Scar, a member of the WASp protein family, was discovered in Dictyostelium discoideum during a genetic screen for second-site mutations that suppressed a developmental defect. Disruption of the scar gene reduced the levels of cellular F-actin by 50%. To investigate the role of Scar in endocytosis, phagocytosis and endocytic membrane trafficking, processes that depend on actin polymerization, we have analyzed a Dictyostelium cell line that is genetically null for Scar. Rates of fluid phase macropinocytosis and phagocytosis are significantly reduced in the scar- cell-line. In addition, exocytosis of fluid phase is delayed in these cells and movement of fluid phase …

Multimedia And Engaged Reading In A Digital World, David Reinking
Multimedia And Engaged Reading In A Digital World, David Reinking
Publications
Anyone who has spent more than a few minutes “surfing the ‘net” has an intuitive awareness of how different it feels to encounter textual information in a digital as opposed to a typographic environment. The inert features of the printed page that make reading essentially a solitary psycholinguistic process and only incidentally a visual one, as Goodman argued many years ago, are transformed on the computer screen to make reading more dynamic, more interactive, more essentially visual, and even auditory. In comparison, the experience of reading printed materials, especially books, as Richard Lanham (1993) has argued, is static, silent, introspective, …

Mechanics Of Limb Bone Loading During Terrestrial Locomotion In The Green Iguana (Iguana Iguana) And American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), R. W. Blob, A. A. Biewener
Mechanics Of Limb Bone Loading During Terrestrial Locomotion In The Green Iguana (Iguana Iguana) And American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), R. W. Blob, A. A. Biewener
Publications
In vivo measurements of strain in the femur and tibia of Iguana iguana (Linnaeus) and Alligator mississippiensis (Daudin) have indicated three ways in which limb bone loading in these species differs from patterns observed in most birds and mammals: (i) the limb bones of I. iguana and A. mississippiensis experience substantial torsion, (ii) the limb bones of I. iguana and A. mississippiensis have higher safety factors than those of birds or mammals, and (iii) load magnitudes in the limb bones of A. mississippiensis do not decrease uniformly with the use of a more upright posture. To verify these patterns, and …
Comparative Kinematics Of The Forelimb During Swimming In Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys Scripta) And Spiny Softshell (Apalone Spinifera) Turtles, Cinnamon M. Pace, Richard W. Blob, Mark W. Westneat
Comparative Kinematics Of The Forelimb During Swimming In Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys Scripta) And Spiny Softshell (Apalone Spinifera) Turtles, Cinnamon M. Pace, Richard W. Blob, Mark W. Westneat
Publications
Softshell turtles (Family Trionychidae) possess extensive webbing between the digits of the manus, suggesting that the forelimb may serve as an effective thrust generator during aquatic locomotion. However, the hindlimb has previously been viewed as the dominant propulsive organ in swimming freshwater turtles. To evaluate the potential role of the forelimb in thrust production during swimming in freshwater turtles, we compared the forelimb morphology and three-dimensional forelimb kinematics of a highly aquatic trionychid turtle, the spiny softshell Apalone spinifera, and a morphologically generalized emydid turtle, the red-eared slider Trachemys scripta. Spiny softshells possess nearly twice as much forelimb surface area …

Microsatellite Dna Diversity And Paternity Determination In A Captive Population Of Radiated Tortoises (Geochelone Radiata), Jennifer Leigh Mook
Microsatellite Dna Diversity And Paternity Determination In A Captive Population Of Radiated Tortoises (Geochelone Radiata), Jennifer Leigh Mook
All Theses
In the present study, five microsatellite loci are used to examine genetic diversity and determine genetic similarities among 66 radiated tortoises (Geochelone radiata) located in ten different zoos and institutions in the United States. These tortoises, representatives of one of the world's most endangered species, were originally collected in Madagascar and are being used as founders in the development of an organized breeding program, the radiated tortoise Species Survival Plan (SSP). Parentage analysis was also conducted for 13 juvenile tortoises of uncertain parentage from two institutions. Founder tortoises demonstrated high levels of genetic diversity at the five loci …

System And Process For Treating Animal Waste, Annel K. Greene, Charles S. Knight
System And Process For Treating Animal Waste, Annel K. Greene, Charles S. Knight
Clemson Patents
The present invention is generally directed to a process and system for treating animal waste. More particularly, the present invention is directed to a process and system for treating animal waste effluent with ozone to decompose the organic material within and improve the odor of the animal waste. The process of the present invention also reduces biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total bacterial content and coliform bacterial count of the animal waste. The process of this present invention comprises collecting an animal waste solution, containing a mixture of water and animal fecal material; contacting the waste solution with ozone …

Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande
Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande
All Theses
Phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is inconsistent and the microbial mechanisms involved are unclear. We evaluated the effect of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and P availability on the degradation of pyrene (600mg kg-1 dry soil) in the top 7.5-cm of a Cecil sandy loam (fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kanhapludults) over a 10-month experiment under field conditions in Clemson, SC. Changes associated with the soil microbial community were also evaluated. Plastic canopies were installed to prevent leaching and raindrop dispersion of pyrene. Treatment factors were pyrene, vegetation, and available P levels in a complete factorial experiment with four replications. …
