Examining Predictors Of Implementation Quality In An Emerging International Extension Context, Ryan J. Gagnon, Jonathan Pettigrew Aug 2018

Examining Predictors Of Implementation Quality In An Emerging International Extension Context, Ryan J. Gagnon, Jonathan Pettigrew

Publications

In this article, we explore a component of evidence-based programming—implementation quality—within an emerging international Extension context. Specifically, we examine how the traits, characteristics, and perceptions of 46 program facilitators influenced their support of maintaining implementation quality in a Nicaraguan youth violence and substance abuse prevention program, Dale se REAL. The results indicated that of four potential variables, only facilitator buy-in to the Dale se REAL program was a meaningful predictor of implementation support. The implications of the study findings, relative to evidence-based Extension research in both the United States and an emerging international context, are discussed.

Understanding Thai Attitudes Toward Individuals With Physical Disabilities: Outcome Of An International Adaptive Sports Training Program, Elizabeth Atwood Murphy Aug 2018

Understanding Thai Attitudes Toward Individuals With Physical Disabilities: Outcome Of An International Adaptive Sports Training Program, Elizabeth Atwood Murphy

All Theses

The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of an international adaptive sports training program on attitudes towards individuals with physical disabilities. Participants (n=37), either college students or professors at the Institute of Physical Education in Chiang Mai, Thailand, were involved in an international adaptive sports training program provided by the U.S. Department of State. The Multidimensional Attitudes Scale Toward Persons with Disabilities (MAS) was used to measure attitudes before and after exposure to the international adaptive sports training program. A one-way ANOVA and descriptive statistics were utilized to compare participant scores across time, and explore demographic information. …

A Forgotten Founder: The Life And Legacy Of Christopher Gadsden, Kelcey M. Eldridge Aug 2018

A Forgotten Founder: The Life And Legacy Of Christopher Gadsden, Kelcey M. Eldridge

All Theses

This study examines the life and legacy of Christopher Gadsden. Specifically, it explores Gadsden's understanding of individual and colonial rights, proper channels of protest, and early republicanism. It is through the discussion of these topics that this thesis highlights the importance of studying the individual reaction to the American Revolution and independence. Additionally, this study highlights the fact that many of the terms we use to describe these Revolutionary figures, such as radical or conservative, are not adequate — each individual experienced many changes in their life that led to their support of independence. Furthermore, this study opens the door …

Sexual Selection And Mixed Sex Expression: Adolescent Protandry, Phenotypic Tradeoffs And ‘Unconventional' Sex Allocation Estimates In A Protandric-Simultaneous Hermaphrodite, J. Antonio Baeza Aug 2018

Sexual Selection And Mixed Sex Expression: Adolescent Protandry, Phenotypic Tradeoffs And ‘Unconventional' Sex Allocation Estimates In A Protandric-Simultaneous Hermaphrodite, J. Antonio Baeza

Publications

In protandric-simultaneous (PS) hermaphrodites, individuals invariably reproduce as males first and later in life as simultaneous hermaphrodites. In this study, the shrimp Lysmata wurdemanni (Gibbes, 1850) was used as a model to (i) test for the role of sexual selection (male-male competition) in explaining the early male phase and size-dependent sex allocation (SDSA) in PS hermaphrodites, (ii) examine the tradeoff between the male and female function in hermaphrodites, and (iii) determine if SDSA also takes place in the form of sex-specific behaviors and anatomical structures. In L. wurdemanni, male mating ability was size- and sex-dependent; greater for small than …

Modeling Dynamics Of Gel-Based Composites Under Ferromagnetic Resonance Heating, Oksana Savchak Aug 2018

Modeling Dynamics Of Gel-Based Composites Under Ferromagnetic Resonance Heating, Oksana Savchak

All Theses

Designing soft, active materials that change their shape and properties depending on external stimuli is a rapidly developing area of research. Using theoretical and computational modeling, we focus on the dynamics of gel filled with uniformly distributed ferromagnetic nanoparticles exposed to electromagnetic (EM) waves in the GHz frequency range. For the polymer matrix, we choose Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) gels, which have a lower critical solution temperature and shrinks upon heating. When these composites are irradiated with EM waves that have frequency close to that of the Ferro-Magnetic Resonance (FMR) frequency, the heating rate increases dramatically. The magnetically induced heating inside the …

Wishes: Modeling Characters And Environments For A Visual Narrative, Erik John Reed Aug 2018

Wishes: Modeling Characters And Environments For A Visual Narrative, Erik John Reed

All Theses

Wishes showcases character and environmental models designed for an original short animation. The story begins when a wishing coin comes to life and tries to interfere with the wish of its owner. The narrative, a quintessential romance, derives a timeless appeal from its locale, Paris. The design is inspired by digital artists like Cecille Carre, directors like Pete Docter, and painters like Eugene J. Paproski. Overall concepts and production of the models spanned five months.

