansala Jayawardhana May 2021

On-Farm Environmental Assessment Of Very Small To Small-Sized Strawberry Farms In The Southeastern United States, Dilhani Nisansala Jayawardhana

All Theses

Strawberries are the fifth most demanded fruit in the United States, with most eaten raw. Fresh strawberries are prone to on-farm contamination as evident by the number of foodborne disease outbreaks attributed to their consumption. Between 1997 and 2017, 32 strawberry-related outbreaks were reported, sickening 933 U.S. Americans. Proper implementation of risk management practices (RMP) can decrease strawberry exposure to foodborne pathogens. Most U.S. strawberry farms consist of very small-size operations, presenting unique challenges for implementing RMP. On-farm environmental assessments on small strawberry farms can be used to identify factors associated with RMP implementation. Two objectives guided this research: (1) …

Colonial South Carolina Cowpens And Savannas: Analyzing The Distribution Of Colonial Cattle Grazing Sites Using Gis And Predictive Modeling, John Benjamen Thomas May 2021

Colonial South Carolina Cowpens And Savannas: Analyzing The Distribution Of Colonial Cattle Grazing Sites Using Gis And Predictive Modeling, John Benjamen Thomas

All Theses

Some of colonial Charleston’s most significant landscapes are rural savannas. While it is often overlooked, the colonial cattle industry centered in South Carolina’s Lowcountry savannas played a large role in the early economy. Ultimately, the cattle trade provided many of the resources that made Charleston one of the wealthiest cities in colonial America. Today, the preservation of the physical landscapes associated with the cattle industry is more important than ever as issues like climate change and urban growth and development threaten to destroy these historic landscapes.

The purpose of this thesis is to test the applicability of modeling techniques as …

All Theses

The goal of this work is to provide researchers, preservationists, and historians with an in-depth look of the treatment of graves and gravesites over time by Bethel United Methodist Church and Old Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston, South Carolina. This data can hopefully be used by researchers in a broader sense to understand the treatment of white and African American burials over time.

Gravestones and sites can reflect how we see people within society in the past, present, and future. Therefore, documentation of social and cultural history along with the documentation of the built environment that contains tangible artifacts …

Referees Seeing Red: Uniform Color And Aggression In Team Sports, Zac Patterson May 2021

Referees Seeing Red: Uniform Color And Aggression In Team Sports, Zac Patterson

All Theses

Color plays a vital role in visual perception and communication. Scientists have developed standards for measuring and comparing hues, marketers use color to develop brands and communicate with consumers, and psychologists study the feelings and states of mind associated with colors. In the color psychology field red emerges as a color that elicits high-energy or activating responses from humans and other animals with some degree of consistency. Researchers investigate red’s effects in a number of contexts, from appetite to perceived aggression and even sexual desire and intent. Findings on the topic of red and aggression in particular branch out into …

“Integration With Difference:” Harvey Gantt’S Legacy At Clemson Recontextualized And Resurrected Into Architecture, Marquise Drayton May 2021

“Integration With Difference:” Harvey Gantt’S Legacy At Clemson Recontextualized And Resurrected Into Architecture, Marquise Drayton

All Theses

In 2017, the Clemson Board of Trustees dedicated the granite marble surrounding Thomas Green Clemson's statue near Tillman Hall as "Gantt Circle." Named after Harvey Gantt, the first Black student at the university, it was an initiative pushed by the History Task Force to contextualize the Upstate land grant school's history better. The stonework complements the historical marker near the campus building where Gantt registered for his first semester there on January 28th, 1963. However, outside of these physical landmarks, a namesake scholarship endowment, and a multicultural office that honors him and his wife, there are no free-standing buildings on …

Autonomous Power And Profound Agency: Women And Magic In The Icelandic Legendary Sagas, Amanda Platz May 2021

Autonomous Power And Profound Agency: Women And Magic In The Icelandic Legendary Sagas, Amanda Platz

All Theses

The Icelandic Legendary Sagas contain within them a unique representation of women’s autonomy and agency, seen strongly in the ways women use magic. Scholars such as Jochens and Friðriksdóttir discuss women’s representations most prominently in the Family Sagas, often brushing over the Legendary Sagas due to their fantastical and mythological nature which makes cultural analysis based on the texts difficult. The fantastical nature of the Legendary Sagas, however, presents the opportunity to thoroughly explore unique representations of women’s autonomy. Other female archetypes often analyzed in the sagas are represented influencing male action, such as the inciter or whetter who encourages …

"Enthusiastic Jew And Lover Of Humanity": August Bondi And The Roots Of Transnational Freedom During The Long Nineteenth Century, Matthew Christopher Long May 2021

"Enthusiastic Jew And Lover Of Humanity": August Bondi And The Roots Of Transnational Freedom During The Long Nineteenth Century, Matthew Christopher Long

All Theses

Migration is a decidedly human condition that has influenced the development of all nations. Yet the cultural and demographic impacts upon the United States during the long nineteenth century brought about by the mass movements of peoples from Africa, Europe, and beyond were especially pronounced. Immigrants to North America brought with them more than linguistic and cultural artifacts, however; propelled by intellectual currents in their countries of origin, they often carried with them a sensibility of revolution, radical republican politics, and a moral suasion that they employed as they navigated the political and social realities in their new countries. Many …

Toward A Common Understanding Of Video Commercials And Narrative Advertisements, Raine Templeton Riley May 2021

Toward A Common Understanding Of Video Commercials And Narrative Advertisements, Raine Templeton Riley

