Material World, Nicole Weldy
Material World, Nicole Weldy
All Theses
My thesis, Material World, delves into the use of the crochet unit as a construction technique for building forms. Through this, I aim to organize different materials in a way that responds to the challenges posed by the physical world. My artistic process is centered around honoring the inherent qualities of thread and uses these qualities to create form, lightness, and linearity. At the same time, I remain receptive to transformative processes such as combining three-dimensional (3D) printed lines and lace stiffener to push the boundaries of what thread can do. By combining manual craftsmanship with technology materialized as …
Effect Of Storage Temperatures And Home Refrigeration Systems On The Shelf Life Of Frozen Desserts, Natalie Sinclair
Effect Of Storage Temperatures And Home Refrigeration Systems On The Shelf Life Of Frozen Desserts, Natalie Sinclair
All Theses
The effect of storage temperature over 12 weeks was studied using dairy and non-dairy frozen desserts. Research was conducted to determine if higher freezer temperatures affect frozen dessert quality to reduce energy use associated with lower freezer temperatures. Samples were analyzed for ice crystal pore size using micrographs, grittiness by a trained sensory panel and weight loss during storage. Ice crystal size was determined using scanning electron microscopy and grittiness was measured on a 5-point ranking scale, with 1 being least gritty and 5 being most gritty. Weight loss was determined by measuring sample weights before and after the 12-week …
Biochemical And Kinetic Analysis Of Phosphofructokinase In The Eukaryotic Human Pathogen Entamoeba Histolytica, Jin Cho
All Dissertations
Entamoeba histolytica is a water- and food-borne intestinal parasite that causes amoebiasis and liver abscess in ~100 million people each year leading to ~100,000 deaths. This amitochondriate parasite lacks many metabolic pathways including the tricarboxylic acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, and cannot synthesize purines, pyrimidines, or most amino acids. As a result, E. histolytica is presumed to rely on its modified pyrophosphate (PPi)-dependent glycolytic pathway for ATP production during growth on glucose. This pathway relies on a PPi-dependent rather than ATP-dependent phosphofructokinase (PFK) and thus has a net production of three ATP per glucose. However, in …
Structural Characterization Of Cardiomyocyte Microenvironment In Murine Myocardium By Multimodal Stimulated Emission Depletion Microscopy, Zhao Zhang
All Dissertations
Cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, is characterized by structural and functional abnormalities of the myocardium, in the absence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular disease or congenital heart disease. In 2020, there were approximately 6.11 million prevalent cases of cardiomyopathy and myocarditis, and 0.37 million related deaths worldwide. Many affected individuals are asymptomatic, and chronically treated patients are at risk of heart failure. Within the myocardium, cardiomyocytes reside in a complex and dynamic extracellular matrix (ECM), consisting of basement membrane and interstitial matrix. The interactions between cardiomyocytes and myocardial ECM play a critical role in maintaining cardiac geometry …
A Digital Triplet For Utilizing Offline Environments To Train Condition Monitoring Systems For Rolling Element Bearings, Ethan Wescoat
A Digital Triplet For Utilizing Offline Environments To Train Condition Monitoring Systems For Rolling Element Bearings, Ethan Wescoat
All Dissertations
Manufacturing competitiveness is related to making a quality product while incurring the lowest costs. Unexpected downtime caused by equipment failure negatively impacts manufacturing competitiveness due to the ensuing defects and delays caused by the downtime. Manufacturers have adopted condition monitoring (CM) techniques to reduce unexpected downtime to augment maintenance strategies. The CM adoption has transitioned maintenance from Breakdown Maintenance (BM) to Condition-Based Maintenance (CbM) to anticipate impending failures and provide maintenance actions before equipment failure. CbM is the umbrella term for maintenance strategies that use condition monitoring techniques such as Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM). Preventive Maintenance involves …
Engineering Next-Generation Cardiovascular Therapies, Ryan Walker Barrs
Engineering Next-Generation Cardiovascular Therapies, Ryan Walker Barrs
All Dissertations
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Heart disease, in particular, accounted for 1 in every 5 deaths in the United States in 2021, representing a substantial public health burden that will require more effective treatment options to alleviate. Heart transplant surgery is currently the only option to completely restore cardiac function, but many patients die while waiting for a transplant due to a longstanding organ donor shortage. Thus, there is a dire need for accessible treatment options that can repair damaged hearts. Recent advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have accelerated the development of therapies for …
Experimental And Computational Platforms For Studying Systems Mechanobiology, Brendyn Miller
Experimental And Computational Platforms For Studying Systems Mechanobiology, Brendyn Miller
All Dissertations
Mechanical stimulation through physical activity has been shown to play an important role in treating and preventing several non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, lower back pain (LBP), type-2 diabetes mellitus, and several cancers. This is accomplished through the regulation of cellular behavior and tissue remodeling within the body at both the micro- and macro-scale levels. The goal of mechanobiology research is to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of how cells sense physical forces in conjunction with other biochemical cues and translate those factors into important biological functions that either maintain tissue homeostasis or lead to pathological states. Understanding these processes …
Cellular Mechanism Of Pentagalloyl Glucose-Mediated Prevention And Reversal Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Greg Halsey
Cellular Mechanism Of Pentagalloyl Glucose-Mediated Prevention And Reversal Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Greg Halsey
All Dissertations
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has been the 15th leading cause of death in persons older than 55 for the past ten years in several Western countries, with rupture resulting in an almost 100% mortality rate. AAA is a focal dilation of the aorta characterized by progressive loss of elastin and vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs), as well as persistent inflammatory response [1]. The only treatment for AAA is surgery; however, the mortality post-procedure is still 1-4%, with a 15-30% chance of morbidity [2].