School District Expenditures And Student Achievement, Emily Lynn Hanson Aug 2018

School District Expenditures And Student Achievement, Emily Lynn Hanson

All Theses

Many studies argue that adding more money to schools has little effect on student achievement. However, there is a growing belief that the allocation of the funds in school districts matters. To test the importance of allocating extra funds to specific spending categories, I use a fractional logit model to estimate the proportions of students who pass the English and Mathematics MCAS exams in Massachusetts school districts. I first use a one-year lag of total in-district expenditures per-pupil as the variable of interest, then I break down the total into lagged teacher and non-teacher expenditures per-pupil. The results of my …

"This Court Doth Keep All England In Quiet": Star Chamber And Public Expression In Prerevolutionary England, 1625–1641, Nathaniel A. Earle Aug 2018

"This Court Doth Keep All England In Quiet": Star Chamber And Public Expression In Prerevolutionary England, 1625–1641, Nathaniel A. Earle

All Theses

The abrupt legislative destruction of the Court of Star Chamber in the summer of 1641 is generally understood as a reaction against the perceived abuses of prerogative government during the decade of Charles I's personal rule. The conception of the court as an 'extra-legal' tribunal (or as a legitimate court that had exceeded its jurisdictional mandate) emerges from the constitutional debate about the limits of executive authority that played out over in Parliament, in the press, in the pulpit, in the courts, and on the battlefields of seventeenth-century England. Too narrow a focus on the question of the court's legitimacy, …

Language And Literacy In A Head Start Preschool: Understanding Practice To Inform Theory And Improve Outcomes, M. Deanna Ramey Aug 2018

Language And Literacy In A Head Start Preschool: Understanding Practice To Inform Theory And Improve Outcomes, M. Deanna Ramey

All Dissertations

Head Start is a federally funded program providing comprehensive social and early education services to children from low-income households and their families. Seeking to boost outcomes of Head Start students, in 1998 Congress amended Head Start's statement of purpose, specifying school readiness as the program's top priority. This mission change necessitated that Head Start, long-focused on promoting social competence, shift attention to a new concern—supporting children's development in cognitive domains such as math and literacy. Data suggest that though some progress has been made, Head Start preschoolers still lag behind their peer group in assessments of early math, language, and …

The Awareness And Attitudes Of Teachers Towards Educational Restrictions For Immigrant Students, William David Mccorkle Aug 2018

The Awareness And Attitudes Of Teachers Towards Educational Restrictions For Immigrant Students, William David Mccorkle

All Dissertations

This study examines a national sample of K-12 teachers in their awareness of the educational restrictions for immigrant students, particularly students who are undocumented, as well as their attitudes towards educational rights for these students. In addition, there is an analysis of how awareness and attitudes relate to the broader beliefs about immigration and nationalism. The results show that teachers' awareness about educational restrictions is positively correlated with more inclusive attitudes towards rights for immigrant students. There is an even stronger relationship between attitudes and awareness of the broader immigration system. Support for educational rights for immigrant students is also …

Equipping Culturally Competent Students: The Development Of Cultural Intelligence In The Classroom And Beyond, Melody J. Harper

All Dissertations

In a globalized and multi-cultural world, it is increasingly important for universities to produce graduates with the intercultural competencies to excel in their professions, provide leadership in multi-national arenas and organizations, and thrive in diverse local communities. This quasi-experimental, quantitative study explored the effects of various methods of classroom instruction on participants' change in cultural competency as measured by the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS). The changes in CQS scores were analyzed across three groups: a traditional classroom setting, an experiential classroom setting, and an enhanced study abroad group. The results showed substantial and statistically significant change in both classroom groups, …

