Nebraska 4-H Household Technology And Interest Survey, Bradley S. Barker, Debra K. Meier Sep 2006

Nebraska 4-H Household Technology And Interest Survey, Bradley S. Barker, Debra K. Meier

Journal of Youth Development

Nationally, 4-H has placed renewed emphasis in the areas of Science and Technology as a way to prepare youth for the 21st century workplace. Home access may become necessary to youth as they develop science and technology literacy via 4-H programs. A survey was sent to a random sample of 1,414 Nebraska families from a total population of 13,516. The survey examined the percentage of families that have access to computers and the Internet at home, computer components, use characteristics and specific areas of interest in science and technology. Results indicate that 96 percent of Nebraska 4-H families have access …

The Great Plains Network (Gpn) Middleware Test Bed, Amy Apon, Gregory Monaco, Gordon Springer Sep 2006

The Great Plains Network (Gpn) Middleware Test Bed, Amy Apon, Gregory Monaco, Gordon Springer

Publications

GPN (Great Plains Network) is a consortium of public universities in seven mid-western states. GPN goals include regional strategic planning and the development of a collaboration environment, middleware services and a regional grid for sharing computational, storage and data resources. A major challenge is to arrive at a common authentication and authorization service, based on the set of heterogeneous identity providers at each institution. GPN has built a prototype middleware test bed that includes Shibboleth and other NMI-EDIT middleware components. The test bed includes several prototype end-user applications, and is being used to further our research into fine-grained access control …

Woolf And The Art Of Exploration, Helen Southworth, Elisa Kay Sparks Jan 2006

Woolf And The Art Of Exploration, Helen Southworth, Elisa Kay Sparks

Woolf Selected Papers

Coinciding with the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's Expedition, the wide range of papers presented at this conference emphasized the adventurousness of Woolf's work. Nearly 30 essays were selected for publication that reflect her enterprising nature, with titles such as Cheryl Mares's "The Making of Virginia Woolf's America" and Emily Wittman's "The Decline and Fall of Rachel Vinrace: Reading Gibbon in Virginia Woolf's The Voyage Out." The selected papers explore such topics as Woolf's life; her relationship to nature and to scientific and environmental thinking; her attitudes towards London, America, and the Middle East; and the cultural origins and contexts …

Growing Up Cartoonist In The Baby-Boom South: A Memoir And Cartoon Retrospective, Kate Salley Palmer Jan 2006

Growing Up Cartoonist In The Baby-Boom South: A Memoir And Cartoon Retrospective, Kate Salley Palmer

Monographs

Kate Salley Palmer was an inadvertent trailblazer. In the early 1970s, she was a freelance artist living in Clemson, South Carolina. Then the nationally televised Watergate hearings took hold of her, and she found herself drawing cartoon after cartoon about the scandal, whose latest developments she followed as religiously as other people follow soap operas. She started selling a few of the cartoons she couldn't stop drawing to whatever local newspapers would buy them. In 1975, The Greenville News hired her part-time. She was, it turned out, that paper's first-ever political cartoonist. By the next year, the News was running …

Aquatic Turning Performance Of Painted Turtles (Chrysemys Picta) And Functional Consequences Of A Rigid Body Design, Gabriel Rivera, Angela R.V. Rivera, Erin E. Dougherty, Richard W. Blob Jan 2006

Aquatic Turning Performance Of Painted Turtles (Chrysemys Picta) And Functional Consequences Of A Rigid Body Design, Gabriel Rivera, Angela R.V. Rivera, Erin E. Dougherty, Richard W. Blob

Publications

The ability to capture prey and avoid predation in aquatic habitats depends strongly on the ability to perform unsteady maneuvers (e.g. turns), which itself depends strongly on body flexibility. Two previous studies of turning performance in rigid-bodied taxa have found either high maneuverability or high agility, but not both. However, examinations of aquatic turning performance in rigid-bodied animals have had limited taxonomic scope and, as such, the effects of many body shapes and designs on aquatic maneuverability and agility have yet to be examined. Turtles represent the oldest extant lineage of rigid-bodied vertebrates and the only aquatic rigid-bodied tetrapods. We …

'A Sort Of Parricide': H.G. Wells And The Making Of George Orwell, Thomas Adams Coker

All Theses

George Orwell and H. G. Wells, both of whom have been dead now for nearly six decades, remain among the most popular and widely read authors in twentieth century English literature. At the same time, both men have become the foci of scholarly industries devoted to their life, thought, and work. Despite the fact that Orwell and Wells shared a number of significant literary, political, and even personal connections, relatively few Orwell or Wells scholars have bothered to examine them. As a result of this scholarly inattention, the nature and significance of Orwell's relationship with Wells have long been obscured …
