Yeats's Queer Dramaturgies: Oscar Wilde, Narcissus, And Melancholy Masculinities In Calvary, Zsuzsanna Balázs
International Yeats Studies
This article opens up Yeats’s Calvary (1920) for new contemporary queer theatrical interpretations by addressing the tension between dramaturgies of exclusion and inclusion as well as between the authority of masculinity and the transgressive counter-authority of effeminacy and melancholy masculinities. Due to Yeats’s anti-democratic and elitist remarks and his problematic responses to authoritarian political performance in Europe and Ireland, his theatre is often seen as a space which fosters exclusion, conventional notions of heroism, and sexual polarization. Even though the authoritarian and elitist aspects of Yeats’s life and work cannot be denied, his rich queer and feminist networks, and most …

Risks And Benefits Of Using A Commercially Available Ventricular Assist Device For Failing Fontan Cavopulmonary Support: A Modeling Investigation, Masoud Farahmand, Minoo N. Kavarana, Ethan Kung
Risks And Benefits Of Using A Commercially Available Ventricular Assist Device For Failing Fontan Cavopulmonary Support: A Modeling Investigation, Masoud Farahmand, Minoo N. Kavarana, Ethan Kung
Publications
Fontan patients often develop circulatory failure and are in desperate need of a therapeutic solution. A blood pump surgically placed in the cavopulmonary pathway can substitute the function of the absent sub-pulmonary ventricle by generating a mild pressure boost. However, there is currently no commercially available device designed for the cavopulmonary application; and the risks and benefits of implanting a ventricular assist device (VAD), originally designed for the left ventricular application, on the right circulation of failing Fontan patients is not yet clear. Moreover, further research is needed to compare the hemodynamics between the two clinically-considered surgical configurations for cavopulmonary …

Nature exposure in virtual reality (VR) can provide emotional well-being benefits for people who cannot access the outdoors. Little is known about how these simulated experiences compare with real outdoor experiences. We conduct an experiment with healthy undergraduate students that tests the effects of 6 min of outdoor nature exposure with 6 min of exposure to a 360-degree VR nature video, which is recorded at the outdoor nature exposure location. Skin conductivity, restorativeness, and mood before and after exposure are measured. We find that both types of nature exposure increase physiological arousal, benefit positive mood levels, and are restorative compared …

The STEM Institute was designed to introduce the Latino youth to college life and STEM based career opportunities. The program was evaluated utilizing the 4-H Common Measures Science instruments. The results indicate a positive impact on the youths’ perception of STEM as a career option. …
Effects Of A Chronic 0.1 Μm Arsenic Exposure On P19 Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation And Pluripotency, Benjamin Mcmichael
Effects Of A Chronic 0.1 Μm Arsenic Exposure On P19 Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation And Pluripotency, Benjamin Mcmichael
All Theses
Globally, at least 140 million people are exposed to levels of arsenic greater than the World Health Organization recommended standard of 10 ug/L (10 ppb) through their drinking water and food. Epidemiological studies have correlated arsenic exposure during embryonic and fetal development with reduced birth weight, as well as muscular and neurodevelopmental deficits. The goal of the current study was to determine the mechanisms by which a chronic, low-level arsenic exposure impairs cellular development and differentiation. This was achieved by exposing P19 mouse embryonic stem cells (mESC’s) to 0.1 μM arsenic (7.5 ppb), a concentration lower than the current drinking …
External Influences And Internal Construction Of Self, Serra Raven Shuford
External Influences And Internal Construction Of Self, Serra Raven Shuford
All Theses
Throughout our lives, a plethora of influences in some way or another, determine who we are by constructing our identities and the perception of who we are. Understanding this is important as we attempt to discover self, amongst our experiences. My work investigates the way that cultural, familial, environmental, social, and other external factors affect the internal construction of self. The accumulation of imposed influences leaves little room for self which calls to question, “who are we if not for our predisposed circumstances?”. Through the collective use of textures, patterns, and colors found in fabric, the sculptures in this work …
A New American Dream, Allison Rae Johnson
A New American Dream, Allison Rae Johnson
All Theses
A New American Dream traverses’ the hierarchical systems of power within the United States of America (USA). Survival and ‘success’ in the USA almost always requires assimilation into white culture, valuing patriarchy, capitalism and white supremacy (PCWS). Articulated through fine art prints, video and commercially produced postcards, my Master of Fine Arts Thesis artwork serves as multimedia instigation, compassing the viewer to reflect upon injustices of today and to reimagine a society of equality for tomorrow. Holding a queer liberatory politick with an artistic platform, my puissance lies within disrupting our ability to lucidly categorize and separate issues. The artwork …
A Multimodal Exploration Of Altered Mechanical And Histological Properties In Tendons With Degenerative Tendinopathy, Olivia Newkirk
A Multimodal Exploration Of Altered Mechanical And Histological Properties In Tendons With Degenerative Tendinopathy, Olivia Newkirk
All Theses
Tendons injuries occur in people of all ages and can range from soreness and inflammation to full rupture requiring surgical repair. Larger injuries are typically preceded by accumulated damage that can change the strength of the tendon, and the way it responds to stress. A multimodal analysis of the changing properties serves to elucidate some of the changes both histologically and chemically, and how they affect the global properties like strength. Literature cites a number of changes including increased glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content, disordered collagen fibers, increased cellularity, increased cross-sectional area, and decreased Young’s Modulus.
This paper analyzes these five altered …

