Teaching The History Of Black Women: A Bibliographical Essay, Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Jul 1981

Teaching The History Of Black Women: A Bibliographical Essay, Rosalyn Terborg-Penn

Women's Studies Quarterly

The following article originally appeared in The History Teacher 13 (February 1980) and is reprinted here be permission.

During the latter part of the 1970s, students of American history have recognized that black women's unique history cannot be thoroughly analyzed within the confines of either black history or women's history. Unfortunately, a gap exists between the realization of the goal to correct the problem and the publication of secondary works on black women's history. To date, only one anthology containing original essays treats black women's experiences from an historical perspective: Sharon Harley and Rosalyn Terborg-Penn (eds.), The AfroAmerican Woman: Struggles …

Can Consciousness Be Lowered?, Judith Stitzel Jul 1981

Can Consciousness Be Lowered?, Judith Stitzel

Women's Studies Quarterly

You've been working as part of the women's movement since 1968. It's changed your life and the lives of the people you have touched. The job you have probably didn't have a name ten years ago. You're a women's studies coordinator, a rape and domestic violence counselor, an affirmative action officer. You are more involved in women's issues than ever before. You wake up planning strategies and go to sleep drafting rationales. You subscribe to more journals—in spite of inflation—not only to support them, but to buoy yourself up. But something is wrong. There is a new sound in the …

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Women's Studies At The Pre-College Level In Ontario, Canada, Anne Chapman Jul 1981

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Women's Studies At The Pre-College Level In Ontario, Canada, Anne Chapman

Women's Studies Quarterly

Women's studies at the college level has taken root, flourished and spread in Canada as in the United States. But information about women's studies at the crucial pre-college level seems to be altogether lacking. The following report, based both on reading and interviews, surveys efforts in Ontario, Canada, to counter the male-biased curriculum, including the establishment of courses in women's studies. Although far from exhaustive, the survey may encourage others to amplify, supplement, correct and update it as well as to extend it to other parts of the world.

The extension of women's studies to the pre-college level has had …

International News: First National Conference On Women's Studies In India, Florence Howe

Women's Studies Quarterly

Nearly 350 delegates from all parts of India—from Gauhati to Gujarat, from Kashmir to Kerala—attended the five-day National Conference on Women's Studies, held at the S.N.D.T. Women's University in Bombay, April 20-24, 1981. Teachers, researchers, students, voluntary workers, and government personnel were among the participants-including 25 men. In addition, delegates from such neighboring countries as Nepal, Srilanka, and Bangladesh attended, as well as representatives of Unesco, UNICEF, the Ford Foundation, and such Indian organizations as the Indian Council on Social Science Research (ICSSR).

More than one hundred papers were presented; and, through a number of working groups, the conference sought …

Disabled Women: Sexism Without The Pedestal, Michelle Fine, Adrienne Asch Jul 1981

Disabled Women: Sexism Without The Pedestal, Michelle Fine, Adrienne Asch

Publications and Research

The position of the disabled woman in current U.S. society deserves political, theoretical and empirical attention. In this paper we have delineated the economic, social and psychological constraints which place her at a distinct disadvantage, relative to disabled men and nondisabled women. We evaluate the ways in which having a disability is viewed as an impediment to traditional or nontraditional sex role development. The construct rolelessness is introduced, defined and examined. We conclude with reconmiendations for needed research and policy.

Women's Studies International At Copenhagen: From Idea To Network, Florence Howe

Women's Studies Quarterly

Almost a year before the United Nations' Mid-Decade Conference on Women was held in Copenhagen during the summer of 1980, Mariam Chamberlain of The Ford Foundation, Amy Swerdlow, Myra Dinnerstein, and I began informal discussions about holding meetings of women's studies practitioners there . When we learned that an NGO (NonGovernmental Organizations) Forum would be organized, I wrote to sixty women's studies practitioners outside the United States, informing them of the badly-publicized NGO Forum itself, and inviting them to contribute to the planning of women's studies seminars. Eventually, The Feminist Press, the U.S. National Women's Studies Association, the Simone de …

Teaching The Feminist Minority, Barbara Hillyer Davis Jan 1981

Teaching The Feminist Minority, Barbara Hillyer Davis

Women's Studies Quarterly

In women's studies conferences during the past few years, I have heard many descriptions of pedagogical approaches to specific student groups—working women, displaced homemakers, business majors, and so on. I admire and learn from these presentations and at the same time I am uneasy. For some reason my classes are never like those described. The longer I teach them, the less homogeneous they seem. I am working out my role as a women's studies teacher in a university in which—as in most others, I suspect—no class consists of just working-class women, just reentry women, just Native American women. It is …

NWSA's New Coordinator

The Search Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Gore as National Coordinator. A founding member of the Association, Susan Gore coordinated the Founding Conference of the South Central Women's Studies Association in 1978 and served on the Coordinating Council in 1979-1980. "Previously my most visible contribution to this organization has been handling the Annual Convention T-shirts," she said. "I hope to be able to do much more in the role of Coordinator."

A self-described "persistent optimist," Gore took her place in the National Office on September I, having spent the past year teaching for …

Teaching Black Women's Heritage, Betsy Brinson Oct 1980

Teaching Black Women's Heritage, Betsy Brinson

Women's Studies Quarterly

In Fall 1979, I began teaching a course on Black Women in American History at the Open High School in Richmond, Virginia. The course was designed primarily as independent study with a weekly seminar discussion, and the students received three hours' social study credit. Because of my inexperience with teaching the subject matter, I limited the class to six students and was delighted to have all young Black women choose the course.

Our basic texts were Gerda Lerner's Black Women in White America and "Generations," an issue of Southern Exposure Magazine devoted to Southern women. We also used a wide …

The Academic Job Crisis: Some Possible Responses, Emily Abel

Women's Studies Quarterly

The following article is a revised version of a paper originally presented at the Second National Women's Studies Association Convention in Bloomington, Indiana, and at a meeting of the Pacific Southwest Women's Studies Association. The Pacific Southwest region introduced a resolution at the 1980 Delegate Assembly calling for NWSA endorsement of policies beneficial to part-time faculty (see Women's Studies Newsletter VIII:3 [Summer 1980], p. 23); the resolution was passed.

I wish to suggest a perspective from which the National Women's Studies Association can discuss the current retrenchment in higher education and the job crisis in particular. Above all, it is …

To the Editor:

After nearly five years of litigation, the class action suit charging the State University of New York at Stony Brook with sex discrimination (Coser vs. Moore) is about to go to trial. The suit, scheduled for the Winter 1980 calendar of the First Eastern District Federal Court, includes twenty-eight academic and professional women who are name plaintiffs, among them several members of the nursing faculty at the Health Science Center. The University is charged with discrimination against women in hiring, promotion, tenure award, and salaries. In addition, the suit includes cases of women professionals who were given …

Women's Studies: The Case For A Departmental Model, Madeleine J. Goodman Oct 1980

Women's Studies: The Case For A Departmental Model, Madeleine J. Goodman

Women's Studies Quarterly

The underlying premise on which we in women's studies have campaigned, and campaigned successfully, for the augmentation of academic curricula by a new and multifaceted field of studies during a period of relative austerity and even retrenchment in the academic world is the recognition of the serious effects of long-term neglect of such studies by the established disciplines. History, we say, and have demonstrated, has not been the history of women. Literature studies have not heard the voices of women, and studies of art have not seen through the eyes of women. The prevailing models of human evolution have been …
