Yeats’S White Vellum Notebook, 1930–1933, Wayne K. Chapman
Yeats’S White Vellum Notebook, 1930–1933, Wayne K. Chapman
International Yeats Studies
This essay examines the present state of affairs concerning “one of the great literary manuscripts of our time, the great vellum notebook” that Sotheby’s advertised and sold for the first time in 1985. That sale and a subsequent one in 1990 are related to the contents of the notebook as ascertained from finding aids used by the editors of the Cornell Yeats series, including Chapman, as well as from the examination of extant microfilms of the notebook, the location of the original having been lost. Particularly useful for new and on-going textual-genetic studies in Yeats collections at the National Library …
India In Yeats’S Early Imagination: Mohini Chatterjee And Kālidāsa, Ashim Dutta
India In Yeats’S Early Imagination: Mohini Chatterjee And Kālidāsa, Ashim Dutta
International Yeats Studies
W. B. Yeats’s interest in India persisted throughout his variegated life and career, starting in the late nineteenth century and lasting through the final decade of his life. This article concentrates on his early years when he first came to terms with Indian philosophy, religion, and literature via the Vedāntist-Theosophist Mohini Chatterjee and the work of the fifth-century Sanskrit playwright Kālidāsa. With a view to examining critically Yeats’s creative engagement with, and appropriation of, these disparate materials, this article closely reads a discarded 1880s poem on Chatterjee’s teaching and its later 1929 version, “Mohini Chatterjee,” as well as his early …
Yeats's Re-Enchanted Nature, Seán Hewitt
Yeats's Re-Enchanted Nature, Seán Hewitt
International Yeats Studies
W. B. Yeats identified anti-Enlightenment principles as being central to his generation’s artistic project. Characterizing the worldview he was writing against, he argued that “the mischief began at the end of the seventeenth century when man became passive before a mechanized nature” (OBMV, xxvii). By charting the processes by which he reimagined nature and the poet’s (and poem’s) position in relation to it, we can begin to understand Yeats’s developing ecological relationships as a matrix for his shifting understanding of mysticism (and vice versa). Focusing in particular on the prefatory texts to The Shadowy Waters, this article …

Evaluation Of Parameters Affecting The Performance Of Lipase Transesterification Using Cottonseed Oil, Stanley Terrell Anderson
Evaluation Of Parameters Affecting The Performance Of Lipase Transesterification Using Cottonseed Oil, Stanley Terrell Anderson
All Theses
Eversa Transform® was used with crude and glandless cottonseed oil to evaluate the key parameters in its performance. Eversa is one of the newer products produced by Novozymes A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark) and has attracted much industry use. Cottonseed oil is a fringe oil in the biodiesel production market that was not tested with Eversa Transform® to our knowledge. The goal of this research was to see which dominant parameters were the most influential on the performance of Eversa. After careful review of literature, temperature, enzyme amount and water amount were the most consistently manipulated variables to produce more optimal results. …
Eastern Spotted Skunk Occupancy And Rest Site Selection In Hardwood Forests Of The Southern Appalachians, Robin Yuet Ying Eng
Eastern Spotted Skunk Occupancy And Rest Site Selection In Hardwood Forests Of The Southern Appalachians, Robin Yuet Ying Eng
All Theses
Eastern spotted skunks are a poorly understood mesocarnivore species that suffered a dramatic range-wide decline in the mid-1900s. Little is known about their current distribution or habitat needs, and in the southern Appalachians, where the Carolinas and Georgia converge spotted skunks have never been studied. We investigated eastern spotted skunk habitat selection to develop an understanding of their habitat and conservation needs in this region. We used remote-camera surveys and occupancy modelling to evaluate factors hypothesized to influence the probability of eastern spotted skunk detection and occurrence at the landscape scale. We detected spotted skunks at 55.6% of our sites …
Hardscramble: A Case Study Of Eliciting Conservation Values Through Vernacular Conservation Methods, Taylor Andrew Parker
Hardscramble: A Case Study Of Eliciting Conservation Values Through Vernacular Conservation Methods, Taylor Andrew Parker
All Theses
Mrs. Margaret Lloyd was a philanthropist in South Carolina society who developed strong pro-environmental behaviors after a mid-life environmental epiphany. She passed away in 2014 and toward the end of her life she donated an 853-acre property - named Hardscramble - in Camden, South Carolina to Clemson University. The land and an associated endowment are valued at approximately $10 million dollars. There are stipulations that the donation be managed in accordance to her wishes, but they are vaguely identified legally as conservation values. Since her death there have been conflicting opinions among stakeholders as to her vision and values that …
