Bioleaching Of Arsenic From Agricultural Soils, Zachary Gilstrap Aug 2022

Bioleaching Of Arsenic From Agricultural Soils, Zachary Gilstrap

All Theses

Arsenic is a ubiquitous trace metalloid. However, increasing concentrations of arsenic in soil and water is a problem the world faces due to inputs from anthropogenic sources such as mining, milling, agriculture, and coal ash. One method of remediation for these arsenic-contaminated sites is bioleaching. While it is most often used to extract metals from raw ore, it is a viable and environmentally friendly method to remove the same metals from soil. Bioleaching removes metals by cultivating living organisms such as the fungi Aspergillus niger (A.niger) or the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (T.ferrooxidans). This research aimed to investigate A. …

A 3d Tissue Engineering Model To Study Mitral Valve Annulus Calcification Under Diabetic Conditions, Erin James Aug 2022

A 3d Tissue Engineering Model To Study Mitral Valve Annulus Calcification Under Diabetic Conditions, Erin James

All Theses

The most complex heart valve is the mitral valve (MV). Many pathologies can affect the MV, including stenosis, regurgitation, prolapse, and mitral annulus calcification (MAC). MAC is chronic degeneration of the annulus, which is the fibrous, saddle-shaped “ring” that can contract and relax with the myocardium. The prevalence of MAC is around 15% but increases in patients with other cardiovascular diseases and risk factors. It is also thought to increase in patients with type 2 diabetes, but MAC has not been properly characterized within this population because of confounding factors such as cardiac disease and kidney disease. The goal of …

Park Equity Modeling: A Case Study Of Asheville, North Carolina, Anisa Young Aug 2022

Park Equity Modeling: A Case Study Of Asheville, North Carolina, Anisa Young

All Theses

Parks and greenspaces are publicly available entities that serve the vital purpose of promoting multiple aspects of human welfare. Unfortunately, the existence of park disparities is commonplace within the park setting. Specifically, marginalized individuals encounter limited park access, insufficient amenity provision, and poor maintenance. To remedy these disparities, we propose a process in which we select candidate park facilities and utilize facility location models to determine the optimal primary parks from both existing and candidate sites.

We note that platforms currently exist to identify the geographical areas where residents lack sufficient access to parks. However, these platforms do not yet …

Spring Gobbling Chronology And Turkey Habitat Use In Upstate South Carolina, Janelle Grehan Aug 2022

Spring Gobbling Chronology And Turkey Habitat Use In Upstate South Carolina, Janelle Grehan

All Theses

Wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a highly popular game species harvested primarily during the reproductive season, which has driven substantial efforts to understand patterns of springtime habitat use and gobbling activity. Autonomous recording units (ARUs) have enabled researchers to collect unprecedented amounts of gobbling data, yet post hoc processing of audio data has been time-intensive due to false detection rates. Gobbling activity has been studied in the South Carolina Coastal Plain, but data for the Upstate are lacking. My objectives were to assess seasonal and weekly gobbling activity and turkey habitat use in Upstate South Carolina relative to …

The Physical Properties And Handling Characteristics Of Pelletized Biomass Materials, Ryan Dean Aug 2022

The Physical Properties And Handling Characteristics Of Pelletized Biomass Materials, Ryan Dean

All Theses

Biomass and feed pellets can be handled and stored using similar equipment used for other bulk materials; however, their unique physical characteristics can lead to handling challenges. Understanding the flow characteristics of these materials is essential for handling and storage system design, but these characteristics are not well defined in less-than-ideal conditions. The overall objective of this study was to evaluate how moisture content and level of fines influence the angle of repose (AoR) of hardwood, pine bedding, and feed pellets along with determining the impacts of displacement on the shear stress of fuel pellets utilizing a modified linear wall …

A Comparative Study Of Physical Cinematography That Influences Layouts In Animated Production, Daniel C. Hudson Aug 2022

A Comparative Study Of Physical Cinematography That Influences Layouts In Animated Production, Daniel C. Hudson

All Theses

What makes good cinematography? There are many examples of cinematogra- phy that stand out in the minds of viewers, yet many cant exactly say with certainty why these shots are considered great. Is it because they convey the visual and emo- tional content of their stories successfully, the technical brilliance of the frame, or both? Whether realistic or exaggerated, the range of cinematography tools and tech- niques are proof that creativity and an eye for detail are the most important elements in great cinematography. Cinematography includes composition, movement, lighting, and other visual information within the frame. This is true in …

Evaluating The Impact Of Intersecting Research And Outreach Marine Science Programs On Elementary And Undergraduate Students, Randi J. Sims

All Theses

Climate change is one of the most destructive forces our ocean is currently experiencing. Despite this, many students are not taught the basics of climate change science and ocean literacy in public school systems. My work seeks to combat these deficits through educational experiences in marine science for undergraduate and local elementary students through three studies incorporating marine-science based research and outreach. (1) Through undergraduate marine science research and outreach, students enrolled for long durations or with positive mentorship increased their conceptual understanding of marine science concepts, altered their attitudes towards climate change and science, and were more likely to …