The study has explored user-generated social media data before, during, and after the November 2015 terror attacks in Paris to understand factors of the destination image. Correspondingly, by accessing …

Modding The Apocalypse: (Re)Making Videogames As Post-Structuralist Free Play, Samuel Jackson Fuller Aug 2018

Modding The Apocalypse: (Re)Making Videogames As Post-Structuralist Free Play, Samuel Jackson Fuller

All Dissertations

This dissertation is about seeing videogames, and videogame design, through the lens of Gregory Ulmer"™s electracy apparatus theory. Videogame modding is emphasized an electrate approach to intervening in existing media. Mods have the potential to make potent rhetorical arguments, but they are little-understood in the field of rhet-comp, and there are numerous obstacles to carving a space for them in academic curricula; nevertheless, they are an increasingly common form of participatory engagement that make use of a broad digital skillset. Modders fit into Gregory Ulmer"™s electracy apparatus as egents"”agents of change in the Internet age"”and their playful appropriation of objects …

Persuasive Intelligence: On The Construction Of Rhetor-Ethical Cognitive Machines, Nathan D. Riggs Aug 2018

Persuasive Intelligence: On The Construction Of Rhetor-Ethical Cognitive Machines, Nathan D. Riggs

All Dissertations

This work concerns the rhetorical and moral agency of machines, offering paths forward in machine ethics as well as problematizing the issue through the development and use of an interdisciplinary framework informed by rhetoric, philosophy of mind, media studies and historical narrative. I argue that cognitive machines of the past as well as those today, such as rapidly improving autonomous vehicles, are unable to make moral decisions themselves foremost because a moral agent must first be a rhetorical agent, capable of persuading and of being persuaded. I show that current machines, artificially intelligent or otherwise, and especially digital computers, are …

Living With Giants: Human-Elephant Conflict And Poaching In Myanmar, Christie Lynn Sampson Aug 2018

Living With Giants: Human-Elephant Conflict And Poaching In Myanmar, Christie Lynn Sampson

All Dissertations

To address both the impacts of poaching on the wildlife and human populations and create effective conservation policy, conservation efforts must engage communities and include their views as stakeholders in the development of the policy. The involvement of local people has been shown to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of conservation efforts. However, to appropriately engage local people, the government and conservationists must understand their experiences with wildlife, and how local communities' experiences with human-wildlife conflict and poaching influence their willingness to support wildlife conservation programs. Using the Asian elephant as an example, we developed what we consider to be …

Avian Tail Ontogeny, Pygostyle Formation, And Interpretation Of Juvenile Mesozoic Specimens, Dana J. Rashid, Kevin Surya, Luis M. Chiappe, Nathan Carroll, Kimball L. Garrett, Bino Varghese, Alida Bailleul, Jingmai K. O'Connor, Susan C. Chapman, John R. Horner

Publications

The avian tail played a critical role in the evolutionary transition from long- to short-tailed birds, yet its ontogeny in extant birds has largely been ignored. This deficit has hampered efforts to effectively identify intermediate species during the Mesozoic transition to short tails. Here we show that fusion of distal vertebrae into the pygostyle structure does not occur in extant birds until near skeletal maturity, and mineralization of vertebral processes also occurs long after hatching. Evidence for post-hatching pygostyle formation is also demonstrated in two Cretaceous specimens, a juvenile enantiornithine and a subadult basal ornithuromorph. These findings call for reinterpretations …

Self-Reflective Practices: Application Among Sign Language Interpreters, Stephanie Sowa, Campbell Mcdermid Jun 2018

Self-Reflective Practices: Application Among Sign Language Interpreters, Stephanie Sowa, Campbell Mcdermid

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This study examined self-reflective techniques used by English–American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. While the literature on service industries suggests that self-reflective practices are beneficial(Goswell, 2012; Musolino, 2006), little empirical evidence of those benefits is found in the field of sign language interpreting(Dangerfield & Napier, 2016; Russell & Winston, 2014). Six interpreters were asked to complete an interpretation from American Sign Language into English. They then utilized a retrospective think-aloud protocol to assess their recorded target texts. The three novices focused on specific signs and errors while the three experts talked about the speaker’s goal. This reflects Russell and Winston’s(2014)findings in …
