Integrated Performance Assessments: A Review Of The Literature And Steps To Move Forward, Stephanie M. Madison Oct 2019

Integrated Performance Assessments: A Review Of The Literature And Steps To Move Forward, Stephanie M. Madison

Publications

Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs) have been heralded as a more authentic manner in which to evaluate language learners. Based on the principles of Dynamic Assessment (DA) and Performance-Based Assessment (PBA), IPAs continue to be used in both K-12 and university language classrooms. However, some teachers may be hesitant to implement IPAs due to concerns with logistics, including time constraints and giving feedback to every student in a large class. This review of the literature explores the theoretical underpinnings to the IPA, as well as practical considerations for teachers.

Using Community-Engaged Research To Explore Social Determinants Of Health In A Low-Resource Community In The Dominican Republic: A Community Health Assessment, Arelis Moore De Peralta, Lauren Davis, Katherine Brown, Michelle Fuentes, Suzanne Falconer, Jenneil Charles, Michelle Eichinger

Publications

Introduction:

Previously published community health assessments (CHA) have explored social determinants of health in low-resource, Haitian-majority Dominican communities. The present CHA was conducted in Las Malvinas II, a Dominican-majority low-resource community, and represented a first step for developing a building a healthier community process.

Method:

A binational community–academic partnership adapted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s CHANGE (Community Health Assessment and Group Evaluation) guide to conduct a CHA through community-engaged, mixed-methods research. Data were collected on five community selected public health priorities (i.e., education, sanitation, unwanted pregnancies, chronic disease management, and vaccine-preventable diseases) and community assets through focus groups, …

Effects Of Organizational Trust And Project Delivery Variables On Bim User Confidence, Jason D. Lucas, Saw Sri Neeharika Vijayarao Sep 2019

Effects Of Organizational Trust And Project Delivery Variables On Bim User Confidence, Jason D. Lucas, Saw Sri Neeharika Vijayarao

The Professional Constructor

The use of Building Information Models (BIM) for construction planning has increased in all areas except for automated processes such as quantity take-off. Many model users lack confidence that a model, typically created by a third party, has accurate enough information in it to rely on the data for planning the project. This research is looking at how factors of organization trust and variables related to project delivery can raise user confidence in these situations. Factors of organizational trust were identified through a literature review. Two surveys were utilized to identify which factors were significant in raising user confidence. Finally, …

Constructing Language Ideologies In A Multilingual, Second-Grade Classroom: A Case Study Of Two Emergent Bilingual Students’ Language-Use During Ebook Composing, Lindsey Rowe Aug 2019

Constructing Language Ideologies In A Multilingual, Second-Grade Classroom: A Case Study Of Two Emergent Bilingual Students’ Language-Use During Ebook Composing, Lindsey Rowe

Publications

Emergent bilingual students in the United States often attend schools that perpetuate English-only language ideologies. This article draws from qualitative data collected in a multilingual, second-grade classroom in the U.S. to explore how students co-constructed language ideologies across a schoolyear as they engaged in a daily eBook composing activity designed to counter the school's English-only policy and instead value the use of multiple languages. Conceptually, this paper draws upon the notion of language and literacy as social and ideological practices to demonstrate the ways students negotiated multiple, situated, and dynamic language ideologies about various heritage languages. Using data from two …

Does Location Matter? Evaluating The Influence Of Dual Enrollment Program Location On Noncognitive Measures Of College Readiness And Academic Performance: A Multiyear Study, Donald Galen Dehay

All Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was two-fold. First, this study examines whether differences exist in students' noncognitive readiness between non-dually enrolled students, dually-enrolled students on high school campuses, and dually-enrolled students on college campuses. Second, this study evaluates the relationship between noncognitive college readiness factors, dual enrollment program location, and students' first year college grade point average (GPA).

