Leisure Experiences And Social Support Systems Of Latino College Students With Daca Status, Carolyn Austin Langley May 2015

Leisure Experiences And Social Support Systems Of Latino College Students With Daca Status, Carolyn Austin Langley

All Theses

The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the leisure experiences of undocumented Latino young adults in order to note any potential links between leisure experience and success in reaching higher education. This population faces a unique set of challenges in their transition to adulthood and their pursuit of and access to higher education. Research suggests that three common factors among undocumented young adults who have been successful in reaching higher education are extra familial mentors, positive social supports, and supplementary educational programming. This study used the three factors related to success in transition to higher …

Gender Differences In Depression And Alcohol Abuse Responses To Sexual Assault, Lindsey Rae Hutton May 2015

Gender Differences In Depression And Alcohol Abuse Responses To Sexual Assault, Lindsey Rae Hutton

All Theses

I examined reactions, specifically depression and alcohol abuse, of both male and female sexual assault victims with survey data from the National Violence Against Women Survey. I compared victims of both attempted and completed sexual assault with nonvictims in their development of both depression and alcohol abuse. I also examined the level of traumatic characteristics of the assault and its relation to the development of depression and alcohol abuse. I studied gender in all of these relationships as a possible moderator. Both male and female victims develop depression more often than nonvictims. Female attempted sexual assault victims develop problems with …

The integrity of Parks and Protected Areas (PPA) depends on management that acknowledges their position as part of the socio-cultural context and demonstrates awareness and attention to ethnic and racial dimensions of the communities adjacent to these areas. The Unites States National Park Service has dedicated resources and effort to determine ways to keep units in the national park service relevant in a changing world. The fastest growing and second largest demographic in the Unites States is the Latino or Hispanic population. Very little has been published about this rapidly growing population of Latin Americans residing in the United States …

Kaleidoscopic View Of Voices Shaping Female And Male Adolescents' Dynamic Mathematics Identity Within Single-Sex And Coeducational Environments, Amber Simpson

All Dissertations

With amendments made to the Title IX legislation in 2006, public schools in the United States were permitted to establish single-sex classes as an option for students to enroll voluntarily. Yet, our understanding of how single-sex mathematics classes affect female and male adolescent students in the United States is sparse. The purpose of this study is to contribute to this limited body of scholarship by gaining insights into the similarities and differences in how middle grade female and male students' narrate their mathematics identity within a single-sex and coeducational mathematics classrooms, as well as how class type may be shaping …

Administrative Support Of Novice Science Teachers: A Multiple Case Study, Leann Iacuone

All Dissertations

Novice science teachers leave the confines of colleges and universities to embark on a new adventure in education where they aim to influence young minds, make a difference in the world, and share their love for their content. They have learned their pedagogical skills with the support and assistance of fellow classmates, a supporting professor, and a cooperating teacher. These teachers enter their new place of employment and are met with many unexpected challenges, such as a lack of resources, no one to ask questions of, and a busy staff with already established relationships, causing them to feel an overall …

The Dynamics Between Intercollegiate Athletics & Academics: A Phenomenologial Case Study Approach, Cherese F. Fine May 2015

The Dynamics Between Intercollegiate Athletics & Academics: A Phenomenologial Case Study Approach, Cherese F. Fine

All Dissertations

Intercollegiate athletics has played a prominent role in higher education. While athletics may not fit into the purpose of higher education, its presence has brought many benefits to colleges and universities, such as brand recognition. However, the commercialization of schools with big-time sports programs has, at times, impact the integrity of these institutions. The large presence of athletics has commonly caused tensions between athletics and academics. Causes of tension typically are about the concern of the welfare of student athletes. While there are many studies that focus on the student athlete experience in regards to their academic and athletic commitments, …

Understanding The Experiences Of Underrepresented Women In Student Affairs At A Predominately White Institution Through A Dynamic Network Analysis Framework, Lani San Antonio May 2015

Understanding The Experiences Of Underrepresented Women In Student Affairs At A Predominately White Institution Through A Dynamic Network Analysis Framework, Lani San Antonio

All Dissertations

As institutions become more diverse among the student body, minority faculty and staff are recruited to better support underrepresented students. However, while much thought is often placed in recruitment efforts, institutions often fail to execute appropriate retention efforts of their minority faculty and staff (Turner, Gonzalez & Wood, 2008). Due to this, underrepresented women often find themselves faced with many barriers and lack of resources needed to successfully transition into new roles and environments (Harris, Wright & Msengi, 2011; Jackson & Harrison, 2007; Maramba, 2000). The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of underrepresented women in student …

Perceptions Of Career And Technology Education Among African American Students, Laura Smith May 2015

Perceptions Of Career And Technology Education Among African American Students, Laura Smith

All Dissertations

Recent studies have found that Career and Technology Education can lower dropout rates among high school students (Stone and Lewis, 2012). Students that are enrolled in Career and Technical Education are exposed to a plethora of career opportunities that they may not be cognizant of without the learning environment found at Career and Technology Centers. African American students participate in Career and Technology Education more than any other racial or ethnic group (Silverberg, 2004). Because Career and Technology Education has been found to be an important aspect of increasing graduation rates and African American students participate more than any other …