Pentagalloyl glucose (PGG) treatment is effective in the reversal of AAA. While its stabilizing interactions with extracellular …
Addressing Mercury Contamination From Artisanal Gold Mining In Colombia: Pollution Exposure, Health Risk, And Educational Efforts In The Communities Of La Toma, Colombia, Kelli Mccourt
All Dissertations
Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) has become a primary environmental and public health concern in the region of Colombia known as Alto Cauca. The predominantly Afro-descendent communities of Yolombó and La Toma in Alto Cauca have experienced pollution linked to the use of mercury in the ASGM process. For the past decade, mercury has emerged as a contaminant of increasing concern in the communities due to its toxicity and ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify. Likewise, mining in the region raises concerns over the leaching of metals into local waters. Given the complexity of risk and pollution in the communities, …

Characterization Of The Effects Of The Pyrazolopyrimidine Inhibitor Grassofermata (Nav-2729) In The Eukaryotic Pathogen Trypanosoma Brucei, Kristina Marie Parman
All Dissertations
The protozoan pathogen, Trypanosoma brucei, is the causative agent of sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in livestock in sub-Saharan Africa. T. brucei cycles between tsetse fly and mammalian hosts, and it is adapted to survive in diverse host tissues. Variant Surface Glycoprotein (VSG) plays a key role in immune evasion in the mammalian host. The VSG membrane anchor requires two myristates, 14-carbon saturated fatty acids (FAs) that are scarce in the host. T. brucei can synthesize FAs de novo, but also readily takes up exogenous FAs, despite lacking homologs to fatty acid uptake proteins found in other …
Influence Of Photoreactor Design Parameters On The Performance Of Ultraviolet Light-Induced Degradation Of Per-And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances By Bismuth Oxy Hydroxy Phosphate And Hexagonal Boron Nitride Photocatalystsinfluence Of Photoreactor Design Parameters On The Performance Of Ultraviolet Light-Induced Degradation Of Per-And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances By Bismuth Oxy Hydroxy Phosphate And Hexagonal Boron Nitride Photocatalysts, Mojtaba Qanbarzadeh
All Dissertations
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the practical applicability of heterogeneous photocatalysis technology powered by ultraviolet (UV) photons for the degradation of per and -polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in contaminated groundwater samples. For this purpose, bismuth oxyhydroxy phosphate (BOHP) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) were utilized as the main photocatalysts in slurry photodegradation systems. BOHP (Bi3O(OH)(PO4)2) is a wide bandgap semiconductor with high activity for degrading long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) in mild operational conditions. Boron nitride (BN) is another wide bandgap semiconductor material that was used in this study due to its …
Citrate Hydrogels For Regenerative Medicine Applications, Mark Pitman
Citrate Hydrogels For Regenerative Medicine Applications, Mark Pitman
All Dissertations
Regenerative medicine focuses on restoring cells and tissues to re-establish proper function. Hydrogels are a customizable and adaptable set of materials that can be engineered as tools for regenerative medicine. My research has focused on developing and applying biomaterials to spinal cord injury and chronic wounds. Spinal cord injury and chronic wounds share pathophysiological issues with oxidative stress, excess free, and macrophage polarization. Furthermore, both conditions lack robust, effective treatments. We hypothesized that citrate hydrogels – hydrogels that contain citric acid as a functional component – would provide radical scavenging and iron chelation that would benefit both conditions. The hydrogels …
Integrated Techniques To Identify And Characterize Resistance To Fusarium Wilt Caused By Fusarium Oxysporum, F. Sp. Vasinfectum Race 4 In Two Domesticated Gossypium Species, Stephen Parris
All Dissertations
Fusarium wilt of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum and G. barbadense), caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum race 4 (FOV4), is the most threatening disease faced by today’s cotton breeders. During the past 20 years, over $7 million have been dedicated to efforts in breeding upland cotton for resistance to FOV4 while yielding little to no results. To counteract this, we conducted a study in Clint, TX, that utilized control plots and geostatistical methods to adjust phenotypic data for the heterogeneous distribution of FOV4 in the field, improving the accuracy of genetic resistance assessments. Concurrently, early-generation genetic mapping in …
Assessing Chondrocyte Viability Of Articular Cartilage Using Label-Free Imaging Methods, Hongming Fan
Assessing Chondrocyte Viability Of Articular Cartilage Using Label-Free Imaging Methods, Hongming Fan
All Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Articular cartilage covers the ends of bones, providing a protective layer that can endure forces during movement. Chondrocytes, the only cell type found in articular cartilage, produce collagen fibers and proteoglycans that maintain the extracellular matrix (ECM). Cartilage damage impairs chondrocytes and their ability to maintain tissue stability. There are various factors that can cause cell death, which can be broadly classified into two categories: programmed cell death (apoptosis) and non-programmed cell death (necrosis). The consequences of cell death can have significant impacts on the extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM is a complex network of proteins and carbohydrates that …
An In Vitro Platform To Characterize Myocardial Wound Remodeling, Jonathan Heywood
An In Vitro Platform To Characterize Myocardial Wound Remodeling, Jonathan Heywood
All Dissertations
Heart Failure, sometimes called Congestive Heart Failure, is a collection of pathological disruptions in which the heart is unable to pump blood properly. It affects over 6 million people in the United States, with the cost-per-patient at approximately $30,000 and the total cost estimated to be $160 billion by 2030. There is no single cause of heart failure, as it can manifest as a varying array of diseases, disorders, and syndromes. However, many of these underlying diseases result specifically from dysregulation of mechanically active cells called cardiac fibroblasts, which play a critical role in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix …

A Burkean Herstory: Liminal Narratives In The Life And Work Of Kenneth Burke, Heather F. Hartness
A Burkean Herstory: Liminal Narratives In The Life And Work Of Kenneth Burke, Heather F. Hartness
All Dissertations
Women’s contributions to the world are mostly absent from the traditional historical narrative. Who is anonymous and what is invisible often proves challenging and difficult to imagine. We build our understanding of possibilities from what we learn, read, and see. Half of the world’s population accounting for less than one-fifth of historical narratives indicates a liminal chasm; notable people are missing from history. Time marches on, and if the contributions of historically marginalized people continue to be silenced, their contributions will continue to be invisible and unvalued. Histories and herstories are not neutral accounts. Even though most histories are partial, …

Delineating The Impact Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Abca1/G1 And Mir-33a Expression On Atherosclerosis, Olanrewaju Oladosu
All Dissertations
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide due to being the predominant factor in heart attack and stroke deaths. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is caused by cholesterol accumulating in arteries. It is historically thought that the cell type most responsible for causing atherosclerosis via excessive cholesterol accumulation is intimal monocyte-derived macrophages. However, macrophage-like cells (MLC) of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) origin have now been proposed as another cell type to trigger atherosclerosis, since VSMC cholesterol accumulation results in these cells to trans-differentiate into a MLC phenotype. Three major genes involved in cholesterol metabolism are ABCA1, ABCG1, and …
An Integrative Approach To Managing A Species Of Conservation Concern: Resource Selection, Spatial Ecology, And Population Genetics Of The Green Salamander (Aneides Aeneus), Megan Novak
All Dissertations
The relationship between wildlife and the environment they inhabit is dependent on both spatial and temporal scales. It is therefore crucial that biological investigations account for ecological scale when analyzing patterns and processes established, particularly when such investigations inform conservation management plans. This dissertation provides extensive insight into the conservation biology of the green salamander (Aneides aeneus), a critically imperiled species in South Carolina. The green salamander is a species that exists in a patchy network of rock outcrops within mountainous forest landscapes, and most studies on habitat suitability for green salamanders have been conducted on the macrohabitat, …
Understanding The Interaction Of Environmental Contaminants With Polystyrene Nanoparticles And Dna Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Density Functional Theory, Saduni Arachchi
All Dissertations
The objective of the thesis is to study the effect of environmental pollutants on polystyrene nanoparticles and biomolecules. This is done in two different techniques, particularly NMR and density functional theory. In this thesis, we use a combination of 1H NMR, Saturation-Transfer Difference (STD) NMR and relaxation experiments to study the interactions, kinetics and dynamics of antibiotics with polystyrene nanoparticles. (PS NPs) Density functional theory (DFT) is used to study the binding of commonly used non-oxidative hair dyes to biomolecules (DNA and amino acids) and PS particles.