Poor college readiness has been a persistent issue in higher education, contributing to stagnant college retention and graduation rates. Community colleges deliver dual enrollment programs to improve college readiness and postsecondary academic outcomes. Dual enrollment participation has grown at a rapid …

Relict: Widows And Their Expressions Of Agency Through Personal Piety And Religious Devotion In Fifteenth-Century England, Mikkaela Beth Bailey Aug 2019

Relict: Widows And Their Expressions Of Agency Through Personal Piety And Religious Devotion In Fifteenth-Century England, Mikkaela Beth Bailey

All Theses

Widows who lived in fifteenth-century England present an interesting case study for their exercises of agency through personal piety because they are underrepresented in the historiographical discussion on this topic. This thesis focuses largely on widowed laywomen and the different ways in which they could access agency through personal piety and the legal system. The examination of their choices in donations, bequests, and other pious actions reveals widows’ ability to express themselves. The chief focus of this thesis are the ways in which widows’ actions of personal piety provided them with access points to agency, authority, and power. While there …

An Investigation Into The Use Of Yoga In Recreational Therapy Practice, Abby Wiles

All Theses

Yoga is used in healthcare with a variety of populations, but limited knowledge exists regarding credentials of yoga instructors, duration and frequency of sessions, style of yoga used in treatment, and how, where, and with what populations yoga is being used in Recreational Therapy (RT) practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe how yoga is currently used in RT practice.

As part of a nation-wide survey and individual interviews, this secondary analysis investigated how yoga is being used in RT practice across the United States. Sixteen recreational therapists completed both a nation-wide online survey and semi-structured …

War And Peace: Possibilities For A New History, Daniel John Thrift Aug 2019

War And Peace: Possibilities For A New History, Daniel John Thrift

All Theses

By piggybacking on the critiques of the historical discipline provided by Leo Tolstoy in his momentous novel, War and Peace, I assert that history may undergo a reconstruction. By ridding the historical discipline of the self-interest that has atrophied its ability to make a significant, positive impact on the world, and installing a metaphysics devoted to equality, freedom, and universality, I believe that it may be revitalized as a profession. I call for a new history, one built in the Hegelian-Marxist tradition, which will lead humanity into a future defined by love and self-sacrifice. It is a history explicitly opposed …

Online Disinhibition And Its Influence On Cyber Incivility, Alexander Francis Moore Aug 2019

Online Disinhibition And Its Influence On Cyber Incivility, Alexander Francis Moore

All Theses

The proliferation of telecommunication technology over the past three decades has redefined the nature of work for many. Today, employees may use such tools to work remotely, fulfilling some or all of their duties away from an office and their colleagues. Organizational researchers generally view remote work favorably, as it is tied to improvements in job satisfaction and performance. However, some behavioral researchers have identified online communication attitudes that are related to counternormative online behavior. Known as Online Disinhibition, these attitudes propagate low intensity interpersonal deviances that are analogous to what organizational researchers call Cyber-Incivility. Despite its relevance to deviance …

Phenomenological Insights Into The Recruitment Process Of International Soccer Student-Athletes, Jonathan David Sutherland Aug 2019

Phenomenological Insights Into The Recruitment Process Of International Soccer Student-Athletes, Jonathan David Sutherland

All Theses

The migration of male international soccer student-athletes to American collegiate institutions has seen an ascending trend of participation popularity. Using a phenomenological research design, I sought to gain an in-depth understanding of how male international soccer student-athletes experienced their recruitment processes with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institutions. Seventeen participants from various universities engaged with me in semi-structured in-depth interview conversations. Analysis of the information they shared, suggested five significant themes rooted in the communicative nature of the recruitment process: 1) Social Acceptance, 2) Sense of Belonging, 3) Acceptance vs Rejection, 4) The Incognizant Reality, and 5) Increase …

Signatures Of Relic Quantum Nonequilibrium, Nicolas Graeme Underwood Aug 2019

Signatures Of Relic Quantum Nonequilibrium, Nicolas Graeme Underwood

All Dissertations

This thesis explores the possibility that quantum probabilities arose thermodynamically. It considers both what is required of a quantum theory for this to happen, and empirical consequences if it is the case. A chief concern is the detection of primordial 'quantum nonequilibrium', since this is by definition observably distinct from textbook quantum physics. The mode of operation is almost exclusively quantum field theoretic, due to the nature of quantum nonequilibrium. Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5, are adaptations of references [1,2,3], and [4], respectively.

