From 4-H International Youth Exchange To Global Citizen: Common Pathways Of Ten Past Program Participants, Mary E. Arnold, Jamie Davis, Aimee L. Corliss

Journal of Youth Development

This qualitative study examined the life course of ten adults who participated as youth in the 4-H International Exchange program. The purpose of this research was to explore the pathways that led each participant to their exchange experience as a youth and how that experience set the stage for further development into an adulthood marked by cultural interest, awareness, competence and global citizenship. Using a grounded theory approach the data were analyzed through selective, open, and axial codings that elucidated a series of key events, opportunities, and qualities that form a common pathway among all participants. The results of this …

Dealing With Moms And Dads: Family Dilemmas Encountered By Youth Program Leaders, Aisha Griffith, Reed W. Larson Jul 2014

Dealing With Moms And Dads: Family Dilemmas Encountered By Youth Program Leaders, Aisha Griffith, Reed W. Larson

Journal of Youth Development

The leaders of youth programs encounter a range of challenging situations that involve youth’s parents or families. This qualitative study obtained data on the variety and nature of these family-related “dilemmas of practice.” Longitudinal interviews with leaders of 10 high quality programs for high-school-aged youth yielded narrative information on a sample of 32 family dilemmas that they had encountered. Grounded theory analysis identified four categories of family dilemmas: 1) problems at home that become a concern to the leader, 2) parents’ expectations are incongruent with program norms or functioning, 3) parents do not support youth’s participation in the program or …

Interpreter Boot Camp: Working Toward Achieving Interpreter Standards, Jessica Bentley Sassaman May 2014

Interpreter Boot Camp: Working Toward Achieving Interpreter Standards, Jessica Bentley Sassaman

International Journal of Interpreter Education

A project was established in the state of Pennsylvania to mentor interpreters who scored between 3.0 and3.4 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment(EIPA), missing the state minimum standard score of 3.5 or higher. This article serves as a template for interpreter trainers interested in setting up an interpreter “boot camp” to assist graduates in bridging the gap from an interpreter training program to work in an educational setting. Four mentees and four mentors, two instructors from interpreting programs, and one educational consultant participated in the Pennsylvania Interpreter Boot Camp. Although not all mentees achieved the targeted 3.5 scores when they …

Professional Interpreter Trainingin Mainland China: Evolution And Current Trends, Cheng Zhan

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Professional interpreter training in Mainland China has developed tremendously since it was first included in higher education programs. China’sunprecedented economic development, coupled with its rising strength in international affairs, have increasingly helped professional interpreter training obtain its academic status. Such a process has not only been rapid, but it has also shown characteristics typical of the higher education context in China. In this article, the author reviews the history and evolution of professional interpreter training in China and analyzes current trends. The author also points out some challenges and problems facing the training of interpreters in academic programs.

Examining The Effects Of School-Level Variables On Elementary School Students' Academic Achievement: The Use Of Structural Equation Modeling, Matthew Robert Della Sala May 2014

Examining The Effects Of School-Level Variables On Elementary School Students' Academic Achievement: The Use Of Structural Equation Modeling, Matthew Robert Della Sala

All Dissertations

School finance scholars have called for the alignment of accountability policies with state finance formulae to allocate resources toward student learning goals (Adams, 2008; Ryan, 2008; Superfine, 2009; Verstegen, 2002). With the presence of accountability policies that focus on improving students’ academic achievement, state finance systems must be repurposed to allocate educational resources to schools based on research-based practices that are linked to student achievement. The purpose of this study is to test the sufficiency of a new conceptual model of the effects of educational resources on student achievement using structural equation modeling. The goal of this study is to …

Birding By Ear: A Study Of Recreational Specialization And Soundscape Preference, Zachary D. Miller May 2014

Birding By Ear: A Study Of Recreational Specialization And Soundscape Preference, Zachary D. Miller

All Theses

Soundscapes have become recognized as an important natural resource. The traditional human-made versus natural soundscape comparison currently used in recreational resource management is challenged by borrowing soundscape components (i.e., biophony, anthrophony, and geophony) from soundscape ecology. This study is designed to evaluate the soundscape preference of birders. A three-component model of recreational specialization was used to evaluate how recreationists may differ in their preference for soundscape components. Data from in-person surveys collected at The Audubon Center and Sanctuary at Francis Beidler Forest in Harleyville, South Carolina were used in combination with surveys from online birding list servers to obtain a …

Night's End, Michael Whiteside May 2014

Night's End, Michael Whiteside

All Theses

The following work has two chapters; the first is a short story entitled 'Night's End,' and the second is a short essay entitled 'The Dilemma of Evil in Donald Ray Pollock's 'Dynamite Hole.'' 'Night's End' is loosely based on a true story. To respect the parties involved, I will not mention their names. The events are fictional, and deal with people's potential for corrosive, immoral action. The story depicts an evening in the life of Jennie Weston, a woman whose husband has cheated on her and left home. Her daughter, Becky, runs away soon thereafter to live with her boyfriend, …