Equine Assisted Programs For Military Service Members: A Program Evaluation Using Importance-Performance Analysis, Taylor Hooker
Equine Assisted Programs For Military Service Members: A Program Evaluation Using Importance-Performance Analysis, Taylor Hooker
All Theses
Developing research, anecdotal evidence and a growing focus on non-pharmacological interventions for veterans with post-traumatic stress support the use equine-therapy as a therapeutic outlet; however, programmatic factors that contribute to veteran’s desire to attend such programs are under-investigated. Furthermore, evaluative processes in equine therapy for this particular population are scare and vary greatly from program to program. The use of the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) tool when applied to social services yields direct, applicable feedback of program success and relevancy. In this study, interviews with the selected population informed the evaluation tool used to assess the importance, and subsequent performance, of …
A Meta-Analysis Of The Enantioselectvie Dechlorination Of Select Chiral Polcychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Eric Boley
A Meta-Analysis Of The Enantioselectvie Dechlorination Of Select Chiral Polcychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Eric Boley
All Theses
A meta-analysis was performed to investigate nonracemic enantiomer fraction (EF) levels of chiral polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) found in various media across the world. Nonracemic EF levels are those determined to be statistically different than 0.5. The existing body of knowledge from the literature provided the necessary data to determine via meta-analysis a true average EF for five selected congeners, 91, 95, 132, 136, and 149. A thorough literature search was conducted to find relevant articles that contained sampling data from lab and field studies for chiral PCBs. A database was constructed to organize the sampling data obtained from the literature. …
The Work Of Water In Edwidge Danticat's Environmental Imagination, Gabrielle Nugent
The Work Of Water In Edwidge Danticat's Environmental Imagination, Gabrielle Nugent
All Theses
This paper argues that focusing on seascapes in Danticat’s fiction unsettles former land-sea relations and, in turn, generates fluid conceptual alternatives to rigid colonial histories, hierarchies, and temporal scales. Investigating how the water in Danticat’s fiction upends cultural narratives of colonial progress and modernization’s processes also yields considerations of how Danticat’s novels entail a widening of the customary aperture of ecocritcism. Thinking about Danticat’s fiction environmentally raises the stakes for how we may think about the links between “the local” and contexts of planetary reach on an “ecoglobal” scale. Foregrounding these concerns when reading Danticat’s work bears directly on contemporary …
Carcinonemertes Conanobrieni - A Nemertean Parasite Infecting The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus. Species Description, Host-Use, And Effect On Host Reproductive Health, Lunden A. Simpson
All Theses
Marine ecosystems are one of the world’s most heavily used and valuable natural systems. However, over the past decades, they have seen changes in the oceans’ pH, temperature, salinity, and other abiotic factors - all of which appear to have impacted the health of these systems, and there seems to be a global trend indicating that diseases in marine environments are emerging at an increased rate. Infection by a disease can result in a variety of negative effects on the health of a host, all of which are especially relevant in instances where commercially important hosts are infected. Disease can …
Quantifying Aqueous Plutonium Using Hybrid Extractive Scintillation Resins, Amruta Balappa Pujari
Quantifying Aqueous Plutonium Using Hybrid Extractive Scintillation Resins, Amruta Balappa Pujari
All Theses
Hybrid extractive scintillating resins (HESR) were developed for uptake and detection of aqueous plutonium (Pu). These resins consist of titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is responsible for Pu uptake, embedded in the scintillating resin. The scintillating resin emits light when excited by alpha radiation from plutonium which can be detected with a photomultiplier tube (PMT). Two main approaches were used for preparing these resins; first, incorporating inorganic compounds after polymerization: post-polymerization methods (HESR-I) and second, incorporating inorganic compounds before polymerization: pre-polymerization method (HESR-II). The physical characterization of HESR was done using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray …
Rendering 3d Fractals, Zachary Shore
Rendering 3d Fractals, Zachary Shore
All Theses
This thesis presents Cackle, a GPU accelerated path tracer for rendering 3D fractals. It is comprised of a GLSL viewer for real-time visualization and a series of CUDA kernels for offline rendering. Cackle supports both point lights and environment lights for lighting. A Cook-Torrance shading model was implemented for materials. The results are demonstrated with a series of renders and a discussion on artistic scene selection and lighting.
