Caught On Camera: Evaluating Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa) Cavity Occurrence And Trapping Efficiency, Cindy L. Von Haugg
Caught On Camera: Evaluating Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa) Cavity Occurrence And Trapping Efficiency, Cindy L. Von Haugg
All Theses
Wood ducks (Aix sponsa) garner significant ecologic and economic importance as the second most harvested waterfowl species in two of the four migratory flyways in North America, but the accuracy of population monitoring, relative to other duck species, is stifled by the wood duck’s secretive nature and nesting habitat. As an alternate, population models would improve current assessments, but more data on the demographic vital rates of cavity-nesting wood ducks is needed. I aimed to help bridge this knowledge gap by developing a method to increase data collection efficiency, and with it, accomplish two objectives: 1) Calculate the relative abundance …
Functional Characterization Of A Lncrna Afu-254 In Stress Response And Pathogenesis Of Aspergillus Fumigatus, Ritu Devkota
Functional Characterization Of A Lncrna Afu-254 In Stress Response And Pathogenesis Of Aspergillus Fumigatus, Ritu Devkota
All Theses
Aspergillus fumigatus is a saprophytic fungus that can cause a collection of diseases termed aspergillosis; the most severe is invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Azole is a major class of antifungal drugs used to treat invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. However, in recent years, there has been an increase in fungal resistance to azole drugs, making the treatment of IPA even more challenging. It is becoming increasingly clear that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), i.e., the RNAs that do not translate into proteins, mediated regulation is vital in stress response and pathogenesis; however, the mechanisms of how lncRNA contribute to fungal stress resistance and …
Unraveling Wetland Ecology: The Effect Of Abiotic Heterogeneity And Habitat Size On Wetland Plant Diversity In The Piedmont, Gregory T. Gilmore
Unraveling Wetland Ecology: The Effect Of Abiotic Heterogeneity And Habitat Size On Wetland Plant Diversity In The Piedmont, Gregory T. Gilmore
All Theses
Ecosystems around the world are seeing an unprecedented decline in biodiversity. However, to better prevent this decline we cannot only understand the drivers of biodiversity loss, but also the factors that support diversity. Traditional ecological hypotheses such as the Habitat Heterogeneity Hypothesis (HHH) and the Theory of Island Biogeography (TIB) have provided frameworks for understanding biodiversity drivers. However, recent research suggests a more nuanced relationship between heterogeneity, habitat size, and diversity than previously thought. This study looks to bridge existing research gaps by examining the ecologically and conservational important habitat of wetlands. Specifically, the study focuses on the plant diversity …
Aboveground Biomass Estimation Of Pastures Using Field Robotics, Jasanmol Singh
Aboveground Biomass Estimation Of Pastures Using Field Robotics, Jasanmol Singh
All Theses
Pastures cover a major part of the agricultural land in the United States. These prominent land covers need finer maintenance to boost biomass production and optimize consumption. A vital factor in this process is the precise knowledge of the forage availability. This study focused on the development of sensor-based systems for estimating the aboveground biomass in pastures. The study was conducted on Alfalfa and Bermudagrass, which are the widely grown legumes and grasses in the country for grazing and hay production. This study compared the performance of five different crop height measurement systems and a vegetation coverage measurement system for …
Disease Ecology Of The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus: The Effect Of A Nemertean Egg Predator, Carcinonemertes Conanobrieni, On The Host's Reproductive Performance And Active Parental Care, Natalie C. Stephens
All Theses
Anthropogenic stressors and climate change are contributing to the rapid deterioration of marine ecosystems and the important ecological services they provide to coastal communities; concomitantly, this allows infectious agents that cause disease to proliferate in marine environments. At the forefront of marine disease ecology are the impacts of pathogens and parasites on commercially and recreationally exploited decapod crustaceans, including the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus. While there are few pathogens and parasites known to infect P. argus, emerging threats such as the nemertean micro-egg predator Carcinonemertes conanobrieni pose new, unexposed problems across its Greater Caribbean distribution. Beyond its …

