Exploring The Impact Of Co-Teaching On High School Math Achievement For Students With Disabilities, Josh T. Oxendine
Exploring The Impact Of Co-Teaching On High School Math Achievement For Students With Disabilities, Josh T. Oxendine
All Dissertations
This Dissertation in Practice explores the implementation of a co-teaching model in Algebra 1 classrooms at Green High School, part of the Excellent School District. The study was conducted due to the persistent underperformance among students with disabilities (SWD) on the Algebra 1 End of Course test, which led to the school’s designation as an Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) site by the South Carolina Department of Education. Developed using the principles of improvement science, the study utilized the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle as a framework to guide and evaluate change.
The change idea centered on embedding co-teaching in two …
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Undergraduate General Chemistry, Destinee J. Cooper
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Undergraduate General Chemistry, Destinee J. Cooper
All Dissertations
General chemistry is a foundational course for advancement in most undergraduate STEM programs, but unfortunately, many students do not continue in STEM after their experiences in their general chemistry course. Culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) has the potential to increase students’ positive experiences in general chemistry by centering their needs, identities, and backgrounds. However, this pedagogical approach has not been widely studied in the college general chemistry context. As such, my four-paper dissertation broadly aimed to explore both the implementation and outcomes of CRP in undergraduate general chemistry.
The first paper reviewed the literature on culture-based pedagogies across the full undergraduate …
Exploring Teacher Decision-Making Based On 4k Children’S Emotional Observations And Narratives: A Multiple Case Study, Keith Johnston
Exploring Teacher Decision-Making Based On 4k Children’S Emotional Observations And Narratives: A Multiple Case Study, Keith Johnston
All Dissertations
The benefits of quality social-emotional instruction in early childhood programs are well established. The crux of delivering these benefits lies in teacher social-emotional decision-making in early childhood classrooms. While there is scant research on the topic, there is evidence that decentralizing social-emotional decision-making can help teachers achieve better outcomes by including families and other early childhood professionals, using data to inform decisions, and reviewing research. The current study is a multi-case qualitative analysis of two 4K teachers from a child development center in the South Carolina Upstate. It describes how the two subjects use social-emotional decision-making to support their students’ …
Teacher Efficacy In Reading Intervention: The Role Of Coaching And Professional Development In Foundational Literacy, Susan S. Chapman
Teacher Efficacy In Reading Intervention: The Role Of Coaching And Professional Development In Foundational Literacy, Susan S. Chapman
All Dissertations
This Dissertation in Practice utilized improvement science methods to increase teacher self-efficacy in foundational reading practices and to address the oral reading fluency (ORF) challenges of elementary students who consistently score below proficiency. Rooted in Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy and the Active View of Reading, the study aimed to build teacher confidence in delivering foundational reading instruction while improving student ORF rates. A Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle was implemented with second-grade teachers and targeted the following aim: increase ORF by 12 words correct per minute (wcpm) for students receiving Tier 3 intervention over an eight-week cycle. Coaching, using the student-centered coaching …
Are They Ready? Impacting Kindergarten Readiness Through The Science Of Reading, Traci T. Boyles
Are They Ready? Impacting Kindergarten Readiness Through The Science Of Reading, Traci T. Boyles
All Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to investigate how Science of Reading (SOR) professional development for preschool teachers, implemented through collaborative teaching and assessment cycles, influences the kindergarten readiness of preschool students.
Students from impoverished families start kindergarten at a considerable disadvantage regarding literacy. Literacy-focused curricula and professional development for teachers strongly affect reading outcomes. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) provides a systemic framework for data-based problem solving and decision-making. The MTSS framework aligns literacy interventions with tiered supports to ensure all students receive the assistance they need to achieve reading proficiency.

Flipping The Script?: The Development And Validation Of A Qualitative Framework For Identifying Key Cognitive And Attitudinal Components Of Conflict-Based Problem Representations, Kyle Christenson
All Dissertations
When people work together, disagreements are inevitable. How someone understands a given conflict, specifically whether they see it as a shared problem or not, can shape how they respond and whether they look to resolve it collaboratively. Researchers have studied many aspects of conflict, like what causes it and the strategies people use to manage it. But we know much less about how people think about conflict in the first place and how those thoughts affect efforts to manage conflict. This research developed a tool to study how people describe conflicts in writing. It identifies key ideas and attitudes that …
From Cities To Ranches: Assessing Public Support For Jaguar (Panthera Onca) Conservation And Livestock Predation In Colombia, Luz Angelica Solano
From Cities To Ranches: Assessing Public Support For Jaguar (Panthera Onca) Conservation And Livestock Predation In Colombia, Luz Angelica Solano
All Dissertations
Jaguars are among the most emblematic large carnivores worldwide. Nonetheless, the species has declined by 25% in less than 25 years and their range has been reduced by 55%, approximately, primarily due to habitat loss from increasing agricultural development, retaliatory killings from human-jaguar conflict, and overhunting of their natural prey. Given the anthropogenic nature of these threats, developing effective coexistence strategies and public support for jaguar conservation are increasingly urgent for the continued persistence of this species. I conducted a scoping review to assess trends and gaps in the existing peer-reviewed literature, grey literature, and news articles related to human-jaguar …