Regeneration Of The Ventricular Endocardium Within Acellular Whole Rabbit Hearts Using A Layer-By-Layer Seeding Method, Clayton Lewis Compton
Regeneration Of The Ventricular Endocardium Within Acellular Whole Rabbit Hearts Using A Layer-By-Layer Seeding Method, Clayton Lewis Compton
All Theses
In the United States, 1 out of every 9 death certificates in 2013 referenced heart failure.1 Despite the outstanding need of treatment options for heart failure, heart transplantation remains the optimal treatment method. However, there is a severe shortage of donor hearts available for transplantation.2 Other available treatment options are not ideal because they do not fully restore function and are associated with creating other complications.3 Thus, there is a need for developing a living tissue engineered whole heart for transplantation to provide an alternative option for patients on the waitlist to receive a donor heart.
Our solution is to …
Out Of The Woods: Facilitating Stewardship Of Historic Resources In The National Forest Service, Sydney Alexis Barrett Burns
Out Of The Woods: Facilitating Stewardship Of Historic Resources In The National Forest Service, Sydney Alexis Barrett Burns
All Theses
The United States Forest Service was established as a federal agency to oversee the nation’s timber production and protect its watersheds. With the acquisition of large tracts of public land came the acquisition of historic structures located on these lands. While the US Forest Service is focused on land management, it still has a duty to protect and properly manage all of the resources under its care, historic ones included. This thesis compares the different management structures of the US Forest Service with the National Parks Service, two federal agencies who own federal lands, one of which focuses on land …
Land Use Planning, Policy, And Water Quality Nexus For Escherichia Coli Mitigation: A Case Study Of Greenville, Sc, Katherine D'Anna Bernier
Land Use Planning, Policy, And Water Quality Nexus For Escherichia Coli Mitigation: A Case Study Of Greenville, Sc, Katherine D'Anna Bernier
All Theses
Pathogenic impairments are widespread across the United States and the source of the pollutant is both complicated and often elusive. The boundary of Greenville County, South Carolina crosses four Hydrologic Unit Code 8 watershed designations, and within those, there are over one hundred approved Total Maximum Daily Loads related to fecal indicator bacteria. This region is experiencing rapid growth and development; consequently, it is critical for planners to better understand the nexus between land use choices and water quality impacts, as zoning, ordinance decisions, and comprehensive plans can affect this relationship. The goal of this research was to correlate urbanized …
From The Cradle To The Grave: How The Embryonic Environment Shapes Responses To Climate Throughout The Life Cycle, Michael A. Carlo
From The Cradle To The Grave: How The Embryonic Environment Shapes Responses To Climate Throughout The Life Cycle, Michael A. Carlo
All Theses
With rapidly warming climates, biologists are challenged to predict organismal responses to environmental variation, changes in biodiversity, and shifts in species distributions. In many cases, organismal responses differ across life stages that exhibit differences in physiological tolerances, habitat requirements, and resource allocations strategies. For instance, mobile life stages can alter behavior in response to changes in the thermal environment, whereas immobile life stages are often vulnerable to warming temperatures due to behavioral constraints and the limited microclimatic conditions experienced over small spatial extents (e.g., an embryo in an egg). Unfavorable developmental conditions can reduce growth, alter developmental rates, and increase …