Lanyer's Virtual Community: The Defense Of Female Community In Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, Megan Roberts May 2014

Lanyer's Virtual Community: The Defense Of Female Community In Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, Megan Roberts

All Theses

This thesis discusses how Aemilia Lanyer's poem Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum represents a virtual space that allows for female community among women who share similar ideals. The three main areas of investigation are the dedications that serve as a structural community for her dedicatees, Christ and his disciples' community breaking down, and Eve's thwarted community in Eden. Christ is a feminized figure in Lanyer's poem who gives women a representative in the Bible, and his interactions with his disciples are something that scholars of Lanyer's work have not discussed. Lanyer's section on Eve is often dissected for its protofeminist, or …

A Modernism Against Maestros: Horacio Quiroga And The Transnational Automaton, Jacqueline Fetzer May 2014

A Modernism Against Maestros: Horacio Quiroga And The Transnational Automaton, Jacqueline Fetzer

All Theses

In this paper I will explore the possibility that Horacio Quiroga's regional treatment of modernist themes is more than a creole adaptation or mimicry of the European maestros, instead placing Quiroga in dialogue with an international framework of contemporary texts that explore conflicting attitudes towards modernity through dark portrayals of science and technology. I focus on Quiroga's 1910 novella El hombre artificial (The Artificial Man), a text with an amalgamation of themes and plot devices that have caused the work itself to be dismissed for being of 'poor quality.' Yet these themes and formal features integrally connect Quiroga's novella to …

White Noise And Newer Media: The Prophetic Impact Of Jack's Avatars, Caleb Milligan May 2014

White Noise And Newer Media: The Prophetic Impact Of Jack's Avatars, Caleb Milligan

All Theses

In this paper, I analyze Don DeLillo's White Noise through a contemporary techno-literate approach that utilizes Internet and game studies to better understand its protagonist, Jack Gladney, and to reevaluate the novel's critical legacy. Jack is not a modernist living in a postmodern world, as critics like Tom LeClair, John Duvall, and Leonard Wilcox have claimed for the many years since the publication of this novel. Lacking the authentic consistency for such a title, he is instead a postmodern human simulacrum sampling different character types to avoid his lack of discernable self. In each role he plays, however, he is …

Self-Reported Health: Cross-Regional Differences In The United States, 2010, Dongqi He May 2014

Self-Reported Health: Cross-Regional Differences In The United States, 2010, Dongqi He

All Theses

Although self-reported health surveys are used widely by governments, hospitals and companies, there has been little cross-regional investigation of the reliability of these self-reported inventories. I demonstrate the distribution of the self-reported health rate and some factors that may affect the distribution using a National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) sample that focuses on respondent aged between 50 and 85 in year 2010. Then I examine the relationship between self-reported health and real health by constructing disability weights and find that respondents' self-reported health is generally consistent with their real health status, except for west region, suggesting that more future works …

Acquiescence: Stories, Justyna Anna Pekalak May 2014

Acquiescence: Stories, Justyna Anna Pekalak

All Theses

This creative thesis consists of two short stories centered on implications of immigration and uprooting: the possible loss of control and the self, and as a result, existing solely as a body in transit, all of which may lead to a threat of violence. Both stories discuss the immensely radical act of migration, but are set in different landscapes (Polish and American) in order to explore the issue from two different viewpoints: that of someone returning to a place they had left, and that of a person living on still foreign soil. The issue of movement is especially important in …

Deconstructing The In-Patient Behavioral Health Facility: Finding The Balance Between Safety And Therapeutics, Robert J. Schultz May 2014

Deconstructing The In-Patient Behavioral Health Facility: Finding The Balance Between Safety And Therapeutics, Robert J. Schultz

All Theses

Casualty statistics resulting from 10+ years of combat action/deployments in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) have yielded multiple casualties. These casualty types include the visibly and invisibly wounded, where the visible (physical) wounds include but are not limited to gunshot/shrapnel, blunt trauma and blasts from Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). The invisibly wounded include but are not limited to Combat Stress, Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brian Injury (TBI). Unfortunately and although operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have decreased, invisible wounds continue to persist yielding an increase in soldier behavioral health complications which at an …

The Impact Of The American Invasion Of Grenada On Anglo-American Relations And The Deployment Of Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces In Britain, Timothy Anglea May 2014

The Impact Of The American Invasion Of Grenada On Anglo-American Relations And The Deployment Of Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces In Britain, Timothy Anglea