Across the nation, agricultural industry professionals have bemoaned the shortage of qualified professionals, expressing an expanding need for graduates with a blend of discipline-specific and employability skills to advance the sector. Research indicates that the future of the US agriculture sector hinges on a diverse and skilled workforce. Yet, a paucity of literature exists on Black women's enduring legacy, experiences, and how they understand and develop 21st-century critical transferable professional competencies needed to address complex challenges in modern agriculture. Black women have a long tradition in agriculture and a wealth of cultural knowledge, skills and innovations that are untapped. This …
Investigating The Impact Of Adaptive Sports And Recreation Involvement For Veterans, Ashley Bowen
Investigating The Impact Of Adaptive Sports And Recreation Involvement For Veterans, Ashley Bowen
All Dissertations
Adaptive sports and recreation programs offer a promising complementary recreation-based treatment option for veterans with service-connected disabilities and health conditions, and these programs can positively impact veterans’ lives. The many biopsychosocial benefits of veteran adaptive sport and recreation participation have been researched, but studies focused on measuring the broader impact of these programs are new. The Experience Type Framework (ETF) and its associated measures, the Experience Impact Scale (EIS) and Experience Type Scale (ETS), offer options for measuring that broader impact. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of adaptive sports and recreation experiences for veterans, explore …
Improving Reading Proficiency Through A Structured Mtss Framework: Bridging The Gap Between Evidence And Practice, Meghan N. Greer
Improving Reading Proficiency Through A Structured Mtss Framework: Bridging The Gap Between Evidence And Practice, Meghan N. Greer
All Dissertations
This dissertation, Improving Reading Proficiency Through a Structured MTSS Framework: Bridging the Gap Between Evidence and Practice, investigates the efficacy of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in enhancing reading proficiency among students. Despite extensive research supporting the effectiveness of targeted reading interventions, a gap remains between these findings and their practical implementation in diverse classroom settings. The Reading Wars—a longstanding debate between whole language, balanced literacy, and phonics-based instruction—have significantly influenced reading instruction in the United States. A growing body of research supports explicit, systematic phonics instruction as a critical component of early reading development (Foorman et al., 2016; …

Using Parent Empowerment Groups To Increase Academic Success In Kindergarten Multilingual Learners, Sarah C. Deloach
All Dissertations
This study examined how parent empowerment groups influence the academic success of kindergarten multilingual learners. With increasing immigration across the United States, schools need to work with families to ensure students develop the skills required for academic achievement at each level. The identified problem is that the current multilingual learner program at Boyd Matthews Elementary does not adequately meet parents’ needs in building a strong home-school connection, placing the full responsibility of learning on the school and leaving students without critical academic support at home. Parent empowerment groups were held with multilingual kindergarten parents to share practical strategies for supporting …
The Influence Of Past Experiences On Middle School Band Directors’ Instructional Practices, Jessie Lynn Peterson
The Influence Of Past Experiences On Middle School Band Directors’ Instructional Practices, Jessie Lynn Peterson
All Dissertations
This qualitative study investigated the influence of middle school band directors’ past experiences on their instructional decision-making and implementation of culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP). Embedded in Ladson-Billings’s (1995, 2014) CRP framework and Lortie’s (1975) apprenticeship of observation theory, this study explored the relationship between middle school band directors’ past experiences, their beliefs about CRP, and their instructional practices.
Music education in the United States has historically focused on Western European classical traditions that overlook the cultural diversity of today’s students and reinforce dominant pedagogical norms. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six middle school band directors. Participants discussed their musical backgrounds, …

The Intersection Of Makeup And Recreation: A 21st Century Overview Of Makeup Participation And Its Recreational Benefits, Jason Morgan
All Dissertations
This dissertation critically reconceptualizes makeup participation as a legitimate, multidimensional form of recreation. Through a comprehensive rapid review using the SPIDER framework of 102 peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2025, the research investigates whether and how makeup fulfills the psychological, affective, and symbolic criteria of meaningful leisure. Drawing on the Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP) and broader recreation theory, the study positions makeup not merely as aesthetic behavior or consumer habit, but as a sustained, emotionally generative practice embedded in identity, creativity, personal growth, and well-being.
Findings reveal that makeup is consistently linked to confidence-building, emotional regulation, self-expression, and psychological …
Improving Health Outcome Through Mobile Clinics, Spatial Access, And Overdose Management: A Data-Driven Study Of People Who Inject Drugs, Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder, And College Students, Abass A. Babatunde
All Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Background
The opioid crisis remains a critical public health challenge in the United States. Mobile Health Clinics (MHCs) have emerged as a promising solution to bridge healthcare access gaps for these vulnerable populations, particularly for PWID and individuals with OUD in underserved and rural communities. Despite their potential, geographic disparities in MHC access and knowledge gaps in opioid overdose management and related diseases, including Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), remain significant barriers to care. This dissertation addresses three key dimensions of healthcare delivery for PWID, OUD populations, and college students: (1) barriers to MHC utilization for HCV screening and treatment …
User Perceptions On Health: Three Cases Of Senior-Friendly Cities, Soomin Kim
User Perceptions On Health: Three Cases Of Senior-Friendly Cities, Soomin Kim
All Dissertations
Senior issues have been rapidly rising in contemporary society since the Baby Boomer generation started retiring. Their change in socio-economic status is giving rise to several new social phenomena, one of which is senior isolation. For urban planners and designers, this new wave of senior isolation necessitates a fresh approach and reevaluation of formal urban environments.
This research proposes three questions around senior isolation. First, a) what aspects of the built environment contribute to senior isolation and loneliness in urban and suburban environments, and b) what are the effects of each on senior populations concerning the risk of isolation and …
