Politics And Professionalism: Women Historians In The 1980s, Joan W. Scott

Women's Studies Quarterly

Those of you who think keynote speakers are chosen for their knowledge, wisdom, or fame should be disabused of those beliefs, at least in my case. I was asked to give this talk because I ventured an opinion about the subject that should be addressed in this year's keynote address during a meeting of the program committee over a year ago. At that time the American Historical Association's Committee on Women Historians (CWH) was preparing its update of the 1971 Rose Report on the Status of Women in the Historical Profession and the figures gave little reason for optimism either …

The $100 Fund: To Sustain and Expand NWSA

The National Women's Studies Association, although strong "in spirit and in truth," is not immune to the reality of inflation. If NWSA is to survive, it is imperative that a large amount of cash begin to flow into the treasury immediately to cover current and ongoing operating expenses.

Motherlogues, Barbara Rubin, Doris Friedensohn Jul 1981

Motherlogues, Barbara Rubin, Doris Friedensohn

Women's Studies Quarterly

"Motherlogues," the dramatic reading that follows, is drawn from some 200 tape recorded interviews of mothers by women's studies students at Jersey City State College. In 1979, with a generous grant from The New Jersey Department of Higher Education, Office of Separately Budgeted Research, we launched a two year project entitled "Mothers and Daughters: The Changing Lives of Ethnic Women." Using students as paid researchers, we began exploring the responses of their mothers (ages 40-60) to questions about education, marriage, motherhood, homemaking and employment.

We wanted to find out how a generation of working class and lower middle class women …

Disabled Women: Sexism Without The Pedestal, Michelle Fine, Adrienne Asch Jul 1981

Disabled Women: Sexism Without The Pedestal, Michelle Fine, Adrienne Asch

Publications and Research

The position of the disabled woman in current U.S. society deserves political, theoretical and empirical attention. In this paper we have delineated the economic, social and psychological constraints which place her at a distinct disadvantage, relative to disabled men and nondisabled women. We evaluate the ways in which having a disability is viewed as an impediment to traditional or nontraditional sex role development. The construct rolelessness is introduced, defined and examined. We conclude with reconmiendations for needed research and policy.

You are cordially invited to participate in the Third Annual NWSA Convention—"Women Respond to Racism"—to be held May 31-June 4, 1981, at the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

At this Convention we will examine the conjunction of racism and sexism from an interdisciplinary, multicultural perspective as well as in the context of, for example, community organtzmg, curriculum development, the media, and public policy. The Convention schedule includes a broad selection of workshops and panel discussions on subjects as diverse as nonracist and nonsexist curricular materials, race and sex desegregation, nineteenth-century Black women activists, organizing against sterilization abuse nationally and internationally, …

Everywoman's Guide To Colleges And Universities, The Feminist Press

Women's Studies Quarterly

We are printing the official QUESTIONNAIRE of the Everywoman's Guide project in this issue of the Women's Studies Quarterly in order to make its contents accessible to a large constituency interested in healthy educational environments for women. By the time you read this page, every college and university president in the U.S. will have received a copy of the questionnaire, and will have been alerted to the fact that it is also appearing in these pages. Because of the questionnaire's complexity, we have suggested to presidents that they may want to make use of Everywoman's Guide Committees to facilitate responses. …

Readers' Speakout, Jewell Handy Gresham, Veena P. Kasbekar, Elaine Spencer, Nancy Porter

Women's Studies Quarterly

Dear Editors:

The article in the Summer 1980 Women's Studies Newsletter (vol. 8, no. 3), "Building Coalitions between Women's Studies and Black Studies: What Are the Realities?," by Ann Cathey Carver, is to my mind excellent. The understanding by this professor of the very real social realities that make for problems between Women's Studies and Black Studies—and between Black and white women—reflects a tremendous sensitivity which has obviously grown out of extended acquaintance with the Black experience. As a Black woman, concerned with both racism and sexism in the society, I think such perceptive analysis is invaluable. I hope that …

"Strong Is What We Make Each Other": Unlearning Racism Within Women's Studies, Bettina Aptheker Jan 1981

"Strong Is What We Make Each Other": Unlearning Racism Within Women's Studies, Bettina Aptheker

Women's Studies Quarterly

In the fall of 1976 I was hired by the Women's Studies Program at San Jose State University to teach one course which I had outlined and proposed to that program's curriculum committee the previous spring. The course, entitled "Afro-American Women in History," began with "the legacy of slavery" as its theme and worked its way from the colonial era to modern times. The following year I taught the class again, this time under the auspices of the Afro-American Studies department. The first time I taught the class the students were overwhelmingly white. The second time they were overwhelmingly Black. …