All Dissertations
Multiple problems facing society in the 21st century, including climate change and global concern over pandemics, require a greater number of STEM graduates with content knowledge and critical thinking skills. This has led to additional funding and research in teaching and learning, but much of the published literature in the context of biology education has investigated the impact of specific instructional practices across a spectrum of classrooms (undergraduate and professional) or the learning strategies specifically of medical students.
As the science of learning has developed, it has become clear that the process of learning is context-dependent. Despite continued attention to …
Forest Management Influences On Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus) Habitat In The South Carolina Lowcountry And Range-Wide, James Garrett
Forest Management Influences On Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus) Habitat In The South Carolina Lowcountry And Range-Wide, James Garrett
All Theses
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have steadily declined since at least the 1960s. There are numerous factors that contribute to this decline, such as lack of prescribed fire, cleaner farming practices, change in land use, and increased urbanization. These factors have all contributed to the deterioration and fragmentation of bobwhite habitat. Despite the expansive literature at the local level on bobwhite habitat and management, much fewer studies have observed the range-wide decline and its associated factors. Adding to both local and range-wide literature on bobwhites is essential to overturn the range-wide decline.
This thesis delves into both a …
An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Moral Foundations, Communications, And Behavioral Intent Regarding Global Tiger Conservation, Louise Flynn Orr
An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Moral Foundations, Communications, And Behavioral Intent Regarding Global Tiger Conservation, Louise Flynn Orr
All Theses
Human activity has dramatically increased the rate of biodiversity loss around the world (Diaz, Fargione, Chapin, Tilman, 2006). Tigers (Panthera tigris) are one of many species that have been significantly affected by human interference via habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trade, and human-wildlife conflicts. As a result, encouraging local community support for tiger conservation and the support of decision makers (governments, NGOs) is necessary, as is building international support through fund- and awareness-raising, even though many in the developed world have no firsthand relationship with tigers and would not be directly affected by its demise. Therefore, how should conservation organizations interested …
Investigation Of A Candidate For Cosmic Ray Acceleration, Jordan Lynn Eagle
Investigation Of A Candidate For Cosmic Ray Acceleration, Jordan Lynn Eagle
All Theses
Studies of the non-thermal Galactic source population are essential to understand how and where the bulk of cosmic rays are being accelerated and to understand the mechanisms underlying very high energy (VHE, E>50 GeV) emitters [39, 51]. The plane of the Milky Way is rich with supernova remnants (SNRs) and pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) which are efficient accelerators of cosmic rays (CRs) - whose interaction with the surrounding photon fields produces energetic γ-rays and neutrinos. SNRs and PWNe are some of the most powerful objects in our Galaxy and because they emit at very high energies (VHE, E>50 …
Testing The Waters: Diversification And Selection In The Nerodia Fasciata/Clarkii Species Complex, Mark Alexander Dimeo
Testing The Waters: Diversification And Selection In The Nerodia Fasciata/Clarkii Species Complex, Mark Alexander Dimeo
All Theses
Understanding evolution is a key component in trying to decipher the processes generating global species diversity. The strength, direction, and interaction of gene flow and selection often determine diversification patterns and the process of speciation. The Nerodia fasciata/clarkii species complex, a lineage of water snakes, is thought to have high levels of both gene flow and selective pressures due to ecological constraint. Nerodia clarkii resides in salt marsh and estuarine habitats while Nerodia fasciata is typically found in fresh water. Salinity is a strong selective pressure and is thought to play a role in the diversification process. Currently, there are …
Sunshine, Katherine Elizabeth Crossan
Sunshine, Katherine Elizabeth Crossan
All Theses
Sunshine is a story about growing up. It’s a story that I feel is important to tell, because it’s a hardship that everyone can relate to. By sharing a story that other people can understand, I can create a connection between myself and my audience; or a feeling of empathy. I chose to tell this story through film, so I could share my story primarily through images, or visual narrative. Sunshine is currently in its animatic state, which is the preliminary version of the film. The animatic, or story reel, consists of the film’s storyboards put together and timed out …
The Influence Of Water Depth On The Locomotor Kinematics Of The Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus Chilensis), Amanda Marie Palecek
The Influence Of Water Depth On The Locomotor Kinematics Of The Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus Chilensis), Amanda Marie Palecek
All Theses
Vertebrates exhibit a diverse range of locomotor modes and associated morphological structures. Although many vertebrates can be classified as using distinct aquatic or terrestrial locomotor behaviors, several species use a terrestrial mode of locomotion while only partly submerged in aquatic environments, a behavior called wading. Wading can be observed in a variety of taxa including amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds. Although there are over 100 species of wading birds, quantitative measurements of avian wading kinematics have not been performed. To address the lack of comparative studies on avian wading kinematics, video footage of Phoenicopterus chilensis (Chilean flamingo) was collected and …

