The Work Of Authorship, Mireille Van Eechoud Jan 2014

The Work Of Authorship, Mireille Van Eechoud

A repository of copyright educational resources for higher education

This volume brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to explore the challenges inherent in translating aesthetics and creativity studies to concepts of copyright, especially as longstanding approaches are troubled by the rise of digital.

The last chapter of this book has a section on the disconnect between copyright law and cultural norms in scientific publishing.

Developing An Online Environmental Landscape Certification Program, A. Hough, M. Wylie, P. Pena, N. Menchyk, D. Park, S. White Jan 2014

Developing An Online Environmental Landscape Certification Program, A. Hough, M. Wylie, P. Pena, N. Menchyk, D. Park, S. White

Focus on Creative Inquiry

Landscape maintenance is a large, rapidly growing, and unregulated small business sector South Carolina (SC). Beyond a pesticides applicators license, no experience or training is currently required in SC. A Lever-Initiative grant was awarded to develop an online Environmental Landscape Certification Program to help landscape professionals meet client expectations and protect SC natural resources. A survey was conducted to identify stakeholder buy-in including content, cost, and preference on learning style. In order to increase adoption by contractors and technicians, specific strategic areas throughout SC were selected to spearhead the program. Stakeholder meetings were held in March to identify barriers to …

The Works Of William Blake, Edwin Ellis, W. B. Yeats Jan 2014

The Works Of William Blake, Edwin Ellis, W. B. Yeats

Bibliographic Studies

As one of the significant nineteenth-century developments in the dissemination of Blake's poetry, this book also made an ambitious attempt to interpret the poet's vatic approach to the making of literature. Today, this classic of 1893 is still illuminating for the lifetime influence it had on one of its editors, W. B. Yeats, who became perhaps the twentieth century's greatest poet in English and, like Blake, a visionary one, at that.

Presently, disparate parts of the book's three volumes may be found on the Internet but not all three. This online facsimile is the first to present all three simply …

Owning And Using Scholarship: An Ip Handbook For Teachers And Researchers, Kevin L. Smith Jan 2014

Owning And Using Scholarship: An Ip Handbook For Teachers And Researchers, Kevin L. Smith

A repository of copyright educational resources for higher education

Copyright and other types of laws regulating intellectual property create an increasing concern for contemporary scholarship. The digital environment has created exciting new opportunities and possibilities for scholars to work and distribute their work. But these new opportunities also create issues that did not arise in the analog world. Owning and Using Scholarship: An IP Handbook for Teachers and Researchers attempts to demystify intellectual property, and especially copyright law, for academic authors and independent scholars who face these dilemmas. It also can serve as a comprehensive resource for librarians who are asked to assist with these new and challenging decisions.

Creating Space: Pedagogical Choices To Encourage A Third Space In An Urban, Kindergarten Science Classroom, Cassie F. Quigley, Anna H. Hall

“The butterfly is in the chrysalis stage,” Victory informed us as she pointed to the brown chrysalis in the jar on the lab bench, “It was an egg then it formed its chrysalis or pupa and then it will become a butterfly.” When we asked her how she would describe this to her friends, she remarked, “It is like when you go into the dressing room and put on a church dress- you act like someone different.” In this example, Victory, a kindergartener, was translating the scientific language taught to her in the science classroom into a language her friends …

Tigers In The Trenches: The Clemson College Class Of 1917 In The First World War, Alan C. Grubb, Brock M. Lusk Jan 2014

Tigers In The Trenches: The Clemson College Class Of 1917 In The First World War, Alan C. Grubb, Brock M. Lusk

Publications

Clemson University proudly proclaims that the Class of 1917 volunteered en-masse for service during the First World War, after President Woodrow Wilson sought a declaration of war from Congress in April 1917. A bullet stating the claim is the first on the Clemson Corps’ “Stories & Highlights inside the Scroll of Honor” web page,1 and the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) on campus trumpets this to incoming cadets. I personally remember hearing this as a young Cadet 4th Class from my ROTC instructor in 1998 and imaging the men who graduated sailing to Europe to serve beside one another in …

God’S Dominion: Omar Ibn Said Use Of Arabic Literacy As Opposition To Slavery, Akel Kahera Jan 2014

God’S Dominion: Omar Ibn Said Use Of Arabic Literacy As Opposition To Slavery, Akel Kahera

Publications

Omar ibn Said’s Th e Life of Omar Ibn Said, Written by Himself (1831) occupies a unique position within the slave narrative tradition. As the only surviving Arabic autobiography written by a slave from the United States, the Life juxtaposes a religious exegesis based on the textual authority of the Qur’an with a first-person account of Omar’s life. Only recently rediscovered, having been found in a trunk in a Virginia at-tic in 1995 and sold to a private collector after being lost since 1920, the manuscript has sparked renewed interest in writings by enslaved Muslims in America, and in particular …

A Comparative Survey Of Domestic And International Experiences In Capstone Design, Beshoy Morkos, Joshua D. Summers, Samantha Thoe Jan 2014

A Comparative Survey Of Domestic And International Experiences In Capstone Design, Beshoy Morkos, Joshua D. Summers, Samantha Thoe

All CEDAR Publications

This paper studies the differences between student experiences in domestic and international capstone design offerings for mechanical engineering students at Clemson University. For this, we conducted surveys and interviews of students participating in both the traditional domestic version of a capstone course at Clemson University and a group of students that participated in an international, study abroad version of a capstone course jointly administered by Clemson University and West Virginia University. The surveys were given to students before and after the program to assess whether the international component had an impact on their global awareness when compared to their peers …

In December of 2011, a group of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other Clemson community members came together to discuss the invisibility of the queer and trans communities in the “Clemson family” message. The event was held at the Madren Center and sponsored in part by the then‐Dean of Students Joy Smith. One of the motivating factors of the meeting was Clemson University’s unfortunately low score, 2 out of 5 stars, on the National LGBT‐Friendly Campus Climate Assessment tool from Campus Pride. The average score among the Top‐20 Public Schools (U.S. News & World Report, 2013) is 4.4 out of …