All Theses

This thesis studies the impact the American invasion of Grenada in 1983 had on Anglo-American relations and the deployment of cruise missiles in Britain. Anglo-American nuclear relations were dependent on a strong level of trust between the two governments. The deception employed by President Reagan's government in concealing American intentions concerning Grenada from the British government broke that trust. The American invasion also furthered doubts held by the general British population concerning the placement of American owned and operated cruise missiles on British soil. The deployment of Intermediate-Range Nuclear forces in Britain and Western Europe was crucial to Prime Minister …

Without Words, Adrienne Lichliter May 2014

Without Words, Adrienne Lichliter

All Theses

My work seeks to question culture's occupation with the direct and conclusive, stirring the viewer away from immediate understanding in order to better grasp the pervasive vitality of the obscure. The thesis outlines the presence of the unclear in our lives and our lack of consideration of its importance due to an occupation with productivity. This argument is made with a body of non-objective artwork that presents visual and spatial ambiguities. By occupying paradoxes and indeterminate focal points, the art resists recognition and conclusion both formally and intellectually. The paper also discusses the importance of printmaking and restraint, requiring one …

Domestic Cisterns In Charleston, South Carolina: Public Health And Private Water In An Antebellum City, Brittany Mckee May 2014

Domestic Cisterns In Charleston, South Carolina: Public Health And Private Water In An Antebellum City, Brittany Mckee

All Theses

This study is the first comprehensive analysis of domestic cisterns in the antebellum United States. Cisterns, traditionally defined as catchment or storage facilities for rainwater collected by means of a drainage system, became a common domestic utility in Charleston, South Carolina during the nineteenth century. The earliest cisterns on the peninsula were constructed in the city's more affluent properties. By 1870 they were a household feature in all areas of the city. Two primary factors motivated Charlestonians to install domestic water collection systems. First, the city urbanized with little to no sanitation policy. As a result the city experienced frequent …

The Deception Of Perception: Browning, Childe Roland, And Supersensory Belief, Catherine Blass May 2014

The Deception Of Perception: Browning, Childe Roland, And Supersensory Belief, Catherine Blass

All Theses

Browning's fascination with the senses and the mind as determiners of reality floods his work. 'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,' in particular, offers a more complicated, sincere exploration of this topic that had become central to Victorian debate. As Browning acknowledges repeatedly through his poetry, the debate between sensory data (empiricism) and supersensory belief (idealism) could not be understood in clear-cut categories. In much of his poetry, however, he grounds these questions in deceptively simple discussions of mesmerism or the Victorian philosophy of the mind. Although those two topics may seem disparate to twenty-first century readers, Victorian belief …

The Salient Traditional Medicinal Plants And Conservation Strategies Of The Loita Maasai Of Kenya, Jedidah Nankaya May 2014

The Salient Traditional Medicinal Plants And Conservation Strategies Of The Loita Maasai Of Kenya, Jedidah Nankaya

All Theses

Approximately 80% of the rural population in developing countries relies on traditional medicinal plants for their health care needs. As a result, people have developed their knowledge of these traditional medicines through their experiences and daily observations. In the Maasai community, this information is deeply rooted in their culture, transferred from one generation to the next orally and along gender lines. This study explored the traditional medicinal plants used by the Loita Maasai to treat human health problems with the aim of identifying the salient medicinal plants of the Loita Maasai and their uses (Chapter 2). In addition, due to …

The Leconte Lodge: A Lens For The Evolution And Development Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Lindsay D. Lanois May 2014

The Leconte Lodge: A Lens For The Evolution And Development Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Lindsay D. Lanois

All Theses

Officially established in 1934, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park originated as part of a widespread cultural trend towards outdoor recreation, national tourism, and the federal government's assumption of responsibility for land conservation. However, the area of Tennessee and North Carolina selected by the federal government for the national park was not a purely unsettled landscape. Not only did the land serve as home to approximately ten permanent agricultural communities, but it also featured several hotels and lodges inspired by the burgeoning twentieth-century tourism industry. Beginning as a rudimentary hiking cabin constructed in 1925 and evolving throughout the 1930s, the …

Inverse Problems Using Reduced Basis Method, Phil Gralla May 2014

Inverse Problems Using Reduced Basis Method, Phil Gralla

All Theses

Inverse Problems is a field of great interest for many applications, such as parameter identification and image reconstruction. The underlying models of inverse problems in many applications often involve Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). A Reduced Basis (RB) method for solving PDE based inverse problems is introduced in this thesis. The RB has been rigorously established as an efficient approach for solving PDEs in recent years. In this work, we investigate whether the RB method can be used as a regularization for solving ill-posed and nonlinear inverse problems using iterative methods. We rigorously analyze the RB method and prove convergence of …