New Americans' Perspectives On Retention And Adaptation Of Childrearing Practices In Vermont: Building Intercultural Relationships, Julie Richards May 2015

New Americans' Perspectives On Retention And Adaptation Of Childrearing Practices In Vermont: Building Intercultural Relationships, Julie Richards

All Dissertations

With the prevalence of global migration, many communities are becoming increasingly diverse. However, along with the benefits of diversity, cultural divides can emerge. Members of the dominant culture may not be familiar with, nor understand, cultural practices of the newly arrived community member, and vice versa. This dissertation research sought to identify various cultural childrearing practices as well as New Americans' perspectives on childrearing within Vermont. Barriers and supports for cultural retention and adaptation were identified, along with potential contributions that New Americans can offer their communities in understanding who they are and what they bring to the childrearing experience.

Estimation Of Procurement Auctions With Secret Reserve Prices, Di Wu May 2015

Estimation Of Procurement Auctions With Secret Reserve Prices, Di Wu

All Dissertations

The first two chapters of my dissertation are essays on estimation of procurement auctions with secret reserve prices. In the last chapter, I develop a test on strong disposability versus weak disposability for non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) estimators. In auctions with secret reserve prices, the possibility that the item goes unsold in the first round generates a particular form of multi-round auction in which information on bids is revealed after each round. If bidders have an imperfect estimate of project costs, the information revealed by observing the bids of others in the previous round can mitigate the classic winner's …

Engageme: The Design And Implementation Of A Reflective Tool For Evaluating Student Engagement, Shelby Solomon Darnell May 2015

Engageme: The Design And Implementation Of A Reflective Tool For Evaluating Student Engagement, Shelby Solomon Darnell

All Dissertations

Recently, there has been a growing push to explore the potential of non-cognitive factors in helping students reach their fullest potential. Engagement, one predictor of student achievement, is such a factor. Because the conditions under which engagement is elicited may vary, EngageMe, a visualization tool, has been developed to assist instructors’ efforts to understand student engagement in the learning process. The application attempts to enhance traditional observation methods by utilizing electrodermal activity, a measure of physiological arousal, as a proximal indicator of engagement. An iterative, participatory design process was used to create prototypes of the EngageMe interface. The results of …

Helping Americans Bridge The Kanji Gap, Dylan Cowden, Maria Hawkins, Sophia Houtzer, Kazumasa Matsuhira, Mariah Mcminn, Steven Mets, Alex Young

For native English speakers, Japanese is one of the hardest foreign languages to master. One major culprit is kanji. With over 2100 kanji in everyday use, mastering them all is a daunting task. The way Japanese children and American students learn to use kanji is different, but often the same teaching methods are used when teaching both groups. Our goal was to design a smart phone application to facilitate better learning methods for American students of Japanese. This app would feature games for learning kanji in context, a reinforcement system to repeat previously mastered kanji for maximum retention, and writing …

Evaluating The Nutritional Risk Of Older Adults Participating In The South Carolina Older Americans Act, Maciel Ugalde, Katherine L. Carson, Cheryl Dye, Vivian Haley-Zitlin Apr 2015

Evaluating The Nutritional Risk Of Older Adults Participating In The South Carolina Older Americans Act, Maciel Ugalde, Katherine L. Carson, Cheryl Dye, Vivian Haley-Zitlin

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Older Americans Act (OAA) services are designed to help older adults maintain maximum independence in their homes and communities and to promote a continuum of care for the vulnerable elderly. Monitoring nutrition status of Area Agencies on Aging clients will help identify those at high nutritional risk for poor health outcomes and the factors contributing to that risk. This assessment will inform the development of strategies to enhance delivery of food and nutrition services to those with the greatest need. The purpose of this study is to determine population “hot spots” of high nutritional risk and their association with demographic …

Sage (Student Ambassadors For Global Engagement), Caroline Cornish, Grace Winchell, Misayo Welke, Angela Garren, Meghan Smith, Samantha Verzella, Paige Atkins, Katherine Mcgreevy

Focus on Creative Inquiry

This Creative Inquiry course, Student Ambassadors for Global Engagement (SAGE), works on initiatives that serve to integrate the international populations on the Clemson University campus. Beginning in the Fall 2014, students began researching two things: (1) the opportunity for Clemson students to become TEFL/TESOL certified and (2) the services available for International students at Clemson. Out of this research, the group came up with the idea a of having Clemson domestic students assisting international students to improve their English language skills. This semester, we have put this idea into place. The group was trained by a professional TESOL instructor and …

Stratification And Enumeration Of Boolean Functions By Canalizing Depth, Qijun He, Matthew Macauley Apr 2015

Stratification And Enumeration Of Boolean Functions By Canalizing Depth, Qijun He, Matthew Macauley

Publications

Boolean network models have gained popularity in computational systems biology over the last dozen years. Many of these networks use canalizing Boolean functions, which has led to increased interest in the study of these functions. The canalizing depth of a function describes how many canalizing variables can be recursively “picked off”, until a non-canalizing function remains. In this paper, we show how every Boolean function has a unique algebraic form involving extended monomial layers and a well-defined core polynomial. This generalizes recent work on the algebraic structure of nested canalizing functions, and it yields a stratification of all Boolean functions …