Assessing Risk Management Knowledge Of Florida 4-H Professionals Relating To Shooting Sports, Matt Benge, Genevieve Mendoza, Glenn Israel
Journal of Youth Development
Florida is one of 48 states that offer shooting sports as part of their 4-H program. While young people participating in 4-H shooting sports gain valuable life skills, what has remained unclear are the skills needed by county 4-H agents to manage the risks associated with offering the program. A needs assessment was conducted to identify Florida 4-H agents’ perceived level of competency in program procedural standards and program leadership accountability as it relates to managing a county 4-H shooting sports program. The results of the study demonstrated that Florida 4-H agents recognized the value of having program procedural standards …

Gallus gallus (chicken) is phenotypically diverse, with over 60 recognized breeds, among the myriad species within the Aves lineage. Domestic chickens have been under artificial selection by humans for thousands of years for agricultural purposes. The North American Araucana (NAA) breed arose as a cross between the Chilean “Collonocas” that laid blue eggs and was rumpless and the “Quetros” that had unusual tufts but with tail. NAAs were introduced from South America in the 1940s and have been kept as show birds by enthusiasts since then due to several distinctive traits: laying eggs with blue eggshells, characteristic ear-tufts, a pea …
Gluten Detection Methods And Their Critical Role In Assuring Safe Diets For Celiac Patients, Claudia E. Osorio, Jaime H. Mejias, Sachin Rustgi
Gluten Detection Methods And Their Critical Role In Assuring Safe Diets For Celiac Patients, Claudia E. Osorio, Jaime H. Mejias, Sachin Rustgi
Publications
Celiac disease, wheat sensitivity, and allergy represent three different reactions, which may occur in genetically predisposed individuals on the ingestion of wheat and derived products with various manifestations. Improvements in the disease diagnostics and understanding of disease etiology unveiled that these disorders are widespread around the globe affecting about 7% of the population. The only known treatment so far is a life-long gluten-free diet, which is almost impossible to follow because of the contamination of allegedly “gluten-free” products. Accidental contamination of inherently gluten-free products could take place at any level from field to shelf because of the ubiquity of these …
Abject Adaptations, Annamarie E. Williams
Abject Adaptations, Annamarie E. Williams
All Theses
Abject Adaptations is a body of work that contemplates harmful, external forces surrounding women’s bodies and how these bodies adapt in order to possess agency. The work examines these external forces, adaptations and agencies using a variety of conflicting visual cues that border on the grotesque, as well as the beauty and playfulness of highly rendered illustration. Processes include the application of mixed media techniques that layer watercolor, watercolor pencil, colored pencil, graphite pencil and acrylic paint. These techniques provide a colorful and playful dichotomy to the abject forms being rendered. The cartoonish way the forms are rendered make them …
Bacterial Diversity Of The Gut Of Cotinis Nitida, Roy Attila Kucuk
Bacterial Diversity Of The Gut Of Cotinis Nitida, Roy Attila Kucuk
All Theses
Adult and larval Holometabolous insects exhibit radically different gut morphologies tied to their differing natural histories. Additionally, like other animals, these organisms frequently show distinctive morphological and physiological partitioning of their digestive systems, and this reflects on resident microbial communities. A review of the literature reveals bacteria have formed various symbioses with holometabolous hosts, differing widely in the context of host-symbiont services and patterns of colonization. The significance of these organisms in shaping host evolution and vice-versa is, at present, unclear, but intriguing in the context of host phylogeny.
Using high throughput 16S amplicon sequencing, the bacterial community of the …
Microfabricated Substrate To Achieve In Vivo-Like Cardiomyocyte Morphology And Electrical Propagation In Neonatal Cell Culture, Tiffany Yu
All Theses
Because of the complexity of the in vivo environment, much physiological and pathological understanding of the human body is obtained through cell culture. To gain clinically relevant knowledge, having a cell culture model that mimics the corresponding in vivo tissue would be advantageous. For example, when studying the mechanical and electrical coupling between cardiac cells, imitating in vivo cellular morphology correlates with improved electrical coupling. This has applications within drug screening; by being able to test for cardiotoxicity with a cell culture model, this reduces the resources needed to screen pharmaceuticals for negative side effects. In conventional cardiomyocyte culture, cells …