Expandable Tissue-Engineered Living Surgical Pulmonary Heart Valve For Pediatric Patients, Jacob M. Lautenschlager
All Theses
Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of mortality in developed countries, with 607.74 million cases globally in 2020.1,2 Advances in medicine have changed the current demographic suffering from heart valve disease into an aging population suffering from degenerative heart valve disease, creating a growing population treated by surgical or transcatheter intervention.3-6 Current treatments of valvular heart disease are therefore directed toward valve replacements for the adult population, leaving a treatment gap for pediatric patients suffering from heart valve disease.7-10
Congenital heart defects are defined as structural abnormalities of the heart or intrathoracic great vessels and are …
Effects Of Interrupting The Scotophase Period On Bone Health And Performance Of Laying Hens, Alexis J. Clark
Effects Of Interrupting The Scotophase Period On Bone Health And Performance Of Laying Hens, Alexis J. Clark
All Theses
This thesis aimed to evaluate the effects of interrupting the daily scotophase period on bone health and production in laying hens. Modern commercial laying hens are prone to high rates of bone demineralization due to the constant mobilization of calcium to withstand daily eggshell calcification mechanisms. The industry light standard for laying hens is 16 hours of continuous light (photophase) and 8 hours of continuous darkness (scotophase) daily. During scotophase, physical activity is reduced due to instinctive perching behaviors, and thus, feeding behaviors are halted. However, physiological processes, including digestion, excretion, and reproduction, remain active during scotophase.
Most eggshell formation …

A Southern War On Predators: How Bounty Laws, Environment, European Thought, And Wolves And Other Predators Influenced Colonial South Carolina, Andrew J. Hubbard
All Theses
During the colonization of South Carolina, the natural landscape was altered significantly by European colonists. Bounty laws targeting the native predatory species were one-way humans facilitated this change. These bounty laws were created and enforced throughout much of the colonial period in South Carolina and permanently removed most of the region’s natural large predators. This thesis contends that South Carolina’s laws tell a story unique among colonial bounty laws provide a unique perspective on Euro-American attitudes toward predators, creating precedents later used in the United States’ westward expansion and war on predators. European bias and stereotypes permeate South Carolina’s culture …
Creating Cartoon Style With 3d Animation, Sean William Meade
Creating Cartoon Style With 3d Animation, Sean William Meade
All Theses
Computer-generated three-dimensional animation is often used to imitate live-action filmmaking and photorealistic objects and effects. However, it is equally possible to use three-dimensional computer-generated imagery to imitate cartoon, hand-drawn two-dimensional animation. Cartoons and hand drawn animation have their own sets of limitations which change their visual style. Animators may choose to draw scenes with elements that break continuity or are not realistic. Every choice from the color to the scene composition is different from now-conventional three-dimensional CGI. With this thesis, I investigate how to create a three-dimensional scene that closely resembles the appearance of a two-dimensional cartoon animated scene drawn …
Elucidating The Roles Of Septin Proteins In Thermotolerance And Cell Wall Integrity In Cryptococcus Neoformans, Stephani S. Martinez Barrera
Elucidating The Roles Of Septin Proteins In Thermotolerance And Cell Wall Integrity In Cryptococcus Neoformans, Stephani S. Martinez Barrera
All Dissertations
Cryptococcus neoformans is a globally distributed fungal pathogen responsible for causing cryptococcal meningitis in immunocompromised individuals. This pathogenic yeast must adapt to changes in temperature upon entering the human host. Septin proteins are conserved filament-forming GTPases that assemble as higher-order complexes at the cell cortex to support cytokinesis and morphogenesis in fungal and animal cells. In C. neoformans, four septin homologs (Cdc3, Cdc10, Cdc11, and Cdc12) assemble at the mother-bud neck, contributing to cytokinesis through poorly understood mechanisms. C. neoformans strains lacking the septins Cdc3 or Cdc12 are viable at 25°C, but fail to proliferate at 37°C, and are …
Investigating The Adaptive Potential Of Leaf Variegation In Two Dimorphic Hexastylis Species, Cierra N. Sullivan
Investigating The Adaptive Potential Of Leaf Variegation In Two Dimorphic Hexastylis Species, Cierra N. Sullivan
All Dissertations
Variegated leaves with disjointed, patterned coloration of the leaf blade are often hypothesized to have decreased photosynthetic capacity in comparison to uniformly colored leaves. Yet, many forest understory plants in tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates possess leaf variegation. Moreover, mixed findings from previous research on the physiological impacts of leaf variegation suggest variegation is adaptative under certain environmental conditions despite decreased photosynthetic tissue area. I take an eco-physiological approach to investigate agents of selection maintaining a leaf variegation polymorphism in Hexastylis, which has both quantitative and qualitative variation in variegation. First, I conduct field surveys of morph frequencies, quantitative …