Chapter 2 proposes (information) entropy conservation as a minimal requirement for a theory to feature classical-style …

More Than Just Dictionaries: Exploring The Incorporation And Use Of Linguistically Inclusive Materials In A Middle School Library Media Center, Dwane Enrique Valera Aug 2019

More Than Just Dictionaries: Exploring The Incorporation And Use Of Linguistically Inclusive Materials In A Middle School Library Media Center, Dwane Enrique Valera

All Dissertations

The school library media center (SLMC) is a space in schools that can be overlooked when trying to reach students. The English language learner (ELL) population is a sector of the student population that is growing in the United States, and growing at faster rates in the state of South Carolina. With a growing population of ELL students, there are also misconceptions about the incorporation of native language materials in the academic setting. Being able to offer ELL students the opportunity to utilize their home languages can encourage the use of the SLMC. This study implemented an intervention to determine …

Creativity And Information Systems: A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation Of Creativity In Is, Jackie Patrick London Aug 2019

Creativity And Information Systems: A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation Of Creativity In Is, Jackie Patrick London

All Dissertations

Be productive. Since the industrial revolution, managers have had an almost singular focus on equipping employees with productivity tools in productivity-supportive environments. Information technologies—systems designed to increase productivity—entered the marketplace in the 1980's and were initially credited with the subsequent boom. Eventually, innovation was shown to be the primary spark, and the managerial focus shifted. Increasingly, the imperative is: be creative. This dissertation investigates how a technology environment designed to be fast and mechanistic influences the slow and organic act of creativity. Creativity—the production of novel and useful solutions—can be an elusive subject and has a varied history within Information …

Investigating The Effects Of School-Based Coaching On Teachers' Presentation Of Opportunities To Respond, Jennifer M. Counts

All Dissertations

Student misbehavior in the classroom results in lost teaching and learning time critical to positive outcomes for students at-risk for behavioral difficulties. Recent research has indicated coaching teachers in classroom management, in addition to quality professional development, increases teacher use of new classroom management practices and implementation fidelity. The current study examined the use of school-based coaches to support five teachers' implementation of opportunities to respond as a classroom management practice as well as student outcomes for five target students at-risk for behavior problems in the classroom. Results showed that school-based coaches were able to increase teacher use of opportunities …

Learning To Design Student-Centered Equitable Science Instruction: A Case Study Of A Social Design Experiment, Nikeetha Maryann Farfan Dsouza Aug 2019

Learning To Design Student-Centered Equitable Science Instruction: A Case Study Of A Social Design Experiment, Nikeetha Maryann Farfan Dsouza

All Dissertations

Equitable science instruction has been interpreted as instruction that recognizes, values and integrates students' culture and identity within science learning spaces. This is especially important for students who belong to non-dominant communities who have been marginalized by the practices of school and science. By prioritizing students' cultural practices and experiences, students who are often marginalized in science classrooms are brought to the forefront. Instruction that prioritizes students' lived experiences are student-centered and therefore equitable because they engage students in science learning that is meaningful and relevant to them and their communities. Despite this need of student-centered science instruction, it is …

A Strengths-Based Approach To Minority Youth Development: Examining Spirituality And Critical Consciousness As Predictors Of Positive Youth Development And Contribution In Youth Of Color, Emily Nicole Winburn

All Dissertations

Spirituality and critical consciousness have been linked to positive outcomes in the lives of youth of color. Spirituality is connection to a higher power or sense of profound meaning beyond everyday life (transcendence), devotion to their morals and beliefs (fidelity), and awareness of others needs and feelings (contribution) (King et al., 2017). Spirituality can support positive outcomes in youth such as contribution to their community and increased levels of positive youth development (PYD) (Furrow, King, & White, 2004). Critical consciousness is the ability to reflect and take action on inequalities and injustices in society and can provide marginalized and/or oppressed …

Twenty-First Century Noir: From Stieg Larsson’S Trilogy To Dolores Redondo’S Trilogy And Eva García Sáenz De Urturi’S Trilogy, Salvador Oropesa Jul 2019

Twenty-First Century Noir: From Stieg Larsson’S Trilogy To Dolores Redondo’S Trilogy And Eva García Sáenz De Urturi’S Trilogy, Salvador Oropesa

Publications

Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy has influenced twenty-first century Spanish noir, especially Dolores Redondo’s Baztán Trilogy and Eva García Sáenz de Urturi’s White City Trilogies. Larsson’s novels put mysoginy and its violent consequences at the center of noir and provided the development of constitutional rights as the solution to the problem. Following the logic of Western literature, all these texts use myths to make sense of modern problems. Pre-Christian mythology is presented as the root of contemporary evil acts. The novels warn their readers that the return to an ahistorical past and magic brings abomination and inordinate pain. In the …
