Blue Ridge Chateau: The Conceptual Design Evolution Of Biltmore House, R. Chad Stewart
Blue Ridge Chateau: The Conceptual Design Evolution Of Biltmore House, R. Chad Stewart
All Theses
This thesis explores the early conceptual designs for Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. Examining architect Richard Morris Hunt’s surviving floorplans, elevation drawings, and a handful of other renderings, this thesis chronicles the evolution of Biltmore House on the drafting tables of the Hunt office from a luxurious but typical colonial revival mansion into the largest house ever constructed in the United States. Additionally, the thesis explores the European precedents that inspired the design of Biltmore House by comparing its details with those of buildings frequently referenced as having inspired its design in several secondary sources. The result is a …
An Appetite For The Tasteless: An Evaluation Of Off-Color Humor In Adult Animations And Video Games, Presented Through A Proposed Interactive Narrative Via A Procedurally Generated Material Library, Mark William Keller
All Theses
Off-color humor has propelled adult animation into its Golden Age. The success of this genre has prompted media studios to begin developing original series for subscription video-on-demand services. The technology used for these over the top (OTT) streaming services have improved to the point that providers have begun developing cloud-based gaming. These improvements, along with developments in rendering systems, have made it possible to create interactive media across both video and gaming platforms using similar assets. This document will detail the successes of adult animation and the proposal for more interactive narrative media within this category. Accompanying the text will …

An Efficient Distance Tracking Algorithm Using Near-Infrared Light For Biomedical Applications, Steven Thomas Manz
An Efficient Distance Tracking Algorithm Using Near-Infrared Light For Biomedical Applications, Steven Thomas Manz
All Theses
In this article, a method for tracking distance between a medical scope and a subject is introduced. The method considers optical coherence of light scattering due to the topography of the subject and post-processing techniques to decrease high reflection interference. The application of distance tracking is extremely important in biomedical imaging because of the effect on variance and resolution due to a non-stationary scope. Near Infrared light is considered in this article because of the application to Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging in an emerging biomedical imaging field. Many scopes currently use time-of-flight sensors to track distance, but the increasing importance …
Reading With Daddy: Parent Gender, Joint Book Reading, And Emergent Literacy Growth, Julia Kate Bentley
Reading With Daddy: Parent Gender, Joint Book Reading, And Emergent Literacy Growth, Julia Kate Bentley
All Dissertations
For decades, educational researchers have reported joint book reading with caregivers promotes children’s emergent literacy development (Bus et al., 1995; Demir-Lira et al., 2019; NELP, 2008; Pelligrini et al., 1990). However, the bulk of this research has been conducted with mothers (Bingham, 2007; Bojczyk, 2016; Roberts et al., 2005). Mothers have been the focus of such research because, historically, the primary responsibility for caring for young children was placed on them (Fagot et al., 2012). Recent societal changes have resulted in fathers taking on more childcare roles (Banchefsky & Park, 2016). Yet, their contributions are rarely noted in literacy research. …
Investigating The Extent Of The Problem: Injury Epidemiology In Cross-Country And Track & Field, Christopher Lee Hopkins
Investigating The Extent Of The Problem: Injury Epidemiology In Cross-Country And Track & Field, Christopher Lee Hopkins
All Dissertations
This dissertation aims to explore the problem of injuries in high school and collegiate cross-country and track and field by systematically reviewing and analyzing data from previous epidemiologic studies, comparing injury rates from a large dataset of collegiate track and field injuries, examining the psychology of injury reporting among adolescent runners, and identifying directions for future research in the field of sports injury epidemiology. Cross-country and track and field are popular modes of physical activity for many adolescents, but as with many sports, they have inherent injury risks that may lead participants to quit or increase their risk of conditions …

The account @ZIENAAB_313 sent out a tweet with an accompanying photograph of a liquor store in flames behind a grimmly ironic silhouette waving an American flag. This stark image, although reported to be Arizona, captured an altogether different scene. A quick analysis of the photo and an image reference search reveals that the photo was from the George Floyd riots in Minnesota. The pairing of this quote and photo raises many questions regarding the authenticity of the account producing it, as well as its motives. The tweet was also being amplified and liked by accounts extremely similar in form and …

Dual Language Learning And Educational Success For Youth, Suzanne Menestrel
Journal of Youth Development
Effectively educating children and youth who are learning English as their second language is a national challenge with consequences both for individuals and for American society. Despite their potential, many English learners are struggling to meet the requirements for academic success jeopardizing their prospects for success in postsecondary education and the workforce. This article is based on a consensus report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Promoting the Educational Success of Children and Youth Learning English: Promising Futures published in 2017, and briefly reviews language development among dual language and English learners and the development of English …
Fulfilling The Promise Of Adolescence: Applying Developmental Knowledge To Create Systems Change, Dara Shefska, Emily Backes
Fulfilling The Promise Of Adolescence: Applying Developmental Knowledge To Create Systems Change, Dara Shefska, Emily Backes
Journal of Youth Development
Adolescence—beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20s—is a distinct developmental period marking the transition between early childhood and adulthood. Although adolescence is now understood as a period of exceptional learning and growth, it is still frequently characterized as a time of increased risk and vulnerability. This mischaracterization of adolescence, combined with the deeply rooted societal inequities, has left the promise of adolescence unrealized for too many youth. A recent report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine entitled The Promise of Adolescence: Realizing Opportunity for All Youth explores the socio-behavioral and neurobiological science of …

Hands Up, Now What?: Black Families’ Reactions To Racial Socialization Interventions, Riana Elyse Anderson, Isha Metzger, Kimberly Applewhite, Broderick Sawyer
Journal of Youth Development
Given the heightened national attention to negative race-related issues and the subsequent community solution-oriented outcry (e.g., Black Lives Matter movement), it is crucial to address healing from racial discrimination for Black Americans. Clinical and community psychologists have responded by developing and implementing programs that focus on racial socialization and psychological wellness, particularly given disproportionate issues with utilization, access, and the provision of quality services within urban and predominantly Black communities. The aim of this article is to describe 2 applied programs (Engaging, Managing, and Bonding through Race and Family Learning Villages), which seek to address and heal racial stress through …

Supporting Interests And Sharing Power: Insights From A Scottish Youth Program, Daniela Kruel Digiacomo
Journal of Youth Development
Light Up Learning (LUL) is a youth program in Scotland that supports young people in pursuing their curiosities and exploring their interests in a school-based informal learning setting. This article draws on interview and participant observation data to examine the social organization of teaching and learning activity within LUL. As a school-based program focused on supporting youth in pursuing their interests through the cultivation of a caring adult–youth relationship, LUL offers an empirical case that brings together insights from youth development and interest-driven learning research. Examination into the verbal and material interactions that shape adult–youth interactions yields insight into how …