Pfos Alters Metabolism In The Liver And Skeletal Muscle Of Cyp2b-Null And Humanized Cyp2b6-Transgenic Mice, Lanie Williams
All Theses
Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent environmental pollutant previously used in industrial products such as fire-fighting foams, furniture, and stain-resistant coatings. PFOS is associated with adverse health outcomes, including hepatosteatosis and diabetes. Previously, humanized CYP2B6-transgenic (hCYP2B6-Tg) mice accumulated more PFOS than Cyp2b-null mice and experienced greater mortality; however, the Cyp2b-null mice experienced greater steatosis. Cyp2b-null and hCYP2B6-Tg mice were treated with 0, 1, or 10 mg/kg/day PFOS for 21 days. To determine how PFOS affected the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) oxylipin concentrations were measured via LC-MS/MS. Additionally, gene expression changes were measured using RNA sequencing. PFOS treatment increased the …

Training Uav Teams With Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Towards Fully 3d Autonomous Wildfire Response, Bryce Hopkins
All Theses
As climate-exacerbated wildfires increasingly threaten landscapes and communities, there is an urgent and pressing need for sophisticated fire management technologies. Coordinated teams of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) present a promising solution for detection, assessment, and even incipient-stage suppression – especially when integrated into a multi-layered approach with other recent wildfire management technologies such as geostationary/polar-orbiting satellites and CCTV detection networks. However, there remains significant challenges in developing the necessary sensing, navigation, coordination, and communication subsystems that enable intelligent UAV teams. Further, federal regulations governing UAV deployment and autonomy pose constraints on real-world aerial testing, creating a disconnect between theoretical research …

The Role Of Kinases Signaling In Organogenesis, Fatemeh Nasehi
All Dissertations
Kinases are crucial regulators of organ development and differentiation. This thesis investi- gates the roles of TAK1, TGFbeta-Activate Kinase 1 (TAK1/Map3K7), and Akt3 kinases in skeletal, cardiac muscle, and cartilage. TAK1 is pivotal for the differentiation of various organ systems, including sinoatrial node and cartilage, and is responsible for phosphorylat- ing a diverse array of downstream kinases. We identified several novel proteins, including phospho-Akts, that are upregulated in response to TAK1 activation. We discovered severe Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) and cartilage defects in Akt3 mutant mice. Although this mouse mutant has been studied for over two decades, we are the first …

Pelvic Sucker Form And Function In Waterfall Climbing Gobies: Variation In Morphology And Adhesive Performance Can Inspire Biomimetic Innovation, Amanda Palecek Mcclung
Pelvic Sucker Form And Function In Waterfall Climbing Gobies: Variation In Morphology And Adhesive Performance Can Inspire Biomimetic Innovation, Amanda Palecek Mcclung
All Dissertations
Adhesive systems have evolved in many animal lineages and have appeared multiple times among the fishes. Bioadhesion in the gobies, a group found around the world, plays a role in both station-holding and even climbing. Among the Hawaiian streams, we find four species of amphidromous gobies which must face predators as juveniles and climb streams up to hundreds of feet tall to reach adult habitats. These gobies exhibit a range of climbing and adhesive abilities that result in an elevation-dependent species stratification, in which increasingly proficient climbing species are found in streams at increasingly higher elevations. This group is therefore …

The Development Of A Novel Cartilage Analog Scaffold For Chondral Regeneration, Vishal Thomas
All Dissertations
Focal Chondral Defects (FCDs) are cartilage injuries that affect about 900,000 Americans every year. Left untreated, these may lead to osteoarthritis and eventually necessitate painful knee replacements. Current treatment options are limited in terms of durability, cost, and availability of grafts. Tissue engineering, using natural scaffolds, are a highly attractive alternative promising cost efficiency, abundance, and long-term benefits. However, their low mechanical strength and dense matrices are impediments that could lead to sub-optimal repair.
In this work, a natural biomaterial, the bovine nucleus pulposus (bNP), derived from intervertebral disc tissue, was identified as a candidate scaffold for cartilage regeneration. Mechanical …