All Theses

Video commercials, or television advertisements, have gained a lot of attention in scholarship since the first television advertisement aired in 1941. In recent years, scholars have examined advertisements using the lens of narrative persuasion and as entertainment features on their own. This study builds on previous literature by identifying types of advertisements – non-narrative and narrative – and further describes narrative advertisements in terms of structural aspects and appeal types using exemplars. A set of nearly 200 unique award-winning and otherwise popular advertisements are categorized by Advertisement Type based on prior works in advertising as well as Primary and Secondary …

Negotiating Disciplinary Literacy Instruction In Secondary Science: A Multi-Case Study, Arsenio Silva May 2021

Negotiating Disciplinary Literacy Instruction In Secondary Science: A Multi-Case Study, Arsenio Silva

All Dissertations

National science proficiency scores in America have failed to show significant improvement for years (www.nationsreportcard.gov, 2019). Although policy reforms have come and gone in attempt to influence these trends, Disciplinary Literacy (DL) theory currently stands center-stage as one of the most recently espoused approaches to improving students’ scientific illiteracy. However, the field of DL theory is ideologically fragmented and offers little in terms of applicable strategies for practitioners (Fang, 2012a). Consequently, enacting DL instruction requires teachers to draw on highly specialized disciplinary knowledge and experience to inform their application of an incomplete DL theoretical framework (Saraceno, 2019). Yet, research shows …

Qualitative data further revealed that participants demonstrated improvements in …

"It Comes With The Job": A Mixed Methods Study On Teacher Mental Health, The School Environment, And School Leader Practices, Jacquelyn N. Williams May 2021

"It Comes With The Job": A Mixed Methods Study On Teacher Mental Health, The School Environment, And School Leader Practices, Jacquelyn N. Williams

All Dissertations

Teacher mental health is situated between multiple factors in the education system. At one end, teacher mental health is influenced by the school environment and the practices of their school leaders. Meaning, the quality of a school’s environment and how a school leader develops that environment as either positive or negative can affect teacher experiences of well-being or distress. On the other end, teacher mental health can influence instruction, learning environments, and their intentions to move. Given that the mental health of teachers can be advantageously or adversely influenced by their surrounding school environment and leader, it is necessary to …

None But Ourselves: An Afrocentric Case Study Examining Emancipatory Practices Within Three African-Centered Schools, Lashia Bowers May 2021

None But Ourselves: An Afrocentric Case Study Examining Emancipatory Practices Within Three African-Centered Schools, Lashia Bowers

All Dissertations

Research about African American students often focuses on problems situated in deficit viewpoints steeped in Eurocentric ideologies that ignore systematic miseducation. Using an Afrocentric case study methodology, I examined how school leaders and mental health professionals use emancipatory practices in African-centered schools to address miseducation. This study aimed to investigate emancipatory practices, actions that help students become liberated from oppression, from an Afrocentric epistemological lens to provide foundational information about possible solutions to miseducation. Findings from individual interviews, paired interviews, and school document data from three African-centered schools detail specific emancipatory practices concerning: positive identity development, mental and emotional freedom, …

Exploring The Role Of Youth-Adult Relationships In Promoting Positive Outcomes Of Youth: An Application Of The Rhodes’ Mentoring Model, Alexandra Sandoval

All Dissertations

The rates of participation in out-of-school time (OST) programs have risen substantially for all youth. High quality OST programs offer youth opportunities for developmental growth through participation in a variety of ways, including building life skills, providing leadership experiences, and offering opportunities to build relationships with their peers and important non-parental adults. Research in OST programming has found that youth may gain differential benefits from participating in different types of OST activities, with many youth reporting that they participate in more than one OST activity or program. OST programs have also been noted for their ability to promote aspects of …

Essays On Law Enforcement Incentives, Shannon R. Graham May 2021

Essays On Law Enforcement Incentives, Shannon R. Graham

All Dissertations

Law enforcement incentives have become a relevant discussion topic in recent years. Starting with sheriff offices, elections may introduce different incentives for sheriffs, impacting arrest rates and other behaviors around election periods. My first chapter examines the impact of both the primary and general elections on arrest rates in sheriff jurisdictions. Results show that offices led by a sheriff running for re-election see a decrease of 0:19 arrests per 1,000 capita following a loss in the primary. Offices with incumbents who win the primary but proceed to lose the general show 0:62 fewer arrests per 1,000 capita in the month …

Examining The Everyday Life Of Child Care Workers: How Low Wages And The Lack Of Benefits Affect Their Lives And Decisions About Employment, Amanda Megan Mcdougald Scott

All Dissertations

Child care workers’ wages have been an issue that has plagued the early childhood education field for over five decades. Although research exists on child care workers’ low wages, turnover rates, and lack of benefits, the details of daily life experiences from child care worker perspectives are scant. This study aims to add a lived experience perspective to the child care worker research, as well as provide stories which may be used as examples to inform policy change.

This qualitative Participatory Action Research entailed semi-structured interviews with 14 child care workers to investigate: (a) the everyday life of child care …

Three Essays In Political Economy, Shilpi Mukherjee May 2021

Three Essays In Political Economy, Shilpi Mukherjee

All Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of three essays in political economy. In the first chapter, I study the short-run political polarization between Republican and Democrat politicians in the House of Representatives before and after the November 2018 midterm election, using Twitter data. I compute various metrics of ideological polarization at weekly intervals using methods such as hashtag analysis, topic modelling ,Bayesian Ideal Point Estimation, mention and retweet network analysis. I empirically check for the patterns in political polarization during the election cycle at the level of discourse. Different measures of polarization signal different patterns in polarization. When polarization is measured by …