The Presence And Distribution Of Crotoxin In The Rock Rattlesnake (Crotalus Lepidus), Jade Mellor Aug 2022

The Presence And Distribution Of Crotoxin In The Rock Rattlesnake (Crotalus Lepidus), Jade Mellor

All Theses

Crotoxin and its homologs (hereafter all referred to as CTx) is a highly lethal heterodimeric beta-neurotoxin found in pitvipers (Crotalinae) and is the main driver of neurotoxic venom phenotypes (Type II). In contrast, hemorrhagic venom phenotypes (Type I) are characterized by high snake venom metalloproteinase expression and low toxicity. Although many rattlesnake species have been classified as either Type I or Type II, population level variation in venom phenotype has also been documented in several species. The presence or absence of CTx is the main component of this variation in venom phenotype and has been most widely studied in large-bodied …

“I Held On At Any Price”: Victim Self-Preservation In The Sonderkommando In Auschwitz And Treblinka, Jessica Christina Foster Aug 2022

“I Held On At Any Price”: Victim Self-Preservation In The Sonderkommando In Auschwitz And Treblinka, Jessica Christina Foster

All Theses

Many Holocaust victims have expressed uneasiness or even shame regarding the actions they took to stay alive in the death camps. These acts of self-preservation were usually humiliating and often came at the expense of their fellow victims. This comes out most clearly in the testimonies of the members of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz and Treblinka. Writers such as Filip Müller, Zalmen Gradowski, and Richard Glazar recount how they survived the lethal environment of the camp by appropriating the food, clothing, and valuables of the people murdered in the gas chambers. Although most scholars have interpreted these testimonies, and the …

The Forgotten Faith: The Experiences Of Enslaved Muslims And The Influence Of Islam In The United States From 1730-1864, Amani Altwam Aug 2022

The Forgotten Faith: The Experiences Of Enslaved Muslims And The Influence Of Islam In The United States From 1730-1864, Amani Altwam

All Theses

Muslims were present in North America before the establishment of the

American/British colonies. The first Muslims in America were not citizens, but

enslaved Africans forced into the slave trade in the eighteenth century. Muslim slaves

in America were much more prevalent than anyone could have imagined and yet, the

religion of these slaves was rarely ever brought to the surface. In this thesis, I argue

that Muslim slaves not only existed in America but most of them were literate in

multiple languages, well-educated, and were capable of holding on to a set of beliefs.

History books and previous literature have …

Improved Molecular Detection Tools For The Invasive Crop Pest Helicoverpa Armigera (Hübner), Mitchell D. Rich Aug 2022

Improved Molecular Detection Tools For The Invasive Crop Pest Helicoverpa Armigera (Hübner), Mitchell D. Rich

All Theses

Helicoverpa armigera is a major crop pest native to Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. H. armigera has recently invaded South America and has caused billions of dollars in agricultural losses. It is difficult to differentiate H. armigera from H. zea, a closely-related species native to North and South America. A few genetic tests have been previously developed to detect H. armigera DNA in pooled samples of moth legs. In this study, an improved qPCR melt curve assay with higher detection sensitivity and a field-based recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay were developed for specific detection of H. armigera DNA …

Tissue-Engineered Living Pulmonary Valve For Young Adult Patients, Erica Hoskins Aug 2022

Tissue-Engineered Living Pulmonary Valve For Young Adult Patients, Erica Hoskins

All Theses

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a non-communicable disease responsible for 659,000 deaths annually in the United States. While CVD can affect all components of the cardiovascular system, heart valve disease is responsible for 25,000 deaths yearly. Of specific interest is the pulmonary valve since there is limited research on resolving pathologies that affect it. Like the aortic and mitral valves, common pathologies include stenosis, regurgitation, and atresia. Notably, the pulmonary valve requires repair and replacement in pediatric patients and young adults due to congenital disabilities. Even with technological advances in valve replacements, limitations still present themselves for use with younger patients …

Exploring Visitor Perceptions Of Popular Culture Tourism In Sleepy Hollow, New York, Danielle Baker Kreh Aug 2022

Exploring Visitor Perceptions Of Popular Culture Tourism In Sleepy Hollow, New York, Danielle Baker Kreh

All Theses

Popular culture tourism can present itself in many forms including travel based on popular literature, film, and television series. Popular culture tourism destinations exist from the assumption that tourists wish to visit destinations based on their popular culture connections. In fact, destinations may choose to emphasize their popular culture connections for the purpose of attracting more visitors. Such is the case with Sleepy Hollow, New York, which has many popular culture connections including the original short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. Using the village of Sleepy Hollow as an example, the purpose of this study is …

Using In Vitro, In Silico, And In-Classroom Techniques To Address The Gender Data Gap In Health Care, Kelsey Watts Aug 2022

Using In Vitro, In Silico, And In-Classroom Techniques To Address The Gender Data Gap In Health Care, Kelsey Watts

All Dissertations

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide in males (XY) and females (XX). Prior to menopause, females have a relative protection against serious cardiac pathologies compared to age-matched males. This phenomenon is widely attributed to the ovarian hormone estrogen. Unfortunately, hormone replacement therapy to maintain estrogen levels in postmenopausal females has overall adverse effects, and it is not recommended for long-term use or as a preventative measure for eCVDs. A major driver of CVDs, specifically heart failure, is cardiac fibrosis: the continued buildup of scar tissue that reduces the heart’s ability to pump. There are currently no …

Reading Toward Breath: A Poetic Ecology Of Creative Reading, Jessica Schad Manuel Aug 2022

Reading Toward Breath: A Poetic Ecology Of Creative Reading, Jessica Schad Manuel

All Dissertations

Reading is an act of perception that begins in wonder and leads to wisdom. It is not a response to writing but a response-ability we have to interact with the world around us and the phenomena before us. Reading with the body leads to wisdom, and when we participate in our existence by being in the world, we are reading. So what is reading? Reading is making. We make connections, and we form relationships. The act of reading is more than a cognitive process and even surpasses the phenomenological encounter.

My research describes the reader’s relationship to the text as …

Heat Stress Response And Excystation In Entamoeba Histolytica, Irem Bastuzel Aug 2022

Heat Stress Response And Excystation In Entamoeba Histolytica, Irem Bastuzel

All Dissertations

Entamoeba histolytica is a water- and food-borne intestinal protozoan parasite that causes amoebiasis and liver abscess and is responsible for symptomatic disease in approximately 100 million people each year leading to ~ 100,000 deaths. The most common disease transmission follows the oral-fecal route, but it can also be transmitted by mechanical vectors such as animals carrying the amoeba from contaminated sources to water systems. In rare cases, disease transmission has been recorded in some patients in which men-to-men sexual practices were preferred.

The life cycle of E. histolytica starts through ingestion of infectious cysts, which are non-dividing, quadri-nucleated structures surrounded …

Understanding Vascular Pathologies In Diabetes: Optimizing Tissue Engineered Blood Vessels Resistant To Diabetic Complications, Bethany Lefeber Aug 2022

Understanding Vascular Pathologies In Diabetes: Optimizing Tissue Engineered Blood Vessels Resistant To Diabetic Complications, Bethany Lefeber

All Dissertations

Diabetes Mellitus, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, currently affects 463 million people, or 9.3% of the world’s population – with numbers estimated to reach 578 million people by 2030. Hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation, major manifestations of diabetes, together, significantly increase the risk of vascular tissue damage. Vascular damage is primarily caused by the interaction of cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) components with the elevated levels of glucose and lipids circulating through the blood and in the ECM. ECM proteins, such as elastin and collagen, are subject to glycation and crosslinking via advanced glycation end products (AGE) …

Unlocking The Pediatric Transcriptome: A Combinatorial Approach For Total Rna Analysis, William Schleif Aug 2022

Unlocking The Pediatric Transcriptome: A Combinatorial Approach For Total Rna Analysis, William Schleif

All Dissertations

The transcriptome is an oft-studied target in the pursuit to better understand the functional elements of the human genome as part of genomic research. The transcriptome possesses its own unique set of challenges that hamper utilization of RNA-based discoveries and translation into actionable findings. Scientific progress thus far has expanded annotated reference genes for protein-coding and non-coding (nc) regulatory transcripts, yet much of the variation from splicing events or retention of other regions remain an open challenge, especially in children. This dissertation explores the current state of diagnostic and methodological barriers in front of the full unlocking of the transcriptome, …

Drawn To Life: A Common Theory Of Making, J. Ryan Garner

All Dissertations

My research pivots around questions of making, its importance to all of life, and the challenges it faces in the contemporary world. The research is grounded in simple questions such as: what is making, what are its instruments, and can we do it on purpose? I approach these questions as if through binoculars. With one eye, I want to establish an account of making that is plain and somewhat quotidian. This will ensure the long-term viability of my study. With the other eye, I look for an account of making that is theoretically substantial and thoroughly vigorous. I apply …

Just Around The Corner: The Impact Of Instruction Method And Corner Geometry On Teleoperation Of Virtual Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Hannah Solini Aug 2022

Just Around The Corner: The Impact Of Instruction Method And Corner Geometry On Teleoperation Of Virtual Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Hannah Solini

All Dissertations

Teleoperated robots have proven useful across various domains, as they can more readily search for survivors, survey collapsed and structurally unsound buildings, map out safe routes for rescue workers, and monitor rescue environments. A significant drawback of these robots is that they require the operator to perceive the environment indirectly. As such, camera angles, uneven terrain, lighting, and other environmental conditions can result in robots colliding with obstacles, getting stuck in rubble, and falling over (Casper & Murphy, 2003). To better understand how operators remotely perceive and navigate unmanned ground vehicles, the present work investigated operators’ abilities to negotiate corners …

Radioluminescence Based Biochemical Sensing And Imaging Strategies To Measure Local Drug Release And Ph, Gretchen B. Schober Aug 2022

Radioluminescence Based Biochemical Sensing And Imaging Strategies To Measure Local Drug Release And Ph, Gretchen B. Schober
